“You’ll Collapse and Go” – Wike Warns Politicians Backing Betrayal

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to politicians he accused of supporting betrayal in Rivers State politics.

The former Rivers State governor declared that public office holders who align with what he described as disloyal political conduct would eventually face the consequences of their actions.

Ejes Gist News reports that Wike made the remarks on Saturday in Port Harcourt while commissioning the Rivers State chapter office of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a political support group.

    Strong Words at Public Event

Speaking before party supporters and political associates, the FCT minister said betrayal would ultimately return to those who encourage it.

He warned that senators, members of the House of Representatives, ministers and governors who support disloyalty would experience similar treatment in the future.

“Whether you are a senator, House of Reps member, minister or governor, and you support betrayals, people will continue to betray you in life. Betrayal is your portion,” Wike said.

    Warning of Political Consequences

The minister insisted that political actions have consequences and that those who encourage disloyal conduct would eventually reap what they sow.

He suggested that politicians who participate in what he called acts of betrayal would not escape the repercussions.

“The day you will be betrayed, you will not have mouth to say anything. There you will collapse and go and they will announce that so-so person has died,” Wike stated.

“That is the seed you have planted and whatever you plant, you will reap. Since you are planting betrayal, betrayal will follow you everywhere.”

    Remarks Target Political Opponents

Although Wike did not mention any individual by name during his speech, his comments come amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers State.

The minister referred to governors seeking second terms and those attempting to install successors, warning that anyone supporting betrayal would not succeed.

“Every governor who is doing a second tenure, governor who has ambition to put a successor and is supporting betrayal, you will never survive it,” he said.

    Continuing Political Disputes

Wike’s statement highlights the persistent political disagreements within Rivers State and among members of the ruling political structure.

His latest comments reflect the deep divisions that have characterised political alignments in the state in recent years.

The FCT minister remains one of the most influential political figures from the South-South region and continues to play an active role in national and state politics.

Tinubu Not Involved in Christian Genocide Claims – Jimoh Ibrahim

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South Senatorial District, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is involved in any form of religious persecution in Nigeria.

The lawmaker, who is the ambassador-designate and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, said the President’s family background and personal associations contradict allegations of a state-sponsored campaign against Christians.

Ibrahim argued that Tinubu’s marriage to Pastor Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, demonstrates that the President cannot be linked to claims of Christian genocide. Ejes Gist News reports that he made the remarks while reacting to recent diplomatic engagements involving the First Lady in the United States.

    Remarks Follow U.S. Engagement

The senator spoke in a statement issued after American President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged Remi Tinubu at an international forum.

According to Ibrahim, the First Lady’s visibility in global diplomatic circles has helped to correct what he described as misconceptions about Nigeria’s internal security challenges.

He said her engagements had reinforced the position that Nigeria’s security problems are national issues and not targeted religious persecution.

    Senator Rejects Genocide Allegations

Ibrahim maintained that Nigeria is not known internationally as a country engaged in religious genocide.

“If the President can have a pastor as his wife, then it is evident that he has no hand in religious genocide, which Nigeria is not known for,” the senator stated.

He added that allegations portraying Nigeria’s security difficulties as a religious agenda were inaccurate and politically motivated.

Diplomatic Role of the First Lady

The lawmaker commended Remi Tinubu for what he described as strategic diplomatic intervention that has reshaped global perception of Nigeria.

He noted that her presence at high-level international engagements had redirected global opinion to focus on the complexity of Nigeria’s security situation rather than reducing it to a religious conflict.

Horrific Scene as Islamic Terrorists Killed 70 People, Vandalize 35 Churches

Ibrahim emphasized that diplomacy often operates beyond formal negotiations and public speeches.

“For her to gain access to that level of engagement is a demonstration of influence rooted in religious diplomacy, which lies at the centre of the global misunderstanding about Nigeria,” he said.

    International Perception and National Interest

The senator further explained that global politics is largely driven by interests and perceptions.

He stated that some international political interests had previously framed Nigeria’s security challenges along religious lines, an interpretation he described as misleading.

According to him, the First Lady’s engagement with influential global figures had helped to counter that narrative and present a clearer picture of the situation in Nigeria.

    Security Challenges Not Religious Agenda

Ibrahim reiterated that Nigeria’s security problems are multifaceted and affect citizens of different faiths across the country.

He said the recent diplomatic developments sent a strong message that the President is not involved in any form of religious persecution.

Describing Remi Tinubu as a stabilising diplomatic force, the senator claimed that her actions had achieved in a short time what years of traditional diplomacy might not have accomplished.

“This is a case of action speaking louder than words. History will be kind to her,” Ibrahim added.

Terrorists Kill Over 160 in Kwara, Emir’s Wives, Children, Chief Imam, Teachers, Students Among Victims

Kwara State has been plunged into mourning following a coordinated and deadly attack on the Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, where armed assailants reportedly killed over 160 people in one of the deadliest assaults the state has experienced in recent years.

Ejes Gist News reports that the massacre, which began late on Tuesday, February 3, left entire families dead, homes and public structures burned, and survivors fleeing into nearby forests and bushlands. By Wednesday morning, the communities were described as scenes of horror, with charred buildings, mass graves, and bodies scattered across the settlements.

    Coordinated Assault and Mass Casualties

Residents and local officials said the attackers arrived in large numbers, armed with sophisticated weapons, and operated with a high level of coordination. Witnesses reported that the gunmen stormed from multiple directions, firing indiscriminately before targeting villagers inside their homes.

