Live Updates: Nigerians Storm Streets In Massive Nationwide Hunger Protest (Day 6).

The nationwide protest against bad governance and hunger continued today across the country.

Nationwide Protests Against Hunger, Hardship, Bad Governance Continue
The nationwide protests against hunger, hardship, and bad governance show no signs of slowing down as protests held today, Monday, to mark the sixth day of countrywide protests.

Protesters have defied the federal government and its officials who have called on them to shelve the protests, with security agents accused of opening fire and arresting peaceful protesters.

The protests running for the second day are a pointer to the frustrations and disappointment of Nigerians over the state of the nation. Citizens are demanding immediate action over surging prices of vital commodities, joblessness, and ineffective governance.

Crowds have mobilized across major towns in the country, chanting slogans and mounting placards, demanding better living conditions and government accountability. This spells out a resilient determination on the protesters’ vow that protests will only stop when demands are met.

Government Reaction and Security Concerns.

The Federal Government has maintained its plea for calm and patience, urging protesters to rather give dialogue a chance as one sure avenue of redress for the issues at hand. This has invariably fallen on deaf ears, as many Nigerians believed past inchoate promises at reform and improvement remained unexecuted.

Reports from different cities have confirmed security forces resorted to aggressive means of crowd dispersion. Some police and military officials have turned to the use of tear gas, water cannons, and in some instances, live ammunition against peaceful protesters, according to various eyewitnesses, videos sent to this network, and across social media. Human rights groups have largely condemned such actions and called for an investigation into the use of excessive force.

As the protests persist, there is growing clamor for national unity among Nigerians to find lasting solutions to challenges besetting the nation. Groups active in civil society, religious leaders, and influential persons have been championing peaceful protests while urging the government to listen to people’s grievances.

In a statement, a coalition representing civil society expressed the imperative necessity that the government must take immediate intervention and respond to the deeper issues that made protests erupt. It wanted concrete actions for reducing inflation, creating opportunities for jobs, improving governance, and enhancing transparency.
