BREAKING: Federal Lawmakers Tell Tinubu to Sack, Prosecute INEC Chairman Amupitan Over X Account Controversy

Federal lawmakers under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have formally called on President Bola Tinubu to remove the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, from office over an alleged controversy involving a partisan 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account linked to him.

The demand was made on Monday by the leader of the ADC caucus in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Ogene, who cited concerns about the electoral umpire’s neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections.

    The Case Against Amupitan

Addressing journalists, Ogene outlined a series of allegations that he said have compromised the INEC chairman’s ability to oversee a credible electoral process.

“The caucus raised concerns regarding the impartiality and neutrality of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, to oversee free, fair, and credible 2027 general elections,” Ogene stated.

“This follows recent public statements and actions by the chairman that have been deemed compromising, partisan, and conflicted.”

The lawmaker specifically referenced a controversial social media account that a recent fact-check by Daily Trust linked to Amupitan, assigning it a “mostly true” rating.

“It has been alleged that he previously made a partisan statement on his personal X account, wherein he expressed support for the ruling All Progressives Congress. Additionally, he has been accused of posting content alleging Christian genocide in Nigeria.”

Forensic Evidence Cited Despite INEC Denial

Ogene dismissed INEC’s official denial that Amupitan owns the account, pointing instead to digital forensic findings that suggest otherwise.

“Although INEC has denied that Prof. Amupitan is the owner of the X account in question, digital forensic analysis and other online investigations by various sources suggest that the account is indeed his and that the phone number used to create it is registered in his name,” Ogene said.

He added: “This has raised concerns regarding his transparency, integrity, and trustworthiness, particularly given the critical nature of the office he holds, which has far-reaching implications for the nation.”

    The Demand: Sack and Prosecute

The ADC caucus made its position unequivocal, calling not only for Amupitan’s removal but also for his prosecution.

“In light of these inconsistencies and concerns regarding impartiality and integrity, the House caucus, on Monday, April 13, 2026, hereby calls for the removal of Prof. Amupitan from office and advocates for his prosecution in order to safeguard the nation against an avoidable descent into undemocratic practices.”

    The ADC Leadership Crisis Connection

The lawmakers linked their demand to the ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, accusing INEC of worsening internal divisions through partisan intervention.

The dispute centres on the removal of former Senate President David Mark as the recognised leader of the party. The caucus said Mark had previously been acknowledged by INEC as the authentic leader, but the commission later withdrew that recognition and allegedly backed a rival faction led by Nafiu Bala.

“The caucus is gravely concerned about the ostensibly undemocratic action taken by INEC, under the leadership of Prof. Amupitan, which appears to deny the ADC the opportunity to participate in forthcoming elections,” Ogene said.

“This is being achieved through the perpetuation of a leadership crisis within the party, whereby INEC has abdicated its responsibility as an impartial arbiter and instead intervened in the party’s internal affairs.”

He further alleged: “Specifically, the commission appears to be recognising an illegitimate leadership faction, contrary to the authentic leadership of Senator David Mark, which had previously been acknowledged and certified by INEC itself, having met the requisite criteria, as evidenced by a recent affidavit issued by the commission.”

    Allegations of Judicial Collusion

In a striking allegation, the caucus claimed there is credible information suggesting collusion between INEC and certain judicial figures to influence the outcome of a pending case regarding the ADC leadership.

“We note that the commission, in collusion with certain elements within the judiciary, is actively working to undermine the aspirations of the ADC, thereby preventing the party from fielding candidates in forthcoming elections through duplicitous means that obstruct inclusivity within the democratic process,” Ogene alleged.

He added: “In fact, credible information at our disposal suggests that certain individuals within the judiciary and INEC are collaborating to influence the outcome of a case scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2026, regarding the leadership question in the ADC, potentially impacting the recognition of a discredited faction.”

    What Next?

The ADC caucus’s demand represents the most direct legislative call for the INEC chairman’s removal since the X account controversy emerged.

With the ADC national convention scheduled for Tuesday and a court case on the leadership question looming, the coming days are likely to determine not only the future of Prof. Amupitan but also which faction controls the party’s machinery ahead of the 2027 elections.

The presidency has yet to respond to the demand.

Further updates will follow as reactions emerge from the presidency, INEC, and the rival ADC factions.

  • BREAKING: Adamawa ADC Suspends Atiku, Babachir Lawal

BREAKING: Adamawa ADC Suspends Atiku, Babachir Lawal

A fresh crisis has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State as a faction of the party announced the suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, and Transition Committee Chairman Sadiq Ibrahim Dasin.

The decision was made public on Monday during a press briefing addressed by the factional chairman, Raji Zumo, who accused the trio of actions capable of destabilising the party’s structure in Adamawa.

“No Individual Is Above the Law”

In a video released shortly after the briefing, Zumo insisted that the move was necessary to restore discipline and protect the integrity of the party.

“Let it be clearly stated, no individual, regardless of his status or influence, is above the law or the constitution of the African Democratic Congress, as long as he is a card-carrying member of the party,” Zumo declared.

He continued: “Gentlemen of the press, the African Democratic Congress is built on discipline, justice, and the supremacy of law.”

    The Charges

Zumo outlined the specific grounds for the suspension:

“In view of the foregoing and after executive consultation, the leadership of the ADC in Adamawa State hereby announces the immediate suspension of the following individuals from the party:

    • Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Waziri Adamawa

    • Engineer David Baba Lawal, Vice Chairman, North East

    • Barrister Sadiq Ibrahim Dasin, Transition Committee Chairman

Those individuals are suspended for their roles in fostering disunity, creating parallel structures, undermining lawful authority, and disregarding a subsisting court order.”

He added: “This action is taken in the best interest of the party to restore order, protect its dignity, and reaffirm our commitment to democratic values.

