1. Nigeria wins $3.38bn ICC fight over Mambilla power project as tribunal rejects Sunrise claims.
An International Chamber of Commerce tribunal in Paris issued an award on September 17 in Nigeria’s favour, dismissing Sunrise Power and Transmission Company’s claims over the stalled Mambilla hydroelectric project in Taraba State. The company had sought $680m as a settlement sum and interest, tied to a separate arbitration in which it claimed more than $2.7bn. The tribunal also threw out its demand for a $400m payment and ordered Sunrise and its promoter, Leno Adesanya, to reimburse Nigeria 75 per cent of the $11.82m the country spent defending the case, plus interest.
2. FG suspends Niger NSCDC commandant, orders probe as 37 suspected illegal miners die in custody
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the immediate suspension of Niger State NSCDC Commandant Suberu Aniviye after the deaths in Minna. The suspects were arrested during enforcement operations on September 15 and 16, and their bodies were found in the early hours of September 17. Niger State Governor Umaru Bago put the toll at 37; the Associated Press reported at least 33, while the NSCDC has not given a figure and says the cause is subject to medical and laboratory confirmation.
3. Survivors allege suffocation as NSCDC panel begins probe into Minna custody deaths
A survivor receiving treatment at a Minna hospital said about 65 detainees were crammed into a poorly ventilated cell where they struggled for air, an account that has not been independently verified. NSCDC Commandant-General Ahmed Abubakar Audi constituted a panel led by the Deputy Commandant-General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation to examine the condition of the suspects at arrest, the length of detention, detention conditions and the medical attention provided.
