…My enemies defeated, now sleep with eyes open

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has proclaimed the defeat of his political adversaries, asserting that those who previously attempted to distract him from his duties are now forced to “sleep with both eyes open.”

He made these remarks while hosting the national and state leadership of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday, May 16.

Expressing gratitude for the IYC’s support, Governor Fubara urged the Ijaw Nation to join in celebrating Isaac Adaka Boro Day and the “ongoing liberation” being experienced in Rivers State. He highlighted Boro’s legacy of advocating for equity, justice, and fair play, emphasizing that Boro’s efforts towards the liberation of the Ijaw people remain honored.

“Because he [Boro] stood for that unique thing, even after his death, we still celebrate him because he was a liberator,” Fubara said. “Every Rivers man, it doesn’t matter whether you are Ijaw or upland, the most important thing is that every genuine Rivers man must be a liberator.”

Governor Fubara reiterated the shared goal of liberation among the people of Rivers State and expressed his delight at the IYC’s visit. “I’m happy that you have come here today. I have also received you because we have one common purpose: to liberate our dear State. We are not going back on that.”

The governor’s remarks come amid ongoing political tensions with his predecessor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over alleged resource and power control issues. This rift has led to several confrontations between their respective supporters.

Addressing the delegation, Fubara acknowledged that the recent political turmoil aimed to derail the celebration of his first year in office. However, he assured that such attempts had been thwarted. “I am happy that you’ve told me this morning that when I call on you, you will respond. But there is nothing to call on you for. Because we have already defeated them,” he stated.

“By the special grace of God, what they thought that they would have done to us while we were celebrating our one year in office, they are the ones sleeping with their two eyes open. It shows that we have the Ijaw blood. And what is that blood: it is the blood of action; less talk, more action.”

Governor Fubara’s declaration underscores his administration’s commitment to advancing the state despite political challenges, aligning with the enduring legacy of Isaac Adaka Boro.