Horrific Scene as Islamic Terrorists Killed 70 People, Vandalize 35 Churches

“They were shooting everywhere. People ran in different directions, but many could not escape,” a survivor, who requested anonymity, said. “They went house to house, dragging people out. Some were killed instantly, others were gathered in groups and shot.”

The palace of the Emir of Woro, Alhaji Saliu Bio Umar, was among the structures set ablaze, along with residential buildings, shops, schools, and public facilities. Preliminary reports indicate that victims included traditional leaders, family members of the Emir, teachers, students, farmers, traders, and religious figures, including the Chief Imam of one of the affected communities.

Reports of Emir’s Family Among the Dead

Unverified accounts circulating in the area suggested that some of the Emir’s wives and children were killed during the assault, although these reports have not yet been independently confirmed. The Emir himself is currently unaccounted for, with community sources alleging that his official vehicle was seized during the attack, raising fears of abduction or death.

    Possible Motive and Pattern

Preliminary intelligence suggests that the attackers may be extremists or armed bandits operating along Nigeria’s border with Niger. Residents reported that the group had previously visited the communities weeks earlier, posing as preachers and urging locals to reject the Nigerian constitution in favor of strict Sharia law. Security experts note that this pattern—initial ideological engagement followed by violent retaliation—is consistent with tactics used by extremist groups to control rural areas.

    Security Response and Government Reaction

In response to the massacre, police, military, and tactical units have been deployed to Kaiama LGA, with checkpoints established and aerial and ground patrols underway.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq condemned the attack, describing it as “cowardly and barbaric,” and pledged collaboration with federal authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. The governor also promised relief for displaced residents and strengthened security measures around vulnerable communities, especially near borders.

    Humanitarian Impact

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), working with local emergency teams, estimated that at least 162 people were killed, although the toll could rise as recovery operations continue. At least 102 victims have already been buried in mass Islamic funeral rites conducted under security oversight. Survivors have fled to neighboring towns, and many remain traumatized and displaced.

“This is a tragedy beyond words,” said the Emir of Kaiama. “Every hour, more bodies are being found. We are still counting our dead.”

The massacre has reignited national debates over rural security, border control, and the protection of vulnerable communities. Civil society groups and political leaders have called for urgent reforms in intelligence gathering and emergency response, highlighting the persistent threat posed by extremist and criminal elements in Nigeria’s rural areas.

With the full extent of the attack still being assessed, Kwara State faces a long and painful recovery, as families search for missing relatives and communities attempt to rebuild amid widespread devastation.

Seven Suspects Arrested As Nigerian Police and UK NCA Bust International Financial Scam Centre in Delta

The Nigeria Police Force has dismantled an international online investment fraud syndicate operating out of Agbor, Delta State, in a coordinated operation involving British authorities and a major social media company.

Ejes Gist News reports that the raid was conducted by the Police National Cybercrime Centre (NPF–NCC) in partnership with the UK National Crime Agency (NCA), with intelligence support from Meta. Seven suspects were arrested for allegedly defrauding victims across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries of millions of dollars through sophisticated online investment schemes.

    Modus Operandi of the Syndicate

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the syndicate operated through social media deception, recruiting and training young individuals in retirement investment fraud and phishing techniques. Victims were targeted in the United States, the UK, and other international jurisdictions.

Police identified the suspects as Collins Ogwuorie, Christian Ogwuorie, Gbenoba Emmanuel, Samuel Olufemi, Collins Victor, Onyeka Emenem, and Kefas Ogunbor. Investigators said Collins Ogwuorie, allegedly the mastermind, procured hundreds of social media accounts from online vendors and distributed them to recruits. These accounts were used for impersonation, mass spamming, and direct engagement with victims under the guise of cryptocurrency trading and investment advisory.

The syndicate reportedly ran a fake Facebook community called “Retirement Strategies: Real Estate and Market Insights,” posting fabricated success stories and testimonials to lure victims into transferring funds. Items recovered during the raid included 26 mobile phones, 42 SIM cards, and a laptop believed to have coordinated the scams.

    Ongoing Investigations and Warnings

The Director of the NPF–NCC, Ifeanyi Henry Uche, said investigations are ongoing and that additional arrests could follow as digital evidence is analysed. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the cybercrime unit for the operation and reiterated the force’s commitment to tackling online financial crimes and protecting citizens.

Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution with online investment offers and to verify platforms before transferring money.

    International Collaboration

Meta highlighted the importance of law enforcement collaboration in combating online scams. Sylvia Musalagani, Head of Safety Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Türkiye, said, “Scams are increasing across the internet, driven by organised crime syndicates that constantly evolve to evade detection. This takedown demonstrates the impact of cooperation and the importance of a whole-of-society approach.”

The UK National Crime Agency also praised the Nigerian authorities. Matt Mountain, a representative of the NCA, pledged continued cooperation in combating cyber-enabled fraud.

The operation underscores growing international collaboration against cross-border cybercrime and the Nigerian police’s intensified efforts to dismantle organised online financial scams.

  • INEC Releases Full List of Registered Political Parties in Nigeria

INEC Releases Full List of Registered Political Parties in Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the registration of two additional political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, bringing the total number of approved parties in Nigeria to 20.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the development in Abuja in 2026 during the commission’s first regular consultative meeting with leaders of political parties. The announcement followed months of assessment of applications submitted by political associations seeking official recognition.

