53-Year-Old Woman Jailed for Dumping Refuse in Lagos Drain During Rain

LAGOS, Nigeria — A 53-year-old woman identified as Nelly Monday has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse into a public drainage channel during heavy rainfall in Lagos State.

The convict was apprehended on Wednesday in the Meiran area of the state after enforcement officers caught her discharging waste directly into a drain while it was raining.

She was subsequently arraigned before a court at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to environmental pollution and illegal waste disposal.

LAWMA Confirms Conviction

Confirming the development, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) stated that the conviction serves as a deterrent to residents who continue to violate state environmental laws.

The agency emphasized that indiscriminate garbage dumping—particularly into drainage channels—remains one of the primary drivers of severe artificial flooding in the state.

Waste deposited in gutters blocks the free flow of storm water, leading to road submergence, property damage, and public health hazards during heavy rains.

Crackdown on Environmental Offenders

LAWMA reiterated its resolve to hunt down individuals who breach environmental regulations, noting that enforcement operations have been intensified across all local government areas.

The authority stated that it will continue collaborating with security agencies and specialized task forces to apprehend and prosecute offenders across the metropolis.

LAWMA urged all Lagos residents to cultivate responsible waste management habits by utilizing only designated waste collection points and approved Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators to keep the environment clean and prevent avoidable flood disasters.
