The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, with immediate effect due to alleged gross indiscipline, insubordination, and anti-party activities.

The expulsion was communicated in a letter from the Ideato LGA chapter of the party, dated December 5, 2024, and signed by LGA Chairman Hon. ThankGod Okeke and Secretary Onyebuchi Umeh, addressed to the State Chairman.

This action followed a report from the party’s disciplinary committee, dated November 27, 2024, which investigated misconduct charges against Ugochinyere in accordance with Section 57 (1-4) of the PDP Constitution 2017 as amended.

Ugochinyere had been suspended at his Umuopia/Umukegwu ward on October 14, 2024, after failing to respond to an invitation to appear before the ward Executive Committee on October 5, 2024, to address allegations of disciplinary offences. He also ignored reminders and further invitations sent on October 7, 2024.

The letter stated: “Upon receipt of the report, the LGA Executive Committee of Ideato North met on December 5, 2024, and unanimously adopted the report of the disciplinary committee.

In light of this, Hon. Imo Ugochinyere Ikeagwonu is hereby expelled from the party (PDP) with immediate effect and ceases to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Umuopia/Umukegwu ward of Ideato North LGA.”

He was also accused of unauthorized publicity of internal disputes, forming parallel executive bodies at the ward, LGA, and national levels, and making derogatory and provocative public statements against the party and its national leaders, actions that brought the party into public disrepute.

IGP Files 13 New Charges Against Dele Farotimi (Download Here)

The police have filed 13 new counts of criminal defamation against activist Dele Farotimi, accusing him of holding a press conference online where he detailed a plot to arrest him. The charges were filed on Friday, according to documents seen by Peoples Gazette.

The police stated that the December 2, 2024, press briefing on YouTube was an attempt to bully and defame Afe Babalola, a senior lawyer who had Farotimi arrested on Tuesday and remanded in prison following an initial arraignment on Wednesday.

These new charges represent the latest escalation in a case that has caused division within legal circles nationwide. It appears that Babalola is unwilling to back down, despite concerns that his actions could damage his legacy and are seen as an attack on free speech.

During the press conference, Farotimi detailed how Babalola was targeting him over his book, released in July 2024, which alleges that Babalola engaged in judicial corruption over several decades. Babalola has denied all allegations of bribing judges and corruption.

Babalola’s decision to involve the police, who are often seen as being used by the powerful against ordinary citizens, has drawn significant criticism. Many Nigerians view the 95-year-old’s actions as oppressive and have increased pressure both domestically and internationally for him to cease his pursuit of Farotimi.

Farotimi was arrested in Lagos on Tuesday and transported to Ekiti. The police initially charged him with 16 counts of criminal defamation on Wednesday, with a bail hearing scheduled for December 6.

On Friday, Peoples Gazette received court documents indicating 13 new charges against Farotimi, accusing him of disparaging Babalola during a podcast appearance with journalist Seun Okinbaloye and on his own YouTube channel.

The criminal complaint, marked FHC/AD/CR/104/2024, was addressed to Farotimi, but it was unclear whether he had been served as of Friday afternoon.

Gunmen Attack Anambra Police Checkpoint: Two Officers Shot, Vehicles Razed

Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint at Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident was confirmed by Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, in a statement on Friday.

Superintendent of Police Ikenga stated that two security operatives sustained gunshot injuries during a gun duel and are currently receiving medical treatment. The victims were identified as a police officer and a member of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG).

“During the gun duel, one police officer and one AVG operative sustained gunshot injuries and are currently responding to treatment in a hospital,” he said. “Unfortunately, two operational vehicles belonging to the AVG were caught in the fire and completely razed.”

The statement mentioned that the gunmen were intercepted on Thursday on the Umuchu-Amesi-Uga Road. Recovered from them was a branded blue Hilux vehicle, suspected to have been snatched from an unsuspecting member of the public. During a search of the vehicle, coolers for food preservation were found.

