  • Atiku Returns To Nigeria For PDP NEC Meeting

Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has returned to the country.

The Former Vice President who had been out of the country for weeks, returned to Abuja in the early hours of today, Tuesday.

According to Leadership, Atiku returned to the country to attend the much-anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku, who is regarded as the de-facto leader of the party, being the presidential candidate in the last elections, is expected to spearhead other meetings ahead of the NEC meeting.

Recall that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP had fixed the NEC meeting for April 18, having refused to hold the meeting for over one year.

The NEC, the second most influential decision-making organ of the party after the NWC, is expected to meet every quarter as stipulated by the party’s constitution.

The NEC meeting is anticipated to tackle several pressing issues that have hindered the party’s unity and progress since the 2023 general elections.

Top of the agenda is the resolution of persistent internal discord, consideration of disciplinary measures for members engaged in anti-party activities, and deliberations on the leadership dynamics within the party.

Speculation is rife that the NEC will address grievances, including the actions of certain members, like the FCT Minister, who openly declared non-support for Atiku in the elections, which has sparked calls for accountability.

Bandits Disrupt Tahajjud Prayers, Abduct Dozens of Worshipers in Zamfara Mosque.

Dozens of worshipers were abducted during a brazen attack by bandits on a mosque in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred as Muslim faithful were observing the congregational Tahajjud prayers, a special prayer observed during the last 10 days of Ramadan.

The assailants struck the town around 2 a.m., disrupting the peaceful prayers and instilling fear and chaos among the worshipers. Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, shared details of the incident on X platform, highlighting the audacity of the terrorists’ actions.

“In the early morning of Tuesday at about 0200hr, bandits sneaked into Gusau Town and abducted several worshippers in a Mosque while they were observing tahajjud (midnight) prayers,” Makama reported.

The attack underscores the persistent security challenges facing Zamfara State and the broader region, where banditry and other forms of criminality have plagued communities, leading to loss of lives and displacement of residents.

Why I No Longer Have Smooth Relationship With Odili — Wike

Wike Addresses Rift with Odili: Political Differences Emerge

Former Rivers State governor and current FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, has broken his silence on the reported disagreement between him and his political mentor, Peter Odili, shedding light on the strained relationship during a media interaction in Abuja on Tuesday.

Wike, who served as governor of Rivers State from May 2015 to May 2023 before assuming his ministerial role, acknowledged that his once-close relationship with Odili has soured due to political variances.

Breaking News: Deputy Police Commissioner Reportedly Commits Suicide in Oyo, Nigeria

While Wike had previously regarded Odili, who governed Rivers State from May 1999 to May 2007, as his political father and leader, he admitted that their current association is no longer harmonious.

“As it is today, politically we don’t have good relationship. We don’t work [together] today,” Wike disclosed to journalists, hinting at the apparent discord between them.

Pressed for clarification on the root cause of the strained ties, Wike cited “some political differences” without delving into specifics.

However, observers speculate that the friction could stem from recent political developments in Rivers State, particularly the reported impeachment threats against incumbent Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the state House of Assembly.

Notably, Wike’s gesture of gifting Odili a lavish mansion for his 74th birthday in August 2022 had underscored the former governor’s significance in his political journey. At the time, Wike had praised Odili’s resilience amidst adversity, emphasizing his invaluable role as a mentor and guide.

“There was a time every political class abandoned Dr. Odili. This is a man who gave us everything. Some people called him Mr. Donatus. There was no abuse he did not get. Everybody he tried to help their families, at the end of the day, all betrayed him,” Wike remarked during Odili’s birthday celebration.

Despite the apparent discord, Wike’s acknowledgment of Odili’s influence and contributions to his political career reflects the complexities of political relationships and the evolution of alliances over time.

As Wike navigates the intricacies of political dynamics, his remarks offer insight into the shifting landscapes of power and influence within Nigeria’s political arena.

  • Ogun To Conduct Multidimensional Human Development Index Survey

Ogun To Conduct Multidimensional Human Development Index Survey

The Ogun State Government is to conduct household surveys to develop a framework that will assist in planning, management, and evaluation of the multi-dimensional poverty human development index.

