Lagos Court Adjourns Ruling on Contested Land Dispute
The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has adjourned its ruling on a long-running land dispute between two families in the Lekki area, pushing the decision to November 15 after hearing final submissions from both parties.
Justice Adebayo Ogunleye adjourned the case after counsel for the plaintiffs and defendants presented their closing arguments. The plaintiffs, represented by the Falana family, argue that the land in question was unlawfully acquired by the defendants in 2018. The defendants, the Okafor family, insist that the property was legally purchased and that the plaintiffs have no legitimate claim.
The dispute dates back to 2018 when the property was reportedly sold by a relative of the Falana family without the consent of other family members. The sale was registered at the Lagos State Land Registry, but the plaintiffs claim that the registration was obtained through misrepresentation. The defendants deny this allegation.
Three key issues remain unresolved in the Land Dispute
Three issues remain central to the case. The first is whether the original seller had the legal authority to dispose of the property. The second is whether the buyers conducted proper due diligence before the purchase. The third is whether the Land Registry properly verified the documents submitted at the time of the sale.
During the hearing, the plaintiffs’ counsel argued that the sale was void because the seller was not the sole owner. However, the defendants’ counsel argued that the plaintiffs had waited too long to challenge the transaction. The judge noted that the delay could affect the outcome.
Legal analysts say the case could have wider implications for land transactions in Lagos. However, the outcome will depend on the documentary evidence presented. Meanwhile, both families have been urged to pursue an amicable settlement.
