SGF Akume meets Ortom amidst defection talks, as PDP G-5 members set to collapse structures into APC

SGF Akume meets Ortom amidst defection talks, the G-5 governors are set to collapse PDP structures into the APC in the coming month.

Defection talks are currently underway as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, meets with Governor Samuel Ortom and the G-5 governors in an attempt to merge the structures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming months, Ejes Gist News reports.

The talks, as reported by Sunday PUNCH, suggest a potential exodus of the G-5 leaders from the PDP before the 2027 general elections.

The G-5 group consists of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, as well as former governors Nyesom Wike, Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Samuel Ortom of Rivers, Abia, Enugu, and Benue states, respectively.

The discord within the PDP ranks stems from their disagreement over the continued leadership of Senator Iyorchia Ayu as the PDP national chairman, following the selection of Atiku Abubakar as the PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections. Additionally, the G-5 leaders expressed their opposition towards Atiku, who eventually lost to APC’s Bola Tinubu, now the President of Nigeria.

Sources suggest that the G-5 leaders have been in contact with Tinubu, raising concerns among PDP members about their loyalty to the party. Governor Wike, in particular, has made multiple visits to Tinubu at the Presidential Villa since the inauguration on May 29, casting doubt on his continued affiliation with the PDP.

In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Raymond Magen, a former Principal Special Assistant to Ortom, revealed that in-depth discussions are underway between the APC and the five opposition leaders, indicating the possibility of their defection in the coming months. Magen emphasized that these talks are not superficial but rather substantive conversations between the PDP leaders and the ruling APC. He suggested that the G-5 members may join the APC due to their apparent disinterest in the affairs of their current party.

Diran Odeyemi, a member of the PDP National Executive Committee, commented on the situation, stating that the upcoming appointments by President Tinubu would shed light on the intentions of the G-5 leaders. He noted that if some of them were to join the new government, it would signal their inclination to leave the PDP. Odeyemi expressed concern about the potential emergence of a one-party state if party leaders abandoned their respective parties instead of working towards strengthening them.

While it is premature to definitively predict the actions of the G-5 leaders, their recent statements and interactions suggest a shift in their priorities and a potential alignment with the APC. The coming months will likely shed more light on the direction they choose to take.

Former Governor Wike, G-5 Members Make Tinubu’s ministerial list

Former Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and members of the G-5 camp have reportedly been included in President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial list, according to reliable sources.

The list, comprising the first batch of nominees, is expected to be submitted to the Senate this week, with more appointments to follow at a later date.

As per constitutional requirements, the President is tasked with appointing a minister from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to assist in the governance of the country.

During his tenure, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed 44 ministers, with some states receiving two ministerial positions. Sources indicate that the first batch of nominees consists of technocrats, aligning with President Tinubu’s vision of revitalizing the economy at a rapid pace. The Sunday Tribune also revealed that the list includes serving senators from both the Northern and Southern regions.

According to one source, President Tinubu aims to form a performance-driven Federal Executive Council, and thus he has actively sought highly skilled technocrats to aid him in implementing his Renewed Hope Agenda, which resonated with the Nigerian electorate. The President recognizes the importance of departing from traditional practices in ministerial appointments and has already demonstrated this approach in Lagos State, where he has shown an aptitude for talent spotting. With this in mind, he is assembling a proficient team to tackle the country’s challenges head-on.

Notably, the list reportedly includes a former Chief Executive Officer of a commercial bank from the South-West who ventured into partisan politics in 2020. This individual, a Fellow of Chartered Accountants (FCA), is anticipated to be assigned to the Ministry of Finance, where their expertise will prove valuable.

Furthermore, it has been revealed that President Tinubu intervened in the selection of a nominee from Kano State due to the ongoing conflict between the immediate past governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, and his predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Tinubu, extending a courtesy to former President Buhari, is said to have allowed him to present a nominee from Katsina State.

