“It is the President who is now the overall assessor. He even engaged the Nigerian people, he said ‘go and talk to them about the programme and he will do it when he will do it.

“I want to urge Nigerians to have patience, the President will do it. It can be tonight, it can be tomorrow, it can be anytime.”

  • INTERNATIONAL BREWERIES PLC AFFIRMS CONFIDENCE IN ITS PATHWAY TO SUSTAINABLE PROFITABILITY.

INTERNATIONAL BREWERIES PLC AFFIRMS CONFIDENCE IN ITS PATHWAY TO SUSTAINABLE PROFITABILITY.

Following the successful execution of its rights issue, the largest equity offering in the Nigerian capital market, International Breweries Plc (IBPLC), has assured its investors and stakeholders of its continuous commitment to the sustainable growth of the company.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors, HRM Nnaemeka Achebe, in a statement to the company’s shareholders commended the company’s progress, particularly after its Rights Issue which enabled the repayment of its forex denominated loan which had impacted the company over the years.
According to Achebe, “the elimination of our FX exposure will improve IBPLC’s cash flows and will support the company’s return to profitability. The offer was supported by our core shareholder, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) who followed their rights in full. This is a strong indication of AB InBev’s commitment and belief in the Nigerian market opportunity and overall Nigerian economy.”
Continuing, Achebe said, “We are proud of the strides we have made in strengthening our business foundation and positioning for sustainable growth. The repayment of our outstanding $379.9 million loan, enabled by our parent company, AB InBev has bolstered our financial position. This recapitalization not only strengthens our balance sheet but also sets the stage for long-term profitability and growth. We are now better equipped to drive innovation, improve operational efficiency, and seize new opportunities.”

At its recently held 47th Annual General Meeting (AGM), IBPLC, the producers of Trophy, Hero, Budweiser, Castle Lite and other beverage brands outlined its achievements and future strategies while emphasizing the critical role shareholders have played in its progress. A key highlight was the successful Rights Issue of 161,172,395,100 shares, generating net proceeds of ₦581.7 billion.
The financial report presented at the meeting showed impressive results for the year. IBPLC recorded a 19.2% increase in revenue, rising to ₦260.6 billion in 2023 from ₦218.7 billion in 2022. Gross profit climbed by 17.3% to ₦86.3 billion, while finance cost surged by 178% from N10.6b in 2022 to N29.7b in 2023, driven largely by FX losses as a result of currency devaluation at the macro level and higher interest expense on borrowings. Despite challenging economic conditions, the company noted it remains committed to innovation, customer satisfaction, and responsible business practices.

Carlos Coutino, Managing Director of IBPLC, Highlighted the challenges posed by inflation and forex losses from devaluation of the Naira but emphasized the company’s efforts to streamline operations. “In line with our business principles, we will continue to manage our costs tightly through our different cost management strategies as we remain focused on delivering value to our customers and driving innovation.”
Coutino further said IBPLC’s commitment to excellence was underscored by its continued investment in new products, strategic partnerships, and state-of-the-art facilities, which have been key drivers of growth.

Shareholders expressed optimism about the company’s future, especially after the full repayment of its foreign loan, which will enable IBPLC to retain more of its earnings for future growth.
Eke Chibuzor, General Secretary of the Independent Shareholders Association of Nigeria (ISAN), commended the company’s financial turnaround. “While dividends have not been declared, management’s strategy is clear, and the 19% revenue growth shows progress. The fact that the company has repaid its loan with funds from the Rights Issue is a significant achievement. The future looks promising for both IBPLC and its shareholders.” Shareholder Mrs. Akinlola Modupe Temitayo echoed these sentiments, expressing confidence in the company’s trajectory.

David Tomlinson, IBPLC’s Finance Director, reiterated the company’s allegiance to sustainable profitability. “Our focus remains on long-term growth. Last year, we made significant progress, and, this year, our successful Rights Issue—Nigeria’s largest—allowed us to reduce more than 70% of our foreign exchange obligations. This strengthens our capital structure and provides us with the flexibility to explore growth opportunities with reduced risk.”

At the AGM, two key appointments were confirmed as board members of the company: the Corporate Affairs and Regulatory Director, Temitope Oguntokun, as Executive Director, and Chijioke Nkechinyere Ugochukwu as Independent Non-Executive Director.
The Rights Issue, which opened on May 21, 2024, and closed on June 10, 2024, offered shareholders the chance to increase their ownership by subscribing to six new shares for every one held, at ₦3.65 per share. The offer also attracted new investors, contributing to the company’s expansion.
With approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the basis of allotment, the Rights Issue has been completed, marking a transformative moment for IBPLC. By converting long-term debt into equity, the company is now well-positioned to pursue new growth initiatives with less financial burden and greater stability.

