CBN officially Approves $20,000 for BDCs at N1,580 per Dollar

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced on Friday, September 6, that it has approved the allocation of $20,000 to each eligible Bureau De Change (BDC) operator. This move, aimed at improving dollar liquidity, comes at an exchange rate of N1,580 per dollar.

In a statement released by the Acting Director of the CBN’s Trade and Exchange Department, Williams Kanaya, the apex bank said the approval forms part of its efforts to inject more liquidity into the foreign exchange market, stabilizing the naira and addressing the demand for foreign currency.

“To this end, the CBN has approved the sale of 20,000 dollars to each eligible BDC operator at the rate of N1,580 per dollar,” Kanaya stated.

He emphasized that the funds are intended to meet the demand for invisible transactions such as travel allowances, medical bills, and tuition payments, which require foreign currency. Kanaya added that BDCs are allowed to sell to eligible end-users at a margin not exceeding 1% above the purchase rate from the CBN, ensuring regulated pricing for customers.

“Eligible BDCs interested in this transaction are directed to make the Naira payment to the CBN deposit account numbers provided to them,” he explained.

Kanaya further outlined the process for obtaining the approved funds, noting that after payment, confirmation and the necessary documentation should be submitted to specific branches of the CBN. These branches include Abuja, Awka, Kano, and Lagos, where the BDCs will be able to collect the allocated $20,000.

Hunter Biden Convicted of Tax Evasion, Faces Up to 17 Years in Prison

Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, has been convicted of tax evasion, facing a potential 17-year prison sentence following a court ruling on Thursday. The high-profile case marks a notable legal moment for the President’s son, who has been scrutinized for various financial issues.

On Thursday, Biden entered a guilty plea to three felony and six misdemeanor tax charges at a federal court in Los Angeles. According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice, Biden “willfully failed to file his 2017 and 2018 tax returns on time.”

The statement further revealed that when he eventually filed his 2018 returns, he included false business deductions to minimize his significant tax liability.

The DOJ’s statement also highlighted that while Biden faces a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison, actual sentences for federal crimes are generally less severe than the maximum allowed. A federal district court judge will determine the final sentence, considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory factors.

Judge Delays Trump’s Sentencing in Hush Money Case Until After Election

In a significant legal development, Justice Juan M. Merchan has postponed the sentencing of former U.S. President Donald Trump in his hush money case, pushing the date to November 26, three weeks after the presidential election. The delay comes as Trump continues to navigate the complexities of his criminal conviction while simultaneously campaigning to return to the White House.

Originally scheduled for September 18, Trump’s sentencing will now take place just before Thanksgiving, offering the Republican nominee a much-needed reprieve during the final stretch of his presidential run. Justice Merchan, who is also considering a defense request to overturn the conviction on immunity grounds, stated that the postponement was necessary to avoid any perception of political bias.

Read Also : CBN officially Approves $20,000 for BDCs at N1,580 per Dollar

In his four-page decision, Merchan explained that his intention was to ensure the court remained an impartial entity, free from any suggestion that the trial or sentencing might influence the outcome of the election. “The Court is a fair, impartial, and apolitical institution,” Merchan wrote, clarifying that the delay should dispel any notions of election interference.

The Trump legal team had actively sought the delay, arguing that proceeding with sentencing during the campaign would unjustly influence voters. They further contended that Trump should be given time to consider his legal options, especially after Merchan decides on their motion to vacate the conviction. Trump’s defense cited the U.S. Supreme Court’s July ruling on presidential immunity as a key factor in their argument for overturning the verdict.

Justice Merchan has set November 12 as the date to rule on the motion to dismiss the case based on the Supreme Court’s decision. This ruling will occur two weeks before the new sentencing date, adding another layer of uncertainty to Trump’s legal and political future.

By postponing the sentencing, the court ensures that the outcome of Trump’s trial will not influence voters’ decisions, allowing the election to proceed without the added factor of the former president’s potential imprisonment.

Nigeria’s security landscape has deteriorated significantly, with the rise of diverse violent groups exploiting the state’s weakened control. From July 2023 to June 2024 under President Bola Tinubu’s watch, the country witnessed an alarming surge in kidnapping incidents, driven by various actors including Boko Haram, armed gangs, and secessionist groups. Amid these threats, kidnap-for-ransom has emerged as a pervasive issue, affecting nearly every region of Nigeria.

