  • BREAKING: Atiku, Peter Obi, Kwankwaso Resume Merger Talks Ahead of 2027 Presidency

BREAKING: Atiku, Peter Obi, Kwankwaso Resume Merger Talks Ahead of 2027 Presidency

In a significant political development, three of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition figures—Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso—are reportedly engaged in discussions aimed at forming a merger ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The discussions are part of a broader strategy to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to information obtained by Naija News, the trio’s objective is to create a formidable coalition that can unseat the ruling APC, driven by growing concerns over hunger and widespread insecurity across the nation.

Breaking: PDP Summons Wike Over Anti-party Activities

A spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made the announcement on Monday, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape as the country approaches the next election cycle.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program, Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, confirmed that discussions between the opposition leaders are ongoing.

He noted that Atiku of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) are willing to set aside personal ambitions to forge a united front against the APC in 2027.

Abdullahi reflected on the missed opportunities from the last election, highlighting how internal party disputes led to the loss of key figures such as Nyesom Wike, Kwankwaso, and Obi, who he believes could have helped the PDP secure victory against Tinubu.

“We’ve lost Kwankwaso, we’ve lost Peter Obi, all of these people. Imagine if they were in the party; we would have won the elections,” Abdullahi said.

He further emphasized that the addition of any one of these leaders could have closed the narrow margin by which the PDP was defeated, preventing the current state of “despair and despondency” in the country.

When asked about efforts to bring Obi, Kwankwaso, Wike, and others back into the PDP, Abdullahi confirmed that discussions are indeed ongoing. He mentioned that recent interactions between Peter Obi and Atiku, as well as meetings involving Obi and Nasir El-Rufai, are part of these efforts.

Abdullahi also addressed the potential outcomes of these discussions, suggesting that one of the opposition leaders might ultimately yield to the other to ensure a clear and unified direction for the 2027 elections.

He underscored that the collective goal of rescuing Nigerians from the current hardships should take precedence over individual political ambitions.

“Atiku is saying if it is better for him to get Nigeria out of this hopelessness, he would do so,” Abdullahi stated, adding that Atiku’s decision to run is not about personal entitlement but about exercising his democratic rights.

He also affirmed that both Peter Obi and Atiku are fully qualified to lead, and whichever of them secures the party’s ticket will receive full support in the bid to “salvage Nigerians out of this situation.”

Breaking: PDP Summons Wike Over Anti-party Activities

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has summoned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to answer for alleged anti-party activities.

The former Rivers State Governor has been called to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee.

This development was confirmed on Monday by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, during an interview with Channels TV.

He revealed that Wike had been formally notified through a letter from the party, requesting his presence before the disciplinary body.

Abdullahi expressed the party’s disapproval of Wike’s recent remarks, particularly his statement about “putting fire in their states,” which was directed at PDP governors.

He emphasized that such comments were inappropriate and that the party expects Wike to exercise more caution in his choice of words.

“Wike should be able to manage his words carefully; that was a very disappointing remark. We weren’t expecting him to say that, and we are not with him on that, to be honest with you,” Abdullahi stated.

Understanding the Dollar to Naira Black Market for Forex

    What is the Black Market?

The black market refers to unofficial exchange channels where currencies are traded without government regulation. This market often provides more competitive rates due to the high demand and limited supply of foreign currencies.

Week 9 Bet9ja pool code for this Saturday August 31, 2024

Why Do People Use the Black Market?

People turn to the black market due to:

    • Favorable Rates: Often higher than official rates.
    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates.

    Economic Policies

Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. Policy adjustments aimed at stabilizing the naira impact the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand

The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability

Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions

Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. A significant drop in oil prices, for instance, negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and  Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

Several factors contribute to the disparity:

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy

    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.

APC Propaganda Busted: Police Reuse 2023 Photo of Armoured Personnel Carrier Under Buhari to Falsely Showcase Tinubu Commissioning Same Equipment in 2024

On August 31, 2024, the Nigerian Police Force found itself at the center of controversy after it was revealed that a photo used to showcase the commissioning of new Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) by President Bola Tinubu was actually from 2023.