Ejes Gist News reports that the newly registered parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Their approval marks the first expansion of Nigeria’s political party register in several years.

    Rigorous Registration Process

Amupitan explained that a total of 171 political associations applied for registration, but only two were able to scale through the stringent legal and administrative requirements.

According to him, the Democratic Leadership Alliance met all statutory conditions prescribed by the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines. The commission therefore granted it full registration after a comprehensive verification process.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, on the other hand, was approved following a directive from the Federal High Court. INEC said it complied with the court order after reviewing the party’s application in line with legal provisions.

INEC maintained that the approval process was transparent, objective, and consistent with constitutional requirements governing the registration of political parties.

    Profiles of the New Parties

The Democratic Leadership Alliance outlined governance reforms, youth participation, and social development as core pillars of its political agenda. The party pledged to promote transparency in government and to pursue policies aimed at inclusive economic growth.

Its founders said the platform would focus on grassroots mobilisation and the expansion of democratic opportunities for young Nigerians and marginalised communities.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress described itself as a centrist political movement committed to social justice and equitable distribution of national resources. The party said it intends to strengthen democratic institutions and provide an alternative for voters dissatisfied with existing major parties.

Both parties are expected to begin nationwide mobilisation and membership drives as preparations intensify for future electoral contests.

Updated List of Registered Political Parties

With the inclusion of the two new parties, Nigeria’s officially recognised political organisations now stand at 20. The complete list of registered political parties in Nigeria is as follows:

    1. All Progressives Congress (APC)
    2. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
    3. Accord (A)
    4. Social Democratic Party (SDP)
    5. Labour Party (LP)
    6. All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)
    7. Boot Party (BP)
    8. Action Democratic Party (ADP)
    9. African Action Congress (AAC)
    10. Action Alliance (AA)
    11. National Rescue Movement (NRM)
    12. Zenith Labour Party (ZLP)

    18. Youth Party (YP)
    19. Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) – newly registered
    20. Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) – newly registered

    Implications for the Political Landscape

The expansion of the political party register is expected to broaden electoral choices for Nigerian voters. INEC officials said the presence of additional parties aligns with democratic principles of pluralism and political participation.

Political analysts note that the approval of new parties may intensify competition ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly at the federal and state levels.

INEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all registered parties operate in compliance with electoral laws, campaign finance regulations, and internal democracy standards.

The commission also urged political actors to focus on issue-based campaigns and constructive engagement as preparations for future elections continue.

  • Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Indicted Over Murder Allegation Against Godswill Akpabio

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Indicted Over Murder Allegation Against Godswill Akpabio

Akpoti-Uduaghan Indicted Over Allegations Linking Akpabio to Umoren Murder.

A police investigation report has indicted Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over allegations that she made false claims linking Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the 2021 murder of Iniobong Umoren. The report concluded that the allegations were baseless and unsupported by any evidence.

The investigation followed a formal petition submitted in April 2025 by Sandra Duru, President of the Unique Family Foundation, to the Inspector-General of Police. Duru alleged that Akpoti-Uduaghan contacted her on March 27, 2025, and claimed that Akpabio and his wife, Unoma, were responsible for the killing of Umoren and the alleged harvesting of her organs.

Ejes Gist News reports that the police investigation report, dated February 3, 2026, was signed by Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede of the Police Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja. The document was officially addressed to the petitioner and detailed findings from months of forensic and criminal investigations.

    Police Investigation Findings

According to the report by Premium Times, Akpoti-Uduaghan was invited by investigators and provided a cautionary statement on April 28, 2025. In the statement, she denied making the allegations attributed to her.

Police investigators also invited a key witness, Ina Okopi Agu, who allegedly provided Duru’s phone number to the senator. Agu reportedly confirmed the circumstances that led to the telephone conversation between Akpoti-Uduaghan and the petitioner.

The police further disclosed that forensic analysis was conducted on an audio recording presented as evidence. The analysis confirmed that the voice in the recording was human and consistent with normal speech patterns.

    Review of Umoren Murder Case

As part of the investigation, detectives were deployed to Akwa Ibom State to review the circumstances surrounding the murder of Iniobong Umoren. Investigators examined the original post-mortem report, trial records, and other official documents connected to the case.

The police report stated that the autopsy conducted on Umoren clearly established that no organ was removed or tampered with. Family members of the deceased were also interviewed and confirmed that the body was intact and uncompromised.

Investigators reviewed certified true copies of court records relating to the trial of Uduak Frank Akpan, who was convicted and sentenced to death in 2021 for the murder of Umoren. The records showed no evidence supporting claims of organ harvesting.

The report concluded that the allegation allegedly communicated by Akpoti-Uduaghan to Duru was “false and without any iota of truth whatsoever.” It further stated that Akpabio and his wife had “absolutely nothing to do” with the murder or any alleged organ harvesting.

    Political Background

The controversy emerged amid longstanding political disagreements between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio. In February 2025, the senator representing Kogi Central publicly accused the Senate leadership under Akpabio of marginalisation and unfair treatment.

Akpabio denied the claims. The conflict escalated, leading to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension from the Senate for six months. She later accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, an allegation he also denied.

The disagreements generated intense public exchanges in the media and on social platforms, deepening political tensions between both lawmakers.

