Suspend all actions on Mmesoma, House Reps ordered, as they strongly criticise JAMB

The House of Representatives has strongly criticized the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for its handling of the case involving Mmesoma Ejikeme, who was accused of inflating her 2023 UTME result.

The lawmakers expressed their concerns about the manner in which JAMB withdrew the minor’s result and imposed a three-year ban on her.

In response, the House of Representatives has formed an adhoc committee to investigate the matter. They have also requested that JAMB refrain from taking any further action until the investigation by the House is concluded.

Mmesoma, in a viral video, explained that she obtained her result from the JAMB portal and was taken aback when she heard accusations of result forgery. She stated that she printed the result from the JAMB portal and expressed her distress at being accused of forging her own result, emphasizing that she is not capable of such an act.

JAMB, on the other hand, maintains that Mmesoma manipulated her result and insists that her claimed score of 362 was actually 249.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program, Mmesoma asserted that she should not be blamed for the controversy surrounding her result and expressed her dissatisfaction with the ban imposed on her, deeming it unfair.

Mmesoma’s father, Romanus, echoed her sentiments, stating that JAMB has treated his daughter unfairly. He mentioned that Mmesoma has displayed exceptional abilities since her primary school days. He further added that he has no intentions of seeking legal redress and has decided to leave everything in the hands of God.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have closed their case at the Presidential Election Petition Court sitting in Abuja.

Tinubu continued his defense in the court proceedings, presenting witnesses. Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the current Senate Majority Leader, was called as the first witness. He outlined his qualifications and legal background, including being a licensed solicitor in the US and a member of the Nigerian Supreme Court Council.

Ejes Gist News reports that the star witness for Tinubu and the APC confirmed that Tinubu is involved in a drug case in the United States of America and did not score 25% in FCT.

During cross-examination, INEC stated that they had no further questions. The APC and its witness engaged in questioning regarding Tinubu’s citizenship, lack of indictment in the US, and previous court judgments. Atiku’s legal team presented exhibits, including the US judgment, and questioned the witness on Tinubu’s involvement in Kano and the percentage of votes he received in the FCT.

    Case No.: CA/PEPC/05/2023
Parties: ATIKU Vs INEC, TINUBU, APC

    TINUBU CONTINUES HIS DEFENSE
    Begins presentation of witnesses.

Olanipekun-SAN: Matter for continuation of hearing. We are ready to proceed.

Calls first witness, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele – Current Senate Majority Leader.

The witness started by presenting his resume (CV), stating that he is a licensed solicitor in the US and a member of the body of benchers in Nigeria. He also mentioned being a member of the Nigerian Supreme Court Council.

Eyitayo Jegede-SAN raised objections to the witness giving oral evidence while being examined in chief, insisting that he should only adopt his witness statement. Eyitayo referred to the 1st Schedule of the Electoral Act, which allows the witness to adopt his deposed statement and objected to the witness reading out his CV, which was not part of his deposed statement.

Jegede further objected to the tendering of the witness’s CV before the court, but the court admitted the CV.

The witness also tendered a report by Election Observers from the ECOWAS, which was admitted by the court following another objection by the Atiku legal team.

Recall that on Monday, Atiku also tendered to the court the EU Election Observers’ report, which disagreed with the credibility and transparency of the 2023 Nigeria Presidential Election. The EU report, besides stating that INEC didn’t follow the rules and the Electoral Act in conducting the elections, also mentioned that the figures reported by INEC are only 31% mathematically correct.

Meanwhile, Tinubu’s witness stated that approximately 10,000 votes supposed to be for Tinubu were discounted in Kano.

During Cross-Examination, INEC stated that it had no questions.

Doumbouya has a military background and is a member of the Guinean Special Forces Group. Prior to his involvement in politics, he served as a French legionnaire. Not much is publicly known about his early life and education.

Following the coup, Doumbouya assumed the role of Interim President and took charge of the transitional government in Guinea. He became the de facto leader of the country and has been serving in that capacity since October 1, 2021.

As Interim President, Doumbouya has taken steps to address governance issues and has promised to establish a transitional government that will pave the way for democratic elections in the future. W = witness; Bat/Shett = Tinubu and Shettima.

Bat/Shett: After conferring with my colleagues, the evidence of this witness is sufficient. WE WILL NOW END OUR CASE WITH THIS WITNESS.

APC: On a very sober reflection, it is our belief that there is no need to call any witnesses. We have decided that we have ESTABLISHED OUR CASE too.

Court: Do we take that to mean that we have closed our own case?
APC: yes. Case closed. If I were Livy, we would just withdraw our case.