The image, originally taken during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, was reused by the police to falsely promote the current government’s efforts to enhance national security.

Notorious Bandit Bello Turji Seizes Nigerian Army Armoured Vehicles Worth N1.59bn (Viral Video)

Police Spokesperson Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi shared the photo on social media, claiming that “another set of APCs is ready for commissioning by the president,” adding that the development was “commendable and awesome.”

However, this claim is untrue. A check by our reporter using Google Lens, a fact-checking tool, showed that the image was first published in 2023 by Freedom Online. Concerned citizens, who recognized the photo from a previous event held in 2023, sparked outrage over what many viewed as deliberate misinformation.

The X (formerly Twitter) community responsible for fact-checking placed a note under the post and tagged it as false information and propaganda. The X community note reads: “This is clearly propaganda by the incompetent Nigerian Police Force. The image used was taken from a news post from February 2023, where the former President of Nigeria, Buhari (another incompetent President like the current one), was said to have commissioned the Armoured Personnel Carriers.”

APC Propaganda Busted: Police Reuse 2023 Photo of Armoured Personnel Carrier Under Buhari to Falsely Showcase Tinubu Commissioning Same Equipment in 2024

The incident has led to widespread criticism of the police and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for engaging in what has been described as propaganda.

This false representation undermines public trust in both the police force and the current administration. The reuse of the 2023 photo raises serious questions about the integrity of official communications and the lengths to which the government may go to portray its achievements, particularly in the sensitive area of national security.

Nigeria Loses Armoured Vehicles Worth N1.59bn to Bandits

Bandit kingpin Bello Turji and his gang have captured two Nigerian Army Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles worth N1.59 billion and a significant amount of ammunition.

A viral video circulating online shows Turji and his associates celebrating the takeover.

An MRAP vehicle is worth at least $500,000, an equivalent of N796 million. Going by the report, Nigeria lost N1.59 billion to the bandits during the crossfire.

A video circulating online shows Turji and his men celebrating their victory over the military, further escalating the tension in the region.

The incident occurred after a Nigerian Army unit attempted to engage the bandits at a location identified within Turji’s camp.

According to counterinsurgency and security expert ZagaZola Makama, the troops received intelligence about a high-level meeting among bandits in the area and were swiftly deployed. However, their mission was hampered when their vehicle got stuck in marshy terrain, leaving them vulnerable.

As the troops faced heavy gunfire from the bandits, they struggled to maintain their position. The situation was exacerbated by adverse weather conditions, preventing air support from arriving on time. Despite attempts to recover their stranded vehicle using another Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, both vehicles became trapped in the mud, forcing the soldiers to withdraw.

The bandits, led by Turji, later appeared at the scene, firing shots into the air and boasting about their success in overpowering the troops and seizing their equipment. The Nigerian Army has yet to officially comment on the incident.

This bold attack underscores the ongoing challenges the Nigerian military faces in combating banditry in the region, as well as the increasing boldness of groups led by figures like Turji. The situation continues to develop, with the potential for further escalation as tensions rise.

On August 29, the troops attempted to retrieve their stuck vehicles but were unsuccessful. With the situation becoming overwhelming, they withdrew, leaving behind two MRAPs, which the bandits later set ablaze.”

MRAPs have V-shaped hulls that deflect explosive forces from land mines or improvised explosive devices (IEDs) below the vehicle, thereby protecting the vehicles and the passengers inside them.

This loss, the armed forces down two MRAPs, is just another setback in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

IPOB’s Lead Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor Accuses Tinubu of Tolerating Selective Injustice Against Igbos

Tinubu Tolerating Selective Injustice Against Igbos ,  Lawyer Ejimakor  Alleged.

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has accused President Bola Tinubu of tolerating what he describes as “selective injustice” against the Igbo people. Ejimakor’s allegations suggest that this form of discrimination has worsened under Tinubu’s administration.

Ogun Government Calls for Collective Action to Eradicate Open Defecation

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ejimakor argued that while Igbos experienced some level of selective injustice during the administrations of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, the situation significantly deteriorated under President Muhammadu Buhari and has now reached “genocidal proportions” under Tinubu.