    Legal Actions

Following the petition by Duru and the outcome of the police investigation, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation filed criminal defamation charges against Akpoti-Uduaghan at the Federal Capital Territory High Court on March 29, 2025.

The three-count charge was brought under Sections 391 and 392 of the Penal Code applicable in the Federal Capital Territory. Court documents indicated that the charges stemmed directly from the allegations made against the Senate president.

Police authorities stated that the case did not proceed to full trial after Akpabio opted to discontinue the prosecution. The Attorney-General subsequently applied for withdrawal of the charges in line with constitutional provisions.

    Police Commend Petitioner

In the concluding part of the report, the police commended Sandra Duru for reporting the allegation and cooperating with investigators. Authorities described her actions as patriotic and helpful in clarifying public controversy surrounding the matter.

The police noted that the investigation helped establish the truth of the Umoren murder case and corrected misinformation circulating in the public domain.

Efforts by our reporter to reach Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for comment were unsuccessful, as calls to her known telephone line did not connect.

Black Market Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today, Friday, February 6, 2026

The parallel market exchange rate between the United States dollar and the Nigerian naira held steady on Friday, February 6, 2026, as trading activities across major commercial centres showed minimal volatility. The informal market, commonly known as the black market, continued to operate at a premium above the official foreign exchange window.

Currency traders and Bureau De Change operators indicated that the dollar was exchanged at an average selling price of about ₦1,450 per dollar, while the buying rate hovered between ₦1,430 and ₦1,440 per dollar. These figures reflect a stable pattern compared with rates recorded earlier in the week.

Ejes Gist News reports that the gap between the official exchange market and the parallel market persists despite ongoing monetary policy adjustments by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Demand pressures from importers, students, and travelers continue to influence pricing in the informal segment.

At the official market, the naira traded at significantly lower levels, with rates within the range of ₦1,366 to ₦1,367 per dollar at the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market. The spread between both markets remains a key indicator of liquidity constraints and access to foreign currency.

Factors Influencing the Black Market Rate

Exchange rate movements in the parallel market are shaped by several variables, including:

    • Availability of foreign currency supply
    • Demand from importers and businesses
    • Diaspora remittances
    • Speculative trading activities
    • Monetary policy signals from the CBN

Dealers in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and other commercial hubs reported calm trading conditions, with no significant spikes in demand observed during the day.

Reference Rates for February 6, 2026

    • Selling Rate: Approximately ₦1,450 per US dollar
    • Buying Rate: Approximately ₦1,430 – ₦1,440 per US dollar

Market analysts note that the relatively narrow trading band suggests a period of temporary stability, although fluctuations remain possible depending on broader economic conditions.

    Important Notice to Forex Users

Black market exchange rates are not regulated and can differ based on location, transaction volume, and negotiation between buyers and sellers. Individuals and businesses engaging in foreign exchange transactions are advised to confirm prevailing rates directly with dealers before making financial commitments.

The foreign exchange market remains sensitive to policy changes and economic developments, making daily monitoring essential for accurate decision-making.

A local government official in Takum confirmed that dozens of bodies had been recovered and that emergency responders were struggling to cope with the scale of destruction. “This is one of the worst incidents we have seen in recent years,” the official said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

    Destruction of Worship Centers

Religious leaders in the area stated that at least 35 churches belonging to different denominations were vandalized or burned during the attack. Photographs shared by residents show damaged buildings, burnt pews, and ruined church property.

The Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria described the incident as a deliberate attempt to terrorize Christian communities. The group called on federal authorities to deploy additional security forces to prevent further violence.

    Security Response

Taraba State Police Command acknowledged receiving reports of an attack in Takum Local Government Area. In a brief statement, the command said officers had been dispatched to restore calm and begin investigations.

Military sources in the state also confirmed that troops were conducting patrols in affected communities. No arrests have been announced, and officials have not yet provided an independent casualty figure.

    Background of Regional Tensions

The Middle Belt region of Nigeria has experienced recurring conflicts for many years, often involving disputes over land, religion, and ethnic identity. Takum Local Government Area has been a flashpoint for violence between farming communities and armed groups.

Security analysts note that attacks on places of worship and mass civilian killings have become an increasing concern in parts of northern and central Nigeria. Human rights organizations have repeatedly urged the federal government to strengthen early warning systems and improve protection for vulnerable communities.

    Calls for Investigation

Local and national advocacy groups are demanding an independent investigation into the incident. Community leaders say survivors are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, medical care, and protection from further attacks.

As rescue and recovery operations continue, residents of Chanchanji and neighboring villages remain fearful of renewed violence. Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm while promising that those responsible will be brought to justice.

The full extent of casualties and damage is still being assessed as security agencies gather more information from the affected area.

EXCLUSIVE: Over 65% of Delta’s WAEC Candidates Risk Disqualification as New Commissioner’s Directive Sparks Crisis

    By Omagbemi Oghenetega

Thousands of secondary school students in Delta State face possible exclusion from the 2026 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examinations following a policy directive issued by the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Nze Ashibogwu.

Education officials and school administrators say the directive has disrupted the established process for clearing a large category of candidates classified as “external students,” a group that forms a significant proportion of WAEC applicants in the state.

Ejes Gist News reports that the order, introduced after the commissioner assumed office on January 16, 2026, centralized approval for candidate clearance and suspended the decentralized system previously managed through local education offices across the state.

