Give Students One-Week Holiday To Go And Vote — Peter Obi Beg Universities

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has urged university authorities to give students at least, a one-week holiday to be able to vote in the forthcoming elections.

Speaking at a meeting on Monday evening with members of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM), obi said there are over three million students who are eligible to vote.

“I am sure INEC will do the right thing. I am sure the universities will give them the break to go and vote. It is important because it is about their future. This election is about these young people and I’m sure they will allow them to go and vote. We will continue to mention it to them as we go along,” Obi said.

“For me now, what is important is ensuring that people collect their PVCs. There are some areas where people are still complaining that they are being denied their PVCs for one reason or the other. INEC must give them attention.

“But I must give INEC credit for extending the date for the collection of PVC, but again I urge them to ensure that people collect their PVC. This election is very important to Nigerians. It is an existential election. We want all those that have registered to participate.”

He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for extending the deadline for the collection of permanent voters cards (PVC).

In his remarks, Barry Andrews, chief observer of the EU-EOM, said the meeting was a routine one for the purpose of interacting with leading presidential candidates and other stakeholders in the February 25 presidential election.

“It is part of our work, we are having meetings with all the stakeholders in this very important election here in Nigeria. We have met with important participants including Labour Party today,” Andrews said.

“We also met with APC and PDP candidates. We also met with the minister of foreign affairs earlier today, the vice president, civil society, and the media.

“What we are doing is trying to develop a picture of transparency, inclusivity, and credibility of the election. And we will report that, two days after the election in a preliminary report in a press conference on the 27th of February.

“We are in the very early stages. We have been meeting and people have a collective sense of deepening the very root of democracy and we think we can play a part but we won’t be making any conclusion until after the election.”

What are the Facts Influencing Foreign Exchange Rate of dollars to Naira

Here are some of the reasons for the dollar-to-naira exchange rate’s decline.

Inflation Rates: It is common knowledge that inflation has a direct impact on black market exchange rates. The naira will benefit if the Nigerian economy can be stabilised and inflation is brought under control; however, if the naira continues to fall, it may indicate that food and other necessities are becoming more expensive on a daily basis.

Interest Rates: Interest rates are another tool to keep an eye on. If the interest rate at which banks lend money rises, the economy will contract, and the value of the naira will fall as a result.

Government debt has the potential to affect investor confidence and, as a result, the flow of funds into the economy. If inflows are high, the naira exchange rate will rise in its favour.

    Speculators:

Speculators have a significant impact on the naira-to-dollar exchange rate. They hoard money in anticipation of a profit, causing the naira to fall even further.

Trade Conditions: Although Nigeria is currently running a trade deficit, favourable trade terms will lead to an increase in the value of the Nigerian currency to the dollar. China, India, and the majority of Asian countries supply everything.

  • President Buhari’s Heart Is Not With Tinubu —Igbokwe

President Buhari’s Heart Is Not With Tinubu —Igbokwe

President Buhari’s heart is not with Tinubu, says Camsir Igbokwe

These are not the best of times for the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The other day, the director, Civil Society Liaison, in the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Hajia Naja’atu Muhammad, resigned from the PCC and the APC. She has been spilling the beans regarding her association with Tinubu. She said, among others, that everything about the APC presidential candidate revolved around money. Besides, there are doubts about the cordiality of Tinubu’s relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari and some key figures in his party.

Last week, the former Lagos State Governor could not bear the internal heat anymore. At the APC campaign rally in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, he said the powers that be wanted to scuttle his chances at the election. He snarled: “They are full of mischief. They want to create fuel crisis; they have started creating fuel crisis. But forget about it, put your mind at rest. I am assuring you, I, Asiwaju, will end fuel scarcity. Let the price of fuel continue to increase, they are the ones that know where they are hoarding it. They are hoarding naira notes, they are hoarding fuel. We will vote and we will win. If they like, they can change the ink in the naira note, we will shock them. We will win the election.”

Recall that during the run-up to the APC presidential primary election last year, Tinubu, in the same Abeokuta, cried out over what he felt was an attempt to edge him out of the presidential race. He reeled out how he helped Buhari to become President, blurting out his now famous quote, “emilokan” (It’s my turn). As he reportedly put it, “It is my time. I’m educated. I’m experienced. I have been serving people for a long time. Bring me the presidency, it is my turn.”