The gunmen were trailed after police operatives resisted the attack at the checkpoint. Ikenga added that joint operations are ongoing in the area, and further developments will be communicated.

Anambra is among the South-Eastern states witnessing a series of attacks by gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). Other affected states include Abia, Imo, Enugu, and Ebonyi.

Despite the presence of security operatives, these gunmen have continued to launch attacks and enforce sit-at-home orders on Mondays, causing significant economic losses in the region. It remains unclear if the latest attack in Anambra was carried out by IPOB/ESN.

PDP Declares Ibori’s Daughter’s Seat Vacant Following Defection to APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has requested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) begin the process for a new election to fill the Ethiope East/Ethiope West Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

This request comes after Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the party declared that Hon. Ibori-Suenu’s defection automatically vacates her seat under Section 68 (1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

    The provision states:

“A member of the Senate or House of Representatives shall vacate his seat … if, being a person whose election to the House was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of the period for which that House was elected.”

The PDP argued that Hon. Ibori-Suenu’s defection results in the loss of her seat, rights, privileges, and recognition as a member of the House of Representatives, based on Supreme Court interpretations of the Constitution.

The party urged Hon. Ibori-Suenu to stop presenting herself as a representative to avoid “impersonation with likely criminal consequences.”

It also called on the Sergeant-at-Arms of the National Assembly to enforce her removal.

Additionally, the PDP stated that it has formally communicated to INEC to conduct a by-election within the constitutionally stipulated timeframe to fill the now-vacant seat in Delta State.

The PDP directed its National Legal Adviser to initiate legal proceedings to protect the votes and mandate of the Ethiope East/Ethiope West constituents, which were originally granted to the PDP.

“The votes and mandate of the people of Ethiope East/Ethiope West cannot be appropriated by any person or political party under any guise,” the party asserted.

Nineteen officers of the Nigeria Police Force have been dismissed for gross professional misconduct, according to the Police Service Commission (PSC).

On Friday, December 6, 2024, the commission stated that the dismissed officers violated the rules and regulations of the establishment.

At a plenary session, the PSC chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, also demoted 19 other officers found guilty of various offences.

In a statement by PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, the dismissed officers include 10 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs), six Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), two Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs), and one Superintendent of Police (SP).

Ani said the dismissal followed the recommendations of PSC commissioners after investigations into various petitions against the officers.

Two Assistant Inspector Generals of Police were also reprimanded for failing to carry out lawful instructions, and another senior officer received a warning letter for negligence of duty.

The PSC also demoted one Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), one Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), two Superintendents of Police (SPs), two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), and 13 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs).

Ani stated, “The commission also considered 23 appeals and petitions and nine legal matters/court judgments.”

PSC Chairman Argungu said the commission will expedite police disciplinary matters to allow officers who are not found wanting to continue their career progression, while those found guilty serve their punishments.

He warned that the PSC would not hesitate to punish officers involved in civil matters such as land disputes, marital issues, and rent-related disputes.

“DIG Argungu said the courts should be allowed to perform their duties, while the police should focus more on criminal matters and threats to life,” Ani added.

The leadership of the union expressed the appreciation of all teachers in Oyo State to Governor ‘Seyi Makinde for the appointment of 14,500 qualified teachers within one and a half years of his second term, and 5,000 teachers in his first term, into the teaching service of Oyo State through the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM).

Falana Queries Mele Kyari on Why Port Harcourt Refinery is Only Blending 60,000 Barrels, Alleged Diversion of $2.9 Billion Earmarked for Repair

Falana Queries NNPCL Managing Director, Mele Kyari, on Port-Harcourt Refinery and Alleged Diversion of $2.9 Billion Earmarked for Repairs.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has challenged the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, to explain to Nigerians how $2.9 billion meant for the smooth takeoff of the country’s three refineries was spent.

Falana also questioned why the Port-Harcourt refinery is only blending 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, while the 150,000 bpd capacity is abandoned, as well as the Warri and Kaduna refineries.

