Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is facing mounting political pressure ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as a proposed alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso gains traction within the opposition bloc.

The emerging coalition, driven by the Obidient and Kwankwassiyya movements, is reportedly coalescing under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), setting the stage for a potentially competitive primary contest. Ejes Gist News reports that internal negotiations and strategic alignments are intensifying as stakeholders weigh options ahead of the party’s nomination process.

Political sources indicate that while Atiku’s camp, including allies such as Dele Momodu, is advocating for a joint Atiku–Obi ticket, a growing faction within the party is pushing for a generational shift, backing an Obi–Kwankwaso combination.

Calls Mount for Atiku to Step Aside

Pressure on Atiku to withdraw from the race has reportedly come from both northern and southern stakeholders within the ADC, with proponents arguing for younger leadership ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Among those who have publicly expressed this view is Victor Umeh, who stated during a television interview that Atiku, having contested multiple presidential elections since 2003, should consider stepping aside to allow emerging leaders to take the forefront.

Media analyst Jimi Disu also suggested that an Atiku candidacy could weaken the opposition’s chances against incumbent President Bola Tinubu, arguing that a new candidate could broaden electoral appeal.

Atiku has maintained that his political experience and electoral strength, particularly in northern Nigeria, position him as a leading contender within the opposition.

He has questioned the current influence of Kwankwaso in Kano State, noting political divisions involving Governor Abba Yusuf. At the same time, the former vice president has publicly stated his willingness to support any consensus candidate that emerges through a credible process, including Obi.

Obi–Kwankwaso Alliance Gains Ground

Supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso have intensified coordination efforts under a joint framework aimed at securing the ADC presidential ticket.

According to Habibu Mohammad, discussions are ongoing to formalise a joint ticket, with indications that Kwankwaso may accept a vice-presidential role in a bid to consolidate opposition support.

The alignment is also being linked by political insiders to the influence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who has consistently advocated for a unified opposition front to challenge the ruling establishment.

The push for a joint ticket has exposed divisions within the ADC and the broader opposition coalition, with competing camps mobilising support ahead of the primaries.

Pro-Atiku voices, including AbdulAziz Na’ibi Abubakar, have warned of potential unrest if the former vice president is pressured out of the race. Such statements have drawn criticism from supporters of the Obi–Kwankwaso alliance, who argue that electoral success depends on presenting a unified and broadly acceptable candidate.

An ADC chieftain, Austin Okai, has called for restraint among supporters, warning that escalating rhetoric could deepen internal fractures and undermine the party’s chances in the general election.

The unfolding contest within the ADC reflects broader efforts among opposition groups to avoid a repeat of the fragmented electoral outcome witnessed in 2023.

Key considerations shaping the debate include:

  • Electoral strength across geopolitical zones
  • Voter mobilisation capacity of emerging political movements
  • The need for a unified opposition ticket
  • Internal party consensus and primary election credibility

As consultations continue, the outcome of the ADC primary is expected to play a significant role in defining the configuration of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