Livy: So you are afraid of further damage to your case?

LP: The court made that order relying on money laundering provisions?
    W: Section 982, not 981

LP: Give him Exh RA9, the letter from the IG of Police. Please confirm that you never saw the letter written by the IG of the police.
    I saw it.

LP: Did you tender it here?
    They tendered it.
    LP: Did you see it?
I saw it, and it was tendered.

LP: Is that what you have?
W: What I have is the response.
LP: Does that make any reference to the Chicago case?
W: Yes, it does for the general record.

LP: You know what money laundering is?
    W: Yes
LP: Kindly confirm before my Lords that this particular decision at the US Court has nothing to do with money judgement.
    W: Yes

Bat/Shett: No re-examination, and we apply to discharge the witness.

    Court: You are hereby discharged.
INEC We object to the admissibility of this document and will give reasons in the final address.

Bat/Shet: My Lords I don’t know why counsel failed to let my Lord know that they were already tendering an exhibit in this matter. (Noise from the court, people saying it’s a PDP matter.) Oh, from PDP matter. Anyway, we oppose it and will give reasons.

APC: We oppose and will give reasons.
Court: The CTC of the EU observation Report is Admitted as ExhX2.

LP: May I request the exhibit? I want to read page 60, paragraph 620. “By the time of the declaration of the result, more than a quarter of the results were missing on IREV and others were blurred without a good reason.”

LP: Please read paragraph 17 of the ECOWAS document he tendered.

“Incidents of violence and killings, including the murder of an Enugu senatorial candidate and five others who lost their lives in Kano due to the opposition party…”
I don’t agree because I will attribute it to IPOB.

LP: You do not have a licence to practise Law in the state of Illinois.
I have a licence to practise Federal Law across the United States.

LP: With the forfeiture of $450,000 in the account of 2nd Res, the courts made an order, which the court made as a result of proceeds of narcotics? Can you confirm?
W: Yes, I read it, and it represents Civil proceedings…

LP: You aren’t an IT expert, are you?
    W: I am not
LP: Is it correct that you have not tendered any licence for you to practise Law in New York? Yes?
    W: Yes

LP: I want to put it on record that the American Bar Association is a voluntary association.
W: It is a Voluntary association as long as you are a member of the bar.

LP: All through this presidential saga, have you accessed IREV?
I didn’t have any reason to

LP: Therefore, it is correct that since you haven’t accessed it, you are not in a position to say whether the results there are readable.
    W: That’s incorrect.

LP: Have you read the order made by the court in Chicago?
    W: Yes
Court: The American Bar Membership Card is admitted as RA28.

APC: As a member of the American Bar, do you know that Sen. Bola Tinubu is a citizen of Nigeria?
    W: Yes

    LP cross-examination
LP: In your witness statement on Page 136 of Para 56 (in Roman numerals), you mentioned that you are going to rely on international observers, is that correct?
    W: Yes

LP: Take a look at this document.
    W: Yes
LP: That’s the European Union report on The Nigerian election, right?
    So it seems
LP: I seek to tender this document.

Court: But aren’t these the same cards?
    APC: Yes
Court: Then why are you tendering both?
APC: Even if it’s one, it will suffice, my Lord.

They issue a new card every now and then.
Court: Which one is the latest one?
W: This one (proceeds to show the court)
    INEC, BAT/Shett: No objection

LP: I vehemently oppose these purported membership cards.

Bat/Shett: in Paras. 19 and 114, where you referred to a letter from the 2nd Petitioner forwarding the membership list to INEC and also a register of members of the 2nd Petitioners from Anambra State as of April 25, 2022, If you see it, will you recognise it?
    W: Yes

Bat/Shett: They are Exh RA17 and RA18. That will be all from our own part on the Examination in Chief.

    Cross Examinations:

INEC: Distinguished senator, I have no question for you.

APC: Most distinguished senator, you were a former chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary And appointed majority leader of the APC just yesterday?
    W: Yes

APC: Exh RA18, which you just confirmed as the register of members of LP, does not contain Peter Obi as a meme vet of LP?
    W: Yes

APC: As a US practitioner, you know that there cannot be a charge, and apart from the charge, there cannot be a conviction.
    W: Yes

APC: Look at Exh RA8 and RA9; as a practising attorney in the US and Nigeria, you know that those give the second respondent a clean record.
    W: Yes

APC: Look at PA5. It does not contain a conviction or sentence on the face of it, right?
    W: Yes

APC: Do you have your membership papers from the US?
    W: Yes

APC: I seek to tender three documents evidencing membership in the New York bar as evidence.

