    Key indicators such as output, new orders, and stock of raw materials recorded positive movements, with index points of 50.8, 50.5, and 51.3, respectively. However, employment figures declined to 48.7 points, and suppliers’ delivery times remained unchanged at 50.0 points.

     

    The August PMI data suggests a potential turnaround in Nigeria’s economic trajectory, raising optimism for continued recovery after a prolonged period of contraction.

     

    The PMI survey for August 2024 was conducted from August 12-16 and involved purchasing and supply executives from industry, services, and agriculture. The PMI is calculated based on responses regarding changes in business activities, with an index above 50.0 indicating expansion, below 50.0 indicating contraction, and 50.0 indicating no change.

     

    The composite output index stood at 50.8 points in August, signaling growth in production for the second consecutive month. Of the 36 sub-sectors reviewed, 19 reported increased production, with primary metals showing the highest expansion. In contrast, 14 sub-sectors experienced declines, with non-metallic mineral products recording the most significant drop. The fabricated metal products sector, including electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply, remained stable.

     

    The composite new orders index for August was 50.5 points, indicating an increase in incoming business/orders. Of the 36 sub-sectors, 15 reported growth in new orders, with primary metals showing the highest increase. Plastics, rubber products, and transportation equipment sectors remained stable, while 19 sub-sectors reported lower levels of new orders.

     

    The industrial sector PMI was 49.2 points, marking the seventh consecutive month of contraction but showing improvement from earlier months. While mining, quarrying, electricity, gas, water supply, and construction subsectors reported expansions, the manufacturing subsector declined in August.

     

    Among the 17 subsectors surveyed, nine recorded contractions, and eight reported expansions. The transportation equipment subsector experienced the most significant contraction, while primary metals saw the highest expansion.

    Reports indicate that one of Cheptegei’s daughters witnessed the assault. According to Kenya’s The Standard, the child tried to flee to get help but was kicked by Marangach. A neighbor attempted to extinguish the flames with water but was unsuccessful.

     

    Marangach also suffered burns to 30 percent of his body during the incident.

     

    The Uganda Athletics Federation expressed profound sadness over Cheptegei’s death and condemned the violence. “We call for justice,” the federation stated on X. “May her soul rest in peace.”

    The National Economic Council (NEC) has imposed a September 9 deadline for four states to submit their reports on the establishment of state police.

     

    The NEC will review comprehensive reports from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on that date. States that fail to meet this deadline will be subject to the NEC’s decisions regarding state police.

    Additionally, the Federal Government has allocated ₦3 billion in aid to states affected by severe flooding.

     

    At the conclusion of the NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Acting Oyo State Governor Abdulraheem Lawal reported that all states were expected to submit their reports for the NEC’s review.

    The discussion on state police was driven by ongoing security challenges across regions, including the Northeast, Northcentral, Southwest, Southeast, and South-South.

     

    Lawal emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance national security. He noted that last year, the NEC had asked states to provide reports on the establishment of state police. States that fail to meet the September 9 deadline will be bound by the NEC’s decisions.

     

    He said, “An update on the establishment of state police was considered, and this was as a result of the security challenges that we have across the nation, in the Northeast, Northcentral, Southwest, Southeast, and South-South, so that we would have a robust security in our nation.

    “For that purpose, sometime last year, NEC considered the establishment of state police and asked states to make submissions of considerations.

Incidentally, four states couldn’t submit, and for that purpose, NEC decided that those states must make their submissions on or before Monday next week; otherwise, whatever decision next date on the establishment of State Police will be binding on those states that refused to submit.”

     

    Although the specific names of the four states that have yet to submit their reports were not disclosed, sources identified them as Adamawa, Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and the FCT.

     

    In addition, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed provided insights into the flood situation, highlighting the federal government’s ₦3 billion relief fund. Mohammed described the severe impact of the flooding, especially in the Northeast, where critical infrastructure such as roads and bridges has been damaged, affecting households, schools, and other essential services.

     

    He said, “The flood was more devastating along the Northeast axis where a major artery between Kano and Maiduguri has been cut off, with devastating effects on households, schools, bridges, and other means of livelihood. Lives were lost and a lot of properties were also destroyed.

     

    “Of course, that has really provided a big challenge to us as a government and as a people in our states because we need to provide more food security. Already, farmlands are submerged, and therefore there’s a need for collaboration between all the tiers of government to ensure food security.”

     

    Mohammed noted that this year’s harvest is expected to be significantly affected due to the floods. He called for coordinated efforts between the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and state ministries to ensure a comprehensive response to the crisis.

     

    Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule supported this perspective, noting that a new governance structure has been established to manage flood relief efforts.

In addition to the fuel hike, the TUC expressed deep concern over the recent 250 percent increase in electricity tariffs, which they argue will disproportionately impact the poorest in society.

    Okoye Ogochukwu, a Lagos-based mother of three, has cried out for justice after enduring severe complications from botched surgeries performed at Faith City Hospital in Ajao Estate.

     

     

    In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, Ogochukwu shared her harrowing experience, which began after a caesarean section (C-section) in May 2023 to deliver her baby girl..

     

    Following the delivery, she noted that she began feeling severe pain in her abdomen with swollen legs.

     

    When she complained, she noted that instead of taking it with seriousness, her doctor, Ejim Chibike, made a joke about her pains, saying she was getting fat and needed to exercise.

