Rishi Sunak Biography

Early Life

Sunak was born into a family with roots in multiple countries of origin. His parents and grandparents were born in Tanzania and Kenya, which are both located in East Africa. His grandparents were originally from Punjab, which is located in the far northwest of India.

After moving their family to Southampton in southern England in the 1960s, they eventually met one another and got married.

The senior Sunak went to medical school and eventually worked for the National Health Service as a family physician.

As the eldest of his parents’ three children, Sunak would eventually be responsible for keeping the books for the tiny pharmacy that his mother, who was also a pharmacist, owned and maintained.

Later on in his political career, Sunak would draw parallels between his experiences working in the family business and the values he gained from them and those of Margaret Thatcher, an icon of the Conservative Party who was the daughter of a grocer. Sunak was the son of a grocery store owner.

He attended Winchester College, Lincoln College, Oxford University, and Stanford University, and he graduated from all four of those institutions. While he was on vacation over the summer, Sunak worked as a waiter at a curry restaurant in Southampton.

In 2014, the Conservative Party selected him to run for the seat of Richmond (Yorks), which had been occupied by William Hague in the years before to that election.

In the general election that took place in 2017, he won re-election to his position as a Member of Parliament from the same seat.

Between the months of January 2018 and July 2019, he held the position of Parliamentary Under-Secretary.

He voted for Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the election for the leadership of the Conservative Party in 2019, and he even collaborated on an essay that was published in a national British newspaper in June 2019 to advocate for Johnson during the election campaign.

Sunak was re-elected in the General Election in 2019, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed him Chief Secretary to the Treasury in July 2019.

He previously worked under Chancellor Sajid Javid. On July 25, 2019, he was invited to join the Privy Council as a member.

In February of 2020, there was a reorganisation of the cabinet, and Sunak was given the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer.