The survey is expected to go one step further than the NBS’ Multi-dimensional pverty index. The survey will allow the government of Prince Dapo Abiodun to assess the impact of the various policies it has been implementing in the last four and half years in such areas as education, health, job creation, empowerment and other social interventions.

Already, a consultant, E-services Nigeria Limited, has been contracted by the state government to carry out the survey for a 27-week period. The General Household Survey will produce indicators needed for the design and monitoring of the implementation of various State Development Plans (SDPs).

The consultant commenced work on 6 March. They are to work in liason with the Ogun State Bureau of Statistics.

According to the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Olaolu Olabimtan, the survey will enable the state government to properly establish baselines on different data points in the state and allow for the implementation of the various strategies already earmarked for execution.

“This is in line with the “Building Our Future Together” mantra of the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration, which over the years have executed and implemented various strategies cutting across the ISEYA development agenda.

“In the past five years, under the pillar of infrastructure, our administration has brought development to every ward in the 20 local government areas of the state. We have constructed, reconstructed, and rehabilitated over 500 kilometers of roads across all regions in the state in line with the admnistration’s policy of inclusiveness and determination to abolish erstwhile practices of prior administrations of developing one section of the state at the expense of other sections.

“Similarly, in the energy sector, the administration has installed over 500 transformers across communities through its Community Electrification Project and has improved power supply in the 20 local government areas.

“We have also provided solar street lights, solar boreholes for potable water, and the distribution of solar home kits to rural dwellers.

“The administration has also rehabilitated the Arakanga Waterworks in Abeokuta to ensure a reliable supply of potable water and constructed new water storage facilities as well as expanded the water supply and reticulation network to many streets and neighborhoods in the city of Abeokuta. These completed projects, which are already in use and being enjoyed by residents, will soon be formally commissioned.

“We are currently at the planning stage of expanding the reticulation network into new areas within the state while rehabilitating all our Mini Water Works in othe parts of the state for improved water supply for our people.

“Ogun State is leading the pack in energy transition as we are on record as the first state to deploy Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses in Nigeria and have deployed them in Abeokuta and Mowe/Ibafo to Lagos routes with the aim to cushion the effects of transport fares for our citizens and facilitate movement of people and goods from the rural to urban and vice versa for increased livelihoods for our people,” he said.

The commissioner also spoke on the Gateway Agro-Cargo International Airport, which, along with its allied businesses in the aerotropolis, are expected to generate over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs.

He also noted the government’s investments in automating business processes to improve efficiency and the Ease of Doing Business Index in the state.

The commissioner said education and human capital development remain key priorities of the government with the renovation and construction of over 1,200 classrooms and buildings across all 234 wards in the state, together with over 50,000 new desks and chairs, provision of learning materials, and the implementation of the OgunDigiClass initiative, which utilizes technology for virtual learning.

Olabimtan spoke on efforts to address the shortage of teachers in public schools, with the recruitment of 5,000 teaching interns under the OGUNTEACH program and the recent conversion of 1,000 teachers from the program for permanent employment.

In the same vein, the commissioner noted that the Abiodun-led administration launched the Ogun Job Portal in 2019, which has enabled the government to match thousands of applicants with employment opportunities in the various sectors of the economy.

The government has also rehabilitated, equipped, and staffed 100 primary healthcare centres across the state to provide quality heathcate to the people, he said.

“We’ve implemented programmes to boost the status of women by including them in politics, governance, and economic activities, as well as providing education for girls.

“Through the Oko’wo Dapo Women’s Empowerment scheme, over 50,000 women have grown their businesses, and with additional funding from the Federal Government’s Nigeria for Women Project, the total investment in women’s empowerment now stands at about N1.5 billion,” he said.

In the area of provision of shelter, Olabimtan said the construction of 4,000 housing units, amongst others, are some interventions that the government believes should filter down to improve the living standards of the people of the state.

In addition, government, this year alone, started the construction of 200 units of high-end duplexes at PMB Estate, Kobape through a PPP programme, commenced development of Ibara and Idi Aba GRA Regeneration Schemes, commenced the construction of 200 units of Affordable Housing in Gateway Aviation Village, Iperu, commenced the construction of 250 units of Affordable Housing in Kobape Phase 3 and the construction of 100 units of mixed Housing units at OPIC Estate, Warewa, Isheri

A recent report by BudgIT ranked Ogun State in the 7th position in the 2023 overall Fiscal Performance Ranking and 1st in most improved in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) among the 36 states and the FCT.