    A Party Already in Turmoil

The development comes at a time when the ADC is already embroiled in internal disagreements at the national level. A rival faction within the party has continued to challenge the leadership structure, with Nafiu Bala Gombe laying claim to the position of national chairman.

The crisis has also been linked to disputes surrounding the role of former Senate President David Mark in the party’s national leadership arrangement.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier stepped into the matter by withdrawing recognition from one of the party’s leadership factions, further complicating the situation.

    Convention Looms Amid Chaos

Despite the growing tension, the faction aligned with David Mark has maintained that the party remains stable and focused. It also confirmed readiness for its planned national convention scheduled for Tuesday.

However, the latest action in Adamawa is expected to trigger swift reactions across the party, especially from loyalists of the suspended leaders.

    What Next?

With Atiku Abubakar—a former Vice President and the party’s most prominent figure—now suspended by a state chapter, the ADC faces an existential crisis. Questions are already being raised about the legality of a state chapter suspending a national figure and whether the national leadership will ratify or reverse the decision.

As the leadership crisis continues to unfold, all eyes will be on the Tuesday convention to see which faction emerges with control of the party’s machinery.

This is a developing story. Further updates will follow as reactions from the suspended leaders and the national leadership emerge.

“I Was Sent With N850,000”: 15-Year-Old Confesses to Role in Killing of Brigadier General Braimah in Borno

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North-East) Operation Hadin Kai have arrested a 15-year-old suspect over his alleged involvement in the deadly ambush that claimed the life of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah and three other soldiers in Borno State.

The suspect, identified simply as Tijjani, was apprehended on Sunday in Ngamdu, Borno State, while reportedly on his way to purchase supplies for his group.

Politics Nigeria gathered that Tijjani has confessed to participating in attacks on Benisheik and Ngamdu, including the Thursday assault on a military base that led to the killing of the senior officer.

Brigadier General Braimah, who served as Commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation Hadin Kai, was killed alongside three soldiers when suspected Boko Haram insurgents stormed their base in a coordinated attack.

The Confession: “I Was Sent With N850,000”

In a video seen by Politics Nigeria, the teenage suspect, speaking in Hausa, detailed his movements and mission prior to his arrest.

“Before the attack, we came from Jilli and returned there after the attack. I was sent from Jilli yesterday with N850,000 to collect some logistics from Ngamdu, but I was arrested by troops,” Tijjani said.

He added: “Yesterday (Saturday), I left other fighters, my colleagues, at Jilli. I don’t know what happened to them there.”

The revelation that a 15-year-old was entrusted with nearly N850,000 in cash has raised fresh concerns about the financing networks and recruitment strategies of insurgent groups operating in the North-East.

The attack occurred on Thursday when suspected Boko Haram fighters overran a military position, killing the commander and three of his men. The incident has reignited calls for a comprehensive review of security strategies in the theatre of operations.

    No Official Statement Yet

As of the time of this report, military authorities have yet to issue an official statement confirming the arrest or providing further details on the ongoing investigation into the attack.

However, military sources indicate that Tijjani is currently in custody and providing useful intelligence regarding the movements and supply lines of insurgent cells operating between Jilli and Ngamdu.

    What Next?

The arrest of a child combatant highlights the continued use of underage fighters by terrorist groups in the Lake Chad region—a practice that violates both Nigerian law and international humanitarian conventions.

Further updates are expected as the military concludes its preliminary interrogation of the suspect.

This is a developing story. More details will follow as official statements are released.

They Are Evil in the 24th Century’: Fact-Check Links INEC Chairman Amupitan to Pro-Tinubu 𝕏 Account That Mocked Obi Supporters

A fact-check investigation has established a credible digital link between the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, and a controversial 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account that posted pro-Tinubu content while deriding supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 general elections.

The investigation, conducted by Daily Trust, examined the digital footprint of an account that operated under the handle @joashamupitan and posted content widely interpreted as partisan commentary favouring the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, now President Bola Tinubu.

The findings have triggered fresh calls for the INEC chairman’s resignation, with opposition figures and civil society organisations questioning the neutrality of the electoral umpire ahead of the 2027 elections.

    The Controversial Posts

According to the fact-check report, the account—identified by the permanent user ID 1567086242164101120—was created on September 6, 2022, several months before the general elections.

Investigators uncovered multiple posts that appeared to align the account with the APC while mocking the opposition. Among the most cited entries:

    • March 17, 2023: Reacting to a discussion about supporters of Peter Obi, the account posted: “They are evil in the 24th century.”
    • March 18, 2023: Responding to a post by APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, the account wrote: “Victory is sure.”
    • April 25, 2023: When a pro-Tinubu supporter celebrated the then-president-elect’s reception at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, the account replied with a single word: “Asiwaju.”

These posts have resurfaced online in recent days, sparking widespread outrage, particularly among the Obidient movement—the digitally active and highly mobilised support base of Peter Obi.

The Digital Trail: How the Link Was Established

The fact-check focused on technical identifiers that remain constant even when account details are changed.

Digital analysts noted that while 𝕏 allows users to alter their usernames and display names at will, the user ID is permanent and unchangeable. This creates a traceable history that connects all past and present iterations of an account.

The investigation confirmed that user ID 1567086242164101120 originally operated under the handle @joashamupitan.

However, amid growing public scrutiny on April 10, 2026, the account underwent significant changes. The handle was changed to @Sundayvibe00, the account was locked, and it was subsequently tagged as a “Parody Account.”

Around the same period, a new account bearing the handle @joashamupitan appeared on the platform. This development has raised questions about whether the original handle was vacated to create confusion or whether the new account represents an impersonation attempt.

    The Phone Number Question

The fact-check also examined separate claims circulating online suggesting that the account might be linked to a phone number allegedly associated with Prof. Amupitan through two-factor authentication.

