Italy Foreign Minister reveals stance on sending troops to Ukraine

Italy Rules Out Sending Soldiers to Ukraine, Citing Escalation Concerns.

Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has confirmed that Italy will not deploy soldiers to Ukraine, emphasizing the potential risk of escalating the ongoing conflict.

In a statement, Tajani said, “We will not send any soldiers to fight in Ukraine.” He reiterated Italy’s commitment to supporting Ukraine politically, financially, and militarily, but clarified that this assistance would not include direct military involvement.

    Avoiding Escalation

Tajani expressed concerns about the dangers of escalation, accusing Russia of recruiting foreign fighters, including North Korean soldiers, Houthis, and Iranian proxies. He underlined Italy’s stance on preventing further intensification of the war while continuing to support Ukraine.

    Military Aid to Ukraine

Italy has consistently provided Ukraine with military aid, including anti-aircraft missiles, artillery systems, and armored vehicles. Recently, it was announced that Italy would supply Ukraine with SAMP/T air defense systems as part of a new aid package.

Tajani also reaffirmed that Italy’s position on the use of its supplied weaponry remains unchanged, underscoring the country’s commitment to aiding Ukraine within defined limits.

This position highlights Italy’s balancing act in supporting Ukraine while seeking to avoid actions that could exacerbate the conflict.

Suspending Wale Ajetunmobi Won’t Address Alarming Extra-Judicial Killings Confession – Human Rights Lawyer

Public Interest and Human Rights Lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has called for a thorough investigation into the confession of extra-judicial killings made by Wale Ajetunmobi, a media aide to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Ajetunmobi was recently suspended following his controversial statements regarding the arson attack on Television Continental (TVC) during the #EndSARS protests.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Effiong criticized the Lagos State Government’s response, emphasizing that suspending Ajetunmobi is insufficient to address the gravity of his claims.

    Effiong’s Statement

Effiong urged Governor Sanwo-Olu and law enforcement agencies to act decisively. He stated:

“Suspending Wale Ajetunmobi as your aide does not address the alarming confession of extra-judicial killings made by him. This matter has to be investigated thoroughly by law enforcement agencies. He should be taken into custody immediately.”

Effiong highlighted Ajetunmobi’s admission that individuals accused of burning down TVC were “hunted and executed.” He called on TVC, as a media organization, to demand a full investigation into the claims.

EndSARS: TVC Arsonists ‘Hunted and Executed’ – Sanwo-Olu’s Aide Confesses to Extra-Judicial Killings

    Demands for Transparency

The lawyer raised critical questions regarding the fate of suspects allegedly involved in the arson:

    • Who were the suspects arrested for the TVC attack?
    • Were charges filed against them?
    • What led to their purported execution without trial?

Effiong expressed concern about the absence of accountability and condemned the notion of individuals acting as “executioners” outside the judiciary’s authority.

Lagos Governor Suspends Aide Over Confession of Extra-Judicial Killings During EndSARS Protests

    Public Outcry and Legal Ramifications

The revelation has sparked outrage, with calls for the Lagos State Government and Police Command to disclose the circumstances surrounding the alleged extra-judicial killings. Effiong stressed the importance of adhering to constitutional processes, noting that the judiciary is the only institution empowered to determine guilt in criminal cases.

    Background

Ajetunmobi’s controversial remarks have raised fresh questions about government involvement in post-#EndSARS violence.

His statements suggest that suspects involved in the arson attack on TVC were tracked and killed, though no official records of arrests or prosecutions have been disclosed.

The Lagos State Government has yet to issue a detailed response.

Lagos Governor Suspends Aide Over Confession of Extra-Judicial Killings During EndSARS Protests

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has suspended his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Wale Ajetunmobi, who confessed to extra-judicial killings regarding the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Ajetunmobi claimed that individuals involved in the arson attack on Television Continental (TVC) during the protests were “hunted down and executed“.

In a post on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account, Ajetunmobi stated that the majority of the arsonists had been hunted and executed, hinting at possessing more information than he was willing to share. This statement has sparked outrage and raised concerns about extra-judicial killings.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration quickly distanced itself from Ajetunmobi’s remarks, emphasizing that it does not condone any form of extra-judicial punishment.

The governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, reiterated the administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and fairness.

Ejes Gist News reports that the suspension of Ajetunmobi highlights the sensitivity and ongoing controversy surrounding the #EndSARS protests and the actions taken by authorities in response to the 2020 Protest.