The fiery human rights lawyer spoke on Wednesday in Lagos State at the commissioning of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) Tower.

President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the newly constructed seven-storey NUPENG building situated at Jibowu Street, Lagos, which stands as the tallest labour union office building in Nigeria, with multiple power sources – the national grid, generating plant, and solar panel.

Apart from Falana, the event attracted other dignitaries and key players in the oil and gas industry, and labour, including Joe Ajaero, president of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Festus Osifo, president of Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Williams Akporeha, NUPENG president.

“I challenge NUPENG and PENGASSAN to tell Nigerians the actual state of the refineries. Only 60,000 barrels per day are being blended while NNPCL is silent on the remaining 150,000 bpd as well as on the Warri and Kaduna refineries,” Falana said in his remarks.

“NNPCL has not explained to Nigerians why the $2.9 billion earmarked for the refineries has been diverted,” Falana added.

In his reply at the occasion, the NNPCL MD, who has come under scrutiny over the abysmal state of the refineries, “assured” Falana and others that the Port-Harcourt refinery was functioning.

It was reported that the Port-Harcourt refinery shut down operation “at the moment” with only its non-petroleum unit running, which is the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU).

The CDU produces naphtha, kerosene, and diesel but cannot produce the component needed for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol, top sources at the refinery disclosed.

Reports have been monitoring developments at the refinery since the NNPCL initially claimed the refinery was up and trucking out PMS to the Nigerian public.

Reports indicated that only the old section of the Port-Harcourt refinery was working and it was blending “Crack C5 with the Naphtha” and trucking it out as Premium Motor Spirit, which some staff warned would have an “effect” on vehicles.

Top sources clarified that the NNPCL came up with the idea of blending Crack C5 with the Naphtha from the primary units because the secondary units are not ready yet.

The sources said that though blending is a standard practice and that PMS is a blend of products, “the blended products are reformate. Gasoline is produced from the secondary units of the process plant. These secondary units are yet to be commissioned.”

Giving an update on Saturday, a top official said only the CDU was running at the moment and could turn out only naphtha, kerosene, and diesel.

“The Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) is still running but the operation of the depot is shut down at the moment. The CDU produces naphtha, diesel, and kerosene but cannot produce the component for the production of PMS,” the source revealed.

“All these products cannot serve the masses as the production of these products is in small quantities even if the plant runs at 100% throughput. The processing plant of 150,000 bpd capacity will commence operations in 2026; that is if money is made readily available to meet the timelines because at the moment the project has exceeded $2 billion.”

It was confirmed that only the old Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State is working and that the refinery is not trucking out PMS but blended gasoline.

The NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, in a statement, said that the old Port Harcourt Refinery is currently operating at 70% of its installed capacity, and that it produces Straight-Run Gasoline (Naphtha), blended into 1.4 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, daily.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has supported the Kwara State government’s decision to demote a school teacher at the Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, for assaulting a female corps member.

The Kwara State government had earlier sanctioned the teacher, Hamzat Fatimoh Nike, for beating the corps member at her place of work.

According to a source familiar with the situation, the incident occurred when the female corps member visited the school to collect her clearance letter. One of the teachers accused her of not greeting properly and subsequently beat her and tore her clothes.

Sam Bola Onile, Press Secretary for Kwara TESCOM, stated that an investigation revealed the teacher was guilty of unprofessional conduct.

Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC, commended the state government for its objective resolution of the issue. In a press statement, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, Director General of NYSC, applauded the sanctions imposed on the teacher, highlighting the importance of treating corps members with respect.

It was established as a result of the growing need for junior leaders to be well informed and knowledgeable to enable them administer troops under command.”

Sources who spoke to SaharaReporters on Thursday said some of the hospitalized students are also battling for survival.