However, the report stated clearly that this specific claim could not be independently verified using available open-source intelligence tools.

“No direct forensic confirmation was obtained linking the phone number to the 𝕏 account,” the report noted, explaining that such verification would require access to internal platform data or telecommunications records beyond public reach.

    INEC and Amupitan Respond

Reacting to the allegations, Prof. Amupitan, through his media aide, issued a categorical denial of any connection to the account.

The INEC chairman maintained that he does not operate any personal account on the 𝕏 platform and has never engaged in partisan commentary online. He stressed that his neutrality extends to both his official responsibilities and private conduct.

INEC also issued an official statement through its Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola. The commission described the account as “fake” and noted that it had undergone multiple alterations, suggesting it may not be a reliable source.

“The account in question has been altered multiple times and bears hallmarks of impersonation,” the INEC statement read. “The Chairman has no association whatsoever with any partisan commentary on social media.”

    Fact-Check Verdict

Despite the denials, the fact-check concluded that there is credible evidence establishing a link between the account and the INEC chairman’s name and digital history.

The investigation found that an 𝕏 account previously operated under the handle @joashamupitan with a consistent user ID and a posting history that engaged with real-time political events in a manner sympathetic to the APC and critical of the opposition.

However, the report acknowledged limitations in reaching a definitive conclusion. The emergence of a second account with the same handle, combined with the absence of irrefutable technical proof such as a confirmed phone number or email address, means the full picture remains incomplete.

Based on the available findings, the claim linking the account to the INEC chairman was rated “mostly true.”

    Resignation Calls Intensify

The “mostly true” verdict has amplified calls for Prof. Amupitan’s immediate resignation.

Political parties, civil society organisations, and online advocacy groups argue that even the appearance of bias at the highest level of Nigeria’s electoral commission is sufficient grounds for new leadership, particularly with the 2027 general election cycle drawing closer.

“The INEC Chairman must be above suspicion,” said a joint statement from a coalition of pro-democracy groups. “A fact-check rating of ‘mostly true’ linking him to partisan commentary is a stain on the integrity of the commission. He should step aside while a full investigation is conducted.”

    What Next?

As of the time of this report, Prof. Amupitan remains in office, and the presidency has not issued any official reaction to the controversy.

However, with political temperatures already rising ahead of the 2027 elections, the pressure on INEC to resolve questions about its neutrality is unlikely to subside.

For now, the “24th century” post continues to circulate widely on Nigerian social media—a digital artefact that opposition voices point to as evidence that the referee of the nation’s democracy may have been wearing partisan colours.

This is a developing story. Further updates will follow as reactions from political stakeholders, civil society, and the international community emerge.

Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today — April 13, 2026

Dollar To Naira Exchange Rate Today.

The dollar to naira exchange rate on April 13, 2026, remains under close scrutiny as Nigeria’s foreign exchange market continues to experience volatility driven by supply constraints and sustained demand for the United States dollar.

At the official market, the naira traded at approximately ₦1,363 per dollar, according to data from the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), the country’s primary official FX trading window.

Ejes Gist News reports that the current rate reflects ongoing pressure on the local currency despite recent policy adjustments by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) aimed at improving liquidity and transparency in the foreign exchange market.

    Official Exchange Rate at NAFEM

Figures from the official window indicate that the naira’s performance continues to be shaped by institutional transactions and regulated trading activities.

    Key highlights include:

    • Official rate: ₦1,363 per $1
    • Market structure: Driven by banks, exporters, and authorized dealers
    • Price movement: Subject to intra-day fluctuations based on FX supply and demand

The CBN has maintained its stance on a unified exchange rate system, with the NAFEM window serving as the benchmark for official transactions.

    Parallel Market Rates

In the parallel market, commonly referred to as the black market, the dollar exchanged at a significantly higher rate than the official window.

    Market checks show:

    • Parallel market rate: Above ₦1,400 per $1
    • Operators: Bureau de change agents and informal traders
    • Price variation: Dependent on transaction volume and location

The disparity between official and parallel market rates continues to highlight structural inefficiencies and unmet demand within the formal FX system.

    Drivers of Exchange Rate Pressure

Economic analysts and financial institutions attribute the sustained weakness of the naira to several underlying factors:

    • Limited foreign exchange inflows, particularly from oil exports
    • High import dependency, increasing demand for dollars
    • Speculative activities in the informal market
    • Global dollar strength, affecting emerging market currencies
    • Monetary policy adjustments and market confidence levels

These factors collectively contribute to persistent volatility in the exchange rate.

    Economic Implications for Nigeria

The current exchange rate environment carries broad implications for businesses, households, and the wider economy.

    Key impacts include:

    • Rising cost of imported goods, including food and industrial inputs
    • Inflationary pressure across key sectors
    • Increased operational costs for manufacturers and SMEs
    • Higher naira value of diaspora remittances

Import-dependent sectors remain particularly exposed to exchange rate fluctuations, with cost pressures often passed on to consumers.

    Policy Outlook and Market Expectations

Financial analysts indicate that exchange rate stability will depend on a combination of fiscal and monetary measures.

    Critical factors to monitor include:

Improvement in foreign exchange supply, especially from non-oil exports,

Sustained policy consistency by the CBN,

Efforts to boost local production and reduce import reliance and

    Investor confidence and capital inflows.

The dollar to naira exchange rate remains a central indicator of Nigeria’s macroeconomic stability, with policymakers under continued pressure to implement reforms that enhance FX liquidity and narrow the gap between official and parallel market rates.

Tompolo at 55: DOPF Hails Ex-Warlord as Tantita Security Boosts Nigeria’s Oil Production

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has extended warm felicitations to High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, describing the former militant leader as a “Niger Delta liberator and a renewed force for good” on the occasion of his 55th birthday.

