US Court Gives Verdict on Atiku’s Suit Seeking Tinubu’s Academic Records

In a significant development ahead of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s final verdict, the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois County, United States, has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

The suit, which sought access to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University, was withdrawn by Atiku before the date of the hearing.

Why American court dismissed Atiku Abubakar’s case against Bola Tinubu

According to court papers dated July 31, obtained by The PUNCH on Saturday, August 5, Judge Patrick J. Heneghan dismissed the case without prejudice. In his judgment, the judge held that the “petitioner’s subpoena in this case is withdrawn, and thus Chicago State University (CSU) will not be deposed pursuant to the subpoena in this case.”

The suit, with Atiku as the petitioner and CSU as the respondent, was ruled on by Justice Heneghan. The dismissal without prejudice resolves all matters pending before the court, as reported by ThisDay.

Bola Tinubu attended Chicago University as a male, not a female,” Reno Omokri Discloses

Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, recently shared fresh details about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s record from Chicago State University. On Twitter, Omokri clarified that Tinubu attended the university as a male, debunking speculation to the contrary. He further revealed that the university’s letter confirmed Tinubu’s attendance.

In a separate twist, President Tinubu tendered copies of his academic records from Chicago State University before the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja on Tuesday, July 4.

Senate Issues Fresh Ultimatum to President Tinubu to Act Swiftly on Appointment

President Tinubu Urged to Act Swiftly on Appointment”

In response to the prolonged absence of an Auditor General for the Federation (AuGF), the Nigerian Senate has issued a formal request to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to promptly appoint a qualified candidate to the crucial position. The call for action comes after nearly ten months of vacancy, raising concerns about potential mismanagement, lack of transparency, and accountability within the government.

The Senate, through a communique signed by Senator Aliyu Wadada, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, emphasized the significance of having a substantive Auditor General for the office. As the apex auditing institution in Nigeria, the role of the AuGF is pivotal in ensuring checks and balances within the country’s financial system.

Highlighting the repercussions of the extended vacancy, Senator Wadada pointed out that the absence of the Auditor General has led to a lack of oversight, which is a critical component of the National Assembly’s Committee on Public Accounts. This absence of checks and balances poses a considerable risk to effective governance and the nation’s efforts in combating corruption.

The Senate firmly stressed the importance of President Tinubu’s immediate attention to this matter, as it directly affects the country’s interests. They emphasized that a fully functioning Auditor General’s office is integral to promoting transparency, accountability, and the successful fight against corruption in Nigeria.

The Senate’s appeal to President Tinubu aligns with Section 86 of the 1999 constitution, which mandates the appointment of an Auditor General for the Federation.

The communique reads in part:  ”The absence of a substantive AuGF will affect strict adherence to accounting standards, and the annual reports of the auditor-general on the accounts of the Federation of Nigeria Agencies and Ministries, Agencies, Departments (MDAs) cannot be efficiently transmitted.

As the nation awaits President Tinubu’s response, the Senate remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding accountability and transparency in governance.

The appointment of a qualified Auditor General will be a decisive step towards ensuring proper oversight and prudent financial management within Nigeria’s governmental agencies and institutions.

Ganduje Reveals Reasons Behind Removing Maryam Shetty from Tinubu’s Ministerial List

The national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, revealed in a statement, he played a significant role in the removal and replacement of Maryam Shetty from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ministerial nominees’ list.

Ganduje explained that after thorough deliberations and assessments of the ministerial nominees, it became evident that there were concerns among Kano residents regarding Shetty’s competency for the position. These concerns prompted him to take action and advocate for her removal from the list.

Why Ganduje is against Maryam Shetty’s ministerial nomination

During an interview on Freedom Radio, Abdullahi Ganduje, the new national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made allegations about Maryam Shetty’s inclusion in the 19-man ministerial list. According to Daily Nigerian‘s report on the interview, Ganduje claimed that Shetty’s name was smuggled into the list, which led to an upset among Kano residents who questioned her competency for the position.

Ganduje further expressed doubts about Shetty’s competency, which ultimately led to her replacement with Mariya Bunkure as the new ministerial nominee. The decision to replace Shetty with Bunkure was seen as a strategic move to address the concerns raised by the public and to ensure a qualified candidate represented Kano in the ministerial position.

The interview shed light on the political dynamics behind Shetty’s removal and highlighted the challenges faced by political figures in making appointments that align with public expectations and party interests. The situation also underscored the importance of transparency and merit-based selections in political appointments to foster public trust and confidence in the government’s decision-making process.

    He said:

But what happened in this case is that we were not consulted. So we just heard her name on air. Initially, we didn’t complain, taking into consideration that Mr President has the right to appoint anyone. And as loyalists of the president who understand democracy, we accepted his choice.

