What are the Nigerian newspapers’ headlines for today?
1) On Wednesday, Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State, issued a warning that bandits might exploit the country’s transitional period to carry out bloody attacks. In light of this, he suggested that security operations against bandits be stepped up during the remaining months of the current administration and beyond.
2) The presidency has opened up on steps it took to bring sanity to Benue in light of recent attacks, claiming that despite the fact that governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, who “in many cases” either “roundly ignored them or placed an outright obstruction,”.This was stated in a statement on Wednesday by Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President for Media and Publicity.
3) The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, have been accused of losing over $2.4 billion in revenue in 2015 by selling 48 million barrels of crude oil illegally, and the House of Representatives adhoc committee looking into the allegations has expressed disappointment.
4) The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Comptroller General, Isah Jere, has been asked by the Federal Government to retire. The Federal Government instructed the head of NIS to hand over to the most senior officer in the Service in a letter from the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, dated April 17, 2023, and addressed to him.
5) The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Ahmadu Fintiri who was declared the winner of the Adamawa State supplementary governorship election, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect, has urged the police to look into the controversies surrounding the election. Former governor of Lagos State Tinubu urged disgruntled candidates who lost the election to use legal channels to air their grievances.
6) On Wednesday, the striking aviation unions staged a procession to the international terminal of the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA), where they vowed to shut down the airports completely after seven days. On Monday, the first day of their two-day warning strike, when the access roads were blocked, security personnel also occupied the protest site where the unions had gathered.
7) In honour of this year’s Eid al-Fitr celebration, the Federal Government has proclaimed Friday, April 21, and Monday, April 24, as public holidays. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the Minister, made the declaration on behalf of the government, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior and signed by Permanent Secretary Shuiab Belgore.
8) On Wednesday, a perimeter fence surrounding a construction site in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja collapsed, killing two construction workers. In the Wuse 2 neighbourhood of the nation’s capital, the incident took place on Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent.
9) Gbenga Ogunfadeke, 45, has been detained after allegations that he chained his two kids and kept them in solitary confinement until they died. The suspect’s arrest was confirmed by the Amotekun Corps State Commander, David Akinremi, in a statement on Wednesday.
10) According to the Imo State Police Command, during a bloody shootout, its agents wounded several members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and its militia branch, Eastern Security Network (ESN). A shooting occurred at a camp in the Oguta Local Area’s Ubah Agwa/Izombe Tropical Rain Forest, injuring several people.