In a press release signed by its Secretary, Shedrack Onitsha-FCIIMS, MNIPR, the Forum highlighted Tompolo’s remarkable transformation from the frontlines of the Niger Delta struggle to his current role as a stabilising force whose private security outfit, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, has become instrumental in curbing crude oil theft and restoring national revenue.

A Legacy of Resilience and Transformation

The DOPF statement emphasised that Tompolo’s journey reflects a rare blend of strength and compassion that continues to inspire millions across the region.

“At 55, we celebrate not just the life of High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, but a legacy of resilience, courage, and transformation,” the statement read. “From his days as a champion of the Niger Delta struggle to his present role as a stabilising force, Tompolo has remained steadfast in his commitment to the peace, unity, and development of the region.”

Tantita Security and the Fight Against Oil Theft

The publishers singled out Tompolo’s leadership of Tantita Security Services as a model for community-led security interventions. The company, contracted by the Federal Government to protect oil pipelines in the Niger Delta, has been widely credited with exposing and dismantling sophisticated networks of illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism.

“Through your leadership in Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, you have demonstrated that sustainable peace is achievable when local knowledge, community trust, and strategic coordination are effectively harnessed,” DOPF stated. “Your efforts have significantly reduced pipeline vandalism and oil theft, thereby strengthening national revenue and restoring confidence in the Niger Delta.”

Since Tantita’s deployment, Nigeria’s crude oil production has rebounded from historic lows, climbing above 1.5 million barrels per day and providing much-needed fiscal breathing room for the Federal Government.

    Philanthropy and Humanitarian Service

Beyond security, DOPF acknowledged Tompolo’s growing philanthropic footprint across Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers States. The Forum noted that his renewed commitment to humanitarian service has endeared him to many and reinforced his legacy as a leader dedicated to the well-being of his people.

“We also commend your expanding philanthropic engagements, which have touched countless lives across the region. Your renewed commitment to humanitarian service underscores a deeper sense of responsibility to your people and reflects the true essence of leadership anchored on service and sacrifice.”

    Prayers for the Years Ahead

The Forum concluded its tribute with prayers for God’s continued protection, sound health, and wisdom for the celebrant, expressing hope that he will continue to play a vital role in fostering peace, unity, and sustainable development in the Niger Delta.

After Borno Ambush Kills General, 17 Soldiers, Lawyer Tells Tinubu: “Resignation Is Not a Taboo

Legal practitioner Maduabuchi Idam has publicly called on President Bola Tinubu to consider stepping down from office, arguing that the federal government’s inability to stem the tide of escalating violence has rendered the current administration ineffective.

In a strongly-worded statement released on Saturday, Idam declared that resignation is an honourable path for any leader who finds the protection of citizens increasingly impossible to guarantee.

The lawyer’s remarks come in the wake of a devastating ambush in Borno State that claimed the lives of Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah and 17 soldiers, an incident that has reignited national outrage over the government’s security strategy.

    “Resignation Is Not a Taboo”

Idam dismissed the notion that stepping down constitutes political failure, insisting instead that it reflects a recognition of one’s limitations in the face of overwhelming national crisis.

“Resignation is not a taboo,” Idam stated. “It is a legitimate and honourable option for any leader who campaigned on promises of security but now finds the nation slipping deeper into chaos. The President said he was prepared for this job. The evidence on the ground suggests otherwise.”

    Outdated Security Template Under Fire

The legal practitioner took specific aim at the administration’s military approach, which he described as a “doctrinal security template” inherited from previous governments and ill-suited to modern asymmetric warfare.

“We are fighting drones and satellite-coordinated insurgents with manual combat and conventional troop movements,” Idam argued. “The bandits and terrorists have evolved. The government has not. Until we deploy a technology-heavy strategy—drones, CCTV networks, and real-time satellite surveillance—we will continue to bury soldiers and civilians alike.

Legal Redress Looms Over IDP Neglect

Beyond the critique of military tactics, Idam expressed grave concern over the government’s treatment of internally displaced persons (IDPs), who now number in the millions across Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, and beyond.

He warned that if the state continues to fail in its constitutional duty to protect lives and property, affected citizens may have no choice but to seek legal redress against the Federal Government for the violation of their fundamental rights.

“You cannot displace millions, fail to protect them, and expect silence forever,” Idam cautioned. “The courts may soon be asked to determine whether the government has abdicated its primary responsibility.”

    ADC Joins Chorus of Condemnation

Idam’s call echoes a recent statement by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) , which accused the Tinubu administration of prioritising political maneuvering over the protection of Nigerian lives.

The ADC’s criticism followed the same Borno ambush that claimed General Braimah and his men—a loss the opposition party described as “a painful reminder that those at the top are distracted by 2027 while soldiers die in the trenches.”

    What Next?

While the presidency has yet to respond directly to Idam’s resignation call, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has repeatedly maintained that the current administration is making unprecedented investments in military hardware and intelligence gathering.

However, with the death toll among senior military officers rising—and public patience wearing thin—pressure continues to mount on President Tinubu to demonstrate tangible results in the fight against insurgency and banditry.

This is a developing story. Further updates will follow as reactions from the presidency and civil society emerge.

Key Observations from the Full List

    1. IPOB Inclusion (S/N 27)
The most politically significant entry is the listing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alongside ISWAP and Ansaru in the same sequence. This designation under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act carries immediate legal consequences for individuals or entities found transacting with or providing material support to the group.

    2. Tukur Mamu (S/N 5)
The inclusion of Tukur Mamu, a publisher and negotiator involved in the Abuja–Kaduna train hostage crisis, reinforces the government’s position that his role extended beyond mediation into alleged facilitation. He is currently facing trial on related charges.

