    The Nigerian Correctional Service which was formerly known as the Nigerian Prison Service until August 2019 is a Nigerian government agency that operates the correctional (prison) facilities across the country.

    Charged with the responsibility of taking charge of those legally detained, identifying their behavior causes, and retraining them, the National Prison Service is fully empowered by the 1972 Decree No.9 as amended in 2004 CAP P29 laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in the 2019 Nigerian Correctional Services Act.

    The Nigerian Prison Service has its headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and is headed by the Controller-General of Prison Service, Ja’afaru Ahmed. He was installed as the head in 2016 by the President, Muhammadu Buhari and is directly responsible to the Minister of Interior and the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration, and Prison Services Board.

    The Nigerian Prison Service which came to reality in 1968 after the abolishment of the former Native Authority Prisons can, today, boast of about 240 prisons among which are 138 main prisons (for convicts), 85 satellite facilities, 14 farm centers, and 3 Borstal Institutions.

    Most importantly, the Nigerian Prison Service (Nigerian Correctional Service) has just one vision which is to establish a credible prison service.

    Ebeneezer, a medical doctor and a herbal practitioner at the Amuzu Hospital has instructed men to have s£x at least 21 times a month to avoid prostate cancer.

    In a twitter video that has since gone viral online, the Doctor was seen advising men to have s£x at least 21 times a month in order to check against prostate cancer.

    She said her advise is as a result of research findings conducted at Harvard University which was published in a journal called the European Urology.

    The research found that men who have frequent s£x, do not have the chance to suffer prostate cancer hence others should follow in the same act, she added.

    Federal Ministry of Water Resources – The Niger Basin Authority NB-ITTAS Project is an important opportunity for a sustainable use of natural resources, water, land, forests in the Niger Basin. NB-ITTAS (Niger Basin – Iullemeden -Taoudeni/Tanezrouft Aquifer System) which engages four implementation partners that are the NBA (for Components 2, 3 and 4), OSS (Components 1 , 2 and 4), UNIDO (Component 3) and UNESCO (Component 4), is the expression of the implementation of the NBA Sustainable Development Action Plan of the Niger River Basin, and the development of the Trans-boundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) and Strategic Action Plan (SAP) of the Iullemeden-Taoudeni/Tanezrouft Aquifer System (SATT or ITTAS in English Iullemeden-Taoudeni/Tanezrouft Aquifer System).

    The project covers the following aspects:

    • The negative effects of climate change which put pressure on human health, food security and general livelihood and/or resilience.
    • Degradation of land, other natural resources and change in the way these resources are used.
    • Changes in the hydrological regime: result of a combination of climate variability and changes.

    RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

    • Support the participatory processes of identifying, planning and implementing geographical and cartographic data collection activities and the development of thematic maps;
    • Identify, acquire and continuously enrich the database with external spatial data relevant to management and conservation activities, REDD + pollution reduction;

    RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
    The specific objectives of the position are as follows:

    • Guide the process of establishing the baseline situation (baseline study), refine the project performance monitoring indicators and verify the quality of the environmental and socio-economic data available on the project area, the methods used for collecting them and their degree of reliability to constitute good basic statistics;
    • Lead the deployment and timely completion of the MEAL/ICT4D computerized digital system to support the implementation of project activities;

    • Quality control and verification of technical files (ToR, execution of contracts, studies and technical reports);

    • Taking into account of the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) of the project as part of the IWRM
    ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS 
    • At least BAC+5 degree in water resources engineering, hydrology or equivalent field.
    • Proven knowledge in Integrated Management of trans-boundary Water Resources, including hydro-systems;
    • A minimum of seven (7) years of appropriate professional experience in water resources management, including at least five (5) years in trans-boundary water management;
    • A minimum of five (5) years of appropriate/relevant professional experience in the operationalization of IWRM;
    • Proven experience in the conduct and management of development projects.

    PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

    • Ability to work with various government departments, companies, other projects, NGOs, associations and producer groups and cooperatives;
    • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and work in a team;
    • Master forecasting models as well as computer tools for water resources management;
    • Good knowledge of IT tools (especially Word, Excel, MS Project, Access, etc.);
    • Ability to communicate, lead meetings, organize schedules and respect them, rigorous, dynamic, active, ability to anticipate;
    • Excellent problem solving skills;
    • Excellent command of the French and/or English language and be functional in the other.
    • Adaptability: Knowing how to demonstrate flexibility, versatility and/or tolerance in a work environment while carrying out tasks effectively and efficiently.

    Biography of Abba Kyari: A Political Journey

     

    Abba Kyari OON, a Kanuri man hailing from Borno, left an indelible mark on Nigerian politics, notably serving as the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari from August 27, 2015, until his passing on April 17, 2020.

    His academic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Warwick in 1980, followed by a Bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Cambridge. His legal journey culminated with a call to the Nigerian Bar in 1983 after completing studies at the Nigerian Law School.

    In 1984, Kyari furthered his legal education with a master’s degree in law from the University of Cambridge. He expanded his knowledge by attending the International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1992 and the Program for Management Development at the Harvard Business School in 1994.

    Kyari commenced his professional career at the law firm of Fani-Kayode and Sowemimo. In 1988, he transitioned to become the Editor of the New Africa Holdings Limited in Kaduna.

    In 1990, he took on the role of Commissioner for Forestry and Animal Resources in Borno State. Between 1990 and 1995, he served as the secretary to the board of African International Bank Limited, a subsidiary of Bank of Credit and Commerce International. His banking career flourished as he became the executive director (management services) at the United Bank for Africa and later ascended to the position of chief executive officer.

    Kyari’s influence extended to corporate boards, including appointments as a director of Unilever Nigeria in 2002 and participation on the board of Exxon Mobil Nigeria.

    In August 2015, he assumed the pivotal position of Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, wielding significant influence behind the scenes. His role evolved, and between 2017 and 2019, he appeared to function as a coordinating head within the President’s inner circle.

    Controversies arose, notably when he acted as an intermediary between the National Assembly and the President during the latter’s medical absence. Additionally, his involvement in the handling of bills and his influence over matters of national security sparked public concerns.

    In 2020, Kyari’s engagement in negotiations for national infrastructure development, particularly in the power sector, further showcased his multifaceted role.

    Tragically, his national service was cut short when he tested positive for COVID-19 in March 2020, ultimately succumbing to the illness on April 17, 2020, in a Lagos hospital.

    Abba Kyari, survived by his wife and four children, left behind a legacy that mirrored both the complexities and impact of his political journey. May his soul rest in peace.
