Breaking: Oil marketers peg petrol at N1,200 per litre Amid Subsidy Hardship

Fuel marketers and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited clash over subsidy removal.

In a dramatic turn of events, fuel marketers, represented by the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, have suggested a startling increase in the price of petrol to N1,200 per litre, attributing it to the rising subsidy amid economic challenges.

This revelation follows a clash between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and fuel marketers over the removal of the petrol subsidy. The ongoing depreciation of the naira against the U.S. dollar has intensified the debate on the subsidy’s impact.

The local currency closed at 998/dollar officially, while the black market recorded 1,225/dollar on Tuesday, reflecting the economic pressures influencing the fuel market.

Economists and oil marketers argue that the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) is on the rise due to the naira’s depreciation and increasing crude oil costs. They contend that, in a free market, petrol should be priced at N1,200 per litre.

Contrarily, the NNPC insists that it is recovering its full importation costs for PMS and denies the existence of a subsidy. The Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Derivatives Company, Bismarck Rewane, contends that the subsidy was reduced, not removed.

The clash in perspectives has triggered uncertainty about the actual status of the subsidy, with fuel marketers projecting a potential surge in petrol prices. The current price, ranging from N617 to N660 per litre, may see a substantial increase if the proposed N1,200 per litre is considered.

Despite President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of subsidy removal in 2023, conflicting statements from experts and the NNPC create ambiguity around the government’s stance on fuel subsidy.

Analysts emphasize the need for transparency and effective communication to address concerns about petrol prices and the subsidy’s impact on citizens.

As the subsidy debate continues, the economic challenges reflected in the naira’s depreciation persist, posing questions about the government’s approach to stabilizing the fuel market and mitigating the potential socio-economic consequences of subsidy removal.

In the midst of these developments, concerns about oil theft in the Niger Delta region persist, with the NNPC reporting 112 cases of crude oil theft within a week.

The ongoing battle against oil theft underscores the broader challenges facing Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, including production quotas and financial losses due to criminal activities.

The fuel market remains in a state of flux, awaiting decisive government action and clear communication to address the complexities surrounding subsidy policies and their implications for the Nigerian economy.

Following this, EFCC operatives descended upon Shehu’s office at Taraba Crescent in Maitama, initiating extensive interrogations. The confidential meeting commenced at 9 a.m. and concluded around 4:30 p.m., after which Shehu accompanied the EFCC officials to an undisclosed location.

It’s worth noting that before her recent Senate confirmation, Hajia Shehu held the position of National Programme Coordinator at the National Conditional Cash Transfer Office (NCTO) during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

In a decisive move, the Federal Ministry of Education, led by Minister Tahir Mammam, announced on Tuesday the suspension of the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from the Republic of Benin and Togo. This decision comes in the wake of an undercover investigation conducted by a Nigerian newspaper, revealing the existence of a degree mill in Cotonou, a major city in Benin Republic.

The investigation uncovered alarming practices, with a journalist reportedly obtaining a degree from Cotonou University within six weeks.

The journalist further participated in the mandatory one-year scheme organized by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), raising concerns about the legitimacy of the degrees offered by certain foreign institutions.

Defence Chief Unveils Motive Behind Plateau Christmas Massacre

The Defence Headquarters has asserted that the Christmas Eve massacres in various Plateau State communities, resulting in nearly 200 deaths, numerous injuries, and widespread displacement, were orchestrated with the intention of embarrassing and undermining the Federal Government. The attacks coincided with the seventh month of President Tinubu’s tenure.

In an interview with Channels TV on Monday, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, expressed deep regret over the unfortunate incidents in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi. He emphasized that there was no justifiable reason for the brutal attacks, describing them as a deliberate effort to embarrass everyone and discredit the government.

Addressing the delayed military response to distress calls from the affected villages, Mr. Musa confirmed ongoing arrests linked to the Christmas Eve killings in Plateau. Last week, Peoples Gazette reported over 112 deaths and 47 injuries resulting from coordinated attacks by armed herdsmen across at least 12 communities.

President Bola Tinubu, condemning the acts, has ordered the provision of relief materials for survivors. Vice President Kashim Shettima and government officials visited Plateau State to offer condolences to the families of victims.

In his New Year message, President Tinubu omitted reference to the Christmas Eve attack, asserting improved security since assuming office in May. However, Amnesty International criticized the President for failing to protect communities, both in Plateau State and across Nigeria.

