In what has been considered a shocking turn, Punch Newspaper has pulled down a news report it had earlier done, saying the APC national leader, Bola Tinubu, called for a revolution in Nigeria. The move received monumental debate across the nation.

The deleted story quoted Tinubu as calling for a “common sense” revolution to deal with the various challenges the nation faces. Tinubu was also reportedly critical of the successive presidents under the umbrella of the PDP, arguing that the deepening crisis in the country was due to the too-long period of misrule of the country by the party’s leadership.

According to the former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, “What the country needs now is to go through a ‘common sense’ revolution.” “The longer they rule, the less benefit the people derive. Nigeria now needs a ‘common sense revolution’, a revolution that calls forth a return to decency, probity, transparency of process and fairness in outcome.”

Tinubu, in his message, implored Nigerians to make their minds ready for change, saying urgency for change must be paramount. “We must rescue Nigeria from those set to cause her irreparable harm. The change I talk about is the only route to our deliverance from 16 years of PDP locusts. Nigeria is ours to keep and its democracy is ours to save,” he added.

The sudden removal of that story has pointed to many questions. Some of those questions, in turn, are what believers and critics are guessing over the reason for the newspaper’s pulling down. It has boosted the debate on the alleged call by Tinubu for a revolution in the context of his present administration.

Since Tinubu assumed office, Nigeria has confronted the sharpest economic hardships. The country is hit hard by an out-of-control economic crisis characterized by totally out-of-control inflation, rampant unemployment rates, and a heavy devaluation of the national currency. These have brought forth a massive amount of hunger, rendering quite a number of average family budgets unaffordable.

Due to these economic challenges, many companies have opted to leave the country, thereby compounding the situation further. This foray into economic instability has frustrated most Nigerians and is putting them in a dilemma on the effectiveness of Tinubu’s leadership.

The article’s deletion by Punch newspapers did much to further the tempo of reactions online, as hundreds of Nigerians reacted across various social media. Some lambasted the newspaper for its deletion, considered quite a very critical piece of information, while many others queried what Tinubu’s past statements read for his present administration.

It is a huge disgrace that journalists in Nigeria cannot even speak, to the point @MobilePunch is deleting articles made by them just to please a Criminal drug baron.

This is why the system can wake up in the morning and indiscriminately arrest journalists because you people have no balls to even do investigations and stand by it.

How many journalists and investigators can we boast of in Nigeria today?

How many journalists have been indiscriminately arrested in Nigeria this year alone?

It is a shame that journalism in Nigeria is as good as dead and @MobilePunch is just showing the World once again that they are a tool.
