A Federal High Court in Kano has nullified all actions taken by the Kano State Government to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law.

This legal battle began after the Kano Assembly repealed the law, leading to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf implementing it by dethroning Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano. Governor Yusuf also reversed the creation of four emirates – Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya – dismissing the Emirs appointed by his predecessor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

The repealed law was also used to reinstate the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was dethroned by Ganduje in 2020, as the 16th Emir of Kano.

Aminu Babba Danagundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba and a kingmaker in the former Kano emirate, contested the validity of the law. Represented by his counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), Danagundi sought a declaration from the court to nullify the law. On Thursday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman ruled in his favor, setting aside the Kano government’s actions and ordering all parties to maintain the status quo.

Justice Liman noted that the defendants were aware of an interim order granted by the court but chose to ignore it, proceeding with the implementation of the law regardless. He emphasized his willingness to use coercive powers to ensure compliance with his order.

The case has now been transferred to Justice Simon Amobeda for continuation due to Justice Liman’s elevation to the Court of Appeal.