  • How US is Scrambling to Influence Israel’s Response to Iran’s Missile Attack

How US is Scrambling to Influence Israel’s Response to Iran’s Missile Attack

US Urgently Tries to Shape Israel’s Response to Iran’s Missile Attack.

Amid growing tensions in the Middle East, US President Joe Biden has been working urgently to influence Israel’s response to a significant missile attack launched by Iran. In the aftermath of the Islamic Republic firing around 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, Biden, alongside his G7 counterparts, has set a clear boundary for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The message: retaliation is justified, but it must be proportional.

The US administration has expressed concern that a major Israeli strike, particularly one targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, could lead to a broader conflict in the region. “All seven of us agree that they have a right to respond, but they should respond in proportion,” Biden said, offering a glimpse into the international consensus on the issue.

Tinubu’s Govt Removes VAT on Diesel, Cooking Gas: What It Means for Nigerians?

    A Growing Conflict

Iran’s missile barrage, which followed the killings of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other Iran-backed militants in Lebanon and Gaza, has put Israel on high alert. Palestinian youths in Ramallah were seen inspecting the remains of projectiles in the aftermath of the strike, while tensions mounted as the world waited for Israel’s next move.

The United States, well aware of Israel’s likely retaliation, has supported its right to respond but has been firm in urging restraint. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held discussions with his French, British, German, and Italian counterparts, reiterating that any Israeli strike must avoid escalating the situation further.

“We don’t want to see any action that would lead to a full-blown regional war,” said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller on Wednesday. He stressed that Washington is in continuous dialogue with Israeli officials to shape a response that would avoid plunging the region into greater instability.

    Israeli Decision Under Pressure

Netanyahu, facing pressure at home to act decisively, is reportedly weighing his options. Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has publicly called for a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, which he believes would “cripple” the regime in Tehran. However, the US is wary of such a move, knowing that it could spark all-out conflict across the Middle East.

Israel’s military successes against Hamas in Gaza and the assassination of Nasrallah have emboldened some in the country to push for a more aggressive stance against Iran. But US officials remain cautious, remembering that when Iran launched its first missile attack on Israel in April, Washington’s pressure played a role in limiting Israel’s response.

This time, however, the stakes appear higher. Iran’s response to its militant leaders’ deaths was much stronger than in April, raising concerns that a tit-for-tat could spiral out of control.

    A Fragile Diplomatic Line

As tensions simmer, the US is keen to ensure that the situation does not escalate further. Officials in Washington fear that an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities could ignite a regional war, bringing chaos to the already volatile Middle East.

In recent days, Biden has refrained from directly speaking to Netanyahu but noted, “We’ve been talking to Bibi’s people the whole time. And it’s not necessary to talk to Bibi. I’ll probably be talking to him relatively soon.”

Despite the close alliance between the US and Israel, some analysts believe Washington’s influence over Netanyahu is waning. The Israeli government, still reeling from nearly a year of conflict with Hamas, is in crisis mode, and its next move could define the future of the conflict.

As Netanyahu contemplates his decision, the world waits with bated breath to see whether the Israeli government will strike Iran hard, or heed US calls for a measured response that avoids all-out war.

For now, Washington’s balancing act continues as it tries to support its key ally while preventing the Middle East from spiraling into chaos.

He said some of such incentives would include, but not limited to VAT modification order 2024 and notice of tax incentives for deep offshore oil and gas production.

He said this is in line with the Oil and Gas Companies (tax incentives, exemption, remission etc.) Order 2024.

He explained further: “In addition, the Notice of Tax Incentives for Deep Offshore Oil & Gas Production provides new tax reliefs for deep offshore projects.

“This is to ensure that Nigeria’s deep offshore basin is cynically tipped to be one of the most formidable destinations of proposed oil and gas investments anywhere in the world,” he added.

Details Emerge Amidst Fresh Move by 36 Governors to Delay Implementation of LGA Autonomy

State governors have reportedly made a fresh move to delay the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments.

The governors reportedly pile pressure on top federal officials to soften the implementation.

Recall that the Supreme Court, in a landmark judgment on July 11, 2024, upheld the financial independence of the 774 local government councils in the country. It ruled that it was illegal and unconstitutional for governors to manage and withhold local government funds. The apex court then ordered that Accountant-General of the Federation should pay local government allocations directly to their accounts.

Following the judgment, the Federal Government inaugurated a 10-man inter-ministerial committee to enforce the judgment of the Apex Court. The committee, which is to be chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, consists of such high-calibre members as the Minister of Finance Wale Edun, the Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Olayemi Cardoso.