    3. “YAN GROUP”
The list contains a formatting irregularity in which “YAN” appears as a first name and “GROUP” as a surname in two entries. Security sources suggest this may be a database error referencing “Yan Bindiga” or “Yan Ta’adda” — generic Hausa terms used to describe armed bandit groups operating in the North-West and North-Central regions.

    4. South-East Names
The list includes several Igbo names (S/N 35–48), including Simon Njoku, Chiwendu Owoh, Ginika Orji, Awo Uchechukwu, and Eze Okpoto. While the document does not explicitly label them as IPOB members, their inclusion on a terrorism financing list alongside the group suggests alleged financial links.

    Legal Implications

Under Section 45 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, any individual or entity listed in the gazette is subject to:

    • Immediate freezing of all bank accounts and assets
    • Travel bans and immigration restrictions
    • Prohibition from accessing arms, ammunition, or financial services

Financial institutions that fail to report transactions linked to the listed individuals risk regulatory sanctions from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

This directive takes immediate effect following its publication by the Nigeria Sanctions Committee.

  • DSS Arrests Senator Aliyu Gebi for Allegedly “Marketing Falsehood” to US, UK Embassies Against Nigeria

DSS Arrests Senator Aliyu Gebi for Allegedly “Marketing Falsehood” to US, UK Embassies Against Nigeria

Operatives of Nigeria’s domestic intelligence agency, the Department of State Services (DSS), have arrested a former federal lawmaker, Aliyu Gebi, over allegations of disseminating misleading security intelligence to foreign embassies operating in the country.

The development has drawn attention within diplomatic and security circles, amid concerns about the implications for Nigeria’s international reputation and foreign relations.

Ejes Gist News reports that the incident comes at a time when global partners are closely monitoring security developments across West Africa.

Sources familiar with the matter confirmed that Gebi, who served in the 7th National Assembly and later transitioned into private security consultancy, was taken into custody following weeks of surveillance of his communications and activities.

‘Fake News From Nigeria’ — Trump Slams CNN Over Iran Report, Cites Nigerian Source

He was reportedly arrested on April 3 and has since been granted administrative bail. However, he remains under investigation and is required to report periodically to DSS headquarters as inquiries continue.

Security officials allege that the former lawmaker circulated intelligence reports to several foreign missions that were later deemed inaccurate and capable of triggering unnecessary alarm.

According to multiple sources, the reports focused heavily on Nigeria’s aviation and broader security landscape, presenting what authorities described as an exaggerated risk outlook. Officials argue that such assessments, when unverified, can influence diplomatic decisions and international perception.

The alleged dissemination of the reports is said to have prompted reactions among international stakeholders, particularly within the aviation sector.

Industry sources indicated that Lufthansa temporarily adjusted some of its Nigeria-bound operations following the circulation of the intelligence. Similarly, British Airways was reported to have reviewed its flight schedules before opting against immediate changes.

Diplomatic sources also confirmed that several embassies initiated internal risk assessments after receiving the reports, with some considering precautionary measures before engagements with Nigerian authorities.

US Travel Advisory and Security Concerns

The situation coincided with a travel advisory issued by the United States Department of State, warning its citizens about security risks in parts of Nigeria.

The advisory highlighted concerns including kidnapping, armed robbery, and insurgent activities, particularly in states such as Borno, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, and Rivers. It also advised non-essential personnel to consider departure and urged travellers to reassess plans to affected regions.

While it remains unclear whether the advisory was directly linked to the disputed intelligence, the timing has raised questions among policy analysts and security observers.

    Nigerian Government Response

Nigerian authorities have rejected what they described as exaggerated portrayals of the country’s security environment. Officials maintain that although challenges persist, coordinated military and intelligence operations have led to measurable improvements in several regions.

Government representatives have also engaged foreign partners, urging reliance on verified intelligence and cautioning against actions that could undermine investor confidence, aviation traffic, and diplomatic ties.

A senior official familiar with the engagements stated that several embassies reconsidered initial plans after consultations with Nigerian authorities.

    Ongoing Investigation

As of the time of filing this report, the DSS has not issued an official public statement detailing the circumstances of the arrest or the scope of the investigation.

Attempts to obtain comments from Gebi were unsuccessful. Security sources indicate that investigations remain active, with authorities examining possible networks and communication channels linked to the dissemination of the reports.

Analysts note that the case underscores the sensitivity of intelligence handling and the potential consequences of unverified security information on international relations, economic stability, and public confidence.

‘Fake News From Nigeria’ — Trump Slams CNN Over Iran Report, Cites Nigerian Source

United States President Donald Trump has rejected a report by CNN on a ceasefire agreement involving Iran, describing the claim as false and alleging it originated from a “fake news site from Nigeria.

The dispute follows international attention on a reported ceasefire arrangement between Washington and Tehran.

Ejes Gist News reports that the development came shortly after a deadline issued by Trump, warning of severe consequences if hostilities escalated.

    Dispute Over Iranian Statement

CNN had reported that Iran characterised the ceasefire as a “historic and crushing victory,” citing a statement attributed to the country’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).

According to the report, Iranian authorities claimed the United States accepted a 10-point proposal advanced by Tehran as part of the agreement. The statement described the conflict as an “unlawful and criminal war” against Iran.

Trump, responding via his Truth Social platform, dismissed the report as fabricated.

“The alleged statement put out by CNN World News is a fraud, as CNN well knows,” the US president wrote.

He further alleged that the report’s source was linked to an unnamed Nigerian outlet, which he described as unreliable, though he provided no evidence to support the claim.

    Allegations Against Nigerian Source

Trump escalated his criticism by asserting that the statement had been “immediately picked up” and amplified by CNN as legitimate.

“The false statement was linked to a fake news site (from Nigeria),” he said, without identifying the platform.