As public outcry escalated, international bodies, including the United Nations, France, and the U.S., condemned the attacks. They urged the Federal Government to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice, emphasizing the need for accountability and ensuring the safety of communities.

The Plateau Christmas Eve massacre stands as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the nation’s security apparatus and the urgent need for comprehensive measures to safeguard citizens against such heinous acts.

South Korea Opposition Leader Lee Jae-myung Stabbed in Neck

South Korea’s political landscape was shaken on Tuesday when Lee Jae-myung, leader of the country’s main opposition party, was viciously stabbed in the neck during a visit to the southern city of Busan.

The assailant, a man in his sixties, approached Lee under the guise of seeking an autograph before attacking him with an 18 cm (7 inches) long knife purchased online.

The attack unfolded at the construction site of the Gadeokdo New Airport, where Lee was engaging with journalists. Dramatic footage captured the assailant lunging at Lee, leaving him with a 1-centimeter laceration on the left side of his neck. Despite the bloodied scene, Lee remained conscious, but there were concerns about potential damage to his jugular vein.

Democratic Party spokesperson Kwon Chil-seung revealed that Lee would undergo surgery at Seoul National University Hospital, describing the assault as an act of “terrorism” and “a serious threat to democracy.” The incident prompted swift condemnation from South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol, who expressed deep concern for Lee’s safety and ordered a prompt police investigation.

The attacker was swiftly apprehended at the scene, and police disclosed that he had purchased the knife online. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but the sheer brazenness of the assault has raised concerns about the safety of political figures in the country.

As news of the attack spread, a small crowd gathered outside the Seoul National University Hospital, where Lee was transferred. Amid heavy police presence, supporters shouted words of encouragement, reflecting the tension and uncertainty surrounding the situation.

South Korea’s national police agency responded by pledging to enhance personal protection for “key personnel” to prevent similar incidents in the future. The attack comes at a time of heightened political polarization in the country, with deep divides between conservative and liberal factions.

While the cause of the incident remains unclear, initial reports suggest a collision between the Airbus and a Coast Guard aircraft. The Airbus had recently arrived from Sapporo airport on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

A Coast Guard official at Haneda Airport, one of the world’s busiest, stated they were “checking details,” adding, “It’s not clear if there was a collision, but our plane is certainly involved,” according to AFP.

Television footage showcased flames billowing from the plane’s windows, with the nose grounded as rescue workers swiftly responded, dousing the aircraft with fire-suppressing agents. The runway bore witness to burning debris as emergency services mobilized over 70 fire engines, as reported by NHK.

Japan, known for its stringent safety measures, has not experienced a serious commercial aviation accident in decades. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled plans for a N100 billion allocation in the 2024 budget aimed at revitalizing the school feeding program, a move intended to boost school attendance and combat the challenge of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

The announcement came during the signing of the 2024 appropriation bill, themed “Renewed Hope,” at the State House in Abuja on Monday.

Tinubu emphasized the significance of this allocation, envisioning it as a stimulus to not only encourage school enrollment but also to tackle malnutrition among school-aged children.

He expressed confidence that this initiative would play a pivotal role in addressing key educational challenges across the nation.

“One of the priority areas of the bill we just passed is the N100 billion provision for the feeding of school children. I believe that is a stimulant that will encourage school enrolment and also address malnutrition among school children,” President Tinubu stated.

He further highlighted his intention to collaborate with local government bodies at sub-national levels to ensure an inclusive and effective implementation of the program.

This recent allocation marks a significant shift as Tinubu’s administration reinstates and reinvigorates the school feeding program, transferring its oversight from the Humanitarian Ministry to the Education Ministry.

The move aims not only to provide nutritious meals to students but also to enhance school attendance and promote improved learning outcomes.

Previously suspended during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the revived school feeding program is poised to become a focal point of the Education Ministry, aiming for broader impacts on student nutrition, educational participation, and academic advancement.

Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka, the founder of Adoration Ministries, Enugu, has raised an alarm, urging his followers to pray fervently to thwart impending attacks targeted at him in the coming year, 2024.

During a cross-over night service at the Adoration Ground in Enugu on Monday, the Catholic priest revealed that he had received a divine message forewarning him of an intensified onslaught planned against him.

Mbaka, without specifying the identities of those behind the purported plot, implored his congregation to support him through prayers as God had shown him that the attacks directed at him would be severe in the upcoming year.

