Fuel subsidy removal: Brace for more shocks, LP tells Nigerians

The Labour Party’s leadership has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidies, cautioning the public to prepare for additional unexpected and unpleasant developments.

LP’s Acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, issued a warning in a statement titled ‘Removal of Fuel Subsidy, First of Many Shocking Policies to be Expected’ on Tuesday evening in Abuja.

    Fuel subsidy removal

The government has removed the fuel subsidy. The 16th President of Nigeria, Tinubu, expressed his excitement during his inaugural speech at Eagle Square in Abuja following his swearing-in ceremony.

Ifoh has criticised the president’s action, stating that it was a unilateral decision made without consulting with organised labour and other relevant stakeholders.

The party has expressed regret over the adverse impact that the removal of petroleum subsidies is having on Nigerians, which may lead to increased hardship for them in the near future.

According to the LP image maker, a significant number of petroleum marketers have commenced the sale of gasoline at exorbitant prices, reaching as high as N750 in certain states. This has resulted in numerous motorists expressing their dissatisfaction as queues have resurfaced at filling stations.

In a recent statement, the Labour Party expressed concern over the sudden increase in petrol prices in Nigeria. The party has highlighted that less than 24 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office, citizens were faced with the harsh reality of petrol prices skyrocketing to N600 per litre, with black market prices reaching as high as N750 per litre. The new administration’s announcement of the immediate removal of subsidies on gasoline has caused a stir.

Nigerians are once again experiencing long queues at filling stations, reminiscent of the previous administration. Many are now forced to keep vigil in order to obtain just a few litres of gasoline. In response to recent developments, commercial transporters have raised their trip fares nationwide, as anticipated. Product hawkers have regained their dominance in the market.

The current situation bears a striking resemblance to the tales of a particular Pharaoh who, upon ascending to the throne, authorised his taskmasters to triple the daily workload of the Jewish people based on mere speculation. The announcement of his emergence as the new sheriff in town was quite a spectacle. President Tinubu’s initial executive decree has been perceived as a measure that could potentially cause hardship for the Nigerian populace.

According to Ifoh, the Labour Party had put forth a proposal to terminate the subsidy regime during the previous election campaign. However, he clarified that the party had stipulated that such a move would only be made if appropriate policies and palliative measures were implemented.

He stated that the removal of subsidies, a sensitive decision, should have been implemented gradually and after thorough consultation with stakeholders. He emphasised the need to consider the input of various parties, as several refineries would require recalibration to achieve optimal functionality.

The sudden removal of subsidies by presidential decree, which occurred yesterday, has left the Nigerian populace in a state of shock and surprise. Nigerians are being advised to prepare themselves for further unexpected developments in the coming days.

Labour has strongly criticised President Tinubu for his unilateral decision to remove the petroleum subsidy without consulting with stakeholders, particularly the labour unions. This move has resulted in increased hardship for Nigerians.

The Labour Party has expressed concern over the closure of petrol stations and depots by operators, citing the negative impact on the public. Critics have contended that the execution of the policy lacked clarification. The government is being urged to promptly reassess its policy and devise a more feasible strategy for eliminating the subsidy without endangering the nation’s stability.

In a statement, he urged various unions, social activists, and Nigerians to remain vigilant and prevent any attempts to derail democracy, regardless of the means or guise.

Update on fuel prices in Nigeria

Fuel in Nigeria now sells for between $500 and $750.

Buhari’s Govt owes NNPCL N2.8trn – Mele Kyari, See details

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), said the Federal Government has a subsidy payment deficit of N2.8 trillion owed to the company.

The Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, addressed reporters at the Presidential Villa in Abuja following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

Kyari confirmed the President’s announcement in his inauguration speech that the subsidy regime would come to an end, stating that it was a necessary move as the current system was no longer viable.

During a recent briefing, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPCL) Group Managing Director, Mele Kyari, expressed concern over the significant subsidy burden that has hindered the corporation’s ability to allocate funds towards its primary operations.

Kyari was accompanied by Farouk Ahmed, the Authority Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Mainstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

Petrol queues have reappeared across the country since Monday, prompting observations from concerned citizens. According to one individual, the queues are understandable as fuel marketers are seeking to comprehend the implications of the president’s recent announcement that “subsidy is gone.”

According to the source, the ambiguity surrounding the statement has led to a surge in demand for the product, resulting in long lines at gas stations. The government has reportedly pledged to implement measures to alleviate the impact of the subsidy removal.

According to his statement, no payment has been received from the Federation since the allocation of N6 trillion in 2022 and N3.7 trillion in 2023.

According to sources, the Federal Government has reportedly been unable to fulfil its financial obligations, resulting in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) providing financial support for the subsidy. Despite fulfilling our fiscal obligations of taxes and royalty, we are still left with a balance that is being funded from our cash flow, which has become a challenging situation and is impacting our other operations.

The company is facing a significant challenge as it is unable to retain a portion of its cash for investment in its core businesses. The issue has been brought to the attention of the government multiple times, with the company emphasising the need for compensation and reimbursement from the NNPC for the funds expended on the subsidy.

Today, the nation is facing a financial shortfall that has made it impossible to fund subsidies. The initiative is expected to yield a gradual increase in value. The matter at hand is not a question of capability, as the current circumstances do not permit such an expense and the other party is unable to settle their outstanding balance. The question at hand is the current amount owed by the federation to NNPC.