In a separate post, he referred to the source as “a new, trouble-making site from Nigeria” and called for the withdrawal of the report. He also indicated that authorities were examining whether the publication could amount to a legal violation.

    Iran’s Official Position

Trump subsequently shared what he described as the official Iranian position, attributed to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Araghchi stated that Iran would suspend defensive operations if attacks from the United States and Israel ceased.

“If attacks against Iran are halted, our powerful armed forces will cease their defensive operations,” he said.

He also confirmed that Iran would allow limited reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for global shipping under coordinated conditions.

Iranian state-linked media outlets, including Tasnim News Agency, also published statements attributed to the SNSC echoing similar language about a “historic victory.”

Regulatory Concerns Raised in the US

The controversy has drawn attention from US regulators. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr warned that broadcasters could face consequences if they fail to operate in the public interest.

Carr stated that media organisations risk regulatory action, including potential licence implications, if professional standards are not upheld.

    CNN Responds

CNN has defended its reporting, maintaining that the statement attributed to Iran was sourced from Iranian officials and corroborated by multiple state-affiliated media outlets in the country.

The network has not indicated any intention to retract the report.

    Key Facts at a Glance

    • Trump denies CNN’s report on Iran ceasefire claims
    • US president alleges source linked to unnamed Nigerian outlet
    • No evidence provided to substantiate claim
    • Iran’s foreign minister outlines conditional ceasefire stance
    • US regulator raises concerns over media accountability

The disagreement underscores ongoing tensions surrounding information verification in international conflict reporting, particularly where official statements and state-linked media sources intersect.

Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today — Wednesday, April 8, 2026

LAGOS — The Naira recorded a mixed performance in the foreign exchange market on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, posting modest gains at the official window even as pressure mounted on the parallel market.

Data from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) showed the domestic currency closing at ₦1,382.04 per dollar, recovering from an intraday high of ₦1,383.34. However, the parallel market continued to trade at a significant premium, with Bureau De Change (BDC) operators quoting rates between ₦1,410 and ₦1,425 per dollar in Lagos and Abuja.

The widening gap—now approximately ₦30 to ₦43—has raised fresh concerns among analysts who warn that sustained divergence between the two windows could fuel inflationary pressures and complicate monetary policy transmission.

    Reserve Decline Raises Caution

The latest figures from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) indicate that the Naira weakened to ₦1,389 per dollar on Tuesday as external reserves fell by about $850 million over a three-week period, dropping to $49.18 billion between March 11 and April 2, 2026

This decline marks a reversal from earlier gains. CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso had announced in February that reserves climbed to $50.45 billion as of February 16, 2026—the highest level in 13 years—supported by improved capital inflows and ongoing policy reforms.

The recent drop has injected fresh caution into the market, with traders closely watching the apex bank’s next moves.

    Intraday Volatility Persists

Tuesday’s trading session saw the Naira fluctuate between ₦1,381 and ₦1,390 against the dollar, with an average rate of ₦1,386.3 per dollar, reflecting persistent demand pressures despite improved liquidity measures.

NECO Result Checker 2025: How to Easily Check Your NECO Results Online

Market participants attribute the sustained parallel market premium to unmet demand from small-scale importers, travellers, and individuals who continue to face difficulties accessing foreign exchange through official channels.

    CBN Prepares New FX Manual

In a bid to attract inflows and strengthen stability, the Central Bank of Nigeria has signalled plans to unveil a new foreign exchange manual. Muhammad Abdullahi, the bank’s deputy governor, confirmed that the updated framework is designed to deepen transparency and improve the overall functioning of the nation’s FX market.

Analysts say the success of the new manual will depend largely on its ability to narrow the gap between the official and parallel markets while boosting investor confidence.

    Outlook for the Week

As trading continues through the week, financial experts advise travellers, business owners, and investors to monitor real-time exchange rate movements closely. The closing rate for Wednesday remains subject to late-afternoon trading volumes and the level of dollar supply available in the system.

With external reserves trending downward and parallel market demand remaining robust, the Naira may face continued headwinds unless the CBN deploys further liquidity interventions or introduces policy measures that effectively stabilise supply.

Stop wasting your time praying when you’ve elected a bad person – Apostle Suleman

Apostle Suleman Criticises Leadership, Says Prayer Cannot Replace Good Governance

The General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International, Johnson Suleman, has stated that no nation can achieve meaningful progress under poor leadership, warning that spiritual efforts alone cannot compensate for governance failures.

The cleric made the remarks during his Easter Sunday sermon on April 5, where he addressed national concerns over insecurity and governance. Ejes Gist News reports that Suleman expressed strong dissatisfaction with the conduct of political leaders, accusing them of showing limited sensitivity to the hardships faced by citizens.

Concerns Over Insecurity and Public Response

Referencing recent killings in Jos North Local Government Area, Johnson Suleman criticised what he described as misplaced priorities among government officials.

He questioned the practice of public officials engaging in media appearances during periods of mourning, suggesting that such actions undermine the gravity of national tragedies.

According to him, the increasing frequency of violent attacks and loss of lives has contributed to a growing sense of desensitisation among Nigerians.

“Prayer Cannot Replace Leadership” – Suleman

During the sermon, Suleman stated that prayer alone is insufficient in addressing systemic leadership failures, emphasising the role of governance in national development.

He said citizens who elect ineffective leaders may ultimately face prolonged hardship, adding that the only prayer in such circumstances may be for endurance rather than immediate relief.

    Rising Concerns Over Public Desensitisation

The cleric further observed that repeated exposure to violence has altered public reactions to tragedy, with incidents that previously attracted prolonged national attention now receiving limited response.

He warned that the normalisation of violence risks eroding empathy within society, noting that public discourse has increasingly shifted towards debating casualty figures rather than addressing underlying issues.

