He served as the Talawa Theatre Company’s writer-in-residence from 1994 to 1995, the Royal National Theatre Studio’s resident dramatist in 1996, and the Judith E. Wilson Fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, in 2000–2001. In addition, he served as the Bush Theatre’s Royal Literary Fund Resident Playwright from 2002 to 2003.

Half of a Yellow Sun, which was screened in the Special Presentation category at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and received a “rapturous reception,” marked his directorial debut.

The third season of the well-known MTV drama series Shuga was also directed by him.

He directed the first Netflix original series from Nigeria, Blood Sisters, in 2022. He was the series’ director for the two episodes Run Sisters Run and It’s a Bloody Affair.

He was named the director of the upcoming Netflix and Ebonylife TV co-production Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman, which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 and is a screen adaptation of Wole Soyinka’s stage play Death and the King’s Horseman.

Before winning the 1990 British Council Lagos Award for a collection of poems, he won the 1989 International Student Playscript Competition with an unpublished play titled Rain.

At the age of 22, and armed with the draughts of two novels, he relocated to London.

His books were released, and the Royal Court Theatre awarded him a commission.

Cause of death

At the time this report was published, his cause of death was unknown. His daughter Temi Bandele posted a statement on Facebook late Monday night announcing his passing.

“As Biyi’s Daughter, I am heartbroken to share the sudden and unexpected death of my father Biyi Bandele on Sunday, August 7, in Lagos,” the statement read.

“Biyi was an incredibly gifted writer and filmmaker in addition to being a devoted friend and adored father.

He was a storyteller at heart, with an unwavering viewpoint, distinctive voice, and wisdom that boldly spoke through all of his art, in poetry, books, plays, and films.

He shared tales that had a significant influence and inspired people all over the world. Through his work, he will leave a lasting legacy.

“He was taken from us much too soon. He had already said a lot in a beautiful way and still had a lot to say.

As we mourn his loss, we ask that everyone respect the privacy of his family and friends.
