‘We Won’t Vote for Tinubu, APC in 2027’ – PDP Rebukes Wike
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Taminu Turaki has declared that it will not support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, rejecting moves by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to mobilise political support for the president.
The faction made its position known in a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Emememobong, in response to reports that Wike was prepared to consolidate his political structure behind Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group maintained that the minister’s declaration was not directed at genuine PDP members, alleging that his political approach reflected the position of individuals who claim membership of the opposition party while supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
PDP Faction Rejects Wike’s Political Alignment
The Turaki-led faction insisted that the PDP would not participate in any arrangement aimed at securing Tinubu’s return to office, describing support for the APC-led Federal Government as contrary to the responsibility of an opposition party.
According to the statement, genuine PDP members would not join what it characterised as self-serving political support for the ruling party and its policies.
“The PDP will never support the re-election of President Tinubu,” the statement declared.
The faction argued that the primary responsibility of an opposition party was to provide Nigerians with an alternative to the government in power rather than endorse its leadership.
It added that any political alliance involving opposition parties should be directed towards cooperation among themselves instead of supporting the incumbent administration.
The statement represents a clear rejection of Wike’s reported political position as the disagreement over the PDP’s leadership and future direction continues.
‘Rainbow Coalition’ Raises Concerns Over Opposition Politics
The faction also criticised the political arrangement popularly described as the Rainbow Coalition, portraying it as a threat to Nigeria’s electoral democracy.
It alleged that the coalition could weaken the opposition by bringing political actors together in support of the ruling party rather than allowing competing parties to challenge the government through elections.
“This political anomaly, styled and championed as a ‘rainbow coalition,’ is the greatest threat to electoral democracy and the fastest way of railroading the nation into an electoral monarchy,” the statement said.
The faction warned Nigerians against political arrangements it believes could undermine effective opposition and reduce the choices available to voters during the 2027 elections.
It further cautioned against what it described as elite accommodation and state capture being presented as broad-based political collaboration.
However, the statement reflects the faction’s political assessment of the coalition, rather than an established finding that the arrangement threatens Nigeria’s electoral system.
Faction Appeals to PDP Members to Remain Loyal
Amid the disagreement, the Turaki-led group urged members who identify with its position to remain committed to the PDP while awaiting the outcome of its legal battle over the party’s leadership.
The faction expressed confidence that the judiciary would resolve the dispute and restore the party to what it described as its rightful owners.
“Our case at the Court of Appeal has been heard, and we await judgement,” the statement said.
It also called for a timely judicial decision, arguing that prolonged uncertainty could further complicate the party’s internal affairs.
The leadership dispute has become a significant issue for the PDP as political actors position themselves ahead of the next general election. The eventual court decision could have implications for the party’s leadership structure, internal cohesion and ability to present a united front in 2027.
Until the legal questions are resolved, competing positions within the party may continue to shape its political relationships and public messaging.
2027 Elections Likely to Intensify Political Rivalries
The faction urged Nigerians to use the 2027 general elections to reject political actors it accused of being insensitive and irresponsible.
It described the forthcoming election as an opportunity for voters to hold political leaders accountable for their decisions and policies.
The declaration also highlights the divisions surrounding the PDP’s relationship with the Tinubu administration, particularly over whether opposition figures should cooperate with the ruling party or maintain a clear political distance from it.
Wike’s reported plan to mobilise support for Tinubu contrasts sharply with the Turaki-led faction’s insistence that the PDP must not assist the president’s re-election bid.
The disagreement could further expose the challenges facing the PDP as it attempts to resolve its internal leadership crisis and establish a common position ahead of the elections.
For now, the faction has made its position clear: it will not support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 and expects genuine PDP members to remain committed to the opposition.
The next major development may depend on the outcome of the party’s ongoing court case and how the wider PDP responds to competing political interests ahead of the 2027 polls.