Ejimakor’s post reads: “What is now emerging in the open (thanks to social media) as institutionalized ‘selective injustice’ against #Ndigbo has always been there. It reduced slightly under OBJ & GEJ, peaked to a new high under PMB & has attained genocidal proportions. Shocking that TINUBU tolerates it.”

The accusation comes amid ongoing claims of marginalization from the people of the Southeast, which have fueled the agitation for the secessionist movement of Biafra. Ejimakor’s comments add to the growing discourse on the treatment of the Igbo people under successive Nigerian governments.

The Ogun State Government has emphasized the importance of collective efforts from stakeholders to identify and address the root causes of open defecation within the state. This call was made by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environmental Protection, Oluwadare Kehinde, during a media briefing in Abeokuta earlier this week.

Kehinde highlighted the current administration’s unwavering commitment to eliminating open defecation, stressing that collaboration with the private sector, community leaders, and Community Development Associations (CDAs) is essential to raising awareness and educating citizens on the dangers associated with the practice.

“Public awareness campaigns are the first step in eliminating this menace,” Kehinde stated. El-Rufai Dismisses Concerns Over Social Media Posts, Says He Doesn’t Care About Interpretations.

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has made it clear that he is unfazed by how his social media posts are interpreted by the public. In a post shared on his X handle (formerly Twitter) on the evening of August 31, El-Rufai stated that he doesn’t “give a damn” about how his posts are interpreted, misinterpreted, or re-interpreted.

His declaration came just hours after he shared a cryptic message on the platform, where he asserted that falsehood, no matter how long it stands, will eventually fall, allowing the truth to prevail.

El-Rufai’s recent posts have sparked discussions online, with many wondering about the context behind his statements. Despite the stir, the former governor appears resolute in his stance on public opinion and social media discourse.

Akpabio, Abbas In Fresh Trouble As SERAP Drags Them To Court Over Jumbo Allowances

SERAP Sues Senate President Akpabio, Speaker Abbas Over Lawmakers’ Allowances.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, accusing them of refusing to halt the unlawful practice of setting lawmakers’ allowances and running costs.

SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the case was filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1289/2024.

The organization is seeking an order of mandamus to compel Akpabio and Abbas to reveal the exact amount of monthly running costs paid to lawmakers and to provide details of how these funds are spent.

SERAP argues that the National Assembly’s practice of fixing its own salaries, allowances, and running costs violates the Nigerian Constitution. Specifically, they cite paragraph N, section 32(d) of the Third Schedule, which they say makes it illegal for the National Assembly to set its own financial compensation.

This lawsuit follows allegations made by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who claimed that lawmakers were setting their salaries and allowances independently, contrary to the guidelines set by the Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMAFC).

While it has been clarified that the 109 senators in Nigeria earn a monthly salary of N1,063,860, there has been no transparency regarding the allowances they receive.

Kano South Senator, Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, recently revealed that senators receive N21 million monthly as running costs. This disclosure has led to further public scrutiny, with former Senator Shehu Sani stating that Sumaila’s revelation corroborates his earlier claims regarding the extravagant allowances enjoyed by lawmakers.

Ember Months: ‘What Nigerians Should Do Before Praying Against Accidents’ – Fr Kelvin

As the month of September begins on Sunday, ushering in what people popularly called the ’ember months’, a Catholic missionary priest working in Gambia, Fr Kelvin Ugwu, has advised Nigerian to prioritise their safety.

Ugwu said vehicle owners should make every effort to do the necessary maintenance on their vehicle before praying against accidents and blood-sucking demons.

The statement is coming at a time many Nigerians still hold the misconception suggesting a heightened risks, including road accidents, during the ’ember months’ (September, October, November, and December) than in other months.

They attribute the phenomenon to superstitious practices often referred to as ‘juju’ operations.

Although the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had severally in the past dispelled the widespread notions linking the ember months with superstitious, many still hold tightly to the belief.

In a post on his Facebook page on Sunday, listed five things people should do to avoid exposing themselves to danger.