But state governors appear to be in rebellion against the Federal Government’s effort to enforce the judgment, as sources close to the Presidency said that there had been frantic lobby by the governors of the implementation to ensure it does not see the light of day.

Groups from civil society have come out to criticize the governors’ moves, as is shown by the statements from the Chairman of CACOL, Debo Adeniran, and the United Global Resolve for Peace. Adeniran said, “We know that they didn’t like what the President did by asking the Supreme Court to adjudicate on the matter. They are actually mounting pressure, not just lobbying, mounting pressure on all forces to ensure that the implementation of that order doesn’t come.”.

That lobby is uncalled for, it’s not necessary and the President must not pay heed to it. If the President insists, then they will not succeed because the rule of law must prevail; the Supreme Court has ruled, it’s just for them to enforce this and nothing must stand in the way of it, otherwise we would have put the rule of law in jeopardy and that’s not good for us.

Different reactions have trailed the development from local government officials and chairmen, some welcoming direct allocation while others are still sceptical.

According to the Chairman of Kwami Local Government Area of Gombe State, Dr Ahmed Wali, “We are hoping to get the allocation in October as plans are in the pipeline to open accounts for local governments with CBN.”

However, the newly inaugurated Chairman of Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, Mallam Adam Rufai, said the council was not aware of the said payment of the allocation.

“We don’t know yet because we were just elected into the council. We have no information on whether the allocation is going to be paid directly to the council by the Federal Government. No one has given us such information,” he said.

A top official in a local government council in the state revealed that following the Supreme Court’s judgment, all local governments in the state opened fresh commercial bank accounts with the view to receiving allocations. The source, however, expressed doubts over getting direct funding.

“We have gotten salaries for September, but I doubt if we have gotten direct allocation from the Federal Government yet,” the source said.

  • Gov Fubara Declares Public Holidays, Restricts Movement Ahead Of Rivers LG Polls

Gov Fubara Declares Public Holidays, Restricts Movement Ahead Of Rivers LG Polls

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared Thursday, October 3, and Friday, October 4, as public holidays to enable residents travel to their communities and participate in the upcoming Local Government elections scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024.

In a statewide broadcast from the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Fubara announced a restriction on vehicular movement from midnight on Friday, October 4, until 5:00 pm on election day.

He explained that the measures were necessary to ensure smooth and peaceful elections.

Fubara outlined the rationale behind the local government elections, noting that the tenures of the chairmen and councillors of the 23 local government councils expired on June 17, 2023.

“I lawfully constituted caretaker committees to temporarily administer the 23 local government areas pending when the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, would conduct the elections,” he said.

He referenced the Supreme Court’s July 11, 2024 judgment, which prohibited the administration of local governments by unelected officers, and ordered an immediate halt to statutory allocations for such councils.

“Following Mr President’s intervention, the period for compliance with the Supreme Court’s judgment was graciously extended by three months, which will expire on the 31st of October 2024,” the governor explained.

Governor Fubara further disclosed that RSIEC had made all necessary arrangements to conduct the elections on October 5, 2024, as directed.

He added that a Rivers State High Court judgment delivered on September 4, 2024, also mandated the conduct of the elections, using the 2023 INEC voter register.

“As of today, RSIEC has expressed and demonstrated concrete and verifiable capacity and readiness to conduct the 2024 Rivers State Local Government Elections on the 5th of October 2024,” Fubara said.

He also revealed that 17 out of 18 registered political parties, including the All Progressives Congress, APC, had submitted candidates for the election.

“As of today, over 10 states in Nigeria have conducted local government council elections using the 2023 INEC Voters’ Register since the Supreme Court’s judgment and Rivers State cannot be an exception,” he stated.

Fubara emphasized the constitutional and legal obligations of the state to hold the elections, citing the potential loss of statutory allocations to the 23 councils and the state’s obligation to comply with both the Supreme Court and High Court rulings.

“In light of these developments, I assure every resident that the election for the 23 Local Government Councils in Rivers State shall be held on Saturday, 5th October 2024, throughout the State,” he reaffirmed.

The governor assured citizens that adequate funding and logistics had been provided for RSIEC to conduct a free, fair, and credible election.

He also urged registered voters to go to their polling units to cast their votes, assuring them that security personnel would be deployed to maintain order.

“To this end, I hereby declare Thursday and Friday, the 3rd and 4th of October 2024, as public holidays for citizens to travel to their communities and participate in the election,” the governor said.

He added that the movement restriction was aimed at ensuring safety and compliance during the voting process.

“Furthermore, I hereby place a total restriction on vehicular and human movements into, within, and out of the State, and the Local Government Areas, from midnight of Friday, 4th October 2024, to 5.00 p.m. on Saturday, 5th October 2024, except for persons and vehicles with valid identifications who are on election and other essential duties,” he declared.

