This includes the implementation of projects such as the Trans-Nigeria Pipeline Project, which encompasses the Escravos to Lagos Pipeline System, the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben gas pipeline, and the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline, as stated by Kyari.
According to him, the power project represents a milestone in NNPCL’s efforts to fulfill its gas and power mandate, aiming to contribute five gigawatts to the national power generation by 2024.
At present, NNPC and its partners are providing approximately 800MW of electricity to the national grid from Afam VI and Okpai Phase 1 thermal power plants, with a combined installed capacity of 1,100MW.
Furthermore, the completion of the Okpai Phase 2 project is expected to add up to 320MW of power to the national grid, and progress is underway with other power plant initiatives across the country, including those located along the AKK pipeline route.
“The Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant (IPP) is one of NNPC’s prominent electricity initiatives situated along the AKK route. It contributes to the overall 3,600MW power generation capacity, which also encompasses Kaduna IPP (900MW) and Kano IPP (1,350MW), as mentioned by Kyari.

According to the statement, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) expresses concern about the ongoing events in Nigeria’s neighboring country, the Republic of Niger, and the potential effects on the region.
The statement emphasizes that the actions being considered should have carefully considered the historical background and shared interests of both countries and thoroughly evaluated the repercussions of resorting to military force.
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) acknowledges ECOWAS’ approach of applying pressure on the culprits, but it believes that military action should not be an obligatory condition for Nigeria and the region to promote democracy in the 21st century.
The ACF also pointed out that while military intervention might bring about a short-term resolution, it could have adverse consequences for Nigeria’s leadership role and the regional body in the long run.

About 512 directors in the Nigerian civil service will have been forced to retire due to the implementation of the newly revised Public Service Rules, 2021, by the Federal Government. The revised rules, which took effect from July 27, 2023, were launched by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation on July 28, 2023, in Abuja.
One of the major changes introduced by the new rules is a tenure policy for permanent secretaries. According to the policy, permanent secretaries are now required to spend four years in office, which is renewable subject to their performance.
Sources within the Federal civil service confirmed that the new rule is expected to affect as many as 512 directors who have been stagnant in their positions for eight years or more. The implementation of the revised Public Service Rules has already caused tension and agitation in the civil service.
The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan, unveiled the revised rules during the civil service week, noting that the implementation would commence immediately. Yemi-Esan mentioned that the rules were revised under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari but were delayed until President Bola Tinubu took over in line with the ‘renewed hope’ agenda.
However, the implementation of the new PSR has been met with opposition from some public servants, who argue that it conflicts with the mandatory 60 years retirement age for civil servants, citing relevant sections of the rules. PSR 020908 states that the mandatory retirement age remains 60 years or 35 years of pensionable service, with exemptions for certain groups such as judicial officers and members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
On the other hand, the revised PSR 020909 stipulates that directors or their equivalents in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must compulsorily retire after serving eight years on the tenure policy post. Additionally, Permanent Secretaries are now required to hold office for a term of four years, with the possibility of renewal for another four years, subject to satisfactory performance.
The memo dated July 27, addressed to all Permanent Secretaries, Accountant-General of the Federation, Auditor-General of the Federation, and Heads of Extra Ministerial Departments, emphasizes strict compliance with the revised rules.
The implementation of these new rules has raised concerns among civil servants, and the matter is likely to continue generating discussions and debates in the civil service in the coming days.
Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Philips Shaibu, has made serious allegations against Governor Godwin Obaseki, claiming that a plot to impeach him is underway. In an effort to protect his position as Deputy Governor of the South-South State, Shaibu has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The lawsuit lists several defendants, including the Inspector General of Police, State Security Service, Edo Governor, Edo Speaker, and Edo Chief Judge. In an affidavit, Shaibu expressed his concerns, stating, “I know that this case is all about the action of the 3rd Defendant in preventing me from carrying out the functions of my office as Deputy Governor of Edo and using the 1st and 2nd Defendants to harass, intimidate, and embarrass me with the 4th and 5th Defendants in tandem with the desire of the 3rd Defendant to impeach me.”
