The goal of IPOB, a nationalist separatist group in Nigeria led by British Nigerian citizen Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is the restoration of the Republic of Biafra.

Nnamdi Kanu incorporated IPOB as a corporation in the UK when he started the organisation in 2014.

IPOB quickly gained support, especially from Igbo speakers around the world, and as time passed, more people began to support the movement and agitation for Biafra’s independence from Nigeria.

According to a lot of people, Biafra’s secession would also give voice to the Oodua Republic’s call for independence.

However, when many of Nnamdi Kanu’s supporters were implicated in and accused of plotting terrorist attacks, particularly in the South-East, things started to change.

Many people in the area died as a result, and on September 20, 2017, the government led by President Muhammadu Buhari officially designated the group as a terrorist organisation, leading to the arrest of several group members across the nation.

IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu is currently on trial in Nigeria and has been charged with treason.

The Kanu trial has, however, drawn attention to Simon Ekpa, who is thought to be Kanu’s adherent.

Recent deadly attacks in the southeast were carried out by gunmen allegedly connected to IPOB in response to a contentious sit-at-home order issued by controversial Finnish lawyer Simon Ekpa.

A document seen by newsmen suggests that the UK government has now revoked IPOB’s registration in the nation, according to a recent development.

Others are responding to the news that has caused considerable internet jubilation by saying that the move is a step in the right direction for IPOB.

The claim is that IPOB is no longer a personal or private company and is now a recognised, legal, freedom-fighting group in the UK.

As a result of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention and alleged extraordinary rendition from Kenya, there has reportedly been recent internal strife within IPOB.

There were also hints that a faction within the organisation had been formed as a result of dishonest players joining the conflict.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Nnamdi Kanu’s lead lawyer and the head of IPOB, recently reportedly filed a lawsuit against Simon Ekpa over the declaration of a sit-at-home order in the Southeast of Nigeria.

Mr. Ejiofor made this known on Tuesday in a Facebook post where he described his course of action.

Mr. Ekpa, the leader of a pro-Biafra group, Autopilot IPOB, a faction of the IPOB, has issued sit-at-home orders ever since Mr. Kanu was “intercepted” in Kenya in June of last year by Nigerian security officials and transported back to Abuja.

On December 7, Mr. Ekpa also announced a five-day sit-at-home period that would take place in the southeast of Nigeria from December 9 to December 14.

December 13th, Tuesday, was skipped

The order to stay at home, according to Mr. Ekpa, was in response to “proactive steps” made by unnamed Biafra agitators to address the region’s worsening instability, which, in his opinion, was caused by the Nigerian government. He announced it on Twitter using his verified account.

The locals were warned by him to stay inside for the entire five days or face the consequences for disobeying the order.

Igbo leaders criticised the declaration and urged the populace to disregard it.

Some residents have been attacked by gunmen carrying out the five-day stay-at-home order because they left their homes during that time.

For instance, on Friday, gunmen attacked Imo villages and killed a policeman in addition to Prince Iheme, the elder brother of Nollywood star Osita Iheme.

On Saturday in Enugu State, some thugs carried out a string of attacks that resulted in the deaths of two people in a local market and the burning of a police vehicle.

Since then, numerous people have demanded that the Finnish government detain Ekpa.