A source confirmed that the President is meticulously selecting individuals whom he believes will bring value and drive the country forward, especially in economic matters. The first batch of the list is reportedly prepared, with finalization expected during a meeting with the President on Monday.

PoS agents in Lagos increase charges for withdrawal, transfer.

Residents of Lagos State will soon experience an increase in charges for money withdrawals and transfers through Point of Sale (PoS) transactions. The Lagos State chapter of the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN) has resolved to implement a fee of N500 for cash withdrawals of N10,000.

Stephen Adeoye, the Public Relations Officer of AMMBAN in Lagos, announced the new charges during an interview with Channels Television on Saturday. He stated that the association aims to eliminate price discrepancies in the industry through the implementation of a standardized price list.

Adeoye provided details of the new charges, stating that withdrawals ranging from N1,000 to N2,400 would incur a fee of N100. Withdrawals from N3,500 to N4,000 would attract a fee of N200, while withdrawals from N4,100 to N6,400 would incur a fee of N300. The charges increase gradually based on the withdrawal amount, with withdrawals from N8,500 to N10,900 incurring a fee of N500. The prices continue to rise for higher withdrawal amounts as specified in the association’s price list.

Regarding deposits and transfers, agents can now charge N100 for amounts ranging from N1,000 to N4,900. For amounts from N5,000 to N10,900, a fee of N200 would be applicable. The charges increase further based on the transaction amount, with N300 for N11,000 to N20,900, N400 for N21,000 to N30,900, N500 for N31,000 to N40,000, and N600 for N41,100 to N50,000.

It is worth noting that these new charges contradict the assurances made earlier by Victor Olojo, the National President of AMMBAN, who stated in January that the association had no plans to increase service charges. Additionally, in February, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) released emergency telephone numbers for reporting PoS agents charging above N200 for withdrawals up to N10,000.

However, according to Adeoye, the chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the association, David Abiodun, recently released the new price list during a symposium attended by executive members. The purpose of the list is to regulate the activities of agents who continue to overcharge their customers.

Enforcement of the price list will be facilitated through the association’s collaboration with the police and the establishment of task forces in their operational areas. Adeoye stated that they have a good relationship with the Lagos State Command and the police force, and task forces will be set up in each zone to ensure compliance. AMMBAN will also leverage its registration system and collaboration with the CBN to enforce the price list effectively.

In a cautionary statement issued on Saturday, Primate Elijah Ayodele, the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, expressed his skepticism towards the outcome of the cases brought by presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) against President Bola Tinubu at the tribunal.

Primate Ayodele went on to describe Tinubu’s victory as a spiritual triumph, claiming that the phrase “Emi Lokan” carries significant spiritual and positive energy. He asserted that Atiku and Obi are wasting their time attempting to remove Tinubu from power, as they underestimate his determination and spiritual prowess.

According to the clergyman, Tinubu possesses a spiritual desperation that only divine intervention can overcome. Ayodele further emphasized that Atiku and Obi are mere noise-makers who rely on internet rants, questioning whether such online activities can secure them victory. He firmly believed that Tinubu’s success is entirely of a spiritual nature.

Atiku and Obi are not ready, they think Tinubu will just sit down and fold his hands? He (Tinubu) will put all the lawyers and judges in one calabash and throw them inside water.

Regarding the Senate, Ayodele predicted that under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio, it would become a rubber stamp, lacking seriousness and opposition. He suggested that even the most radical members would be silenced, leading to a potential exodus of opposition politicians to join the ruling party.

Primate Ayodele’s remarks indicate his reservations about the prospects of Atiku and Obi’s legal challenges against Tinubu, while also expressing his concerns about the future trajectory of the Senate under Akpabio’s leadership.

WWE Money in the Bank 2023 results: Damian Priest, Iyo Sky win, John Cena returns

WWE Money in the Bank 2023 live results: Damian Priest and Iyo Sky win, John Cena returns.

“It is time to seize the opportunity of a lifetime at Money in the Bank by ascending the ladder, securing the briefcase, and making your mark.

