Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger Will Not Return to ECOWAS – Military Leader
Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso junta chiefs ‘turn their backs’ on West Africa bloc Ecowas.
General Abdourahamane Tiani, the military leader of Niger Republic, declared that his nation will not rejoin the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Tiani pointed out that neighboring countries Mali and Burkina Faso have also definitively distanced themselves from the West African bloc, ECOWAS.

He made this statement during the opening of a summit in Niamey, attended by representatives from the three Sahelian nations that left ECOWAS earlier this year.
“Our people have irrevocably turned their backs on ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States),” Tiani stated.
Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, has voiced his concerns about the regional bloc’s unsuccessful attempts to reintegrate Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

He mentioned that they have eased sanctions and invited their governments to technical meetings.
Despite these efforts, the appropriate responses have not been received. “We have not received the right signals from these Member States,” Touray noted.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 92nd Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers in Abuja, Touray noted that ECOWAS has not yet established a negotiation framework with the authorities in the three Sahelian countries regarding their decision to withdraw from the Community.
Recall on January 28, the military juntas in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger announced their exit from ECOWAS.