Who Are Classified as External Students

Contrary to public perception, the category of external students does not refer only to private candidates writing WAEC independently. Education administrators confirm that the classification includes:

    • Students who transferred from one school to another during the enrollment period
    • Candidates who completed preliminary registration but delayed final enrollment due to financial constraints
    • Students added by schools to meet WAEC minimum candidate requirements

Principals estimate that these groups constitute more than 65 percent of candidates registered to write the 2026 WAEC examination in Delta State.

    Previous Enrollment Structure

For more than a decade, WAEC enrollment in Delta State followed a three-step administrative procedure.

Schools first presented candidates to the office of the Chief Inspector of Education (CIE) in their respective local government areas for initial verification. Approved lists were then forwarded to the State Exams and Standards Department for final clearance before schools proceeded to WAEC offices for payment and upload of candidates’ data.

Education stakeholders describe the process as orderly, predictable, and accessible to both public and private schools.

    Centralization Triggers Administrative Conflict

Multiple sources within the education system say the crisis began after disagreements emerged between officials of the State Exams and Standards Department and local government Chief Inspectors of Education over control of candidate clearance.

Following the dispute, the commissioner issued a directive requiring that all WAEC candidate approvals must originate directly from his office, with an explicit restriction on clearing external candidates.

The change has effectively halted the processing of thousands of students who had already completed biometrics and other preliminary requirements.

A school principal in Asaba, who requested anonymity due to fear of administrative reprisals, said the directive could have severe consequences.

“If this policy is not reversed immediately, more than 65 percent of our students will not be able to participate in the 2026 WAEC examination. Many have already paid fees and completed registration steps,” the principal said.

    Why Schools Enroll External Candidates

Administrators explain that the inclusion of external candidates has become a practical necessity for many schools.

According to them, additional candidates enable schools to:

    1. Meet WAEC’s minimum enrollment threshold and avoid penalties for low candidature
    2. Share logistical costs associated with processing documents in Asaba
    3. Offset mandatory administrative charges imposed by WAEC

Without the ability to enroll such candidates, many schools say they will be unable to meet financial obligations attached to WAEC registration.

    Parents Express Growing Anxiety

Parents and guardians across Delta State have expressed frustration over the uncertainty created by the directive.

Several parents interviewed confirmed that they had already paid various registration fees and were awaiting final clearance when the new policy was announced.

“We borrowed money to complete these payments. Now we are hearing our children may not write WAEC. This is devastating for families,” a parent in Ughelli said.

    Calls for Government Action

Education stakeholders, including school proprietors, civil society groups, and community leaders, are calling for urgent intervention by the Delta State Government to resolve the impasse.

Advocates warn that the directive could undermine the academic progression of an entire cohort of students if not reviewed promptly.

They are urging Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to convene an emergency meeting involving the Ministry of Secondary Education, WAEC officials, and representatives of school administrators to establish a transparent and workable clearance process.

    Silence From the Ministry

As of publication, the Ministry of Secondary Education has not issued a formal statement explaining the directive or outlining an alternative pathway for affected candidates.

The absence of official clarification has intensified confusion within schools and heightened fears of mass disqualification.

    Race Against Registration Deadline

WAEC enrollment windows operate on fixed schedules, and administrators warn that the remaining time for processing candidates is limited.

Without an immediate policy adjustment or clear guidelines from the state government, thousands of students in Delta State could be denied access to the 2026 examination, one of the most important academic assessments in the country.

Education observers describe the situation as one of the most significant administrative challenges to confront the state’s secondary education system in recent years.

Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today, Thursday, February 5, 2026

Black Market Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today, Thursday, February 5, 2026

The dollar to naira exchange rate remained a major focus in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market on Thursday, February 5, 2026, as the local currency traded within mixed ranges across official and parallel market segments.

Currency dealers and financial market participants monitored movements closely following recent Central Bank of Nigeria policies aimed at stabilizing liquidity and improving price discovery.

Ejes Gist News reports that exchange rate activity reflected ongoing adjustments between demand pressures and available foreign currency supply.

    Official Market Performance

At the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, the naira traded at approximately ₦1,371 to the United States dollar during early trading hours. Market data indicated marginal improvement compared with rates recorded earlier in the week.

Financial institutions processing international transactions quoted figures within the ₦1,368 to ₦1,372 band, reflecting relative stability in the official segment.

Analysts attributed the steadier performance to recent interventions designed to deepen liquidity and reduce volatility in the banking system. The Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System continued to play a central role in determining daily official prices.

    Parallel Market Rates

In the parallel market, also known as the black market, the dollar sold at higher rates compared with the official window. Bureau de Change operators in major commercial hubs including Lagos and Abuja quoted the dollar between ₦1,450 and ₦1,465.

The gap between official and informal rates remained narrower than levels seen in previous months, suggesting moderate confidence among retail traders and end users.

Currency traders reported cautious demand from importers and travelers, while remittance inflows provided limited support to supply.

    Factors Influencing the Exchange Rate

Several economic variables continued to shape the dollar to naira exchange rate on February 5, 2026:

    • Central Bank foreign exchange management policies
    • Volume of dollar supply to commercial banks
    • Demand from importers and manufacturers
    • Diaspora remittance flows
    • Global movements in crude oil prices

Financial experts noted that the naira’s performance often responds to short-term liquidity conditions and broader macroeconomic trends.