EndSARS: TVC Arsonists ‘Hunted and Executed’ – Sanwo-Olu’s Aide Confesses to Extra-Judicial Killings

Wale Ajetunmobi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has made shocking claims regarding the arson at Television Continental (TVC) during the #EndSARS protests in 2020.

Pay Attention To: Bunmi Oshonaike Is Seyi Tinubu’s Biological Mother, Not Senator Oluremi Tinubu

According to Ajetunmobi, most of the perpetrators were “hunted and executed.”

In a post shared on X, Ajetunmobi alluded to detailed knowledge of events surrounding the attack on TVC, stating that the full story, including “gory clips and images,” will eventually be revealed. He added, “One thing to note: the majority of them have been hunted down and executed.”

Sanwo-Olu’s aide says many arsonists ‘hunted and executed’

    No Clarity on Execution Claims

Ajetunmobi did not specify who was responsible for the alleged hunting and executions, leaving his statements open to interpretation. He cited an instance involving a young boy from Ketu, reportedly found with an AK-47 at the scene, further claiming neighbors were shocked at his involvement.

When PREMIUM TIMES attempted to clarify his statements, calls and messages to Ajetunmobi went unanswered. However, in response to a query on X about possible extra-judicial killings, he stated that some arsonists were killed in exchanges of gunfire with soldiers, while others fled. “Is that an extra-judicial killing to you?” he retorted.

    Timeline Contradictions

Observers noted contradictions in Ajetunmobi’s narrative. His initial post implied the alleged executions occurred after the TVC attack, but he later suggested that some deaths occurred during the attack in clashes with soldiers.

It is worth noting that no reports of exchanges of gunfire between arsonists and security forces were documented on October 21, 2020—the day of the TVC attack. Instead, the only major clash involving soldiers and protesters occurred a day earlier, on October 20, 2020, at the Lekki toll gate.

Background: #EndSARS Protests and TVC Attack

The #EndSARS movement, a youth-led protest against police brutality, culminated in nationwide demonstrations in October 2020. SARS, the controversial police unit, was accused of extrajudicial killings, harassment, and extortion. The protests called for its disbandment and broader police reforms.

In Lagos, the initially peaceful protests were hijacked by hoodlums who orchestrated jailbreaks, looted warehouses, and targeted government and private properties. On October 21, 2020, arsonists attacked TVC headquarters in Ikosi-Ketu, Lagos, believed by many to be associated with President Bola Tinubu. Vehicles were set ablaze, and the building was extensively damaged, though no casualties were recorded.

    Fallout and Government Response

In response to the chaos, Governor Sanwo-Olu imposed a 24-hour curfew and deployed security forces, including soldiers, to restore order. The Lagos State government has since spent substantial funds repairing damaged properties and compensating victims of the unrest.

Ejes Gist News understands that the latest comments by Ajetunmobi have reignited debates about accountability and transparency in the handling of the 2020 #EndSARS protests and the subsequent violence. Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong has called for a comprehensive investigation into his claims.

Why Nigerians Are Poorer Despite GDP Growth – Economists Explain

Despite Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growing by 3.46% in the third quarter of 2024, many Nigerians continue to experience economic hardship. Economists have weighed in on the disconnect between the country’s rising GDP and the persistent poverty faced by citizens.

Prominent figures such as Prof. Segun Ajibola, former President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Muda Yusuf, Executive Director of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, and Idakolo Gbolade, CEO of SD & D Capital Management, shared their insights in separate interviews with DAILY POST on Monday.

    Nigeria’s GDP Growth: An Overview

According to the Statistician-General of the Federation, Adeyemi Adeniran Adedeji, Nigeria’s economy expanded by 3.49% in Q3 2024, up from 3.19% in Q2 2024. The services sector contributed significantly to this growth, with a 5.19% increase and accounting for 53.58% of the total GDP. Key sectors driving growth included telecommunications, agriculture, transportation, and construction.

The oil sector’s contribution was limited, at 5.57%, while the non-oil sector dominated the economy, contributing 94.43% to GDP with a growth rate of 3.37%.

GDP Growth Not Reflecting Citizens’ Reality

Despite the positive figures, many Nigerians feel no improvement in their living standards. High inflation, particularly food inflation, which soared to 39.16% in October, continues to erode the purchasing power of the population.

    Structural Imbalances and Distributive Inequality

Prof. Ajibola noted that while macroeconomic indicators such as GDP growth are essential, they do not directly translate into improved welfare for the people. He pointed to the historical trend where, despite positive macroeconomic performance from the 1970s, inequality and inefficiencies in the distribution system have left the majority of Nigerians in poverty.