“But again, we don’t know her, and since we don’t know her, we can’t vouch for her competency for the job.”

“Maryam Shetty will be considered for another job”, Ganduje assures

In response to the dramatic removal of Maryam Shetty from the ministerial list, Abdullahi Ganduje, the new national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), acknowledged her previous role and assured that she would be considered for another appointment in the future.

During a press conference held on August 6, 2023, Ganduje expressed gratitude for Shetty’s contributions and highlighted her dedication to public service. He emphasized that the decision to replace her with Mariya Bunkure was a strategic move in the interest of the party and the nation.

Ganduje further reassured Shetty and her supporters that her talents and capabilities would not go unnoticed, and the party would keep her in mind for other suitable positions in the government. He praised her professionalism and commitment to the APC’s principles, hinting at the possibility of her being given another opportunity to serve in a different capacity.

Adeboye preaches about Maryam Shetty, ministerial nominee dropped by Tinubu

“During today’s RCCG Thanksgiving service, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), referenced Maryam Shetty’s recent removal from the ministerial list in his sermon. Shetty was among the ministerial nominees dropped and replaced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In his sermon, Pastor Adeboye highlighted the importance of resilience in the face of unexpected challenges and emphasized the need for trust in divine timing. He encouraged the congregation to remain steadfast in their faith, knowing that God’s plans might not always align with human expectations.

The renowned cleric further urged individuals to seek comfort and guidance from their faith during times of uncertainty, reminding them that God’s ultimate purpose would prevail. Arsenal vs Man City: Gunners win Community Shield after penalties

The highly anticipated clash between the reigning champions and the hard-charging Swedish team on a winning streak was a thrilling spectacle for soccer fans worldwide.

The game, held at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, saw 120 minutes of regulation play end without a goal, despite the USWNT’s numerous close calls. The nail-biting suspense continued as both teams battled through penalty kicks, which eventually went into sudden death.

Throughout the penalties, the odds swayed back and forth, with Sweden’s Nathalie Björn and the U.S. star Megan Rapinoe missing their shots, setting off a chain of four consecutive missed kicks. In a dramatic turn of events, U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher’s heroic block was not enough to stop the ball from crossing the line after Sweden’s Lina Hurtig’s shot, leading to a heart-wrenching 5-4 defeat for the United States.

The USWNT entered the tournament as favorites, having triumphed in the last two World Cups in 2019 and 2015, as well as in 1999 and 1991. However, their performance in the group stage left much to be desired, with victories against Vietnam and a draw against Portugal and the Netherlands.

With five points earned in the group stage, trailing the Netherlands by two, it marked the first time in Women’s World Cup history that the U.S. earned fewer than six points during the group stage. Despite this, the USWNT fought valiantly in their fourth-ever World Cup game to enter extra time, with all three prior games also leading to penalty shootouts.

    Sweden vs USA heights

Swedish goalkeeper Zecira Musovic’s remarkable saves, including a strong charge by Alex Morgan in regulation play, played a crucial role in Sweden’s victory. As the first half of play was dominated by the U.S. team with more possession and shots on goal, Sweden intensified their efforts in the second half.

Star midfielder Megan Rapinoe, a member of previous World Cup-winning squads, made her mark by entering the game in the eighth minute of extra time. With her expected retirement after this tournament, it was a momentous match for Rapinoe and her fans.

Sweden, ranked third in the tournament, showcased their strength by topping their group with nine points after convincing victories against Argentina, Italy, and South Africa. Facing Japan in the quarterfinals, they were eager to make history and improve on their runner-up position from the 2003 tournament.

For the USWNT, Lindsey Horan and Sophia Smith were the leading scorers in the group stage, each netting two goals. Rose Lavelle sat out the Round of 16 match due to a yellow card accumulation suspension.

Here are some of the causes of the dwindling dollar-to-naira exchange rate.

Inflation Rates: It is well known that inflation directly impacts black market exchange rates. If the Nigerian economy can be stabilized and inflation is controlled, the naira will benefit; however, if the naira continues to fall, it may indicate that food and other necessities are becoming more expensive daily.

Interest Rates: Another tool to keep an eye on is interest rates. If the interest rate at which banks lend money rises, it would harm the economy, causing it to contract and, as a result, the value of the naira to fall.

Government Debt: National debt can impact investor confidence and, as a result, the influx of funds into the economy. If inflows are high, the naira exchange rate will rise in favour of the naira.
Speculators: Speculators frequently impact the naira-to-dollar exchange rate. They stockpile money in anticipation of a gain, causing the naira to plummet even lower.
Conditions of Trade: Favorable trade terms will increase the value of the naira to the dollar, although Nigeria is currently experiencing a trade deficit. Everything comes from China, India, and the majority of Asian countries.

