TUC Breaks Silence as Tinubu Hikes Fuel Price to Over ₦850 per Liter
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has expressed shock and dismay over the recent hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, demanding its immediate reversal by the Federal Government.
The TUC, in a statement issued by its President, Festus Osifo, contended that the abrupt increase in fuel and electricity costs will exacerbate the already high levels of poverty and suffering across the country, potentially leading to social unrest.

“TUC received the news of the PMS price hike with great contestation and grave concern,” the statement began. It further noted that the burden of the price increase “percolates all facets of our socio-economic life,” emphasizing that the decision to implement the hike without consulting critical stakeholders reflects a blatant disregard for the welfare of the Nigerian people, particularly the working class who are most affected by such policies.
The union highlighted that the news of the fuel price increase has caused widespread apprehension and depression throughout the nation, especially as it comes on the heels of unprecedented hardships already facing citizens. In addition to the fuel hike, the TUC expressed deep concern over the recent 250 percent increase in electricity tariffs, which they argue will disproportionately impact the poorest in society.
The statement criticized the timing and magnitude of these increases, especially in the absence of meaningful social security measures. The TUC argued that these actions demonstrate a lack of empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.
“Why does it have to be the common Nigerians bearing all the pains of high cost of living while those in power enjoy increased allocation and affluence?” the Congress questioned, adding that the government has made no significant efforts to reduce the cost of governance or improve the standard of living for citizens.

The TUC also reiterated its longstanding position that strengthening the naira is crucial to resolving the country’s economic challenges. Despite presenting several strategies to achieve this, the Congress noted with disappointment that little has been done to implement their recommendations.
The union’s strong stance against the fuel price hike reflects the growing discontent among Nigerian workers and the broader public as they continue to grapple with the rising cost of living.
The TUC’s call for immediate action underscores the urgent need for the government to address these concerns to prevent further exacerbation of the nation’s economic woes.
