Islamic jihadist attacked a church in Nigeria, killing a pastor and his wife after setting the worship centre on fire, according to local residents and community leaders.

 

Ejes Gist News reports that the attackers stormed the church during a service, opened fire to disperse worshippers and then ignited the building. Witnesses alleged that the pastor and his wife were trapped inside as flames engulfed the structure, preventing their escape.

Residents said the assailants remained at the scene until the fire consumed large parts of the church, ensuring that no immediate rescue could take place.

Viral Photo Shows Burned Structure

A viral photograph obtained by this newspaper shows extensive destruction inside the church. The roof appears partially collapsed, walls are cracked and blackened by smoke, and rubble is scattered across the floor. Windows are shattered, and the structure bears clear signs of deliberate arson.

Community members described the killings as targeted. They alleged that the attackers had issued threats prior to the incident, although authorities have not publicly confirmed these claims.

Security and Official Response

Security agencies confirmed an attack on the community but did not immediately release the identities of the victims pending notification of extended family members.

Nigeria has faced persistent attacks from extremist factions, including elements linked to Boko Haram and other armed groups operating across parts of the country. Security analysts note that assaults on religious institutions remain a recurring feature of insurgent violence.