“The disconnect between macroeconomic indexes and the micro-welfare state of the citizenry explains why the benefits of economic growth often fail to trickle down to the masses,” he said. Ajibola emphasized the need for better mechanisms to ensure that economic gains reach all levels of society.

Sectoral Imbalances and Financial Sector Dominance

Dr. Muda Yusuf highlighted that while Nigeria’s Q3 GDP growth is a positive development, the dominance of the financial sector is concerning. The financial sector grew by over 30%, while the real sector, including agriculture and manufacturing, showed more modest growth. Yusuf called for a shift in focus towards more balanced sectoral development, emphasizing the importance of the real sector in creating sustainable jobs and diversifying the economy.

“The financial sector cannot continue to grow at such a pace while the real economy struggles. We need to rebalance the sectors to achieve more sustainable growth,” Yusuf said.

    Unemployment and Economic Disconnect

Idakolo Gbolade pointed out that the official GDP and unemployment figures do not reflect the true economic situation in Nigeria. He argued that the continued depreciation of the naira and persistent inflation undermine any potential benefits of GDP growth. Moreover, the drop in unemployment rates is not aligned with the reality on the ground, where many Nigerians face underemployment or no employment at all.

“The rising GDP doesn’t change the fact that people are struggling with higher prices and lower wages. Unemployment remains high, and many businesses are downsizing or relocating,” Gbolade noted.

    The Need for Structural Reforms

While Nigeria’s GDP growth is a positive sign on paper, experts argue that it does little to alleviate the widespread economic hardship. The key to improving the economic conditions of Nigerians lies in addressing structural imbalances, ensuring better wealth distribution, and strengthening the real sectors of the economy.

The government must refocus its efforts on creating inclusive economic policies that can bridge the gap between macroeconomic performance and citizens’ real-world experiences.

Over the past year, the Dollar to Naira exchange rate has experienced considerable volatility. In October 2023, the black market rate was approximately ₦900 per dollar. Since then, it has nearly doubled, driven by a combination of factors such as inflation, global oil price fluctuations, and foreign currency supply issues in Nigeria.

Why Nigerians Use the Black Market for Dollar Exchange

The black market, or parallel market, allows for easier access to foreign currency without government-imposed restrictions. Major reasons include:

    1. Favorable Rates: Higher exchange rates often mean more Naira for each Dollar exchanged.
    2. Accessibility: It is often simpler to access dollars in the black market than through formal banks, which may limit availability.

    1. Naira Devaluation and Inflation Crisis: Nigerian companies are facing severe challenges due to the foreign exchange crisis, exacerbated by the Bola Tinubu administration’s decision to liberalize the market in 2023 and remove petrol subsidies. The naira has devalued significantly from N460 per dollar in May 2023 to N1,690 per dollar currently. This has led to a sharp increase in operating expenses and inflation, which jumped from 22.41% in May 2023 to 33.88% in October 2024.
    2. CBN Intervention in Retail Forex Market: The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has intervened in the retail end of the foreign exchange market by selling $876.26 million to end users at N1,495 per dollar. This move aims to boost the stability of the naira and support the ailing currency.
    3. Banks’ Recapitalization Efforts: Nigerian banks have raised about N1.7 trillion from the capital market to meet the new recapitalization requirements set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This effort is expected to enhance financial stability and bolster investor confidence in the Nigerian economy.
    4. Forex Profit Margin Cap for BDCs: The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed Bureau De Change (BDC) operators to cap their forex profit margin at 1.5% to correct market distortions and ensure fair practices in the forex market.

Understanding the Difference Between Black Market and CBN Rates

Nigeria Would Be Better If Peter Obi Had Won 2023 Election – Senator Abaribe

Nigeria Would Be Better If Peter Obi Had Won 2023 Election.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has expressed his belief that Nigeria would have been in a more favorable state had Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, emerged victorious in the 2023 election. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, the lawmaker highlighted several areas where he feels the current administration under President Bola Tinubu falls short.

Bunmi Oshonaike Is Seyi Tinubu’s Biological Mother, Not Senator Oluremi Tinubu

According to Abaribe, nepotism, which he claims thrives under President Tinubu, would have been absent under Peter Obi’s leadership. “If Peter Obi had won, you probably would have seen a better Nigeria than what we are seeing today. He would not be as nepotistic as this government,” Abaribe stated.

The Senator criticized Tinubu’s appointment of four ministers from Ogun State, contrasting it with many states that have just one. He added that nepotism, which was present under former President Buhari, has worsened under Tinubu’s administration.

