According to the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, the foreign exchange market’s inherent distortions will persist in 2022.

This is according to the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise [CPPE] 2022’s Economic Review for 2021 and Agenda for 2022 report, which was signed by the center’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muda Yusuf.

According to the report, the forex challenge faced by investors in the previous year was multifaceted.

What the report has to say

According to the report, in 2021, the foreign exchange challenge will be a major concern for investors. The dimensions of this conundrum are as follows:

i. The sharp depreciation in the value of the currency over the last year.

Ad ii. The foreign exchange market’s liquidity crisis, which manifests itself in a severe foreign exchange shortage in the official window.

iii. Exchange rate volatility, which creates significant uncertainty and unpredictability for investors.

“Monetary and foreign exchange policy rigidities may also pose a risk to the growth outlook,” according to the report, “because there are no signs of any significant shift in monetary and foreign exchange policy stance in the near term.”

“As a result, the foreign exchange market’s inherent distortions will persist in 2022.” The high Cash Reserve Requirement [CRRconstraining ]’s effect on financial intermediation would continue in 2022, dampening the growth outlook.”

According to the report, investors will have to deal with the international trade barriers that will be present in 2021. “These are issues with the Lagos ports, including traffic congestion, port congestion, bureaucratic documentation processes, extortion, and prohibitive charges by terminal operators and shipping companies, all of which are unlikely to be resolved by 2022.” In 2022, investors will have to deal with these constraints,” it said.
