Nigerians are voicing frustration over a staggering 70% hike in cooking gas prices, which has forced many to abandon cleaner energy sources for alternatives like charcoal and firewood.

The sharp increase has also hit small businesses, struggling to absorb the rising costs.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the price of a 12.5kg refill rose by 69.15%, from ₦9,194 in July to ₦15,552.56 in August.

“I’m shocked and disappointed,” Abiodun Adeleke, a user on X (formerly Twitter), expressed. “Just months ago, the price was ₦9,000. Now it’s ₦19,000 — that’s a 100% increase in under a year!”
Many Nigerians are now considering switching to cheaper alternatives like charcoal.
Caterers and food vendors, who heavily rely on cooking gas, have also been severely affected by the price surge.
Despite the removal of VAT on gas in October last year, prices continue to climb. Olatubosun Oladapo, president of the Nigerian Association of Liquified Petroleum Gas Marketers, attributes the increase to several factors, including rising global prices, vessel costs, forex scarcity, and naira devaluation.