Suleman also criticised what he described as attempts to manage public perception through media engagement during crises, arguing that such actions reflect a lack of empathy for affected communities.

  • Bandits Attack Churches in Kaduna, Kill Worshippers During Easter Service

Bandits Attack Churches in Kaduna, Kill Worshippers During Easter Service

Bandits have launched a deadly हमला on Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing several worshippers during Easter service and abducting others.

The нападение occurred in the early hours of Sunday, when armed assailants reportedly stormed two churches—First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church—targeting congregants gathered for Easter celebrations.

Ejes Gist News reports that at least seven people were confirmed dead, although casualty figures remained unclear at the time of filing this report.

    Eyewitness Accounts and Official Confirmation

Mark Bawa, the councillor representing Awon Ward, where the Ariko district is located, confirmed the incident during a telephone interview. He said he was en route to the affected community to verify the extent of casualties and damage.

“I am currently heading to the community to ascertain the exact number of casualties. Some sources reported seven deaths, while others mentioned eight. I will provide an update once details are confirmed,” Bawa stated.

He disclosed that the attackers arrived in large numbers, surrounding the area before opening fire indiscriminately on worshippers.

“They came in large numbers and began shooting sporadically at people during the service. Several were killed, and many others were abducted into the bush,” he added.

    Delayed Security Response Raises Concerns

Local sources attributed the delayed response from security agencies to poor telecommunications coverage in the area, which reportedly hindered timely distress calls.

Residents said the attackers operated for an extended period without resistance, further highlighting the vulnerability of rural communities in southern Kaduna to recurrent armed ആക്രമണങ്ങൾ.

Pattern of Attacks in Kachia LGA

The latest incident follows a similar attack in Kurmin Wali community, also in Kachia Local Government Area, where worshippers were abducted during a church gathering in February.

That incident prompted renewed calls from community leaders and civil society organisations for increased security deployment and proactive intelligence operations across volatile المناطق in southern Kaduna.

Renewed Security Concerns in Southern Kaduna

Security analysts have repeatedly warned of escalating banditry and targeted attacks on soft civilian targets, including places of worship and rural settlements, in Kaduna State.

The recurring nature of such incidents has intensified demands for coordinated federal and state-level interventions to address insecurity in the region, particularly during major religious observances when large gatherings are common.

US Airman Rescued From Iran in ‘Miraculous’ Operation as Trump Drops 48-Hour Ultimatum

President Donald Trump has announced that US forces have successfully rescued a second American airman from inside Iran, describing the mission as “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History.”

The rescue comes as the Middle East teeters on the brink of a full-blown regional war, with Iran launching missiles and drones at several countries, including Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, and Abu Dhabi, on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

Nigerians following global events should understand that this conflict, which erupted on February 28, 2026, with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, has already begun to affect the global economy — including potential fuel prices in Nigeria — due to Iran’s blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz

Miraculous’ Rescue Operation Behind Enemy Lines

President Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to break the news of the successful rescue mission.

“This brave Warrior was behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran, being hunted down by our enemies,” Trump wrote.

“He sustained injuries, but he will be just fine.”

Trump revealed that this “miraculous” operation came just one day after another successful rescue of a pilot, which was not publicly confirmed at the time to avoid jeopardizing the second mission.

According to Iranian media reports, five people were killed during the US rescue operation.

Did Iran Shoot Down the US Plane?

There are conflicting reports about what happened to the American aircraft.

    • Iran’s position: Iranian officials claim their forces successfully downed the plane.

    • US media reports: Several American news outlets have reported that the plane was shot down.

    • US administration: The White House has not publicly confirmed whether the aircraft was downed by enemy fire.

Iran Strikes Multiple Countries as War Spreads

The conflict has now spread far beyond Iran’s borders. On Sunday alone, Iran launched:

    Target Type of Attack
Bahrain Drone attack sparked fire at state energy firm Bapco Energies storage tank
Abu Dhabi Falling debris caused fire at a petrochemical facility
    Israel Missiles and drones launched
    Kuwait Missiles and drones launched

In Lebanon, the Iran-backed group Hezbollah claimed it had targeted an Israeli warship with a cruise missile off the Lebanese coast. Israel has not confirmed this

What This Means for Nigeria and the World

Nigerians should pay attention to this crisis for one major reason: the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has virtually blocked this narrow waterway, through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes. When the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, global oil prices rise — and that directly affects the price of petrol (PMS) in Nigeria.

If the conflict continues, Nigerians could see:

    • Higher fuel prices at the pump

    • Increased cost of imported goods

    • Pressure on the Naira exchange rate

    Trump’s 48-Hour Ultimatum to Iran

On Saturday, Trump issued a fresh ultimatum to the Islamic republic:

“Time is running out — 48 hours before all Hell will reign (sic) down on them.”

This followed an earlier ultimatum on March 26, when Trump gave Iran ten days to “MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT.”

Iran has rejected the threats. General Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi dismissed Trump’s warning as a:

“Helpless, nervous, unbalanced and stupid action.”

He added that “the gates of hell will open for you” — echoing Trump’s own language

Bushehr Nuclear Plant Attack Sparks Radiation Fears

A strike near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant on Saturday killed a guard. The attack has caused international alarm.

Russia, which helped construct and operate the facility, announced it is evacuating 198 workers and condemned the strike as “an evil deed.”

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, warned that continued attacks on the nuclear plant could lead to radioactive fallout that would:

“End life in GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) capitals, not Tehran.”

This is significant because Bushehr is located much closer to Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar than to the Iranian capital.

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that no increase in radiation levels had been reported — but expressed “deep concern” over what he said was the fourth such strike in recent weeks.

Former UN Nuclear Chief Begs Gulf Nations to Stop Trump

Mohamed El-Baradei, who led the IAEA from 1997 to 2009, issued a passionate plea to Gulf governments:

“Please, once again, do everything in your power before this madman turns the region into a ball of fire.”