Breaking: Amazon Lists Dele Farotimi’s Book on How Afe Babalola Corrupted Judiciary as Number One Bestseller Worldwide

Amazon Lists Dele Farotimi’s Book as Number One Bestseller Worldwide

Amazon has listed Dele Farotimi’s book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System,” as the number one bestseller in global politics. This surge in popularity came after Farotimi was arrested on the orders of Afe Babalola, a controversial lawyer and businessman.

The book, which initially saw low sales, gained significant attention following Farotimi’s arrest. It quickly climbed to the top of Amazon’s charts and sparked a rush to bookstores across Nigeria. Farotimi’s work criticizes corruption within the Nigerian judiciary, specifically naming Babalola as a major offender.

Farotimi, a retired lawyer, accused Babalola of compromising the Supreme Court and corrupting judges with bribes. The book, published in July 2024, supports longstanding suspicions about the influence of Babalola on the judiciary.

Farotimi was arrested in Lagos by armed policemen and taken to Ado Ekiti, where Babalola is based. After his arraignment, Farotimi was taken into custody while his bail application was adjourned until December 10. The police said the book was capable of causing public fear and breaching the peace.

Babalola was accused of influencing court judgments, a claim he had denied. The arrest has sparked public outrage with many Nigerians calling for the release of Farotimi and asking the police to investigate Babalola’s influence.

The new popularity of the book underscores public interest in the allegations against Babalola and deeper issues of corruption in the Nigerian judiciary.

Borno Deputy Governor, Over 100 Passengers Escape Plane Incident

Borno State Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur and over 100 passengers on Wednesday evening escaped a disaster when a Max Air plane developed engine trouble some few minutes after taking off from the Maiduguri International Airport.

It suffered an engine failure due to a bird strike 10 minutes into the flight to Abuja around 7 p.m. The captain quickly carried out an emergency landing back in the Maiduguri Airport. Indeed, a potential tragedy had just been averted.

A staff member of Max Air, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Thursday morning. The staff member said the bird strike caused an engine to catch fire. He said the quick action of the pilot saved the passengers.

Many passengers were in a panic immediately after the emergency landing and opted to claim their luggage and return home instead of embarking on another flight. But not wasting any time, the Max Air management had organized for another aircraft from Kano to take the passengers, among them the deputy governor, safely to Abuja.

Others in the flight, aside from the deputy governor, were a commissioner, special advisers, and senior special assistants. The affected aircraft stayed at Maiduguri International Airport for comprehensive repairs while investigations into the incident started.

Airport authorities have assured passengers of their commitment to safety and praised the professionalism of the crew for the good handling of the situation.

Five Labour Party Reps Members Dump Party, Defect to APC

The Labour Party has suffered a significant setback as five of its members in the House of Representatives officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday.

The defections were confirmed when Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read their letters on the floor of the Green Chamber. The lawmakers who have switched allegiance are Tochukwu Okere (Imo), Donatus Mathew (Kaduna), Bassey Akiba (Cross River), Iyawe Esosa (Edo), and Daulyop Fom (Plateau).

    Reasons for Defection

One of the defectors, speaking on the decision, stated that the move was driven by the diverse interests and convictions of constituents.

“You cannot just work on the decision of the people at the constituency level because you are dealing with individuals with different levels of understanding,” the lawmaker said.

    He further explained:
“I am taking this decision based on conviction. That is why whether you like it or not, there are people within the constituency who are convinced that it (defection) is the right decision for them. There are those who are skeptical, waiting for the outcome.”

The defections come amid internal crises within the Labour Party, which have raised questions about its stability. The party made headlines in the 2023 general elections by securing several key positions nationwide, but recent events suggest mounting challenges in maintaining unity.

While it remains unclear if these defections are linked to the ongoing turmoil within the Labour Party, political analysts view the move as a strategic alignment with the ruling APC to secure stronger political relevance.

    Labour Party’s Dwindling Influence?

The Labour Party’s surprise performance in the 2023 elections disrupted Nigeria’s political landscape. However, these defections may signal growing dissatisfaction among its members and the electorate.
