Ex-Minister Pauline Tallen Appeals Judgment Barring Her From Public Office

A former Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Pauline Tallen, has taken her case to the Court of Appeal in Abuja, seeking to overturn the judgment of the FCT High Court that barred her from holding public office. This move follows a ruling by Justice Peter Kekemeke on December 18, 2023, in response to a case brought against her by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The FCT High Court had prohibited Tallen from holding public office due to her alleged “disparaging” comments against a previous court judgment.

Justice Kekemeke provided her with an option to publish a personally signed apology letter to the NBA, the judiciary, and Nigerians in two national dailies—The Guardian and The Punch—within 30 days. Failure to comply would result in the order becoming perpetual.

In her appeal filed on January 2, 2024, through her lawyer, JK Gadzama SAN, Tallen formulated 13 grounds challenging the trial court’s decision. She argued that the judgment amounted to a miscarriage of justice and urged the appellate court to dismiss the suit and set aside the previous court’s decision.

Tallen asserted that the trial court erred in law, particularly in rejecting her preliminary objection on the competence of the respondent’s affidavit, locus standi, and propriety of the suit. She contended that despite presenting credible evidence, the court’s decision was a miscarriage of justice.

The FCT High Court had labeled Tallen’s comments against the judiciary, concerning a decision of the Federal High Court in Adamawa State, as “unconstitutional, careless, reckless, disparaging.” It deemed her call to disobey the judgment as “contemptuous of the Federal High Court of Nigeria.

The legal battle originated from the APC primary elections in May 2022, where Sen Aisha Dahiru (Binani) defeated Tallen’s closest rival, Nuhu Ribadu. Following the nullification of Binani’s victory by Justice Abdulaziz Anka, Tallen, as the Minister of Women Affairs, publicly criticized the judgment as a “Kangaroo judgment” aimed at marginalizing women in Nigerian politics.

The NBA, under then-President Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, sought an apology from Tallen for her alleged disparaging comments. When Tallen did not comply, the NBA instituted a suit against her before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, leading to the recent judgment that she is now appealing.

Former Sierra Leone President Koroma Seeks Asylum in Nigeria Amidst Treason Charges

Controversy surrounds the recent decision by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to relocate former Sierra Leonean President, Ernest Bai Koroma, to Nigeria following treason charges.

The move, announced by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Alieu Touray, stems from an agreement reached during a high-level delegation’s mission to Freetown on December 23, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana and Senegal’s Macky Sall.

In a statement, Touray confirmed that the former President has accepted Nigeria’s offer to host him temporarily in Abuja. The proposed relocation, however, has faced opposition from Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister Timothy Kabba, who labeled it a unilateral decision by ECOWAS.

Ernest Bai Koroma, who served as President for 11 years until 2018, was charged with four counts of treason in connection to an attempted coup that occurred last November.

The government’s position on the relocation remains divided, with Koroma’s lawyer, Joseph Kamara, expressing shock and disbelief, denouncing the charges as a “dangerous precedent.”

Kamara stated, “A dark cloud has shadowed the skies of our country, meaning that we are dragging a former head of state – democratically elected – on trumped-up charges under a political vendetta.” The charges are related to a violent incident where gunmen attacked a military armory and prisons in Freetown, resulting in the release of nearly 2,000 inmates and the death of about 20 people.

Koroma, under house arrest since the coup attempt, denies involvement in the attack. The legal proceedings also involve 11 other individuals, including one of Koroma’s former bodyguards. The timing of the attempted coup, just five months after a disputed election won by incumbent President Julius Maada Bio, adds complexity to the situation.

Global Banking Giants Announce Unprecedented Job Cuts in 2024″

In an unforeseen development, major global banks, including UBS, Wells Fargo, and others, have collectively initiated substantial job cuts, surpassing 60,000 in the year 2024. This represents one of the most significant workforce reductions since the 2008 global financial crisis.

Several factors contribute to the rationale behind this extensive transformation. Notably, the integration of Credit Suisse into UBS has played a pivotal role in this industry-wide shake-up. Furthermore, the repercussions of declining fees have profoundly impacted Wall Street’s revenue streams, triggering a strategic reassessment of human resources within these financial institutions.