    Market Outlook

Traders expect the exchange rate to remain sensitive to policy decisions and market fundamentals in the coming days. Improved foreign currency inflows could support further stability, while rising demand may exert renewed pressure on the naira.

The dollar to naira exchange rate on Thursday, February 5, 2026, underscored the continuing efforts to balance market forces and achieve sustainable currency stability across Nigeria’s foreign exchange system.

  • Nnamdi Kanu Appeals Life Sentence, Faults Trial Process, Says Bail Application Was Ignored

Nnamdi Kanu Appeals Life Sentence, Faults Trial Process, Says Bail Application Was Ignored

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has lodged a formal appeal challenging the life sentence imposed on him by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The appeal follows the November 20, 2025 judgment that convicted him on terrorism-related offences brought by the Federal Government.

Kanu filed a 22-ground notice of appeal in which he argued that the trial court committed multiple legal errors that resulted in a miscarriage of justice. Ejes Gist News reports that the IPOB leader personally signed the appeal documents, seeking to overturn both his conviction and sentence.

The appellant contended that Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the case, proceeded with the trial in disregard of unresolved legal issues that questioned the competence of the entire proceedings.

Also Read: From Prison to Global Recognition: Jailed IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu Granted US Citizenship

    Grounds of Appeal

Kanu’s legal challenge centers on what he described as fundamental procedural flaws in the conduct of his trial. He argued that the court failed to determine critical preliminary matters before proceeding to hear evidence and deliver judgment.

Among the key issues raised in the appeal are:

    • Failure to determine the legal impact of the disruption of his earlier trial process in 2017
    • Non-determination of pending preliminary objections challenging the court’s jurisdiction
    • Proceeding to judgment while his bail application remained unresolved
    • Imposition of sentence without granting him the right of allocutus
    • Delivery of what he termed an excessive and unlawful life sentence

    Operation Python Dance II Disruption

In the first ground of appeal, Kanu revisited the events surrounding the September 2017 military operation known as Operation Python Dance II. He told the appellate court that the operation, which took place at his residence in Afara-Ukwu, Abia State, disrupted his initial trial.

According to him, the invasion by security agents led to deaths, destruction of property, and the collapse of the earlier proceedings. He argued that the trial court was legally bound to determine how that disruption affected the competence of the case before proceeding further.

“The said operation resulted in deaths and destruction and triggered disruption of the earlier proceedings,” Kanu stated in his appeal papers.

He maintained that the trial court delivered judgment without resolving these foundational legal questions, a step he described as a grave procedural error.

    Pending Objections Ignored

Kanu further argued that Justice Omotosho erred by refusing to hear and determine his preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court.

“The Learned Trial Judge did not hear or determine the objection. The court proceeded with evidence and delivered judgment while the objection remained pending and undetermined,” he submitted.

Legal analysts note that jurisdictional objections are typically treated as threshold issues that must be resolved before a substantive trial can proceed.

    Bail Application Overlooked

Another major complaint in the appeal concerns Kanu’s pending bail application at the time of his conviction. He argued that the trial court proceeded to deliver judgment without first ruling on the application.

The appellant maintained that this omission undermined the fairness of the entire process and violated his constitutional rights.

    Sentencing Procedure Challenged

Kanu also faulted the sentencing process adopted by the trial court. He asserted that he was not given the opportunity to make an allocutus, which allows a convicted person to plead for leniency before sentencing.

“Upon conviction, the Appellant was not afforded the opportunity to address the court in mitigation (allocutus). Sentence was imposed without allocutus. The court did not consider relevant mitigation or sentencing factors,” he stated.

He described the life sentence handed down as disproportionate, excessive, and contrary to law.

Reliefs Sought from Court of Appeal

In his appeal, Kanu asked the Court of Appeal to nullify the entire judgment of the Federal High Court delivered in case number FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015.

Specifically, he requested the appellate court to grant the following reliefs:

    1. An order quashing his conviction on all counts
    2. An order setting aside the life sentence imposed by the trial court
    3. An order discharging and acquitting him of all charges

    Intention to Appear in Person

Kanu informed the appellate court of his desire to be physically present when the appeal is heard. He also indicated his intention to argue parts of the case himself.

“I desire to put my case and argument into writing and also adopt my argument orally in the court on the hearing of the appeal,” he stated.

The appeal sets the stage for a renewed legal battle over one of Nigeria’s most contentious criminal trials in recent years. The Court of Appeal is expected to determine whether the issues raised are sufficient to overturn the conviction and life sentence imposed by the lower court.

2027: Details Emerge as Kwankwaso Delays Defection to ADC Over Uncertainty Surrounding Obi’s Ticket

Kwankwaso Delays Defection to ADC Over Obi Ticket Uncertainty.

Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has postponed plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid concerns over the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Highly placed sources within the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the ADC confirmed that Kwankwaso’s proposed move was linked to a possible political alliance with former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi. The arrangement is said to be part of ongoing negotiations for a joint presidential ticket, reportedly being facilitated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Ejes Gist News reports that unresolved issues surrounding Obi’s chances of clinching the ADC presidential ticket have stalled the process.

An ADC official familiar with the discussions confirmed that talks between both sides were still ongoing but noted that no final agreement had been reached.

