In a significant shift on the African billionaire landscape, South African magnate Johan Rupert has overtaken Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote to become the continent’s richest man.

Rupert, the chairman of luxury goods conglomerate Richemont, now leads the wealth rankings, according to the latest data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

This development follows a sharp decline in Dangote’s net worth, which has dropped by more than $1 billion. Rupert’s current net worth is estimated at $14.3 billion, surpassing Dangote’s $13.4 billion.

Rupert’s fortune has seen a year-to-date increase of $1.87 billion, largely driven by the strong performance of his luxury brands.

On the other hand, Dangote, who owns the Dangote Group, has suffered a substantial financial setback. His net worth has decreased by approximately $1.69 billion so far this year, with his business empire struggling under the weight of Nigeria’s challenging macroeconomic conditions.

This change marks a pivotal moment in the ranking of Africa’s wealthiest individuals, with Johan Rupert now at the forefront, reflecting both the volatility of global markets and the economic difficulties facing Nigeria.