In a historic turn of events, Money in the Bank will be held outside of the United States for the first time in its 16-year history. The thrilling ladder-match event will take place at London’s The O2 Arena.

In addition to the highly anticipated men’s and women’s matches, there will be five other exciting bouts on Saturday afternoon. Among them are three title matches, namely the women’s tag team championship, the intercontinental championship, and the world heavyweight championship. Furthermore, Cody Rhodes is set to face Dominik Mysterio in a clash known as “The Judgment Day,” while the ongoing saga of The Bloodline will reach another dramatic chapter in their “civil war” as Jimmy and Jey Uso square off against the undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa.

2023 Money in the Bank live results and champions

Feel free to save this page as a bookmark! The list provided below will continuously be refreshed with real-time updates, including the names of winners and detailed information about the matches as the event unfolds.

Men’s Money in the Bank match: Ricochet vs. Shinsuke Nakamura vs. LA Knight vs. Santos Escobar vs. Butch vs. Damian Priest vs. Logan Paul

Is The Judgment Day about to be one of the best factions in WWE?

It came down to crowd-favorite LA Knight vs. Damian Priest at the end of the Money in the Bank match, but the Priest was able to convert a broken arrow off the top of the ladder to knock LA Knight down and secure the briefcase to secure a title shot.

Later on, Priest proclaimed himself “Señor” Money in the Bank.

Women’s Tag Team Championship Match: Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler (c) vs. Raquel Rodriguez and Liv Morgan

What a turn of events that was.

Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler were dominant for much of the match, but one of the most random moments happened when Baszler turned on Rousey − with no warning − and began to attack her. Morgan was shocked, as Baszler left the ring, and Rodriguez delivered the final punch to pin Rousey, reclaiming the titles they never lost.

Intercontinental Championship Match: Gunther (c) vs. Matt Riddle

The reign of the “Ring General” continues, as Gunther handled Riddle for the majority of the match, forcing him to submit to retain the Intercontinental Championship.

But the fireworks weren’t over. After the match, Drew McIntyre returned to the ring for the first time since WrestleMania 39. There have been questions whether McIntyre would return, but showing up to headbutt and land a claymore on Gunther showed we have a renewed rivalry for the title.

    Cody Rhodes vs. Dominik Mysterio

The “American Nightmare” became the “England Nightmare” with a seemingly easy win over Mysterio.

Mysterio landed some quality moves, along with WWE Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley interfering a couple of times. But Rhodes has much more experience, and with the crowd overwhelmingly behind him, secured the victory.

    John Cena returns

Even overseas, John Cena is still finding ways to shock WWE.

After Cody Rhodes defeated Dominik Mysterio at Money in the Bank in London, Cena’s “The Time is Now” started blaring inside the O2 Arena, sending the crowd in a frenzy as Cena emerged from the tunnel.

Donning his typical gear, Cena made it to the ring and did his usual antics, before finally taking to the mic.

    “Surprise!” Cena said.

Women’s Money in the Bank match: Zelina Vega vs. Becky Lynch vs. Zoey Stark vs. Bayley vs. Iyo Sky vs. Trish Stratus

Damage CTRL might be done, but I don’t think Iyo Sky will mind, as she is the new Ms. Money in the Bank.

The match was full of high-flying and some extreme moves, but the turning point was Bayley knocking Sky off the ladder just as she was about to grab the briefcase. It was then between Bayley and Becky Lynch, but Sky reappeared with handcuffs to lock Bayley and Lynch together in between the ladder. Sky climbed over her Damage CTRL leader to grab the briefcase.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Seth “Freakin” Rollins (c) vs. Finn Bálor

Bloodline Civil War: The Usos vs. Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa

Additionally, they will receive substantial allowances for medical treatment abroad as part of their retirement benefits.

The impacted top military officers include General Lucky Irabor, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff; Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya, the Chief of Army Staff; Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, the Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, the Chief of Air Staff.