Tinubu and his handlers have repeatedly denied any rift with the President. When negative reactions trailed his “emilokan” statement last year, Tinubu recanted. According to him, he has high regard and respect for Buhari and will never denigrate him. He said he only desired a level-playing ground for all aspirants and an adherence to stipulated rules and due process.

Also, when he and his handlers realized the implications of his latest statement in Abeokuta, they went for damage control. In a statement, director, media and publicity APC Presidential Campaign Council, Bayo Onanuga, said Tinubu did not mention, blame or accuse President Buhari for the current challenges in the country.

“Asiwaju Tinubu was only averting government’s attention to the sabotage being carried out by some fifth columnists in the system, possibly working in cahoots with the PDP,” he said.

Excuse me! Here is a presidential candidate of a ruling party denouncing the policies of his own government and someone is telling us cock-and-bull stories! The PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, hit the nail on the head. Atiku, through his special assistant, public communication, Phrank Shaibu, said Tinubu had become frustrated by his inability to stop the cashless policy and currency redesign of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that would curb vote-buying in the forthcoming election.

The point here is that the APC and its presidential candidate have engaged in unsuccessful attempts at a whitewash. Why is it that, out of the 18 presidential candidates, only Tinubu is crying foul over the naira redesign? On the eve of the 2019 presidential election, two bullion vans entered his premises on Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. Is he angry because this may not be possible anymore with the new CBN policy?

It is becoming increasingly clear that Buhari’s heart is not with Tinubu. On the eve of the primary election of the APC in June last year, the national chairman of the party, Abdullahi Adamu, announced that the consensus presidential candidate of the party was Senate President Ahmad Lawan. Adamu reportedly said then that he arrived at the choice after consultation with Buhari. The plot failed because other National Working Committee (NWC) members refused to ratify the decision. Since then, Buhari has been doing some other things, which subtly indicate that he has lost favour with Tinubu. Forget the public show of raising his party’s candidate’s hand at rallies. Do you expect him to do otherwise? As President from the ruling party, he cannot openly show support for another candidate. That would be sacrilegious! I strongly feel he is tagging along with his party’s candidate just to fulfill all righteousness.

Elder statesman, Tanko Yakasai, had this same feeling. He said recently that he was doubtful if Buhari was happy with the candidature of Tinubu: “Definitely, the personality of Tinubu doesn’t make him happy from my assessment of the situation.”

The Presidency attacked him, saying the times were hard and the old man, perhaps, needed a bit of help. Buhari’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said Yakasai’s questioning of the loyalty of Buhari stood in sharp contrast with the actions of the President. He cited Buhari’s attendance at a rally in Bauchi in support of the standard-bearer of the party as an example. Saying Buhari was scheduled to make further appearances at campaign events in the coming weeks, Shehu added that the President’s support for Tinubu was unquestioned.

Shehu is doing his work. He couldn’t have said otherwise. The President had maintained on many occasions that he would leave a legacy of free and fair elections to Nigerians. Sometime in March 2022, at the national convention of the APC in Abuja, he warned politicians to de-emphasise money politics. He enjoined the new NWC members to ensure that party primaries were not influenced by “highest bidders.” Contrary to the President’s admonition, the highest bidders still had their way.

To further show how aloof Buhari is from his party’s candidate, he stated recently that “Nigerians should vote for whoever they like from whichever party. Nobody will be allowed to mobilize resources and thugs to intimidate people in any constituency. That is what I want to go down into Nigerian history for.”

What is not very certain is the candidate Buhari is rooting for. It may shock you to know that it may not even be Atiku Abubakar.

Intrigue is the name of politics in Nigeria. We have seen and will still see a good dose of it before the crucial presidential election coming up on February 25, 2023. The onus is on Nigerians, especially voters, to dispassionately examine every political message coming their way and refuse to be fooled this time. As progressive Nigerians have continued to say, we must take back our country. The wiles of the wicked ones will not succeed this time.

The Obi-Datti Campaign Organisation has disclosed that the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is not in talks with the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over a possible alliance.

Ejesgist News reports that Atiku hinted at his readiness to work with Obi and the New Nigerian People Party’s candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, after meeting with the duo to support his ambition in the forthcoming election.

BREAKING: Atiku confirms possible deal with Kwankwaso

Atiku made this known in a 15-minute interview with BBC Hausa service on Tuesday.

Speaking with the interviewer in the Hausa language, Atiku said both Obi and Kwankwaso were not a threat to his chances of winning at the February 25 poll.

“Although I see no threat in any of them, we are in talks, and the discussion might yield a positive result that will see one of them coming.”