US Official Slams Finland Over Simon Ekpa’s Arrest, Criticizes Tinubu Government

Abaribe argued that instead of relying on fairness from successive governments, the South-East must focus on self-development to build a better and more cohesive region.

    On Simon Ekpa’s Arrest
Abaribe welcomed the recent arrest of Simon Ekpa, the Finland-based self-acclaimed Biafran Prime Minister in exile, stating it sends a clear message to instigators of violence in the South-East. He noted that Igbo communities have consistently opposed the actions of Ekpa and his associates, which they believe harm the region’s stability.

The Senator also emphasized that releasing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), could significantly reduce violence in the South-East, arguing that many perpetrators use Kanu’s name as justification for their actions.

Abaribe’s comments continue to fuel discussions about Nigeria’s political climate, the challenges of regional marginalization, and the steps necessary for national progress.

  • Bunmi Oshonaike Is Seyi Tinubu’s Biological Mother, Not Senator Oluremi Tinubu

Bunmi Oshonaike Is Seyi Tinubu’s Biological Mother, Not Senator Oluremi Tinubu

Seyi Tinubu’s Biological Mother is Bunmi Oshonaike.

Claim: Seyi Tinubu’s biological mother is Bunmi Oshonaike, not Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as incorrectly displayed in some Google search results.

    Findings

Seyi Tinubu, the son of Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is often inaccurately portrayed in online search results as the biological son of Senator Oluremi Tinubu. However, reliable sources and historical records clarify that Seyi Tinubu’s biological mother is Bunmi Oshonaike, a former air hostess.

Bunmi Oshonaike was married to Bola Tinubu before his current wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The marriage produced Seyi Tinubu before the union dissolved. Subsequently, Bola Tinubu married Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who became Seyi’s stepmother. While Oluremi Tinubu plays a prominent role in Seyi’s life, particularly given her public profile, she is not his biological mother.

Google’s algorithm appears to misrepresent this fact by linking Seyi Tinubu to Senator Oluremi Tinubu, likely due to her high visibility as the First Lady and long-standing senator. This highlights the need for better contextual accuracy in automated search results to prevent the spread of misinformation.

    Final Verdict.

The claim is true: Seyi Tinubu’s biological mother is Bunmi Oshonaike, not Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

    Who is Bunmi Oshonaike?

Bunmi Oshonaike, a former air hostess with the defunct Nigeria Airways, is the biological mother of Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This fact clarifies the common misconception that Senator Oluremi Tinubu is Seyi Tinubu’s mother. Nigerians are widely aware of this distinction.

Seyi Tinubu has celebrated his biological mother’s birthday publicly, including publishing tributes in national newspapers since 2022, further affirming her role as his mother.

Her ethnicity is Yoruba, originating from the southwestern region of Nigeria. Although unconfirmed sources suggest that she hails from Lagos State, there are no detailed accounts of her biography available online.

Bunmi is 65 years old as of 2024. This calculation is based on her 60th birthday, which was celebrated and published by THISDAY Newspaper on November 11, 2019. This publication confirms her birth year, making her age 65 in 2024.

US Official Slams Finland Over Simon Ekpa’s Arrest, Criticizes Tinubu Government

A former United States government official has condemned Finland following the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based activist and leader of the Biafran independence movement.

Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official, criticized Finland in an article published on the American Enterprise Institute website.

Tinubu Government’s Extradition Efforts for Simon Ekpa Face Major Hurdle

He accused the Nordic country of undermining its global reputation as a defender of human rights by detaining Ekpa based on what he described as “spurious charges” from the Nigerian government.

Ekpa, who identifies as the prime minister-in-exile of Biafra, was arrested last week over allegations of inciting violence in southeastern Nigeria through his pro-Biafran activism. Finnish authorities defended the arrest, stating that they are committed to addressing issues of violence linked to individuals operating within their jurisdiction.

However, Rubin argued that Finland’s actions inadvertently supported Nigeria’s alleged repression of the Igbo people and other marginalized groups advocating for self-determination. He emphasized, “This is not just about Simon Ekpa. It’s about Finland allowing its judicial system to be weaponized by regimes with questionable human rights records.”

Growing Controversy over the arrest of Simon Ekpa.

The arrest has sparked widespread reactions, with supporters of Simon Ekpa calling for his immediate release. Pro-Biafran activists argue that his detention is a direct attack on their movement for independence and self-determination.