“The Lord demands that all of you should back Father Mbaka with prayers because of the level of attack that is coming to me in 2024. I need your prayer backup,” Father Mbaka urged the attendees.

Expressing his surprise at the revelation, Mbaka admitted that he had not anticipated facing any attacks this year. However, according to him, the Holy Spirit had revealed that certain malevolent individuals harboring grievances were planning sinister actions against him.

The cleric recalled a similar instance in his New Year message for 2022 when he claimed there was a conspiracy to take his life following his conflict with the Catholic Diocese of Enugu in May 2021.

Mbaka’s political stance, which shifted from supporting President Muhammadu Buhari to criticizing the government’s policies, resulted in a rift between him and the Catholic Diocese of Enugu.

His call for the then president’s resignation or impeachment due to alleged bad governance drew strong reactions from the presidency, which accused Mbaka of seeking government contracts and favoritism.

Following the tense exchange and repeated warnings from the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Callistus Onaga, regarding political involvement, the Adoration Ministry was temporarily shut down by the bishop.

Plateau Massacre: What Is Going On in Plateau State Is Part of the Islamization Agenda

    By Sanco Ese

I am deeply saddened by the destruction, carnage and Barbarity going on in Plateau State and some parts of Northern Nigeria.

As it is now, We can comfortably conclude that our country is under the power and influence of a bunch of murderous and heartless jihadists and strangers from foreign lands.

The truth is that they wish to continue the Saurdana’s avowed march to Islamise and conquer the middle belt and southern Nigeria much in the same way that their great grandfather, Usman Dan Fodio, had conquered and Islamised the north two hundred and Nine years ago.

The notion by some Christians and non-Christians that Nigeria cannot be Islamised is a terrible progression in error, that is what the leaders of Egypt and Turkey once said.

Both Countries used to be 99% Christian until they let down their guard. Now they are both Muslim countries with tiny Christian minorities.

Read Also PLATEAU MASSACRE: The Nigerian State and The Road To Kigali

However, it is worth noting that No one or group of people or religious faith has a monopoly on violence, Christians and non-Christians have a right to exist as equal partners in Nigeria.

Those who are promoting the culture of violence should know We are not cowards and we shall never bend the knee or bow our heads to the tyranny of foreign invaders who erroneously believe that they were born to rule and that we were born to serve.

I believe I speak for millions when I say that the indigenous and oppressed people and ethnic nationalities of Nigeria have had enough of these open threats of tyranny and violence and neither are we interested in being vassals, willing serfs and pitiful slaves.

I do not seek to insult anyone or any group of people or to seek the break-up of Nigeria through armed struggle with this write-up or any other write-up. I deplore violence, I believe in the unity of Nigeria, I believe Nigeria is a secular state and I am a man of peace, this essay is simply my contribution to my understanding of our history, national discourse, our existence and our values as a people.

I am not a racist or a religious bigot, I have nothing against Muslims, I have friends and benefactors who are Muslims, I only believe that if we must exist as a nation then we must have a Nigeria where we all ( Muslims, Christians and Non-Christians) have equal rights and privileges.

If not, How will history, posterity and justice judge us and be served if we all keep quiet and act as if we do not recognise the fact that there is evil in the land?

It is time to confront our collective enemies, if we have to do that we must do so with confidence and strength. We must invoke the words and memory of David, the greatest of all of the Kings of Israel when he met Goliath in the field of battle.

He said, “You come against me with shield and spear but I come against you in the name of the Lord God of Hosts, the God of the Armies of Israel. Today He shall hand you over to me and I shall slay you and feed your flesh to the birds of the air”.

And so it shall be for the Goliaths in our land.

We serve a living God who is strong and mighty in battle and we can never be subdued, defeated or conquered. It is time for the sons and daughters of David to rise and confront the enemies of God and humanity.

May the souls of all those who were cut short by the terrorists, bloodthirsty demons of war and ethnic supremacists rest in peace.

    God bless Nigeria.

Global Banking Giants Announce Unprecedented Job Cuts in 2024″

In an unforeseen development, major global banks, including UBS, Wells Fargo, and others, have collectively initiated substantial job cuts, surpassing 60,000 in the year 2024. This represents one of the most significant workforce reductions since the 2008 global financial crisis.