Governor Fubara also instructed the police and security agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone attempting to violate the restrictions, expressing his appreciation for their cooperation in securing the state during the elections.

“As citizens, we all owe our State the commitment to support RSIEC to succeed in delivering on its constitutional duty to conduct a free, fair, and credible Local Government Council election to usher in a new set of democratically elected leaders to administer the 23 Local Government Councils,” Fubara concluded.

  • Biafra: Reason Behind Nnamdi Kanu’s Request For Justice Nyako To Step Down – Legal Team

Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team has given explanation why they asked  Justice Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High Court to recuse herself from his trial.

Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

On September 24, Kanu had demanded that Justice Nyako step down from his trial because he lacked confidence in her judgement.

Despite arguments from lawyers of the Nigerian Government, the judge recused herself from the trial.

However, a team of Kanu’s lawyers led by the lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor said their client was only exercising his constitutional right.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Ejimakor said the Department of State Services, DSS, has continued to disregard court ruling allowing the legal team unmonitored access to their client.

According to Ejimakor: “We called this impromptu press briefing to recap what happened in court on September 24. What happened is an example of a defendant exercising his right under the constitution when he loses confidence in the court before whom he has been brought to trial.

“It’s nothing extraordinary, it didn’t have to happen but it happened. We have contended, filed motions upon motions before the High Court submitting evidence that where Kanu is currently detained complicates his preparation for trial because of several unconstitutional conducts by the DSS.

“The DSS seizes our legal documents, listens to our conversations, and this has led to an extraordinary court order by the former Federal High Court judge handling this case that we be provided a clean room free from listening devices for us to be effective in preparing him for trial. That clean room was not provided and the DSS continues to listen to our conversations each time we go there.

“Under Section 36 of the Constitution, this is wrong. Given that DSS has become very stubborn in complying with this court order, we filed a contempt proceedings which is pending before the Federal High Court but there is no change in circumstance.

“So, on September 24 when the judge insisted that trial must proceed in the face of all these anomalies, our client had no choice but to recuse the judge in line with his constitutional right because with this atmosphere of not being able to prepare for his trial, how could the judge insist that trial must continue, this was exactly what led to the loss of confidence in the judge and request for recusal.”

Another member of the legal team, lawyer Nnemeka Ejiofor assured that Kanu didn’t disrespect Justice Nyako in any way by asking her to recuse herself from his trial.

Ejiofor said Kanu was not feeling secured and his fundamental right protected, hence the decision to ask the judge to recuse herself from his case.

Ejiofor said: “Some people including those in government circle tend to see what happened on September 24 in court as a sign of disrespect to the judge and judiciary but we must clear the air. Everybody who appears before the court of law must have that feeling of being in a secured environment where his or her right must be protected and seen to be protected. Once you are before a court and you don’t feel that your fundamental right is being protected then you have the right to request the judge to recuse himself. This can happen for so many reasons.

“There are reasons why Kanu had to take that very tough option of asking the judge to recuse herself, one of which is that he believes that the judge was disrespectful to the Supreme Court’s judgement that his bail be restored.

“Kanu felt if a Federal High Court judge does not respect the decision of the Supreme Court, then there is no need standing trial before such a judge. Be that as it may, we feel the need to enlighten the public that it was not an act of disrespect whatsoever to Justice Nyako. She remains a sound and astute judge and one we all love to appear before.”

In a similar vein, Lawyer Jude Ugwuanyi explained that the legal team of the IPOB leader are prepared to appear before any judge who would be unbiased.

He lamented that Kanu’s continued stay in detention was escalating insecurity in the Southeast.

“The Federal Government is nor ready to proceed with the trial of Nnamdi Kanu because the Southeasterners are the worst victims of insecurity. I lost a brother in final year in Faculty of Law to this insecurity. And one wonders at the interest of federal government in not being open to trial. Each time we go to court, they claim they are not ready for trial because you can’t be ready for trial when the atmosphere is not sufficient for the defendant to properly conduct the defense.

“Instead of giving us free atmosphere for a conducive trial, they are insisting on trial while our client is handicapped. And when we see that it’s not a fair trial, we ask for time to do the needful but they say its impossible and that was why Kanu insisted that this trial can’t go on. If the Federal Government should consider the insecurity in the Southeast and its primary responsibility is to consider the citizens, then they should allow this man either bail or give him enough room to discuss with his lawyers to effectively defend himself.

“Kanu was right to say I need another judge, he never requested for a particular judge but said any other judge of the High Court is okay. We are ready to proceed with the trial with any other judge given to us provided we foresee non-bias and impartiality,” he added.
