Pressure Mounts on Akpabio to Suspend Ali Ndume for Criticizing Tinubu’s Govt
Abuja, Nigeria — Senate Chief Whip Ali Ndume’s recent outspoken criticism of the Tinubu-led administration has reportedly stirred discontent among influential circles within the Presidency. According to sources familiar with the matter speaking to Nigerian Tribune, steps are being taken to sanction Ndume for his remarks.
Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, voiced concerns last week about President Tinubu being allegedly “caged” by a cabal within the Presidential Villa, restricting direct access from ministers and key figures. He also highlighted perceived disconnect between the administration and the economic realities faced by Nigerians due to current policies.
In response, a coordinated effort involving the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Senate President Godswill Akpabio is allegedly underway to reprimand Ndume. Their objective is to address what they see as statements damaging to the President’s image and detrimental to party interests.
The APC National Working Committee recently condemned Ndume’s allegations, labeling them as baseless and accusing him of seeking attention. The party’s stance reflects efforts to quell internal dissent and maintain unity within its ranks.
Sources indicate that pressure is mounting on Akpabio to reshuffle Senate committees, potentially removing Ndume from his influential positions, including his role as deputy chairman of the Committee on Appropriation and possibly his position as Senate Chief Whip. However, Akpabio faces a dilemma as Ali Ndume played a pivotal role in his ascent to Senate President as Director General of the Stability Group.
The situation has sparked concerns among senators, particularly from the Northern Caucus, about perceived marginalization within party dynamics influenced by the Tinubu presidency. South-West lawmakers, often associated with Tinubu’s interests, have reportedly been enlisted to support actions against Ndume, reflecting broader political maneuvers within the National Assembly.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on Akpabio’s next steps and the potential ramifications for internal party dynamics and legislative operations in Nigeria.