As the financial sector grapples with heightened instability and uncertainty, the aftermath of these extensive job cuts is poised to send shockwaves across industries and global economies. The implications of this major restructuring are likely to extend far beyond the confines of the banking sector, influencing the broader economic landscape.

What are the factors that influence the black market dollar rate?

Factors Influencing the Black Market Dollar Rate:

    Supply and Demand Dynamics:

      • The fundamental economic principle of supply and demand plays a significant role. If demand for the dollar is high relative to its supply, the exchange rate tends to rise, and vice versa.

    Economic Indicators:

      • Economic indicators such as inflation rates, GDP growth, and employment figures can influence the black market dollar rate. A robust economy generally attracts foreign investors, increasing demand for the local currency.

    Political Stability and Governance:

      • Political stability fosters confidence among investors, positively impacting the exchange rate. Political uncertainty or instability can lead to a lack of confidence and a depreciation of the local currency.

    Government Policies:

      • Monetary and fiscal policies implemented by the government can affect the exchange rate. Policies that promote economic stability and growth tend to have a positive impact, while inconsistent or unfavorable policies can lead to currency depreciation.

    Foreign Exchange Reserves:

      • The level of a country’s foreign exchange reserves can influence its ability to stabilize its currency. Higher reserves provide a cushion against market pressures, while lower reserves may lead to a weaker currency.

    Trade Balances:

      • A country with a trade surplus (exports exceeding imports) is likely to have a stronger currency. Conversely, a trade deficit may lead to a weaker currency.

    Global Economic Conditions:

      • The overall health of the global economy can impact the black market dollar rate. Economic crises or uncertainties in major economies can lead to shifts in currency values.

    Interest Rates:

      • Interest rates set by the central bank influence the attractiveness of a currency. Higher interest rates may attract foreign investors seeking better returns, increasing demand for the local currency.

    Speculation:

      • Speculative activities in the foreign exchange market can lead to short-term fluctuations in the black market dollar rate. Traders’ perceptions of future economic conditions can drive speculative buying or selling.

    Legal and Regulatory Environment:

      • The regulatory environment, including restrictions on currency trading and foreign exchange policies, can impact the black market dollar rate.

    Inflation Rates:

      • High inflation rates erode the purchasing power of a currency, making it less attractive to investors. Countries with lower inflation rates may experience a more favorable exchange rate.

    Market Sentiment:

      • Perceptions and sentiments in the market, influenced by news, geopolitical events, or other external factors, can have a short-term impact on the black market dollar rate.

Cyber Kidnapping: What It Means and How to Protect Yourself Right Now

Understanding and Safeguarding Against Cyber Kidnapping: A Critical Call to Vigilance.

In the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats, one disturbing criminal trend has gained prominence – cyber kidnapping. Similar to other online frauds, this digital crime involves online attackers targeting victims, coercing them into isolation, and demanding ransom from their families. Recently, the harrowing case of 17-year-old Chinese exchange student Kai Zhuang in the United States has brought the gravity of this issue to the forefront.

    The Disturbing Trend Unveiled

Cyber kidnapping unfolds as scammers exploit vulnerable individuals remotely, demanding ransom money from their families. In the case of Zhuang, his family in China was alarmed when they received images suggesting he had been forcibly kidnapped.

Despite the host family in the US reporting having seen him earlier and unaware of any abduction, continuous threats to Zhuang’s safety compelled his family to pay approximately $80,000 in ransom to a Chinese bank account.

The ordeal extended over a month, with the scammers coercing Zhuang to comply with their demands under the threat of harm to his family in China. They ordered him to isolate himself in the wilderness, sending staged photos resembling a kidnapping. Fortunately, the Riverdale police intervened, rescuing him from the woods.

Magnus Abe Returns to APC, Pledges Support for President Tinubu’s Agenda

Magnus Abe, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the March 18 governorship elections in Rivers State, has officially returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Abe, who had left the party amidst the political heat of 2023, expressed his commitment to enhancing the positive initiatives led by President Bola Tinubu.