    Ongoing Negotiations

“We are closing in on Kwankwaso, and we will be happy to receive him,” the ADC official said. “Our committee and his met a few days ago, and they will meet again next week to take a strong decision and reach a conclusion. We are still engaging, though there are some unresolved issues.

Sources within Kwankwaso’s political camp disclosed that the major obstacle to the planned defection is uncertainty about whether Peter Obi would emerge as the ADC presidential candidate.

According to one source, northern political leaders and former President Obasanjo have been advising Kwankwaso to exercise caution.

“Kwankwaso is the bargaining strength for Peter Obi to secure the ADC presidential ticket, and that card must be carefully played,” the source said.

    Fear of Internal Power Struggles

The source further alleged that some influential figures loyal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were gaining ground within the ADC, creating fears that Obi could be sidelined during the party’s presidential primary.

“Currently, ADC leaders are mounting pressure on Kwankwaso to join the party. Of course, he is interested, but we don’t want to play into the hands of some people rooting for Atiku’s presidency who have almost taken over the party,” the source stated.

“The picture we are seeing is that Obi may have been lured into the party. The fear is that he will participate in the presidential primary, lose to Atiku, and then be persuaded to accept the vice-presidential slot.”

The source added that Kwankwaso’s camp believes political fairness demands that power should remain in the southern region beyond 2027.

“We believe the South should complete its eight years, and that is only possible through Peter Obi’s presidency. That arrangement leaves Kwankwaso in a strong position to contest in 2031,” the source said.

    Wider Consultations Ongoing

Another NNPP chieftain disclosed that Kwankwaso was still consulting widely with political stakeholders across the country before taking a final decision.

“RMK is still consulting, and until those consultations are concluded, nothing serious will happen. As it stands, Kwankwaso is Obi’s strongest bargaining chip for the ADC ticket,” the source explained.

“Yes, the two committees met recently in Abuja and agreed to meet again. By next week, we should have a clearer position.”

    Party Spokespersons Decline Comment

When contacted, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, declined to speak on the matter, saying he was not part of the negotiation committee.

“I am not part of any committee speaking with Kwankwaso, so I do not have details on what you are referring to,” Abdullahi said.

Similarly, the National Publicity Secretary of the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, stated that he had no official information on the development.

“I am not in possession of any useful information on the issue, so I may not be able to comment,” Johnson said.

    Political Implications

The unfolding negotiations highlight the complex realignments shaping the race toward the 2027 presidential election. Political analysts observe that any alliance between Kwankwaso and Obi could significantly alter the electoral dynamics, particularly in northern and southeastern Nigeria.

However, with key issues still unresolved and consultations ongoing, Kwankwaso’s planned defection to the ADC remains uncertain.

Nigeria Coup Plot: Full List of Ammunition, Vehicles Recovered From Suspects

A detailed account has emerged outlining weapons, vehicles, and cash allegedly recovered from military officers and civilians accused of plotting to overthrow the Nigerian government in 2025.

Security investigations led by an inter-agency panel headed by Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Undiandeye, have concluded with extensive findings on the scope and organisation of the foiled coup attempt. Officials described the plot as a coordinated scheme involving reconnaissance, logistics, propaganda, and targeted funding.

Ejes Gist News reports that multiple security sources confirmed the recovery of sophisticated arms and equipment from suspects, including a lieutenant colonel attached to the Nigerian Army’s 130 Battalion.

    Weapons and Ammunition Recovered

Investigators reportedly seized a wide range of military-grade weapons from suspects linked to the alleged conspiracy. Items recovered include:

    • Two gun trucks
    • Anti-aircraft (AA) guns
    • PKT machine guns
    • Rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) bombs
    • AK-47 assault rifles
    • Large quantities of assorted ammunition
    • Tactical military gear

Security officials described the cache as evidence of an advanced and potentially violent operation aimed at destabilising the country.

Vehicles Allegedly Used for Covert Operations

According to investigators, several vehicles were procured and deployed to facilitate discreet movement and surveillance activities.

    Recovered vehicles reportedly include:

    • Four Toyota Hilux trucks
    • One Toyota Prado SUV
    • Two Toyota saloon cars
    • Thirty-two Volkswagen Golf cars

Sources said the vehicles were used to conduct reconnaissance, transport operatives, and access sensitive locations without attracting attention.

“The cars were used to move operatives around without raising suspicion and to monitor strategic facilities,” a security source stated.

    Key Suspects Identified

The investigation named a retired major general, identified as Adamu, as a central figure in the alleged network. He is reported to be at large alongside three other suspects.

One fleeing suspect was reportedly traced to an unnamed country in South America. His exact location has not been publicly disclosed for security reasons.

Security agencies are said to be collaborating across borders to dismantle any remaining cells connected to the alleged plot.

    Planned Court-Martial

Authorities are awaiting presidential approval to formally convene a court-martial to prosecute implicated military personnel.

Initial reports indicated that 16 officers were arrested at the early stages of the investigation. Subsequent inquiries expanded the list.

“At least 25 military officers and personnel are expected to face trial in connection with the coup attempt,” a source familiar with the probe disclosed.

An unspecified number of civilians are also in detention. They are being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the State Security Service (SSS) over alleged roles in financing and coordinating the plot.

    Alleged Political Financing

Investigators have accused former Bayelsa State governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, of providing financial backing for the conspiracy.

Sources claimed that nearly ₦1 billion was allegedly transferred in tranches to accounts operated by a Bureau De Change operator to fund the plot.