This affirms the position of the state as the investment destination of choice as well as one of the most resilient states.

“We will continue in our drive towards attracting investors by providing the most business-friendly environment through well-thought-out policies assisted and driven by technology,” Olabimtan said.

•Notes leader from Okoloba led the Army to Okuama

•Reveals the conspiracies, what transpired on March 14

•Allow Okuama to bury their dead – Residents

A leader of the Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, (names withheld), has opened up on what led to the killing of 17 soldiers, and a yet-to-be-ascertained number of natives in the community on March 14.

He explained that a leader from Okoloba in Bomadi Local Government Area, embroiled in a land dispute with Okuama, was the person who led soldiers to the community to fight a personal agenda on the fateful day.

The Okuama leader, who spoke exclusively to Vanguard, yesterday, also cleared the air on the Bayelsa–based militant leader, Amagbein, whose Defence Headquarters, DHQ, Abuja, published his photo on its wanted list, saying he was not from Okuama, and not in any way connected to the community.

    His explanation

“That very day when the Army came, people had gone to the farm, including the community Chairman. They called him from the farm, notifying him that visitors wanted to meet the leadership. They welcomed them at the town hall; the community inquired what their mission was.

“They told our people they came in respect of a kidnapping complaint by an Ijaw leader and Okoloba people, and that they want to search the community. So they allowed it because we knew there was nothing like that.
“After searching, they came back to the town hall; they found nothing, but insisted that they want to go with the community Chairman, Secretary, and other leaders. The people refused, saying you said you came for peace talks and searched. Now, you want to go with our people.

“The people were wary of their agenda, and this brought argument, and the army opened fire and started shooting, people started running, and our people were not prepared for it, talk of fighting soldiers. In that process, they killed several people, we have some photographs, as the issue was raging and the army, after shooting, headed towards the waterside.

“Other speedboats, about three were seen coming towards the community, one of our youth captured one of the boats, and they came for full attack, and opened fire on both the soldiers and some Okuama people around the jetty. That is what led to the killing of the soldiers and our people.

“Our people they shot also fell into the water, up till now, we have not been able to record exactly how many are dead.
“The following day, the military reinforced again to Okuama; that Okuama killed Nigeria Army personnel, and that is what led them to burning of the community.

    Gang-up against Okuama

“We now see that this whole thing is a gang up against Okuama, it is a coup against us just to destroy the community, as I am talking to you, our people are completely in disarray, they are in the bush dying of hunger, starvation, and various sicknesses,

“Over 15 people have died, they do not have any place to go, and the army had taken over the community. They burnt and demolished the community with caterpillars.

To underscore this point, when our governor wanted to go there, they denied him access, the same thing they did to the Commissioner of Police. Therefore, we are crying to the world, the state government, and the federal government that the Nigerian Army is oppressing Okuama, they should come to our aid.

“If the army is not doing something terrible, they are supposed to show photographs, and video of the current state of the community for the world to see, so you can guess what is happening now.

“It is only Okuama people that are suffering now, Okoloba people are living well in their community, they are going to their farms, and the government is not doing anything about it.

“We feel this whole thing is a gang up between the Army and the Ijaw people against us. Only the federal government can call the Ijaw leader to order, he boasted of causing a problem we cannot solve, and today, what he boasted about has happened.

    Rift with the Okoloba leader

“Some time ago, we had an issue of boundary adjustment with Okoloba, there have been boundary issues between us for a long time, we then planted seven mango trees to demarcate the boundary.

“The Ijaw leader came and removed all the mango trees, saying that he wants to establish a school there. He then extended into Okuama land, Okuama people told him that if he had such a vision to establish a school that would be beneficial to us all, he should be able to consult with the community first.

“He refused, saying that wherever he ended the clearing shall be the boundary of Okuama. Okuama people refused and the matter went before the Divisional Police Officers, DPOs of Otu-Jeremi and Bomadi, and the Pere of Akugbene and some chiefs for adjudication.

“They visited the place and saw that he had encroached into our land, but they pleaded with us to take the boundary from there, being that the project will benefit all of us. Therefore, in their wisdom, they brought a caterpillar and graded the demarcation straight to the river.