Iran’s Longest Internet Shutdown in History

As the war rages, Iran has also imposed a nationwide internet blackout. According to Netblocks, a global internet monitoring service, this is now the longest nationwide internet shutdown in history.

Meanwhile, Iran’s internal crackdown continues. The judiciary announced the execution of two men convicted of acting on behalf of Israel and the United States

    What Nigerians Should Do

While this conflict is far from Nigerian shores, its economic impact will likely reach every Nigerian household through fuel prices.

Stay informed — follow reliable news sources for updates on the Strait of Hormuz and global oil prices.

Be prepared — if you can, adjust your budgets to account for possible fuel price increases in the coming weeks.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is a non-profit organization that was established in 1852 to conduct high-quality examinations, certify candidates who have successfully completed the examinations, and provide reliable educational assessment services to the West African sub-region. The WAEC Examination is one of the most important examinations taken by students in West Africa. It is held annually in May/June and November/December for candidates who are in their final year of secondary school education.

The WAEC Examination covers a wide range of subjects including Mathematics, English Language, Science, Social Science, and Arts. It attempts to provide a thorough evaluation of candidates’ abilities by testing their knowledge and proficiency in these areas. The theory and practical exams make up the two sections of the exam. While the practical exams are meant to assess candidates’ practical skills, the theory exams are typically written assessments.

The WAEC Examination is recognized by most universities and colleges in the world and is a requirement for admission into many institutions of higher learning. Employers also use it to evaluate job applicants’ knowledge and abilities. The examination is highly competitive, with millions of students competing for a limited number of spaces in universities and colleges.

The WAEC Examination is administered by the West African Examinations Council, which is responsible for the development and administration of the examination. The council is made up of representatives from the participating countries, which include Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Liberia.

In conclusion, the WAEC Examination is a crucial examination that determines the academic and career future of students in West Africa. It is a rigorous and comprehensive examination that tests the knowledge and skills of candidates in various subjects. The examination is recognized globally and is a requirement for admission into many institutions of higher learning and employment opportunities.

  • Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Black Market (Aboki Rate) Today, April 1, 2026

Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Black Market (Aboki Rate) Today, April 1, 2026

The dollar to naira exchange rate black market (aboki rate) for April 1, 2026, stands at ₦1,430 per dollar in the Lagos parallel market—the rate most Nigerians rely on for real transactions

The dollar to naira exchange rate black market continues to dominate conversations among currency traders, businesses, and individuals seeking foreign exchange in Nigeria. As of Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the black market exchange rate Nigeria remains a key indicator of the naira’s real-time value against the United States dollar.

At the Lagos parallel market, commonly referred to as the aboki rate, currency traders report that the dollar is being sold at ₦1,430, while the buying rate stands at ₦1,410, based on information obtained from Bureau De Change (BDC) operators.

Black Market Exchange Rate Nigeria – Parallel Market Rates

For Nigerians seeking the most current dollar to naira black market rate, the figures below reflect trading activity in Lagos, which often serves as the benchmark for other cities:

Transaction Black Market Rate (₦ per $)
    Selling Rate ₦1,430
    Buying Rate ₦1,410

These black market rates Nigeria are highly volatile and can fluctuate based on demand, location, and transaction volume. Currency traders advise that the aboki rate today may vary slightly between Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt.

CBN Official Exchange Rate – Dollar to Naira Today

While the dollar to naira parallel market rate is what many Nigerians rely on for actual transactions, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) maintains a different official exchange window. According to available data:

Rate Type Amount (₦ per $)
    Highest Rate ₦1,388
    Lowest Rate ₦1,385

The apex bank has consistently reiterated that it does not recognize the black market exchange rate Nigeria as a legitimate channel for foreign exchange transactions. Instead, the CBN advises individuals and businesses seeking forex to conduct their transactions through authorized financial institutions such as commercial banks and registered BDCs operating within the official framework.

Why the Gap Between Official and Black Market Rates?

The widening gap between the CBN official rate and the dollar to naira black market rate reflects persistent demand pressures, limited dollar liquidity in the official window, and the accessibility challenges many Nigerians face when trying to source forex through banks.

For most individuals—whether paying school fees, covering medical expenses, or importing goods—the parallel market rate remains the only viable option, making the aboki rate a critical economic indicator for households and businesses alike.

    Key Takeaways for Nigerians

    Metric Rate
Dollar to Naira Black Market Selling Rate ₦1,430
Dollar to Naira Black Market Buying Rate ₦1,410
    CBN Official Highest Rate ₦1,388
    CBN Official Lowest Rate ₦1,385
Gap Between Black Market and Official Rate ₦42 – ₦45

Tantita Contract: 50 Delta Monarchs Unite, Endorse Pipeline Surveillance Firm, Beg Tinubu for Renewal, Expansion

    Important Notice to Our Readers

It is worth noting that the black market exchange rate Nigeria is highly volatile and may vary depending on:

    • Location – rates in Kano, Abuja, Port Harcourt, or Lagos may differ slightly

    • Demand pressure – spikes in demand often drive rates upward

    • Transaction volume – larger transactions may attract slightly better rates

As such, the actual dollar to naira today rate at which individuals buy or sell foreign currency may differ marginally from the figures quoted above. For the most accurate aboki rate, it is advisable to consult multiple BDC operators in your location.

What This Means for the Nigerian Economy

The persistent gap between the CBN official rate and the dollar to naira parallel market rate continues to pose challenges for economic planning, import-dependent businesses, and individuals with foreign currency obligations. While the CBN has implemented various measures to boost dollar liquidity and stabilize the currency, the black market rate Nigeria remains the preferred benchmark for many due to its accessibility and responsiveness to real-time market forces.