    Escalating Kidnapping Statistics

Our research reveals that at least 7,568 people were abducted in 1,130 incidents across Nigeria during the review period. Kidnappers demanded approximately ₦11 billion (about $6.87 million) in ransom but received only ₦1.05 billion, indicating a significant drop in the amount collected. This suggests a shift in kidnapping tactics, with perpetrators becoming less specific in their victim targeting.

Road Crashes: 2,776 Deaths In Seven Months Unacceptable – SGF, Akume

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume says it is unacceptable for 2,776 people to be killed and 16,309 others injured in road traffic crashes between January and July this year.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of the FRSC Mobile App and National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS), Akume explained that between January and December last year, 5,081 people were killed, while 31,874 were injured in road mishaps.

According to him, appraising the app was intended to raise awareness and sensitise both drivers and passengers on the potential causative factors of road traffic crashes in the country.

He expressed optimism that the app would aid emergency reporting, detecting black spots, issuing eyewitness reports, detecting excess speed and alerting both drivers and passengers, saying that motorists could also use the app to verify when their license or vehicle papers expired, among other features and benefits.

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, stated that over the years, the FRSC has been active in formulating and implementing policies aimed at improving road safety administration in the country.

According to him, “the FRSC Mobile App is a software application that can be used on our phones to alert us on sensitive road safety issues through programmed features such as excessive speeding, dangerous driving and verifying our vehicle documents, among others.”

He further explained that the proper application of the features was expected to drastically reduce injuries and fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes.

He believed that in this era of technological advancement, FRSC cannot afford to lag behind, pointing out that it was in this light that the corps had decided to adapt and evolve its operations into the global network service system.

The Corps Marshal said that the NACRIS was designed to promote a multi-sectoral approach to crash reporting and data storage, stressing that phase two of the NACRIS project would focus on developing a digitalised crash data template based on inputs from phase 1.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman, House of Reps Committee on FRSC, Abiodun Adeshida, believed that with the new app and the ongoing efforts to amend the 2007 FRSC Act by the House Committee, the FRSC was advancing towards a 21st-century standard in technology, ensuring enhanced road safety measures.

  • Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today: Friday, September 6, 2024

Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today: Friday, September 6, 2024

The exchange rate between the US Dollar (USD) and the Nigerian Naira (NGN) has been a topic of significant interest and concern for many Nigerians. As of today, Friday, September 6, 2024, the exchange rate stands at ₦1,650 per $1 in the official market1. This rate reflects the ongoing economic challenges and currency fluctuations that Nigeria has been experiencing.

    Official Market Rates

In the official forex trading portal, the Naira closed at ₦1,650 per $11. This rate is crucial for businesses and individuals who engage in international trade and need to convert currencies through official channels.

    Parallel Market Rates

In the parallel market, commonly known as the black market, the exchange rate is slightly higher. As of today, the rate is ₦1,660 per $12. The parallel market often reflects the real demand and supply dynamics of foreign exchange in Nigeria, albeit at a premium.

    Factors Influencing the Exchange Rate

Several factors contribute to the current exchange rate dynamics:

    1. Oil Prices: As a major oil-exporting country, Nigeria’s economy is heavily influenced by global oil prices. Fluctuations in oil prices can significantly impact the Naira’s value.
    2. Inflation: High inflation rates in Nigeria reduce the purchasing power of the Naira, leading to a weaker currency.
    3. Foreign Reserves: The Central Bank of Nigeria’s foreign reserves play a critical role in stabilizing the Naira. Lower reserves can lead to a weaker currency.
    4. Economic Policies: Government policies, including those related to foreign exchange controls and monetary policy, directly affect the exchange rate.

    Implications for Nigerians

The current exchange rate has several implications for Nigerians:

    • Import Costs: Higher exchange rates increase the cost of imported goods, leading to higher prices for consumers.
    • Investment: A weaker Naira can deter foreign investment, as investors seek more stable currencies.
    • Remittances: For Nigerians receiving remittances from abroad, a higher exchange rate means more Naira for each dollar received, which can be beneficial.

The Dollar to Naira exchange rate is a critical economic indicator that affects various aspects of life in Nigeria. Staying informed about the latest rates and understanding the factors influencing them can help individuals and businesses make better financial decisions.

