Former CAN President, Sunday Mbang Dies

 

Sunday Mbang, a former president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has passed away.

 

Mbang, a former prelate of the Methodist church, passed away at the age of 86. The religious leader passed away on May 16.

The deceased was the world Methodist council’s first black president.

 

On Wednesday, May 17th, the church’s secretary, Babatunde Taiwo, informed the church’s leadership of his passing in a letter.

 

Former CAN President, Sunday Mbang Dies

 

The church referred to the former CAN president as “a man who exemplified the pioneering and path-finding spirit of Nigerian Methodism”

 

“His beloved Church, Methodist Church, to which he provided spiritual, intellectual, and servant leadership for more than two decades, and the entire Body of Christ in Nigeria and the diasporas will surely and deeply miss him,” the church said in a statement.

According to the church, the deceased cleric was born on August 26, 1936 in Idua Eket, Eket LGA, Akwa Ibom.

 

He attended the Effoi group school, the University of Ibadan, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and Harvard University before becoming a minister in 1961, following theological education and training in Nigeria and abroad.
