Deji of Akure Begins 7-Day Silence, Bans Drumming, Closes Palace Road, Details Emerge

The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, commenced a seven-day period of silence on September 24, as part of his annual leave, in line with the traditions of Akure Kingdom.

The palace has issued a ban on drumming and other forms of musical expression throughout this observance, which will continue until September 30.

Chief Press Secretary Michael Adeyeye released a statement on the Deji’s behalf, explaining that the monarch is using this time to pray for the peace, prosperity, and progress of Akure Kingdom, Ondo State, and Nigeria as a whole.

During this period, residents are strictly prohibited from engaging in any drumming activities, and the road leading to the Deji’s Palace will be closed to traffic. The statement urged road users to utilize alternate routes and comply with these temporary restrictions.

In adherence to local customs, a section of the Oja Oba market will also be closed as part of the Ulefunta festival traditions. The palace has called on the community to participate in prayers for the wellbeing of the land and to respect the Deji’s period of reflection.

“As they go about their lawful duties, we encourage all to pray for the good of the land,” the palace statement concluded.

This annual observance underscores the importance of tradition and the collective spirit of prayer and unity within Akure during the Deji’s silence.