In an interview with Channels Television’s Politics on Monday, Abe confirmed his political realignment, stating, “Politically, I am heading back for the APC.” This move signals a significant development in the political landscape, especially considering Abe’s influential position and past association with the APC.

Abe, a former senator, pledged to leverage his considerable support base to strengthen the APC’s presence in Rivers State. His return to the party is seen as a strategic move to contribute to the advancements championed by President Tinubu on a national scale.

It was gathered  that the seasoned politician emphasized his dedication to supporting the APC’s agenda, aligning himself with the positive initiatives championed by the party’s leadership. As political dynamics continue to evolve, Abe’s return is likely to impact the political dynamics in Rivers State, potentially reshaping alliances and strategies leading up to future elections.

Ejes Gist News believes, Abe’s decision to rejoin the APC underscores the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where alliances and affiliations often undergo transformations in response to changing circumstances and political considerations.

As he mobilizes his supporters for the APC, the coming months will reveal the extent of his influence and the implications of his return on the political landscape in Rivers State.

Bombshell Accusation: Ex-Military Official Claims Buhari “Promoted and Enhanced Terrorism” in 8 Years.

A retired Nigerian colonel, Hassan Stan-Labo, has sent shockwaves through the nation with explosive accusations against former President Muhammadu Buhari. On Arise TV’s “Morning Show,” Stan-Labo, a security consultant and defence strategist, declared that in the past eight years, not only did Buhari “do nothing” against terrorism, but he actively “promoted and enhanced” it.

Stan-Labo’s scathing remarks directly challenge one of Buhari’s key campaign promises – tackling the Boko Haram insurgency that has plagued Nigeria for a decade.

The retired colonel alleges that beyond inaction, the Buhari administration witnessed a disturbing trend at the sub-national level: “governors engaged in some form of romance with terrorists, with some even recommending amnesty for them.

Magnus Abe Dumps SDP, Returns to APC, Gives Reasons

Ex-Military General’s statement, paints a picture of a government not just failing to combat terrorism, but potentially enabling it through political alliances.

    Gravity of Stan-Labo’s claims

Stan-Labo’s claims are serious and require thorough investigation. The Nigerian public deserves answers on whether their former president, entrusted with their security, truly turned a blind eye to a grave threat, or worse, actively abetted it.

The allegation of state-level collaboration with terrorists is particularly alarming, raising questions about potential infiltration and complicity within the very structures meant to protect citizens.

    Former President Buhari response.

The Buhari administration has not yet responded to Stan-Labo’s accusations. However, the former president’s supporters are likely to dismiss them as politically motivated attacks.

Meanwhile, critics and opposition figures will seize upon these claims as evidence of their long-held concerns about Buhari’s handling of the Boko Haram crisis.

The coming days and weeks will see intense scrutiny of both the claims themselves and the Buhari administration’s record on terrorism.

Nigerians deserve transparency and accountability on this critical issue, and only a thorough investigation can provide it.

  • Ondo State Governor Suspends all Caretaker Chairmen Amid Legal Battle

Ondo State Governor Suspends all Caretaker Chairmen Amid Legal Battle

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has taken a decisive step by suspending the caretaker chairmen overseeing the 18 local government areas and 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state. The suspension comes in the wake of an ongoing legal battle surrounding the appointment of these caretaker committees.

An Akure High Court, led by Justice Yemi Fasanmi, had granted an interim injunction filed by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The injunction sought to restrain the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu from inaugurating any person not democratically elected to administer the affairs of the local councils and LCDAs.

Despite the court’s initial order, the caretaker chairmen resumed office, citing that they had already been sworn in before the injunction was granted. However, Aiyedatiwa’s recent move to suspend them until the court determines the case indicates a firm stance on upholding legal processes.

The suspension was communicated through a letter from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, signed by Alonge Adewale. The letter emphasized the need for the caretaker chairmen to relinquish their roles, as their continued presence was in violation of the court’s directive.

The Ministry directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGAs) in all LGAs/LCDAs to assume acting capacity immediately. The caretaker chairmen were instructed to submit all assets and properties of the LGAs/LCDAs without delay.