“After that, the Okoloba leader still refused to let peace be, he went to the creek called Urhie-Ewu, owned by us, the Okuama Primary School is named Aderha Primary School because of the intersection of the creek and the River Niger inside the creek. Okuama has a small community called Edakure. We have a polling unit there to date.

“He kept disturbing us in the creek and the Pere of Akugbene called a meeting slated in Warri for both communities to discuss this recurring issue in January. A day before the date fixed for the meeting by the King, the Ijaw leader, and his boys, using boats, attacked four of our boys and killed them.

“There is one popular boy among them, his name is Igho, and he married an Okoloba lady and has a son. Villagers captured the attack on video when they confronted them at the jetty; took them away and killed them. People were shouting it was Igho, who married from Okoloba.

“Okuama did not react because the Okoloba leader is rich, he has boys, weapons, and connections and we cannot do anything to him, we are peasant farmers and fishermen, and we do not have any plan or intention of war with anyone.

“The Ijaw leader boasted to us that he would ensure that Okuama was wiped out from the surface of the earth, that he would do anything to ensure that he achieved this aim and that he would cause a problem that Okuama cannot solve. He killed those boys (four boys) on January 17; nobody saw their corpses to date.

“Our source said Igho and the three boys were shot, and put in a shallow grave, they turned fuel on them before burning and covering it. Because of that attack, our people did not attend the meeting fixed by the King on January 18.

We did not hire any militant leader, Amagbein not from Okuama

“Okuama has no connection to those who killed the soldiers; Okuama does not have anybody called Amagbein. As I said, Okuama was not ready for any fight as our people went to the farm that day, only a few people were around that day.

“Okuama does not know about that connection and Amagbein is not related to Okuama either from his mother or father’s side. Okuama did not hire anyone to help them fight, our neighbours are the ones, who have connections and oil money, and we are mere farmers. We do not have any big man, which is why you see they have turned everything against us.”

We have no business with Ewu king

The Okuama leader disclosed, “No king of Ewu Kingdom had Okuama before now, therefore, we do not have any say or support for whoever becomes the king until we are accepted before we can say we have a king.”

“However, we heard there was a crisis in the selection and the matter is still in court. We do not know whom the court will declare as king.”

Video clips of slain Okuama natives

One villager told Vanguard, “The number one name on the wanted list by the DHQ, Akevwru Daniel Omotegbono is from Okuama, but not “aka Amagbem” as portrayed by the army. Number 2, Prof Ekpekpo Arthur, president-general of Ewu Kingdom is from Okuama. Number 5 is the vice president of the Okuama community, while number seven is the Ewu monarch. The others are unknown to Okuama.”

Vanguard watched and sighted several videos and photographs of the attack, and abduction of the four Okuama boys allegedly by the boys of the Ijaw leader from Okoloba, and the boats used for the operation, in January, for the first time, yesterday.

Some Okuama villagers also made available to our reporters video clips of some natives purportedly killed by soldiers on March 14.

The military should allow Okuama to bury their dead

Okuama residents have enjoined the military to allow access to the community, so they could bury their dead allegedly felled by soldiers

A resident of Ughelli, Mr. Akpokiniovo Joseph, said: “The soldiers occupying the Okuama are Nigerians, they know how we attach concern to the proper burial of our dear ones since there were reports that about 50 persons from the community were killed.

“They should allow families into the community to identify their dead ones for burial. It is a traditional and religious demand in this part of the country, even the entire country. “

Madam Magdalene Emudianughe in Warri, said: “Even though remains of the deceased have been buried in secret graves or given mass burials in the community, residents should still be allowed in to mourn and bury their loved ones.

“We read in the papers that the military moved heavy-duty equipment into the community after they sealed up the place. If it was to clean up the community and bury in mass graves, they should still allow residents to bury their dead ones.

“These dead ones, according to media reports, were allegedly killed before the soldiers were murdered. So they were innocent, they had no hands in the death of the soldiers.’’

  • NASU, SSANU Threatens To Embark On Indefinite Strike

Non-teaching university staff have threatened to embark on an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries.

The aggrieved groups, including the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Allied Institutions (NASU), are protesting the non-payment of salaries that were withheld during their 2022 strike action.