The benefits of a retiring CDS and service chiefs were listed in Section 11.8 of the HTACOS 2017, a revised version of the HTACOS 2012. They included one bulletproof SUV or equivalent vehicle to be maintained by the service and replaced every four years; a Peugeot 508 or equivalent backup vehicle; and five domestic aides comprised of two service cooks, two stewards, and a civilian gardener.

Each has an Aide-de-Camp/security officer, a special assistant of the rank of lieutenant/captain or equivalent, or a personal assistant of the rank of warrant officer or equivalent, and nine standard guards of nine troops.

The immediate past CDS and service chiefs are also entitled to three service drivers, one service orderly, escorts from relevant military units/formations as needed, and free medical coverage in Nigeria and overseas.

They must also keep all military uniforms and equipment, as well as personal weaponry, during suitable ceremonies. Such firearms, however, must be reclaimed by the relevant services upon the death of the beneficiaries.

Section 11.19 of the HTACOS 2017 also listed the retirement benefits of a Lieutenant General for the Nigerian Army, Vice Admiral for the Navy, and Air Marshal for the Air Force as two Peugeot 508 cars or one Toyota Land Cruiser, two cooks, two stewards, four residential guards, one service orderly, two service drivers, and $20,000 in annual medical treatment in the country and abroad.

Meanwhile, numerous Major Generals and their equivalence in the Navy and Air Force are anticipated to apply for voluntary retirement by Monday, after the President’s nomination of a new CDS and service chiefs.

The HTACOS, on the other hand, include a Peugeot 508, a cook, a steward, two residential guards, one service orderly, one service driver, and free medicals in Nigeria and abroad worth $15,000 per year for a Major General in the Army, Rear Admiral in the Navy, and Air Vice Marshal in the Air Force.

Colonels, Captains, and Group Captains in the Army, Navy, and Air Force are scheduled to receive a Peugeot 301 or another car of comparable worth, as well as free medical coverage in the country.

However, the harmonised service conditions stated that for Major Generals, Brigadier Generals, Colonels, and their counterparts in the Navy and Air Force, all perks might be monetised for retiring officers.

In comparison, the 2012 version of the HTACOS provided for one security car to be maintained and replaced every four years by the respective service, as well as the retention of all military uniforms and accessories to be worn during suitable occasions.

In addition to personal firearms, which must be retrieved by the relevant services upon the beneficiaries’ deaths; three domestic civilian aides (cook, gardener, and steward), or cash in lieu; an Aide-de-Camp/security officer; six standard guards; one service driver; and one service orderly for retiring Generals, CDS, and service chiefs in Section 09.17.

Which Zodiac Sign Makes The Best Partner And Lover?

The concept of a “bestpartner or lover based solely on someone’s zodiac sign is subjective and depends on individual preferences and compatibility. Astrology can provide insights into personality traits and compatibility between signs, but it’s important to remember that astrology is not a definitive science and should be taken with a grain of salt.

That being said, people often look for compatibility between signs in various ways. Some may consider signs that share similar elements (fire, earth, air, or water) to be more compatible, while others may look for complementary qualities between signs.

Which Zodiac Sign Makes The Best Partner And Lover

For example, some traditional beliefs suggest that signs like Taurus, Cancer, and Capricorn are good partners due to their loyal and committed nature. On the other hand, signs like Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are often seen as good lovers due to their ability to communicate and connect intellectually.

Ultimately, it’s important to remember that astrology is just one factor among many that can influence a successful partnership or romantic relationship. Factors such as shared values, communication, trust, and emotional compatibility are equally, if not more, important in building a strong and fulfilling connection with a partner.

  • Outrage on Twitter as Obi deletes tweet addressing Tinubu as president

Outrage on Twitter as Obi deletes tweet addressing Tinubu as president

Outrage on Twitter ensues as Obi deletes tweet addressing Tinubu as president.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has faced severe criticism after deleting a tweet in which he addressed President Bola Tinubu as “Mr. President.” This move has generated negative reactions on social media, with many people faulting Obi for his actions.