Today, there is anticipation for the settlement of up to N2.8 trillion of NNPC’s cashflow from the subsidy regime. The ongoing delay in this settlement is hindering further progress.

Tinubu Cannot Unilaterally Remove Fuel Subsidy – TUC Dares President

Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to eliminate fuel subsidies.

TUC stated that Tinubu cannot unilaterally decide to eliminate petroleum product subsidies in the country.

Before making a decision on the “delicate” matter, the TUC stated that the newly inaugurated President should “wait a while to allow for robust dialogue and consultation and stakeholder engagement.”

Before such a decision could be made by the President, according to the Congress, a number of issues must be considered and resolved amicably.

The TUC stated in a statement co-signed by its President Festus Osifo and Secretary General Nuhu Toro, “Nigerian workers and the general populace must not be made to suffer the inefficiency of successive governments.”

On Monday, during his inaugural address at the Eagle Square in Abuja, Tinubu stated that the era of fuel subsidy payments has ended, adding that neither the 2023 budget nor the justification for subsidy payments exist.

“The fuel subsidy has been eliminated,” Tinubu declared, noting that his government would instead invest in infrastructure and other areas to bolster the economy.

Since then, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has supported Tinubu’s proposal to eliminate fuel subsidies.

Since the president’s announcement, fuel lines have reemerged across the nation as Nigerians search for the premium product.

However, the TUC stated that the President cannot unilaterally remove subsidies, citing the reason why the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari delegated this “sensitive issue” to the new government.

The TUC stated, “While listening to Tinubu’s inaugural address, we were initially encouraged by his pledge to lead as a servant of the people (rather than a dictator) and to always consult and dialogue, especially on key and complex national issues.”

Also Read: Scrap Niger Delta Affairs Ministry, Kalu Tells Tinubu, gives reason

“However, we were shocked, even horrified, when he announced the withdrawal of subsidies on petroleum products. If by this he means increases in pump prices and the exploitation of the populace by unregulated and exploitative deregulated prices, then it’s a joke taken too far.

“It is not for nothing that the Buhari administration pushed this issue onto the new administration, but we expect the Tinubu administration to be prudent on such a sensitive matter and be more explicit in its pronouncement to avoid contradictory interpretations when comparing his written statement, what he said, and the provision in the 2023 appropriations act.

“We dare to say that this is a very delicate issue that affects the lives, if not the very survival, of the working class. It should have been handled with the utmost care and preceded by a robust dialogue and consultation with the representatives of the working class, including professionals, market people, students, and the poor masses.

“Accordingly, we hereby demand that President Tinubu delay his departure to allow for robust dialogue, consultation, and engagement with stakeholders, as he suggested in his speech, until all issues and questions – and there are many! – are considered and resolved amicably. Workers and the general populace of Nigeria must not be forced to endure the inefficiency of successive governments.”

Shots fired at EFCC Lagos office

From within the barricaded premises of No. 15 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, taken over by the Department of State Services (DSS) from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), shots have been fired.

Since Tuesday morning, armed DSS personnel have sole control of the premises, which were previously shared by both organisations.

Armed and accompanied by two armoured vehicles, agents of the government’s secret “police” have prevented EFCC personnel from entering their offices on the premises.

Shots were fired just as journalists from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) approached the locked gate of the property to take close-up video footage.

The shots appeared to have been fired as a warning into the air.

Outside, none of the journalists and EFCC employees were injured.

There has been a silent dispute between the two agencies over the usage of the premises for the past two decades.

Since the establishment of the EFCC by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003, the DSS and EFCC have shared the original DSS headquarters.

It has been learned that both agencies have attempted unsuccessfully to resolve the ownership dispute through discussions.

The EFCC condemned the blockade of its largest office in Lagos, Nigeria.

It described the occurrence as “strange” and added that the lockout has impacted the Commission’s operations, which involve over 500 employees, hundreds of exhibits, and a large number of suspects in detention.

Wilson Uwujaren, the Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, warned in a statement that the siege has resulted in suspects being detained without proper care, which has grave repercussions.

It stated that its cases scheduled to be heard in court in Lagos on Tuesday have been cancelled and that it is unable to question a large number of suspects.

Despite photographic and video evidence, the DSS denied barring EFCC personnel.

Dr. Peter Afunaya, the agency’s spokesman, stated in a statement that the building belonged to his organisation.

“It is incorrect for the DSS to have prevented the EFCC from entering its office. No. It’s not the case. The Service only occupies its own facility when carrying out its official and legal responsibilities, according to Afunaya.

The adjournment is to allow the APM’s lawyer, Shehu Abubakar, and other parties to obtain copies of the Supreme Court’s May 26 decision on the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) appeal challenging the APC’s nomination of Shettma, which the PDP called “double nomination.”

Wole Olanipekun (SAN), lawyer to the President, Bola Tinubu, and Shettima, observed that the Supreme Court judgement has an effect on the APM’s petition, which deals solely with the same issue of Shettima’s nomination.

Olanipekun promised to obtain a copy of the judgement and deliver it to the court within two days. He also stated that he hopes to meet with the petitioner’s lawyer to determine whether the APM will continue with its case in light of the judgement.

Abubakar stated that he needed time to obtain the judgement, study it to determine its impact on his client’s case, and decide what next steps to take.

The APM petition is one of three currently pending before the PEPC against the February 25 presidenti