The dispute centers around five and a half months of salaries that were withheld under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Although President Bola Tinubu, in October, ordered the payment of four months’ worth of salaries to university staff, reports indicate that only the teaching staff received their payments in February, leaving the non-teaching staff uncompensated.

The situation led to a warning strike by the non-teaching staff two weeks ago, aiming to pressure the government into fulfilling their payment demands.

According to the National President of NAAT, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, the House of Representatives has intervened in the matter, signalling political attention to the ongoing financial dispute.

He said, “We were invited last Wednesday by the House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education, representatives of the National Universities Commission NUC, the Committee of Vice Chancellors and others were there. Before our three-day warning strike, members gave the mandate that we should go on full blown strike.

“However, the committee pleaded with us that we should hold on. That they are now on recess and could do little. They pleaded that we give them the opportunity to reconvene after the recess and they would wade into the matter fully. In view of this, we want to give them the benefit of doubt and see what we happen between now and the end of April.”

The National President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, said, “Our members went on strike in March 2022 and it was over the refusal of the government to fulfill the 2009 Agreement we had with the government. The agreement was to be renegotiated every three years but that was not done. Over 15 years now, what we have been having is taking a step forward and taking two backwards. Government keeps tossing us from one committee to another.

“They are owing us five and a half months from that strike action, but they paid teaching staff four months withheld salaries and forgot others. The same attitude is what obtains when you have Earned Allowance to be paid. Some people would just arrogate to themselves the power to take whatever they like from the money and leave the crumbs for others.

”Those who set up the university system knew the importance of all workers, whether teaching or non-teaching, if not, a single person would have been saddled with responsibility of being the teacher, driver, technologist, accountant and so on.”

Speaking in the same vein, Comrade Ibrahim of SSANU, wondered why non-teaching staff are seen as not important in the system.

He said, “We were at a meeting late last year after the pronouncement by President Bola Tinubu that four months salaries would be paid and the Minister of Education was there and he gave the assurance that all would benefit, now the reverse is the case. We are not a strike happy union but we are being pushed to the wall. Between 2022 and now, we have lost over 100 members due to their inability to take care of themselves because of lack of fund.

“When they paid the teaching staff four months salaries, we wrote a protest letter to the government and the receipt of it was acknowledged, but could you believe it that this is the fifth week, we have not heard anything from the government.”

On what the unions would do after the suspension of the warning strike and the government not doing the needful, Ibrahim said the necessary organs would meet and the decision would be made public as soon as possible.

He said, “We have our own organs and the government have theirs. So, if our organs call for total and indefinite strike, which is one of the tools we use, the system would be shut down totally. Non-teaching staff are the ones in charge of power and water supply. They man security posts, if they all abandon such duties, let us see what would happen.”

Asked what would be the solution to the challenges facing tertiary institutions in the country, Ibrahim said government should just adequately fund the sector.

He said, “When education is funded adequately, the government would spend less on security, health and many vices would be reduced.”

  • Why Super Eagles Lost AFCON 2023 – OdumoduBlvck (Video)

Popular rapper, OdumoduBlvck has given reasons why the Super Eagles of Nigeria lost the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON title to Ivory Coast.

During a recent show, the rapper expressed his belief that Nigeria’s loss in the AFCON title was not meant to be. He firmly stands by the notion of ‘Que Sera Sera’, indicating that fate was not in favor of the Giants of Africa.

OdumoduBlvck pointed out Ivorian and Dortmund player Sebastian Haller, who played a significant role in Ivory Coast’s journey in the AFCON 2023 tournament.

He stated that the entire tournament seemed destined to honor and celebrate Haller who battled testicular cancer in 2022 and made a successful return to professional football in January 2023.

Haller scored the decisive goal for Ivory Coast in the AFCON 2023 final against Nigeria, securing Ivory Coast’s third AFCON title.

OdumoduBlvck views this outcome as a reflection of fate and a way for the universe to acknowledge Sebastian Haller’s triumph over cancer.

“The reason Nigeria lost the cup is because we were never meant to win it. There’s a player called Sebastine Haller for Ivory Coast, he suffered testicular cancer, he played nothing in that match but he was the one that scored the winning goal,
    ” he said in part.