Obi, who is challenging President Tinubu’s declaration, had initially criticized the President’s convoy in the deleted tweet. He wrote, “Allegedly showing Mr. President moving with about a 120-car convoy. While I have not had the opportunity of seeing the said video, my advice remains consistent – that sacrifices for a better Nigeria must start from the leaders at all levels of government.”

Later, Obi deleted the tweet and posted a new one, replacing the mention of the “120-car convoy of ‘Mr. President‘” with “a trending motorcade video.” In the revised tweet, he wrote, “We can’t continue to preach for the people to sacrifice without sacrificing too. The sacrifices must now start from the leaders, visibly, and measurably at all times, because the people are suffering. We must now be at the forefront of addressing the suffering.”

Many social media users criticized Obi for succumbing to the pressure of his “supporters,” while others called him out for deleting the tweet. Former media aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari, Ahmad Bashir, condemned Obi’s action, expressing pity for him and questioning his lack of control and opinion.

Various Twitter users expressed their views on Obi’s tweet deletion. Some criticized him for frequently deleting tweets, suggesting that he either lacks foresight before approving them or his social media handler is irresponsible. Others highlighted Obi’s fear-driven deletion as a sign of his inability to stand on his own, claiming that he would have been a puppet if he had won the election. There were also comments advising him to be careful not to accidentally delete his entire Twitter handle.

In response to the backlash, Taiwo Ajakaye commented on Obi recreating the tweet to suit the demands of online mobs. Daniel Regha noted that Obi’s deletion of the tweet was unnecessary, as the presidential election tribunal is still ongoing, and it does not imply acknowledgement or admission of defeat. @Woye1 suggested that Obi should also delete another tweet concerning the housing deficit.

Overall, Obi’s deletion of the tweet addressing President Tinubu as “Mr. President” has sparked controversy and drawn criticism from various social media users.

Belarusian President, asks Wagner mercenaries to train his military

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has extended an invitation to Wagner Group mercenaries to provide military training in his country. Lukashenko hinted at this invitation during a speech on Belarus‘ Independence Day, as reported by state news agency Belta.

Lukashenko stated, “Unfortunately, they (Wagner mercenaries) are not here. And if their instructors, as I already told them, come and pass on combat experience to us, we will accept this experience.”

This invitation comes just a week after Lukashenko played a crucial role in diffusing an armed rebellion by Wagner forces against Moscow. In a series of dramatic events that posed a significant threat to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin had directed his forces towards the Russian capital, taking control of military facilities in two Russian cities. Prigozhin claimed this action was a response to a Russian military attack on a Wagner camp.

During his speech, Lukashenko expressed fearlessness towards the Wagner Group members, stating that he had known them for a long time. He described them as individuals who fought around the world to establish a civilized society, while also claiming that the West held deep animosity towards them.

Lukashenko also warned of an impending “world-scale military-political crisis unprecedented in the history of mankind” and criticized the West for its failure to recognize the need for dialogue in resolving the situation. He accused the European Union and the United States of rapidly arming Poland and using it as a proxy training ground against Belarus and Russia, drawing parallels to the situation in Ukraine.

Moreover, Lukashenko claimed to have convinced Putin not to “destroy” the Wagner group and its leader, Prigozhin. He suggested that Prigozhin would have met a dire fate had the Wagner troops continued their advance towards Moscow, comparing it to crushing a bug. However, the exact whereabouts of Prigozhin remain unknown.

Interestingly, Lukashenko’s speech coincided with the closure of a Russian media group affiliated with Prigozhin. The Patriot media group, which includes outlets such as the Federal News Agency, People’s News, Economy Today, Nevskiye Novosti, and Politics Today, announced the cessation of its operations and departure from the country’s information landscape. The CEO of the Federal News Agency, Yevgeny Zubarev, revealed this development and highlighted that the Patriot suite of websites had attracted a significant traffic of 300 million unique visitors.