What are your thoughts on the current exchange rate situation? How does it impact you personally?

INEC Clarifies Timing of 2023 Presidential Results Declaration.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has addressed concerns regarding the announcement of the 2023 presidential election results, which was made at 2 AM on March 1, 2023. This timing drew criticisms from some Nigerians, who questioned the decision to release the results at such an early hour.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has now explained that the process of declaring the results was complex due to the nature of the election.

In Nigeria, the country is treated as a single constituency during presidential elections, requiring the collation of results from polling units through wards, local governments, states, and eventually, at the national level.

Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, further clarified that there is no specific time stated in the constitution or electoral act for declaring election results.

He emphasized that the collation process involves receiving and verifying results from all 36 returning officers across the country, which can be time-consuming.

Oyekanmi explained, “In a presidential election, the entire country is treated as one constituency. Results must be declared at various levels before being submitted to the Chief Electoral Commissioner in Abuja. This process takes time due to the extensive collation and the distance some returning officers must travel.”

He added that INEC Chairman Professor Yakubu ensured that all results were verified before announcing them, and that any discrepancies led to further scrutiny. This thorough process caused the delay, resulting in the announcement being made during the early hours.

Oyekanmi also pointed out that during the 2015 presidential election, results were announced around 4 AM, under former INEC Chairman Professor Attahiru Jega, indicating that late-night declarations have occurred in the past.

INEC reassured the public that the timing of the announcement was in line with the law and that the commission prioritizes accuracy and integrity in its processes.

Social Media is ‘Exclusively Meant for Men, Claims Nigerian Pharmacist Maketere Ugwu Amoke.

-social media platforms are “exclusively meant for men,” according to a recent, controversial statement on Facebook by Nigerian pharmacist Maketere Ugwu Amoke, claiming the negative exposure that women get online subjects them to.

Amoke said, “Social media is only for guys; women get destroyed with social media because exposure destroys women. Yea, it does,” he said on Thursday, September 5.

His statement has since set off an intense debate on social media, as users continued to express themselves about the matter. Some supported Amoke by citing how such pressures or visibility platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook provide may have negative implications for women with respect to body image, self-esteem, and self-comparison from a social perspective.

Others have attacked his position as being both sexist and dismissive of the toll living in this digital age takes, one that equally affects men and women. They further believe that social media, while flawed, is not an enemy to women but has opened up opportunities in ways of empowerment, connection, and personal growth.

Amoke’s comment borders on broader discussions that have to do with social media and their effects on mental health and societal roles, especially in a world where gender equality and freedom of expression top the agendas of most discussions.

Despite the backlash, the pharmacist has yet to clarify or retract his comments, leaving many to wonder if he indeed stands by his controversial claim.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control said it has destroyed fake, adulterated and unregistered food, drug and cosmetic products worth about N2.7 billion seized in the South-East.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this in a brief remark during the exercise in Enugu, noting that such products would have compromised the health of over three million people.

Represented by a Director of the South-East Zone, Mr Martins Iluyomade, the DG said the products would have increased the health burden on the already overstretched health institutions in the country.

According to her, the products would have increased the poverty rate by making people spend money they should use to improve their livelihoods on medical trips.

Adeyeye said many had died untimely due to consumption of poisons, stressing that the event was to give a hint to the people of the South-East that it was no longer business as usual to merchants of death who are hell-bent on destroying other people for their selfish economic gain.

I will like to appreciate other sister agencies for their cooperation, without which we cannot succeed in this endeavour.

The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education has thrown its support behind the Federal Government’s decision to set the minimum age for Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) and UTME candidates at 18 years, starting from 2025.

This decision, announced in July by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, aims to ensure students are mature enough before entering tertiary institutions.

The policy has sparked widespread debate, with some parents expressing concerns that it could slow the academic progress of younger students who excel. However, supporters argue that the policy will better prepare students for the academic and social responsibilities of higher education.

Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education, Mark Useni, explained that the decision aligns with the Universal Basic Education Act and international standards. He also noted that the policy would prevent very young students, sometimes as young as 12, from seeking admission into universities.

Pat Utomi Reveals Those Behind Nigeria’s Misery, Calls for Fuel Subsidy Return

Renowned political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, has attributed the hardships faced by Nigerians to the failures of the political class. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Utomi emphasized that the current economic struggles are a direct result of poor leadership and decision-making by the country’s politicians.