Court: But this one looks like a complimentary card?
APC: No, but we won’t tender that one anymore.

Anambra Govt Lambasts JAMB, Distances Itself From Its Claim Against Mmesoma Ejikeme

The Anambra State Government has strongly criticized the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over their recent claim regarding the authenticity of Mmesoma Ejikeme’s result. The government has explicitly stated that it has no association with JAMB’s assertion that Mmesoma’s result, from Anglican Girls Secondary School (AGSS) in Nnewi, is fake.

Mr. Paul Nwosu, the Commissioner for Information, expressed that the investigation into the matter was still ongoing when JAMB issued a press release alleging the result’s falsity. In a statement released on Wednesday, Nwosu mentioned that the student and her school approached him, stating that she had obtained a score of 362. However, JAMB recognized another individual who scored 360 as the highest scorer.

Nwosu explained that the Commissioner for Education intervened in the situation, prompting the involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS) to conduct an investigation. However, before the investigation could be concluded, JAMB disclaimed Mmesoma’s result.

He said a full investigation had been launched, naming the members of the committee to include: Prof. Nkemdili Nnonyelu (Chairman), Prof. Mercy Okonkwo – member, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh – member, Prof. Maduabuchi Dukor – member, Prof. Jaja Nwanegbo – member, Rev. “Anambra State Government has, for obvious reasons, been following the JAMB/Mmesoma Ejike matter with keen interest.

“It’s important to note that Miss Mmesoma Ejike went to the office of the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh with her UTME result to protest that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) didn’t recognise her as the candidate with the highest score.

“The Commissioner in turn called JAMB to confirm her claim, but she was told that Mmesoma’s result was forged.

“It was at this point that JAMB authorities invited the Directorate of State Services (DSS) to investigate the matter and make its findings known.

“This was yet to happen when JAMB went public with the matter, thus eliciting the raucous conversations we’ve seen in the media,”Nwosu said.

  • Tinubu, Shettima present LP membership register in proof of claim Obi not party’s member

Tinubu, Shettima present LP membership register in proof of claim Obi not party’s member

President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima submitted a copy of the Labour Party (LP) membership register for Anambra State as evidence to support their argument that Peter Obi is not a registered member of the party.

Pay Attention To Nigerian newspapers headlines today July 5, 2023: 12 things you need to know

In response to a petition filed by Obi and the LP, Tinubu and Shettima contended that Obi, who ran for the 2023 presidential election under the LP’s banner, was not qualified to do so since he was not a party member at that time.

During the defense proceedings at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), their lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), presented the LP membership register and a letter dated April 25, 2022, from the LP, which was addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Read Also Outrage as RCCG Pastor, an INEC Witness, Refuses to Swear with the Holy Bible

These documents were submitted alongside other relevant materials. Obi and the LP’s lawyer, Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), objected to the admission of these documents. However, the court overruled the objection and admitted them as Exhibits RA17 and RA18, respectively.

In the news reports available, Peter Obi resigned from his former party, PDP on May 24, 2022, joined LP on May 27, and clinched LP’s Presidential ticket in the LP Primary on May 30, 2022. PDP’s Presidential Primary was held on May 28. This means that Peter Obi who was still a member of PDP on May 23, 2022 and could not possibly have been included in LP’s membership register which should have been forwarded to INEC by April 30, 30 days before it’s Primaries on May 30. But, what does this mean? Does it mean that Peter Obi was not a member of LP for the purposes of the May 30 Primaries? In fact, if PDP had forwarded its own membership register 30 days before its May 28 Primaries, that is, on or before April 28, 2022, it’s more likely that Peter Obi’s name would have appeared in PDP’s register.

What is the reason for having to be included in a membership register which must be transmitted to INEC before a primary election? Is it to prevent non-party members from being sneaked in to vote in the primaries? Does non-inclusion in the membership register vitiate a person’s candidature? Can it be reasonably concluded that if Peter Obi was not included in the membership register of LP, it raises the question of who sponsored him (since his name may still have been in the PDP membership register) and whether he was lawfully sponsored by LP for the February 25 election? What is the fate of a person who joins a party after the membership register has been submitted to INEC? Does it mean that individual is not considered to be a member of the party, until such a time that the register may be updated, possibly after the primary elections have been held? Or in the alternative, even if Peter Obi had become a member of LP which he publicly joined on May 27, does his non-inclusion in the LP membership register affect his qualification as the LP Presidential candidate, in view of the mandatory provision of Section 77(3) of the EA? Notwithstanding the membership register, does a political party not reserve the right to confirm who its members are? Or is it of no significance whatsoever, if a person’s name is not included in the membership register before the party primaries, as long as they become a member before the primaries?