ECOWAS Ultimatum Expires: Fear Grips Northerners as Tinubu Pursues Military Action Against Niger Junta

Nigerians Fear Escalating Tensions Amidst Tinubu’s Military Action Proposal for Niger Republic

    ECOWAS 7-day ultimatum expires day.

Palpable fear has engulfed Nigerians, particularly those residing in the northern region, following President Bola Tinubu’s decision to seek military action against the junta in Niger Republic. The move comes after the recent toppling of Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, by his military guard, sparking concerns about restoring democracy in the neighboring country.

As per reports, Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, along with 10 senior military officers, announced a coup in Niger on July 27, citing allegations of poor governance and the government’s inability to address security and other challenges plaguing the nation.

In response, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by President Tinubu as its newly elected Chairman, issued a stern seven-day ultimatum to the junta to restore normalcy or face stringent sanctions.

The ECOWAS leaders convened in an emergency meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, and agreed upon several political sanctions to pressure the military junta. These measures include closing and monitoring all land borders with Niger Republic, cutting off electricity supply, mobilizing international support, preventing commercial and special flights to and from Niger, blocking goods transit from Lagos and eastern seaports, conducting sensitization campaigns, and preparing for military intervention if the junta remains unyielding.

In an attempt to resolve the crisis peacefully, President Tinubu dispatched a delegation led by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), to Niamey on August 3rd. However, reports suggest that the Nigerien military has shown reluctance to engage in dialogue, prompting President Tinubu to seek the Senate’s approval for military action against the junta.

The looming prospect of military intervention has raised concerns among Nigerians, particularly those residing in the northern states bordering Niger. Burkina Faso and Mali have also expressed reservations about military action in their coup-hit neighbor, warning that it could escalate tensions in the West African region.

Prominent figures, including an Islamic preacher in Kano and the Northern Senators Forum, have cautioned against immediate military intervention. They advocate for exhausting diplomatic avenues first, citing the potential consequences on innocent citizens and the potential impact on Nigeria’s internal challenges.

Breaking: Senate rejects Tinubu’s request to invade Niger Republic

The Senate has turned down President Bola Tinubu’s appeal for military intervention to oust the coup leaders in Niger Republic.

As a result, any prospects of Nigeria engaging in war with the neighboring country fade away, especially with the ECOWAS 7-day ultimatum to the junta reaching its final hours.

“After a two-hour closed-door session on Saturday, Mr. Akpabio stated that the Senate acknowledges President Tinubu’s communication, which does not seek approval for a war but instead solicits support for the successful implementation of the ECOWAS communique.

The Senate has been given the responsibility to engage further with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to find the most suitable resolution for the issue, considering the amicable relationship between Nigeria and Niger,” Mr. Akpabio emphasized.

Last week, a military junta led by Abdouramane Tchiani overthrew Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, and has since taken control of the nation. Doctors to embark on nationwide protest over unmet demands

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has announced their intention to stage peaceful protests starting from Wednesday, August 9, 2023, unless their demands are met by the Federal Government.

In a circular titled ‘Notice of nationwide mass protests and picketing by NARD,’ the association conveyed their plan to picket various federal and state tertiary health institutions, as well as the Federal Ministry of Health and the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.

The circular was addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Olufunso Adebiyi.

The circular was jointly signed by the President of the association, Dr. Emeka Orji, and the Secretary General, Dr. Kelechi Chikezie.

NARD began an indefinite strike on July 26, 2023, after the government failed to meet their demands within the two-week ultimatum they had given.

The doctors’ demands include the implementation of the one-for-one replacement policy for healthcare workers, stopping the downgrading of membership certificates issued by the West African, Postgraduate Medical and Surgical Colleges by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, immediate payment of all salary arrears, implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, a new hazard allowance, and the domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act, among other requests.

In the meantime, the Federal Government issued a circular on August 1, 2023, instructing the Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors in the Federal Tertiary Hospitals to enforce the ‘no work, no pay’ policy against the striking members of NARD.

The Federal Government also instructed the hospitals to keep an attendance register for resident doctors who are willing to work.

The circular stated that the National Executive Council of NARD decided to commence the protests and picketing at 10 am on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, targeting the Federal Ministry of Health, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, and all federal and state tertiary health institutions across the country.

It pains us that instead of sincerely and collaboratively addressing the challenges that triggered the labor strike, despite our repeated ultimatums, our overseeing ministry and the Federal Government have opted to vilify Nigerian resident doctors, despite their sacrifices and dedication.

As a result, we have collectively decided that it’s time to share our perspective with the world – the deterioration and corruption within the healthcare sector, along with the prolonged neglect suffered by public health institutions over the years, leading to recurring labor disputes.

We hold the belief that the government still has an opportunity to earnestly tackle the pertinent issues before the 9th of August 2023, or else we will be left with no alternative.”