    Planned Targets and Objectives

Security findings indicate that the alleged conspirators initially planned to strike on May 29, 2023, the inauguration day of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The plan was reportedly postponed due to insufficient funds and logistics and later revived in 2024.

Investigators alleged that the plotters marked several top government officials for assassination, including:

    • President Bola Tinubu
    • Vice President Kashim Shettima
    • Senate President Godswill Akpabio
    • Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas
    • Service chiefs
    • The Commander of the Guards Brigade

According to security sources, the objective was to eliminate the country’s political leadership simultaneously and install a military government.

The plot also allegedly involved plans to seize key national assets, including:

    • The Presidential Villa
    • Niger Barracks
    • Armed Forces of Nigeria Complex
    • Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja

“They intended to detain senior military officers and neutralise political leaders at the same time,” a source explained.

    Intelligence Infiltration Claims

Investigators further claimed that the conspirators relied on informants within the Presidential Villa and around targeted officials to monitor movements and plan attacks.

“They had people inside the Villa providing information. The ultimate goal was to eliminate the leadership at once,” one official stated.

    Defence Headquarters Confirms Probe Completion

On Monday, the Defence Headquarters announced that investigations had been concluded and forwarded to the appropriate authorities in line with military regulations.

The military said findings identified several officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, describing such actions as incompatible with the ethics and professional standards of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The suspects were reportedly apprehended through a covert intelligence operation jointly coordinated by the Army Headquarters and the State Security Service.

Further judicial and disciplinary processes are expected to follow as authorities move toward formal prosecution of those implicated.

Ebonyi Governor Nwifuru Sacks Appointees, Dethrones Monarch After Deadly Community Attack

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has dismissed all political appointees, dissolved community leadership structures, and removed village heads in Amasiri community, Afikpo Local Government Area, following a violent attack in neighbouring Okporojo community, Oso Edda, that left at least four people dead.

The governor also withdrew the certificate of the traditional ruler of Amasiri, effectively dethroning him, as part of sweeping sanctions announced in response to the crisis.

Ejes Gist News reports that the decisive actions were declared on Saturday when Nwifuru paid an on-the-spot assessment visit to Okporojo community, where armed assailants reportedly invaded on January 29, 2026, killing residents and setting houses ablaze.

    Deadly Attack Triggers Government Action

The Okporojo incident was described by security sources as a coordinated assault carried out by unidentified gunmen. Witness accounts indicated that several homes were torched, while four victims were allegedly beheaded and their heads taken away.

The attack heightened long-standing tensions between communities in Edda and Afikpo local government areas, prompting urgent government intervention.

Visibly angered during his address to residents, community leaders, and security officials, Governor Nwifuru condemned the killings as brutal and unacceptable.

    Governor Announces Sweeping Sanctions

In a firm response, the governor announced the immediate dissolution of the Amasiri Town Development Union and all its executives.

“All government appointees from Amasiri, from the management committee down to the commissioner, are hereby sacked,” Nwifuru declared.

“All the village heads in all Amasiri villages in the autonomous communities are hereby removed. The traditional ruler certificate is withdrawn. For the time being, we will do more, and we will show everybody why we are government,” he added.

Among those affected by the directive is the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Amari Omaka (SAN), who hails from the area.

The governor ordered all dismissed officials to immediately return government properties, including official vehicles, to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

    Warning Against Retaliatory Violence

Addressing the residents of Okporojo, Nwifuru assured them that the state government would pursue justice for the victims and ensure the perpetrators face the full weight of the law.

He cautioned against reprisal attacks, warning that further violence would only deepen the crisis.

“I plead with all of you to maintain peace. At the end of the day, those that started the war will regret it,” the governor stated.

He emphasized that government actions would be firm but guided by the need to prevent further escalation.

    Long-Standing Dispute

Governor Nwifuru disclosed that the conflict between the communities had persisted for years despite several reconciliation efforts.

According to him, boundary agreements brokered in the past were not respected, allowing tensions to fester.

He said his visit to the troubled area was meant to send a strong signal that lawlessness and disregard for agreements would no longer be tolerated.

“This matter did not start today. We have held meetings, traced boundaries, and reached agreements. It is unfortunate that such understandings were not honoured,” he noted.

    Stern Message to Amasiri Community

The governor directed a pointed warning to leaders and residents of Amasiri, urging them to abandon violence and embrace dialogue.

“My message to the people of Amasiri is to have a rethink because violence will never lead them anywhere,” he said.

Nwifuru further disclosed reports that tensions were spreading to other communities, including Akpoha, where residents had reportedly blocked roads in fear of possible attacks.

He warned that continued provocations could push the situation beyond control.

    Commitment to Restoring Peace

Despite the severity of the crisis, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s determination to restore lasting peace in the affected areas.

He promised that government intervention would bring tangible improvements to Okporojo and other communities impacted by the violence.

“I want to assure the people of Okporojo autonomous community that the government of Ebonyi State will show the perpetrators what made them government. The lives lost will never be in vain,” Nwifuru stated.

    Security Response Intensifies

Security agencies present at the scene assured residents that investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Authorities increased patrols in the area to prevent further outbreaks of violence.

In a viral video circulating online after the incident, burning buildings and distressed residents were seen appealing for urgent government and security intervention.

The Ebonyi State Government has maintained that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure accountability and prevent a recurrence of the tragedy.
