BREAKING: Court Sacks All NNPP Candidates Ahead of Kano LG Elections, Bars Security Agencies
Kano Court Disqualifies NNPP Candidates for Local Government Elections, Orders New Candidate List.
A Federal High Court in Kano has disqualified all 44 New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) chairmanship and councillorship candidates ahead of the state’s local government elections.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Simon Amobeda, stems from a legal dispute within the NNPP regarding the party’s candidate list.
Despite the court’s decision, the elections are set to proceed on Saturday, with the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) facing a directive to use a newly submitted list of candidates.
Justice Amobeda’s judgement followed a case brought by Engineer Muhammad Babayo and a faction of the NNPP against the party’s leadership, contending that the previous list was unauthorised.
In his ruling, Justice Amobeda ordered KANSIEC to accept a fresh list of candidates provided by the recognised State Chairman, Dalhatu Shehu Usman. Furthermore, the court instructed security agencies, including the police and Department of State Services (DSS), to withhold security support if the election proceeds without using the updated list.
“The defendant is hereby restrained from releasing the voters’ register for the 2nd Defendant to conduct the proposed election on 26th October 2024,” stated Justice Amobeda, directing that only candidates submitted by the recognised chairman, Dalhatu Shehu Usman, should be accepted.
The case, filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), KANSIEC, the Inspector General of Police, and the DSS, highlights ongoing tensions within the NNPP over candidate representation. The court’s decision raises questions about the legitimacy of the upcoming local government elections in Kano, with security measures and candidate listings still under debate.