But reacting to the claim on Wednesday in an exclusive chat with The PUNCH, the Obi-Datti campaign organisation spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, said those making the alliance claim are just trying to exploit Obi’s popularity.

“As of yesterday, before we left Numan, there was nothing of such nature. We are busy with campaigns. We are not aware of anything like an alliance.

“I think somebody is just trying to cash out on the Obi-Datti ticket. We are right now campaigning in Sokoto and we will be in Zamfara.”

Efforts to get the spokesperson for the New Nigeria Peoples Party were futile as he did not pick up his calls as of the time of filing this report

A few weeks before the general election, members and chieftains of some major political parties in Ondo State have defected to the Labour Party.

The defectors are from the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party in the Akoko South-East/Akoko South-West Federal Constituency of the state.

At the event, held in Isua Akoko, the headquarters of the Akoko South-East Local Government Area of the state, the defectors also declared support for the presidential candidate of the LP, Mr Peter Obi.

One of the leaders of the defectors and former House of Representatives aspirant of the APC, Mr Stephen Adeyeri, said Obi’s impeccable track records coupled with his detailed manifesto containing the solutions to myriads of challenges troubling the nation, spurred him and his supporters to join the Labour Party and openly declared his firm support for the presidential candidate.

The former presidential candidate noted that securing 25% of the vote for Tinubu is still insufficient to help him defeat Atiku.

The Rivers State PDP has taken a swipe at the state governor, Nyesom Wike, over the cancellation of the approval granted for the party’s presidential campaign in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The spokesman for the PDP PCC in the state, Dr Leloonu Nwibubasa, who stated this in an interview with our correspondent, also said the governor lacked integrity for not naming his preferred presidential candidate in January as he promised.

Nwibubasa said from all indications, the governor was increasingly frustrated.

On Wednesday, the state government cancelled the approval given to the PDP for the rally of its standard bearer to hold in the state on February 11, 2023.

The cancellation was contained in a letter signed by the state Commissioner for Sports, Christopher Green, and addressed to the Director General, PDP PCC, Aminu Tambuwal.

The letter said credible information available to the state government showed that the PDP PCC was working in collaboration with a faction of the All Progressives Congress in the state led by Tonye Cole.

It added that information at the government’s disposal show that activities of the APC in the state have always been marred by violence due largely to irreconcilable internal conflicts within the party.

It added, “The Rivers State Government is unable to risk damage to or destruction of the very valuable and priced asset, the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, which your use of the same in collaboration with your Tonye Patrick Cole APC faction will expose it to.

“In the circumstance, the Rivers State Government has come to the painful but inevitable decision to withdraw the approval earlier given to you for the use of the stadium and the said approval is hereby withdrawn.”

Nwibubasa, while confirming the development, described the state government’s earlier approval as a Greek gift.

Berating Wike, Nwibubasa further said the governor was not a good fighter, because a good fighter knows when to quit.

Nwibubasa stated, “We are not surprised when certain decisions are taken because it all amounts to the fact that the level of frustration is increasing.

“We will only appeal to him that he should return to his party and return to the part of peace. And that is part of honour. No one fights a war and refuses to evaluate the same war, and knows when to call it quits. He is not a good fighter.

“For the presidential candidate of the PDP, we are very certain that Rivers people are happy with him. They are in love with him and they are going to vote for him en masse come February 25, 2023.”

Asked what he thinks about Wike’s inability to name his preferred presidential candidate as he had promised, he said it shows the governor has no integrity.

“His inability to name his preferred candidate as publicly announced in January, again is a pointer to his level of instability and incoherence.”

“It tells of his integrity that he cannot match his words with action. So, for us, it is painful that we have a governor who says one thing and does the other.

“In the circumstance, the Rivers State Government has come to the painful but inevitable decision to withdraw the approval earlier given to you for the use of the stadium and the said approval is hereby withdrawn,” he added.

Mr Wike’s fallout with the standard bearer of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, does not seem to have an end in sight. The outgoing governor has continued to use state resources, when he could, to present serious obstacles in the way of Mr Atiku’s presidential bid. In December 2022, he sealed off the PDP’s campaign office for “noisy” political activities.

Crack in Wike’s G-5, Ikonne’s death unsettles Abia PDP as Governor Ikpeazu agrees to work for Atiku

According to a PDP chieftain, Governor Ikpeazu has agreed to work for Atiku Abubakar.