He said: “While you pray against accidents and blood-sucking demons these “Ember” months, please do us the favour of keeping the following 5 points in mind.

“Oil: Make every effort to do the necessary maintenance on your vehicle. Change the oil, check your breaks, change your shock absorber if necessary, and check your car coolant.

“Tyre: Do not compromise on your car tyres; you are putting yourself in danger. The tyres of the car are what support the vehicle’s load, transmit traction and braking forces to the road surface, absorb road shocks, and change and maintain the direction of travel. . . If they are bald, they are bad.

“Alcohol: If you must drink, don’t drive; if you must drive, don’t drink. Alcohol consumption remains a major cause of road accidents.

“Seatbelt: Use your seatbelt always. If you think the distance is too short for you to use a seatbelt, then it means the distance is too short for you to drive. Trek instead.

“Speeding: The road is not an athletic ground where you compete with other drivers on who can run the fastest. There is no medal for the driver who overtook every vehicle on the way. Kill some of those childish instinct making you think the mark of a driver is to speed. Speed kills.”

Workers To Wait Long For New Minimum Wage Payment As Tinubu’s Govt Drags Feet On Implementation

Tinubu’s Govt Delays Minimum Wage Payment, Leaving Workers Waiting.

Despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent approval of the N70,000 National Minimum Wage Act on July 29, 2024, many states are struggling to implement the new wage law. Currently, only Adamawa State has started paying the new wage, while other states have made minimal progress, primarily establishing implementation committees.

The delay is exacerbated by the federal government’s failure to provide a consequential adjustment template needed for comprehensive implementation. Labour unions have expressed frustration, noting that negotiations with state governments are ineffective without this crucial template. They have urged patience among workers until the federal government releases the necessary adjustment guidelines.

Prior to the president’s approval, Edo State had already increased its minimum wage to N70,000, making it one of only two states, alongside Adamawa, to comply with the new standard. In Akwa Ibom State, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has yet to begin discussions on the new wage, awaiting the federal government’s circular on consequential adjustments.

In Zamfara, the government plans to form a committee to determine how to implement the new wage. The NLC in Kano State and Sokoto State have also expressed concerns, waiting for the federal government’s guidelines before taking further action.

Plateau State and Cross River State have yet to decide on their approach to the new wage, with the state governments still reviewing their financial capabilities and potential implications.

Ondo State has pledged to implement the new wage but has not set a start date. Similarly, Enugu State has established a committee to oversee the implementation, with a deadline for the report set for one month.

Federal civil servants are also facing delays. Although the minimum wage was approved, its implementation has not been reflected in August salaries. Union leaders are pressing the federal government to act swiftly and ensure that the wage adjustments are included in the September paychecks, highlighting the urgency due to the rising cost of living.

The situation underscores the need for prompt action to prevent further distress among workers and ensure that the new minimum wage delivers the intended financial relief.

NYSC Rejects HND Graduates Without IT Certification at Orientation Camps.

As the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp opened nationwide, Polytechnic graduates with Higher National Diplomas (HND) who lacked Industrial Training (IT) certification were turned away.

NYSC’s new policy requires IT certification for those fulfilling their national service obligations, leading to the suspension of the screening process for certain HND graduates.

The policy affects graduates from polytechnics and monotechnics mobilised for Batch B Stream II, who must present evidence of their mandatory IT to participate in the camp.

During a visit to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja, our correspondent observed a smooth registration process for those with all required documents. However, some corps members were rejected due to missing IT certificates.

Affected individuals expressed frustration, lamenting that they were prepared to serve but faced exclusion over certification issues. They hope for a resolution that allows them to meet their service obligations without penalty for documentation gaps.

One anonymous corps member described the situation as poorly timed, noting that peers were already serving without facing this new hurdle.

Mrs. Hauwa Collins, a nursing mother, reported that the registration process was efficient for those with complete documentation. She noted that while some faced difficulties, those with all required documents had no issues.

At the time of reporting, corps members continued to arrive at the camp, and the resolution for those affected remained unclear. Security measures at the camp restricted further access, limiting additional information from being obtained.
