In a significant development, the crescent moon, symbolizing the commencement of the Holy month of Ramadan, has been sighted in Saudi Arabia.

The moon’s sighting on Sunday evening marks the conclusion of the month of Sha’ban, with the Holy Month officially beginning on Monday, March 11.

Ramadan, following the lunar Islamic calendar with months spanning 29 or 30 days, is determined by the crescent moon’s sighting. Saudi Arabian authorities had urged Muslims to observe the crescent for the commencement of Ramadan, and the Supreme Court had called on witnesses to report their observations to the nearest court.

Australia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Brunei have announced March 12 as the start of Ramadan. However, Oman has declared March 12, Tuesday, as the beginning of Ramadan due to the absence of the crescent moon sighting on Sunday evening.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. This ninth month of the Islamic calendar spans four weeks and two days, during which Muslims worldwide fast from dawn to sunset, engage in prayers for peace and guidance, contribute to the community through charity or zakaat, and participate in humanitarian activities such as providing for the underprivileged.