Ahead of the forthcoming presidential election, chances are that the Governor of Abia State, Okozie Ikpeazu might dump the G-5 governors to retain his political relevance following the death of Prof. Uchenna Ikonne, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the March 11 governorship election in the State.

Recall that Ikonne died on January 25 at the National Hospital Abuja. His demise was confirmed by his son, Chikezie, in a statement he issued on behalf of the family.

The governor had confirmed that Ikonne was ill and assured that he was recovering gradually and progressively, adding he would be strong enough in the future to join political campaigns. But that did not happen.

Ikonne, a former vice-chancellor of the Abia State University Uturu, ABSU, was Ikpeazu’s preferred candidate for the 2023 governorship election and he ensured Ikonne emerged against all obstacles.

Leading up to the announcement of Ikonne as the winner by the Chairman of the PDP governorship primary for Abia State, Chief Ayo Fayose, the gubernatorial primary in the State was reportedly characterised by a massive withdrawal of aspirants, who all cited “illegalities and irregularities” on the delegates list.

Governor Ikpeazu belongs to the Governor Nyesom Wike-led G-5 governors who have been embroiled in a political battle with Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, over the control of the party.

Ejesgist News had earlier reported that the G-5 Governors and other aggrieved party members have been clamouring for the resignation of the PDP National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, shortly after a northerner, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, won the party’s presidential ticket.

Meanwhile, on Friday last week, the PDP announced a fresh governorship primary election to produce Ikonne’s replacement.

This is following the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, directive to the party to conduct a fresh election to replace the deceased.

The directive relied upon the provisions of the New Electoral Act on the replacement of candidates caused by death.

The party said a fresh primary would be conducted on Saturday, February 4, 2023.

“All interested aspirants are requested to collect Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms from the PDP Headquarters at Wadata Plaza, Wuse Abuja.

“The sale of both forms begins Friday, January 27, and ends on Wednesday, February 1. Screening of aspirants will be held at the PDP National Headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Thursday, February 2 at 11:00 am prompt”, Abia PDP Vice Chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, noted.

A top party official in the State, who is also part of the government, confided to Ejesgist News that Governor Ikpeazu would be working for Atiku in the presidential election.

He said the PDP in Abia is working for Atiku Abubakar and does not see the chance of Governor Ikpeazu working for any other candidate.

He said, ”Our party (PDP) is intact. The national leadership of the party will do the right thing by giving us a good candidate. The party has made a publication to that effect that those who want to contest should go and purchase their nomination and notification of interest form. The death of Ikonne has nothing to do with G-5 governors. So we are one family.

”I am not the governor; he is entitled to his choice of support. He is a full PDP person, and I don’t see him having any other candidate, but I am not his spokesperson. Abia is PDP.

”We are one PDP family; we are working together. PDP in Abia State is working for Atiku Abubakar. We are one party. We are not divided; there is nothing like the Atiku camp and the G-5 camp in Abia State. PDP is one united family.”

Also, speaking to our correspondent, Mr Paul Ibe, the media aide to Atiku Abubakar, said he believed that all hope was not lost in finding common ground and resolving the issues.

Mr Ibe also said the issues centred around the election and nomination of the vice presidential candidate of the party.

He acknowledged that some negotiations have happened that might be outside the public knowledge.

“I am aware the leadership of the party has reeled out guidelines, starting with the procurement of forms, screening, and all of that. And so far, so good; I don’t think there is any challenge right now. As I said, it is the responsibility of the Abia leaders, stakeholders, and, most importantly, the delegates.

”This opportunity, as tragic as it is, reinforces the indivisibility of the PDP as a party. The election is going to be conducted by PDP. The governors, whether of the Abia State or any other State, are PDP governors. They will pursue the PDP agenda.

”I believe that all hope can never be lost in terms of finding common ground and resolving the issues around the election and nomination of the vice presidential candidate because that was what generated all of this.

“A resolution is underway because everybody realises that we all need to stand united around a common cause to oust the APC and recover and rebuild Nigeria. And everybody is aware of that, whichever side of the divide they may be,” Mr Ibe said.

Meanwhile, Governor Ikpeazu has assured members and supporters of the PDP in Abia State and across the country that the party remains strong, viable and united.

He gave the assurance at a meeting with PDP national leaders at the Government House, Umuahia.

The governor also informed the delegation that the State caucus met and agreed to retain the ticket in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, where Ikonne hailed from.