Furthermore, Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor reportedly restricted access to media sites associated with Patriot. Prigozhin, the founder of the private military company Wagner, had recently held a position as the deputy head of Patriot’s supervisory board.

Exciting News? FG Introduces Borehole Tax following the Failure of Water Bill

Borehole Tax To be implemented in Nigeria.

In a significant development, the Ministry of Water Resources, acting upon the approval of President Bola Tinubu, is preparing to implement a new policy that could potentially reshape the landscape of water management in Nigeria. This forthcoming initiative aims to introduce a borehole tax, imposing financial obligations on the owners of boreholes throughout the country.

    Borehole tax In Nigeria

Reliable sources have confirmed that under this proposed policy, a fixed percentage of 5% from the overall expenses incurred in drilling a borehole will be designated as the borehole tax. This tax will be levied directly from the owners, constituting a mechanism to generate revenue while ensuring compliance with regulatory measures.

Senate throws out Buhari’s controversial Water Resources Bill

This comes months after the controversies surrounding the water bill, which was rejected by the 9th National Assembly. The assembly deemed the bill introduced by former President Muhammadu Buhari as an anti-people’s bill.”

The rationale behind this new taxation system for boreholes appears to stem from a multifaceted approach. Firstly, it seeks to address the growing concern over the sustainability and equitable distribution of water resources across Nigeria. By allocating funds from the drilling costs, the government intends to enhance the maintenance and upkeep of existing boreholes, thereby ensuring a consistent supply of clean and potable water to communities.

Furthermore, this borehole tax initiative underscores the government’s objective to encourage responsible water usage and promote alternative solutions. By introducing a financial obligation, borehole owners are encouraged to consider other water sources or explore sustainable practices, effectively mitigating the strain on groundwater reserves and fostering conservation efforts.

As this policy unfolds, it is crucial to examine its potential implications on both a micro and macro level. How will individuals, particularly those in rural areas, bear the burden of this taxation? Will the generated revenue be effectively utilized to improve water infrastructure nationwide? These are essential questions that demand thoughtful analysis and scrutiny.

Critics argue that this borehole tax may disproportionately impact individuals who heavily rely on boreholes as their primary source of water, especially those residing in regions with limited access to public water supply systems. Additionally, concerns about the equitable distribution of tax revenue and transparency in its utilization have been raised.

While the Ministry of Water Resources, under the guidance of President Bola Tinubu, maintains that this policy is a necessary step towards ensuring long-term water resource management and sustainability, it is imperative for stakeholders, water experts, and the general public to engage in a thorough dialogue to examine the potential ramifications and benefits of this proposed borehole tax.

As the implementation of this policy draws nearer, it is crucial for the government to foster transparency, encourage public participation, and address the concerns of those who may be affected by the new taxation scheme. Only through open dialogue and collaborative efforts can we strive for an effective and equitable water management system that meets the needs of all Nigerians.

Anambra killings: Lawyer requests release of panel report

A former chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, Onitsha Branch, Mr John Ifijeh, has called on the acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to release the report of investigation into the allegations of extra-judicial killings, organ harvesting, high-handedness and corruption levelled against some senior police officers at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Awkuzu, Zone 13 Command in Ukpo-Dunukofia, Anambra State.

The previous IG, Usman Baba, had formed a special investigative team to look into the claims.

The Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, stated in a statement on February 17 that the findings of the investigations would determine the next course of action, while promising that the police would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that justice was served in the case and sanctions were meted out to any officers found guilty.

Ifijeh, speaking at a news conference in Onitsha on Friday, said the report should be publicised and appropriate punishments should be imposed on any officers found guilty.

According to Ifijeh, the conference was a stakeholder engagement session aimed at interacting with victims and family members of those who perished as a result of extra-judicial killings in order to provide solutions and justice.