Utomi criticized the political elite for repeatedly making poor choices, particularly pointing to the National Assembly, which he described as emblematic of the nation’s leadership problems. He urged the political class to publicly acknowledge their role in Nigeria’s woes.

On the issue of fuel subsidies, Utomi advocated for the reintroduction of a targeted subsidy regime. He argued that essential sectors, like fuel for public use, should be subsidized, drawing parallels to agricultural subsidies in the United States.

Tinubu-Led Government Assures End to Nationwide Fuel Scarcity by Weekend.

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the ongoing fuel scarcity will be resolved by the weekend, following concerns about the widespread hardship caused by the situation. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, made the announcement on September 5 after a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima and Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Lokpobiri stated that President Bola Tinubu is deeply concerned about the difficulties being faced by the public due to the fuel scarcity. He emphasized that the government is not fixing fuel prices, but expects prices to stabilize once product availability increases.

“We believe that between now and the weekend, there will be availability of products across the country,” Lokpobiri said. “The prices may vary across regions, but once there is enough supply, the price will stabilize.”

The minister urged Nigerians to avoid panic buying, reassuring them that there is sufficient petrol in the country to meet demand. He reiterated that the fuel sector is fully deregulated, and prices are expected to adjust naturally as supply improves.

The scarcity and subsequent price hikes have significantly affected transport fares, with prices soaring by over 50% in several major cities. The NNPCL recently increased petrol prices to between N855 and N897 per litre, depending on the region, from the previous N568-N617 per litre.

The government’s intervention is expected to bring relief to Nigerians as the weekend approaches, alleviating the transportation and cost-of-living challenges posed by the fuel shortage.

FG Launches Sale of 50kg Rice to Nigerians at ₦40,000

In an effort to combat rising food prices and alleviate hunger, the Federal Government has launched the sale of 50kg bags of rice to Nigerians at a subsidized price of ₦40,000.

The initiative was officially rolled out by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, in Abuja on Thursday, as part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensure no Nigerian goes to bed hungry.

During the launch, Kyari stated that the government has made available 30,000 metric tonnes of rice to be distributed nationwide at the reduced rate. He highlighted the timeliness of the intervention, given the prevailing economic challenges, noting that this measure is aimed at easing the burden on citizens.

    “A Timely Intervention”

“This food intervention can be said to be timely considering the times and challenges we are in as citizens of this great nation,” Kyari said. “This kind gesture was made possible at the directives of President Bola Tinubu, who does not want Nigerians to go to bed hungry; and in his wisdom, deemed it important to initiate this food intervention.”

The Minister emphasized that the sale of the rice would be carefully monitored to prevent hoarding or exploitation by middlemen. Verification will be done through the National Identification Number (NIN) and phone numbers to ensure transparency and that no individual purchases more than one bag.

    Crashing the Price of Rice

The distribution of the rice is expected to have a significant impact on the market price of rice, with Kyari expressing optimism that the injection of 30,000 metric tonnes of rice will help lower prices across the country.

“It is expected that with the injection of 30,000MT (1000 trucks of 30MT each) of this important staple into Nigeria’s food balance sheet, it will not only crash the price of rice but also affect the prices of other closer food substitutes and alternatives,” he explained.

    How to Buy

Explaining the process, Dr. Haruna Sule, Director of Strategic Grains Reserve at the Ministry of Agriculture, stated that civil servants can access the rice from designated points of sale using their Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) details. Payment will be made electronically, and each buyer will receive a treasury receipt with a unique code that will be presented at collection points.

Sule added that the points of sale and collection will be set up separately to avoid stampedes. “Once the payment is confirmed, a receipt with a code will be issued. The buyer will then proceed to the designated collection point to present the code and collect the rice,” he explained.

In Abuja, five to six sales points will be established across the Federal Capital Territory, with similar setups planned for other states.

A Response to Soaring Food Prices

This initiative comes as Nigerians face increasing food insecurity due to inflation, which has significantly affected the cost of staple food items. With the subsidized rice sale, the Federal Government aims to provide some relief to citizens, particularly those struggling with the high cost of living. The duration of the sale will depend on how quickly the rice stock is sold.

The government’s move has been met with mixed reactions, with some praising the effort, while others call for more sustainable long-term solutions to the nation’s food crisis.