The National Working Committee (NWC) members included the Deputy National Chairman Amb. Umar Damagum, the National Secretary, Sen. Sam Anyanwu and the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN.

FG Fires Back at El-Rufai for Accusing Presidency of Working Against Tinubu’s Victory

‘FG not aware of anyone working against Tinubu’ – FG tells El-Rufai

The Federal Government stated on Wednesday that it was “officially unaware” of any entity in the Presidential Villa working against the victory of Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

It also stated that President Muhammadu Buhari was not favoring or disfavoring any presidential candidate ahead of the election on February 25.

Read Also: BREAKING: Some Persons In Aso Rock Working Against Tinubu – Nasir El-Rufai

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, told State House Correspondents after this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by the President at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, “We do not officially know if anyone is working against any candidate.”

Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, claimed that certain “elements” in Aso Rock are working against Tinubu’s election to be presidenct.

El-Rufai, speaking on the Channels Television breakfast show Sunrise Daily, explained that the individuals in question were upset that Tinubu defeated their candidate in the APC presidential primary held in June 2022.

He cited the redesigned naira policy as one of several schemes aimed at APC presidential candidate Tinubu, who made a similar claim a week prior.

El-Rufai states, “I believe there are elements in the Villa who want us to lose the election because they did not get their way; they had their candidate.” Their candidate lost the primary election.

“They are attempting to cause us to lose the election by hiding behind the President’s desire to do what he believes is right.

I will provide two examples: this petroleum subsidy, which costs the country trillions of Naira, was agreed to be eliminated by all parties.

“In fact, I discussed this with the President and demonstrated why it had to be eliminated.

‘FG to El-Rufai: We are not aware of anyone working against Tinubu’

Because how is it possible to have a N200 billion capital budget for federal roads and then spend N2 trillion on petroleum subsidies?

This was a discussion I had with the President in 2021, when the subsidy issue began to escalate. He was persuaded. We left. It evolved. Everyone in government agreed, and the policy was altered.

“The second illustration I will provide is the redesign of the currency. You must comprehend the President. People are blaming the Central Bank Governor for the redesign of the currency, but No. You must examine Buhari’s first public appearance as president.

“He did this; the Buhari-Idiagbon regime changed our currency in secret with the intention of catching those hiding illegal funds. It is a very noble goal. The President is correct. However, doing so within the allotted time frame makes no political or economic sense.”

On Wednesday, however, in response to a question about the issue, Mohammed argued that the Buhari administration has treated all candidates impartially, regardless of their party affiliation.

He said, “On a more serious note, I can assure you that this administration is focused and determined to ensure a free and fair election regardless of who is in office.

Supreme Court fixes date to rule on suit against Ahmad Lawan senatorial candidacy

Supreme Court has set a date for deciding the lawsuit filed against Ahmad Lawan senate bid

The Supreme Court set date for the decision in the protracted legal dispute over the legitimacy of the All Progressives Congress, APC’s senatorial candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District.

Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, the current Senate President, and a man named Bashir Sheriff Machina are involved in a legal dispute over the senatorial candidacy.

After hearing from the attorneys for Bashir Sheriff Machina and the All Progressives Congress APC, the Apex Court set the judgment date for February 6.

The date was set by Justice Centus Chima Nweze, who presided over a five-judge panel of the Court.

The APC appealed the rulings of the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal that named Bashir Sheriff Machina as the party’s candidate for senate against Senate President Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan.

The APC argued in its arguments presented by Sepiribo Cromwell Peters that the primary election held on May 27, 2022, which produced Bashir Sheriff Machina, was illegal because it was carried out by unlicensed individuals.

He asserted that the primary election that produced Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on June 6 was the real primary election for the party.

Also Read: JUST IN: Strong Ally of a prominent Northern Gov. Dies in Atiku Rally (Photo)

However, Mr. Sarafa Yusuff, Bashir Sheriff Machina’s attorney, asked the Apex Court to reject the APC’s appeal because it was baseless and frivolous.

He revealed to the Supreme Court that the primary election was managed by the APC’s National Working Committee on behalf of the Danjuma Manga Committee, which was established by the party.

Yusuff drew the court’s attention to an affidavit filed by Danjuma Manga, who claimed that the APC National Secretariat had appointed him and five other people to oversee the senatorial primary elections in Yobe State.

The attorney argued that the APC had not yet refuted or denied the affidavit of the aforementioned Danjuma Manga and urged the court to recognize Bashir Sheriff Machina as the legitimate APC candidate for the Yobe North Senatorial District.