“It is a serious concern to us that the report of the investigation panel set up by the immediate past IG on the allegations of extra-judicial killings in Anambra has not been released five months after it was formed,” he said, flanked by other members of the branch.

He suggested that the Police Service Commission distribute the panel findings to the media and the public to demonstrate that things would no longer be business as usual.

“A lot of people have been victims, and they are looking to the police for justice,” he continued.

“We appeal to the new IGP to release the detailed report,” said a victim’s family member, Uche Anozo. My younger brother, who had recently returned from abroad, was framed up by the police and his bank account was depleted.

  • Nigerians Cry Out as Prices of Tomatoes, Peppers Skyrocket Under Tinubu’s Govt

Nigerians Cry Out as Prices of Tomatoes, Peppers Skyrocket Under Tinubu’s Govt

Nigerians have cried out as price of Tomatoes and Peppers Skyrocket under Bola Tinubu’s Government.

In most regions of the country, there is growing concern about the deteriorating tomato and pepper shortages, for which buyers and sellers offer various explanations.

Consumers bemoan the shortage and excessive pricing, while businesses bemoan the low customer base.

Speaking to Saturday Ejes Gist, farmers and dealers cited the devastating Tuta Absoluta, also known as tomato ebola, the removal of fuel subsidies and how it affected transportation, and the wet season as the main causes of the commodity’s shortage and sudden disappearance from marketplaces.

Although the scarcity of tomatoes and peppers was largely a yearly occurrence, Mrs. Abiodun Farayola, a tomato vendor in Mowe, Ogun State, told one of our correspondents that the elimination of the petrol subsidy and the subsequent increase in petrol prices had made it more difficult for people to buy tomatoes.

Happy New Month of July 2023 Messages, Wishes, Prayers and Quotes for now

On Lagos Island, however, Saturday Ejes Gist learned that a tomato-based paint sold for up to N5,000 in Lekki and N8,000 in Victoria Island.

A bag of Scotch bonnet peppers sold for N3,000 at the Jakande market as opposed to N1,000 at the beginning of the year, and a basket of tomatoes went for N50,000.

Some vendors who sold the products claimed the price increase prevented them from restocking.

Mrs. Bumi Jadesola, a different tomato vendor in Magboro, Ogun State, attributed the price increase to the sickness that had decimated tomatoes during the previous five months.

She said, “The Tomato Ebola that damaged the product in the North caused the prices of tomatoes and pepper to initially spike early this year.

Personally, I obtain roughly seven trucks of tomatoes from my farm, but I could only collect three when the infestation happened, and many other farmers had the same experience.”

“The recent removal of subsidy also affected us because we were already facing an infestation, then we had to transport our products at a ridiculously high cost to different parts of the country,” he said.

“There is no way we won’t see a rise in tomato prices this way.” The second possibility is that we do not generate any money, which is unthinkable because we must continue farming.”

On the other hand, noticed that the market was returning to normal in comparison to recent weeks.

    Tomato association reacts

The President, Tomatoes and Orchard Producers Association of Nigeria, Mr Bola Oyeleke, who spoke with one of our correspondents, link the scarcity of tomatoes to the disease outbreak, fewer tomato farmers and high temperatures in the North.

He added that farmers  recover from the loss they suffered during the cash crunch when most of them sold their produce at giveaway prices.

Oyeleke said, “During the rainy season, only a few farmers venture into the production of tomatoes, due to financial constraints. The rains came early this year but in the North, there was intense heat which affected the plant. The continuous rain also comes with a lot of bacteria and fungi diseases that affect the plant.”

The TOPAN president further decried farmers’ inability to access loans and grants, saying it was the reason why small-scale farmers were pulling out from the production of tomatoes this year.

Oyeleke added that the tomato ebola experienced earlier in the year also contributed to the scarcity. He noted that the price of tomatoes from the North on Friday sold between N27,000 and N32,000, adding that it would remain so until next month

“We need government intervention and private and individual partnership in the sector,” Oyeleke added