On the contrary, perhaps, it can also be argued that whether or not Peter Obi’s name was included in LP’s membership register 30 days before the Primaries is not an issue because: (1) Section 77(3) does not provide that if a candidate’s name is not included in a membership register, it means that such a candidate isn’t a member of the party and/or cannot participate in the party primaries; 2) that INEC monitored the Primaries in which Peter Obi emerged as the LP Presidential Candidate, and INEC was therefore, aware that he is a member of LP and was sponsored by LP; 3) that by virtue of Section 84(5) of the EA, LP forwarding Peter Obi’s name to INEC as its Presidential candidate is prima facie evidence that LP sponsored him; 4) that Section 131(c) provides that a candidate must be a party member, sponsored by that party, and it is not only by the membership register submitted to INEC that Peter Obi’s membership of LP could have been ascertained.

Security agencies urged to probe Kogi politicians allegedly instigating violence

The Kogi State Government has called on security agencies to invite politicians expressing “sadness over the death of a criminal for questioning”.

Kingsley Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, stated this in a statement on Tuesday.

He noted that residents of the state have thrown their weight behind actions being taken by security agencies to rid the state of crimes.

Fanwo, therefore, stressed that there were no extra Judicial killings in the state, noting that “some naysayers and purveyors of violence who were hard-hit by the recent onslaught on criminals in the state want people to believe.”

    Read Also

The statement read, “The Kogi State Government wishes to state clearly and unequivocally that the good people of the state are totally in support of actions being taken by the security agencies to rid the state of crime and allow the peace that has been enjoyed over the years to endure.”

“If there is anyone on the streets protesting against the peace and security of the state, that person must immediately be regarded as a criminal whose trade has been cut short by the “zero tolerance for criminality” approach of the security agencies.”

“We want to state clearly that there are no extrajudicial killings in the state, as some naysayers and purveyors of violence who were hard-hit by the recent onslaught on criminals in the state want people to believe.”

“They have been mourning a criminal, gunrunner, and kidnapper who was taken down by security agents after his attack on security operatives in the state. We cannot sacrifice the peace of the state on the altar of violent politics.”

“The need for us to clear the air on the matter is occasioned by a purported protest by ill-informed political agents in wigs, who are clearly acting the script of sponsors of violence in Kogi State.”

“The protest was a deliberate act to misinform the general public and create an impression of crisis in the confluence state ahead of the Guber poll. It was a part of a list of activities that was drawn up by some unpopular political actors who desperately want power and are banking on using killers and criminals to achieve their blood-drenching ambition.

“We wish to inform members of the general public that the Kogi State Government will continue to make deliberate and legally certified efforts at ensuring peace and security in the state, as that remains the principal responsibility of the Government. Politicians harbouring criminals with the intent of disturbing the peace of the state will always have security agencies to contend with.”

“We again call on security agencies to invite politicians expressing sadness over the death of a criminal for questioning. Our people should go about their normal business without let or hindrance, as Kogi will be made safe before, during, and after the poll. We are Kogi, and we will keep our state safe.”

  • Why we concede ministerial appointment to Wike instead of Abe – Rivers APC

Why we concede ministerial appointment to Wike instead of Abe – Rivers APC

Major stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State have made a strong plea to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, for ministerial appointments.

The stakeholders, organized under the Amalgamated Bola Tinubu Campaign Council Rivers State, led by Chief Tony Okocha, emphasized the significant role played by Wike in securing Tinubu’s victory in the state during the February 25 presidential election.

Read Also Alleged forgery: Accused father says he has no plans to sue JAMB.

Addressing the press during a briefing in Abuja, Okocha dismissed the recent political maneuvering of Magnus Abe, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), as a cheap political stunt. He urged the public to disregard Abe’s sudden attempts to position himself prominently in Tinubu’s political circle, especially after leaving the APC when his support was most needed.

Read Also Gunmen burn police van, disperse market women

Okocha attributed the APC’s victory in the state to the efforts of Governor Nyesom Wike, who played a crucial role in keeping the party united when other major stakeholders turned their backs. He explained that even in challenging circumstances, Wike’s leadership was instrumental in maintaining cohesion within the party.

Drawing attention to the electoral results, Okocha highlighted the political impact of Wike’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State. He noted that in the state House of Assembly, PDP secured victories in all 32 seats, while also winning 12 out of the 13 House of Representatives seats and all three senatorial seats. However, PDP did not win the presidential election in the state.

