Prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has criticized members of the Abia State House of Assembly who recently defected to the Labour Party, urging that they should be prepared to forfeit their seats.

The defectors, Mr. Iheanacho Nwogu and Mr. Fine Ahuama, who represented Osisioma North and Osisioma South State Constituencies respectively, were formerly members of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).
Yesufu’s comments came in response to the news that these lawmakers switched allegiance to the Labour Party. Governor Alex Otti formally welcomed them into the state’s ruling party.

The defections were reported on Tuesday, prompting Yesufu’s immediate reaction.
The lawmakers’ defection took place in Abia State, a key region in southeastern Nigeria.
Yesufu expressed her frustration on her official X handle, arguing that legislators who switch parties should be required to relinquish their seats. She emphasized, “This nonsense where people are voted on a party ticket and then decamp to join the ruling party needs to be punished by the law. You should have the right to decamp, but you must forfeit the seat you won on another platform.”
Yesufu’s stance highlights ongoing concerns about political loyalty and accountability within Nigeria’s legislative processes, reflecting broader debates about the integrity of elected officials and party politics in the country.