However, one of the suspended caretaker chairmen, speaking anonymously, revealed that they had obtained a stay of execution against the court order.

Expressing surprise at Aiyedatiwa’s decision not to abide by the stay, the caretaker chairman mentioned the likelihood of the case proceeding to the Supreme Court for resolution. The ongoing legal battle raises questions about the intersection of political appointments and judicial processes in Ondo State.

Terrorist Attacks on Iran General Qasem Soleimani’s Tomb Claim 103 Lives

In a tragic incident on the fourth anniversary of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani’s assassination by the U.S., at least 103 people lost their lives in two bomb explosions near his tomb in Kerman, as reported by Iran’s state media.

The explosions occurred during a procession near the Saheb al-Zaman mosque in Kerman, with dozens more reported wounded. State broadcaster Irib labeled it a “terrorist attack,” and videos from the scene depicted bodies on the road, with ambulances rushing to assist.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility at this time. However, groups like Arab separatists, ISIS, and other Sunni jihadist factions have previously targeted security forces and Shia shrines in Iran.

Nigerian Football Coach, Sebastian Brodericks Imasuen, Dies at 85

Soleimani, once considered the most powerful figure in Iran after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq in 2020. Wednesday’s incident adds to the heightened regional tensions following the death of the deputy leader of Iran-backed Palestinian group Hamas in an apparent Israeli drone strike in Lebanon.

State TV footage showed the explosions occurring during a gathering on the outskirts of Kerman, Soleimani’s hometown. The first blast reportedly took place about 700 meters from the Garden of Martyrs cemetery, followed by a second explosion 15 minutes later, roughly 1 km away.

Tasnim news agency, linked to the Revolutionary Guards, suggested that “two bags carrying a bomb” were remotely detonated. Eyewitnesses described a sudden explosion, with people falling as they approached the cemetery.

The local emergency services department reported 103 dead and 141 wounded, some critically. Notably, the Iranian Red Crescent mentioned the death of at least one paramedic dispatched to the scene.

While Soleimani’s tomb appeared undamaged, the incident marks a tragic and unsettling event on a day that already carried significance in Iran’s recent history. Investigations are ongoing to determine the perpetrators and motives behind these deadly bombings.

Adeyanju Urges Atiku to Resign from Politics and Mentor Young Leaders

Abuja-based human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has called on Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, to step away from politics and become a mentor for emerging politicians. In his New Year message, Adeyanju asserted that Atiku’s persistence in contesting for the presidency in 2023 paved the way for Bola Tinubu to become the President of Nigeria.

Adeyanju acknowledged Atiku’s significant contributions to Nigerian democracy but emphasized the need for him to bow out gracefully, urging him to leave a legacy of uniting the opposition and supporting younger politicians.

Read also: Halima Shehu: EFCC Arrests Suspended NSIPA Boss

According to Adeyanju, Atiku’s refusal to cooperate with Labour Party’s Peter Obi, New Nigeria People’s Party’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ultimately contributed to Tinubu’s victory.

Highlighting the missed opportunity in the 2023 elections, Adeyanju pointed out that Atiku’s failure to foster unity among key opposition figures and his inability to manage opposition elements led to President Tinubu’s narrow victory.

The activist emphasized that Atiku should have worked collaboratively with Peter Obi, Kwankwaso, and others under one platform, which could have resulted in a different presidential outcome.

Adeyanju argued that Atiku’s divisive actions, picking unnecessary fights within the opposition, and failure to support key figures ultimately weakened the opposition’s chances. He urged Atiku to reconsider his intention to run in the 2027 presidential elections, stressing that he is not the sole politician in Nigeria and that it’s time for the younger generation to take the lead.

Calling on Atiku to adopt the role of a unifying figure, Adeyanju likened him to Moses and encouraged him to prioritize the greater good of a united opposition.

The activist stressed that history would judge Atiku based on his actions and urged the opposition to find common ground, presenting a united front in 2027 through a younger and vibrant candidate.

In conclusion, Adeyanju’s message resonates with a call for Atiku Abubakar to transition from active politics, leaving behind a legacy of unity and mentorship for the benefit of Nigeria’s political landscape.