     

    She stated, “On the 2nd of May 2023, I was at Faith Clinic at Ajao estate. I had been admitted there days before for a caesarean section. On that, I had my baby girl via CS and three days later, I was discharged. The doctor who did the CS and saw me through my antenatal was Dr Ejim Chibike. So, after the childbirth, I noticed that my legs had begun to swell up whereas they didn’t swell up during my pregnancy.

     

    “But after I had the surgery, I noticed my legs were swelling up which I complained about and they said it was normal, I was discharged and I went home. I had a routine appointment with Dr Ejim, a week check-up after I had given birth. I came to the hospital and I complained to him that my stomach was painful to touch, and my legs and whole body were in serious pain.

     

    “So, I complained to him that I didn’t know why I was still feeling like this even though that was my first CS, I’ve had two other pregnancies and my stomach should have gone down but the doctor made a joke about it that I should lose weight that I’m getting fat.”

     

    Only a few days later, her condition took a drastic turn for the worse. She was rushed back to the hospital, where she was told that Chibike was unavailable. Instead, another doctor, Johnson, attended to her and ordered a series of scans and X-rays where the result showed retained products of conception in her womb.

     

    With this, Ogochukwu said she underwent another surgery to remove the object, noting that despite undergoing a second surgery at the same hospital to remove the object, her condition worsened as the surgeon left some stitches unremoved, leaving her with another hopeless as the pain continued.

     

    She said, “I then insisted on seeing Dr Chibike since he carried out the caesarean section after staying in the hospital for days and it got to a point that it was my husband making noise about the whole issue that we needed to see Dr Chibike. Later we noticed that he was practically avoiding us as they kept saying he was busy attending to other patients. Despite being in the hospital for five days, he didn’t come to see me.

     

    “After my husband’s outburst, they came and told us that I needed to go to LASUTH to do a CT scan and we did and came back to the hospital. On getting back, they had gotten a general surgeon because they didn’t have one before. Just a look at me, he asked if I had gone through a CS and replied yes I did. He could not even touch me because I was in severe pain.

     

    “I was then booked in for surgery the next day by 8 am. On the night before the surgery, they brought a bill of almost N1.4m which we paid and they carried out the surgery the next day. When I regained consciousness after the surgery, I noticed pipes connected to my body. When I asked what they were meant for, I was told that when they opened me up, the abscesses had gotten to some delicate parts of my body so they couldn’t reach there to get the abscesses out.

    “Eventually, a few days after the surgery, the surgeon came and removed the pipes and I was discharged after asking us to pay a bill of about N800,000. We pleaded with them for a discount but they declined. My husband then paid the bills and I was discharged. Meanwhile, Dr Chibike practically disappeared. They asked me to come a few days later to remove the stitches.”

     

    She added, “We were relieved that everything was over. So, I went back for that and the doctor was pulling the stitches painfully and I was shouting in pain all through the process. So, another doctor you heard my scream came in and saw what was going on. He said the doctor removing the stitches was not doing it well so he took over.

     

    “Unfortunately, the new doctor didn’t remove all the stitches leaving a part of it in my abdomen. So days after, my stomach started swelling again and I was in pain. So, I called my aunty who advised me to rush to a hospital in Oshodi to do another scan for us to know what was wrong.

     

    “Meanwhile, before this, I had started discharging abscesses. So, when I was getting ready to go to the hospital, we discovered a stitch from a hole in my under stomach which was from the initial surgery. The whole busted and the abscesses were just flowing out in large quantity from the whole. It was a mess. I had to use cotton wool to pad it up then we raced it to the hospital.”

     

    In the span of just two months, she said she underwent three traumatic surgeries, each compounding her suffering, adding that doctors eventually informed her that her womb was severely damaged and she would never be able to have more children.

     

    “I wanted to have three children, but now I can’t have any more,” she said, her voice heavy with grief.

     

    As if the physical and emotional toll wasn’t enough, she said the financial strain became unbearable as the family spent over N3 million on medical bills, with no assistance or acknowledgement from Faith Clinic, where the nightmare began, adding that when they sought compensation from the hospital, they were offered a mere N150,000—a sum that felt like an insult to the pain and suffering they endured.

     

    She is demanding full reimbursement of the medical costs and a formal apology from Faith Clinic, which has yet to respond to their demands.

     

    “They caused all this pain and still refused to take responsibility. I want the money they extorted from us returned, and I want a sincere apology for the emotional, financial, and physical agony they put me through,” she demanded.

     

    All efforts to get the reaction of the management of the hospital proved abortive as calls, texts and email messages were not replied to.

    The Federal Government will, on or before Friday, announce the result of the $500 million domestic dollar bond recently offered to the Nigerian public.

     

    A source close to the deal disclosed this to BusinessDay under anonymity, saying the government will put up an official statement on this.

     

    On August 19, 2024, the Federal Government announced the offering of a $500 million domestic US dollar bond with a maturity of five years and a fixed coupon of 9.75 percent per annum.

    What this means is that the investors are lending money in dollars to the Federal Government for five years with a promise to receive 9.75 percent in interest every year.

     

    The offer closed on August 30, 2024, and the result is expected on Friday. Most of the analysts polled by BusinessDay said they expected the offer to be oversubscribed.
