After mentioning the ordeal of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and the arrest of controversial singer Portable in its exam questions, the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ilorin received a lot of feedback online.
The lecturer asked students to discuss the aforementioned cases in a question paper given to them by the Department of Criminology and Security Studies. The inquiries covered a range of incident-related topics.

Students were required to evaluate the victim whose organ was almost harvested and to list the characteristics of the UK police that helped in the capture and prosecution of Ekweremadu, his wife, and the involved doctor in one of the exam questions.
Additionally, the lecturer used Portable’s arrest for assaulting a fellow musician as a case study and instructed the class to use four types of profiling to discuss how to gather personal information and the connection between the offender’s job and his actions.
Different social media users’ reactions to the inclusion of these real-life examples in the exam questions were conflicting.

Many users expressed the opinion that succeeding in such exams required staying up to date on current events, actively engaging with news, and being present online. Some users viewed the inquiries as a chance for students to put their knowledge to use on current, relatable problems.
Others found the method appealing because it allowed students to offer their perspectives and interpretations of the incidents as opposed to the more common practise of rote memorization.
However, a few people commented on the uniqueness of the questions and how they deviated from traditional exam formats, expressing surprise and amusement at the lecturer’s choice of subject matter.

The online debates over the exam questions brought to light the connection between the classroom and current affairs as well as the significance of keeping up with current affairs. The responses served as a reminder of how education is constantly changing and how important it is for students to engage in current events and practise critical thinking in order to succeed in their academic endeavours.
How the students respond to the exam questions and how the professors grade their responses are still up in the air. At the time of this report, the University of Ilorin had not yet made an official statement regarding the online responses to the test questions.
The incident, which continues to be discussed, serves as a reflection of the changing teaching strategies and the inclusion of real-world examples in academic assessments, encouraging students to apply their knowledge to real-world circumstances.