Ekpa’s followers have urged international organizations to intervene, calling on human rights bodies to ensure justice is served. They maintain that their push for Biafran independence will continue undeterred.

PDP Chairman Damagum Bows to Pressure, Writes INEC to Organize Bye-Elections to Replace 27 Defected Rivers Lawmakers

Umar Damagun, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize bye-elections for 27 state constituencies in Rivers State.

This request follows the recent defection of lawmakers from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tinubu Government’s Extradition Efforts for Simon Ekpa Face Major Hurdle

In a letter dated November 13, 2024, Damagun urged INEC to declare these seats vacant and proceed with fresh elections. He cited Section 109 (1)(g) of the Nigerian Constitution, which states that a lawmaker loses their seat if they switch parties without legitimate grounds.

According to Damagun, these lawmakers had no lawful reason, such as an internal party division or merger, for their move to the APC. Therefore, their departure from the PDP nullifies their positions and requires new elections.

Damagun highlighted the importance of upholding democratic principles and respecting the Constitution.

He argued that by leaving the PDP, these lawmakers forfeited their right to their seats and must seek a renewed mandate from voters if they wish to return to the House of Assembly under a different party.

The contents of Damagun’s letter were shared with the public by Ikenga Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the Opposition Lawmakers Coalition, during a press conference in Akokwa, Imo State.

Ugochinyere emphasized the PDP’s stance on the issue, noting that the party would pursue all legal avenues to ensure compliance with the Constitution and prevent what it views as an unauthorized occupation of legislative seats.

Sani Fagge Reveals Influential Cabals Misleading President Tinubu.

In a recent revelation, Kamilu Sani Fagge, a political scientist and professor at Bayero University, Kano, has highlighted the significant influence of cabals within President Bola Tinubu‘s administration. According to Fagge, these powerful groups are shielding the President from the public and heavily influencing government policies and decisions.

Speaking to Daily Trust, Fagge explained that while cabals, often referred to as kitchen cabinets or deep state members, exist globally, their interference in Nigeria’s governance is particularly pronounced. He noted that such groups rarely meddle in the day-to-day operations of governments elsewhere as they do in Nigeria.

Tinubu Government’s Extradition Efforts for Simon Ekpa Face Major Hurdle

Fagge drew parallels with past administrations, pointing out that similar cabals were active during the tenures of former Presidents Umar Musa Yaradua and Muhammadu Buhari. He emphasized that the current cabals are composed of individuals close to President Tinubu, including personal acquaintances, family members, and former political allies.

“In many countries, there are formal and informal groups that influence the president, known as inner or kitchen cabinets. These confidants are usually very loyal and exert significant influence on presidential policies,” Fagge said. “Additionally, there is the concept of a deep state—a group of influential individuals close to the government.”

He further explained that in other countries, these groups are often formally recognized and appointed to positions of influence. However, in Nigeria, these cabals tend to shield the president from the public, dictating public policies and isolating the president from the electorate.

Fagge recalled instances from Nigeria’s history, such as during Yaradua’s illness when powerful individuals concealed the true situation from the public, and during Buhari’s tenure when a cabal directed state policies, sometimes bypassing constitutionally recognized institutions.

Tinubu Government’s Extradition Efforts for Simon Ekpa Face Major Hurdle

The Nigerian government’s attempt to extradite pro-Biafra activist Simon Ekpa from Finland to face terrorism charges has encountered significant obstacles.

Ejes Gist News reports that the Finnish legal restrictions are likely to impede

    the process.

Simon Ekpa, who claims to be the prime minister of the Biafra Government In Exile (BRIGE), was arrested along with four others by Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities. Finnish police suspect Ekpa of contributing to violence and crimes against civilians in southeastern Nigeria.

Despite Nigeria’s defence chief, General Christopher Musa, expressing the country’s intention to push for Ekpa’s extradition, Finland has clarified that its laws prohibit the extradition of nationals outside the European Union or Nordic countries. This legal framework complicates Nigeria’s request, as there is no existing extradition treaty between the two nations.

Reports indicate that Finnish legislation, which strongly protects freedom of speech, must be adhered to. Lagos-based lawyer Festus Ogun emphasized the importance of an extradition treaty, stating that without one, there is no legal basis for Ekpa’s extradition.

Former British Police Officer and National Security Risk Strategist Vince Onyekwelu noted on Arise TV that while Finnish authorities have the right to arrest Ekpa, the absence of an extradition treaty makes his transfer to Nigeria unlikely. The court will ultimately decide on the extradition request, but the current legal constraints present a formidable challenge.
