His comments come as Israeli troops prepared for a possible ground invasion of the territory in response to the recent brutal rampage by Hamas across southern Israel, resulting in numerous casualties and the taking of hostages.

President Biden expressed his confidence that Israeli forces would take measures to minimize civilian casualties and prevent a dire humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. He stressed the need to go after Hamas and “take out the extremists,” describing it as a necessary requirement.

When asked if Hamas should be entirely eliminated, President Biden replied, “Yes, I do.” However, he cautioned against Israeli occupation of Gaza, stating, “I think it’d be a big mistake.

President Biden acknowledged that not all Palestinian people are represented by Hamas and that Israel’s occupation of Gaza would be ill-advised. He mentioned the historical context, noting that Israel took control of the Gaza Strip during the 1967 Six Day War but later unilaterally left in 2005, enabling the Palestinian Authority to govern the territory.

In response to rocket fire, Israel imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip in 2006, further complicating the situation in the area. President Biden’s stance reflects the delicate balance between addressing security concerns and ensuring the well-being of the civilian population in the region