Okocha further emphasized the pivotal role played by the G-5 governors, who insisted on addressing certain issues and power shifts before fully supporting the candidacy of Atiku Abubakar. He stressed that Wike, as the spin doctor, played a critical role in ensuring the success of Tinubu’s campaign.

Referring to the extensive network of polling units and agents across Rivers State, Okocha questioned who financed the thousands of agents associated with the APC during the elections. He argued that the activities of the G-5 governors were instrumental in securing Tinubu’s success, as evidenced by the victory in 12 states compared to the PDP’s 10 states.

Okocha expressed his firm belief that Wike’s contributions to Tinubu’s victory in 2023 should not be overlooked. He acknowledged that, as the last man standing when others had left, he could have claimed all credit for himself but recognized the significant role played by Wike. Okocha emphasized that no politician in Rivers State could rival Wike’s influence and that he should be duly rewarded for his efforts.

While dismissing Magnus Abe’s recent media stunts as opportunistic, Okocha made it clear that seeking political appointments should not be the primary motivation. He urged others to prioritize the value that Wike brings to the table and invited them to embrace his involvement rather than using it as a means for personal gain.

Okocha criticized those who now sought to eulogize Tinubu after abandoning him for other parties, only to return when he emerged victorious. He asserted that such actions lacked common sense and reason, and should not be driven solely by the desire for political appointments.

Miss Mmesoma Ejikeme’s father has denied plans to seek legal remedies after the Joint Administration and Matriculation Board (JAMB) accused her of faking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Ejikeme Romanus denied media claims that the family had taken JAMB to court and demanded N20 billion for purported manipulation of facts.

According to reports, Mmesoma sought a restraining order on JAMB and any of its officials from providing any more comments on the suspected falsified results until further notice while seeking a court injunction.

“The 362 score she received was what she saw in the SMS sent to her by JAMB after submitting her code to the portal.” That’s the same score she’d been using for almost two months prior to the scandal.

Ejikeme challenged JAMB to quit defending itself and inform the entire world the truth, describing a purposeful delay in publishing the actual results of the highest scorer.

“I’m surprised that JAMB kept quiet all this time until they came up with another result,” he continued. But, as a father, I’ve realised that JAMB purposefully delayed releasing the claims in order to create something they could use to defend themselves.

“The new score they claim my kid received is not her result. It’s awful that the same people who were meant to give her an award for finishing first are instead tearing her down.

“All this time, my daughter has been crying, and we’ve been telling her that nothing is too difficult for God to do.” She is upset that not only was her outcome changed, but she is also being wrongly accused of something she did not commit.

“How can they accuse my daughter of such allegations when she is not a JAMB employee?” When journalists came to interview her, I asked them, “Does the person you’re interviewing appear fraudulent?” Only a moron could commit such a heinous crime in my opinion.

“My daughter studies so diligently that even if you ask her to go to bed late at night, she will insist on reading more.” She rarely sleeps since she wants to study Medicine and Surgery, especially during exams. So, after all the tension, someone will claim that her outcome was fabricated.

“On what we intend to do, there is nothing else we can do but insist that JAMB tell us the truth.” They should cease defending themselves and tell the truth to the entire world. Even if my daughter is required to take this exam multiple times, I am confident she will excel. She’s my child. She has never finished second in a class.

“Besides, my two girls and two boys are all brilliant.” If you want, you can go talk to their teachers. Just that, as I previously stated, we don’t make a fuss about it. The probe should be carried out by the Soludo panel as well. I’m not interested in hiring lawyers; let justice be served.

Mrs. Uchekwukwu Edum, Principal of Anglican Girls Secondary School (AGSS), Nnewi, where Miss Mmesoma Ejikeme studies, also spoke out, expressing surprise at the statement invalidating her score.

When the news of the alleged forgery came on Sunday, she stated the school was still awaiting the results of a thorough inquiry by the Department of State Services (DSS).

“We’ve been at DSS making statements and waiting for the investigation,” she explained. I was amazed that no one had heard from us, only for JAMB to issue a statement disparaging our pupil.

“All I can say is that we were in school at the time when they (students) were scratching and checking their results.” The first person had 295 points, the second had 265, and so on. We were still working on it when Mmesoma arrived with her own result, which was 362; we asked that she provide evidence, and when she did, we cheered with her.

“So, later we learned that there was someone (from another school) who got 360 and that she was the highest, so we had to contact the diocese’s education secretary.” Because our school is a mission school, we decided to contact the commissioner about this. So the commissioner contacted JAMB, who informed him that there was no such thing, causing misunderstanding number one.