Several factors contribute to the rationale behind this extensive transformation. Notably, the integration of Credit Suisse into UBS has played a pivotal role in this industry-wide shake-up. Furthermore, the repercussions of declining fees have profoundly impacted Wall Street’s revenue streams, triggering a strategic reassessment of human resources within these financial institutions.

As the financial sector grapples with heightened instability and uncertainty, the aftermath of these extensive job cuts is poised to send shockwaves across industries and global economies. The implications of this major restructuring are likely to extend far beyond the confines of the banking sector, influencing the broader economic landscape.

What are the factors that influence the black market dollar rate?

Factors Influencing the Black Market Dollar Rate:

    Supply and Demand Dynamics:

      • The fundamental economic principle of supply and demand plays a significant role. If demand for the dollar is high relative to its supply, the exchange rate tends to rise, and vice versa.

    Economic Indicators:

      • Economic indicators such as inflation rates, GDP growth, and employment figures can influence the black market dollar rate. A robust economy generally attracts foreign investors, increasing demand for the local currency.

    Political Stability and Governance:

      • Political stability fosters confidence among investors, positively impacting the exchange rate. Political uncertainty or instability can lead to a lack of confidence and a depreciation of the local currency.

    Government Policies:

      • Monetary and fiscal policies implemented by the government can affect the exchange rate. Policies that promote economic stability and growth tend to have a positive impact, while inconsistent or unfavorable policies can lead to currency depreciation.

    Foreign Exchange Reserves:

      • The level of a country’s foreign exchange reserves can influence its ability to stabilize its currency. Higher reserves provide a cushion against market pressures, while lower reserves may lead to a weaker currency.

    Trade Balances:

      • A country with a trade surplus (exports exceeding imports) is likely to have a stronger currency. Conversely, a trade deficit may lead to a weaker currency.

    Global Economic Conditions:

      • The overall health of the global economy can impact the black market dollar rate. Economic crises or uncertainties in major economies can lead to shifts in currency values.

    Interest Rates:

      • Interest rates set by the central bank influence the attractiveness of a currency. Higher interest rates may attract foreign investors seeking better returns, increasing demand for the local currency.

    Speculation:

      • Speculative activities in the foreign exchange market can lead to short-term fluctuations in the black market dollar rate. Traders’ perceptions of future economic conditions can drive speculative buying or selling.

    Legal and Regulatory Environment:

      • The regulatory environment, including restrictions on currency trading and foreign exchange policies, can impact the black market dollar rate.

    Inflation Rates:

      • High inflation rates erode the purchasing power of a currency, making it less attractive to investors. Countries with lower inflation rates may experience a more favorable exchange rate.

    Market Sentiment:

      • Perceptions and sentiments in the market, influenced by news, geopolitical events, or other external factors, can have a short-term impact on the black market dollar rate.

Police Commissioner Urges Vigilance as NYSC Member Defiles Minor.

In a disheartening incident in Akwa Ibom State, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olatoye Durosinmi, has issued a stern warning to parents regarding the individuals they entrust with the care and education of their minor or teenage children. The caution comes in the wake of an arrest involving a paedophile member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who stands accused of defiling a three-year-old child left in his care for teaching purposes.

The police chief, while addressing the press during the weekend’s parade of criminal suspects at the state headquarters near Uyo, emphasized the need for parents to exercise caution when hiring lesson teachers or caregivers. Commissioner Durosinmi stressed that efforts to mold young minds could turn counterproductive if not undertaken with extreme care.

The accused NYSC member, whose identity is being kept confidential pending legal proceedings, was detained along with other criminal suspects apprehended across the state for various offenses, including oil theft, armed robbery, kidnapping, and rape during the last quarter of 2023.

Commissioner Durosinmi urged parents to be meticulous in selecting teachers, suggesting that male teachers handle male children, and female teachers take on the responsibility of teaching female children. Expressing disbelief at the actions of the accused, he questioned what would attract an adult, especially an educated and mentally sound Corps member, to such a heinous act against a three-year-old.

In an interview with LEADERSHIP, the suspect admitted to the crime, attributing it to the influence of the devil. Despite acknowledging his wrongdoing, he pleaded for forgiveness and a chance to reform.

As the legal process unfolds, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased vigilance in safeguarding children and the imperative of thorough background checks for individuals entrusted with the education and care of minors.

The community is left grappling with the shocking revelation, hoping for justice to be served and reaffirming the importance of safeguarding the well-being and future of its young members.
