World AIDS Day: Inequalities hampering efforts to end AIDS pandemic says UNAIDS

World AIDS Day: The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has stated that because of inequality, the world may not reach the AIDS-related global targets that have been set.

The AIDS response is in danger, UNAIDS warned earlier this year, as new infections are increasing and deaths are still occurring in many parts of the world.

However, a recent UNAIDS report titled “Dangerous Inequalities” demonstrates that the AIDS response can be put on track if quick action is taken to address inequalities.

According to UNAIDS, 1.5 million new HIV infections occurred in the same year that 650 000 people died from AIDS.

According to the report, while more than three-quarters of adults living with HIV are receiving antiretroviral therapy, only slightly more than half of children living with HIV are receiving the life-saving drug, which has had fatal repercussions.

This inequality in treatment access between adults and children is a major barrier to the fight against AIDS.

“In 2021, children made up 15% of all AIDS-related deaths but only 4% of all people with HIV. It will save lives if the treatment gap for children is closed.

Additionally, it was discovered that key populations are suffering from discrimination, stigmatisation, and criminalization, which is claiming lives and keeping the world from meeting agreed-upon AIDS targets.

According to the report, a feminist road map is the only one that can effectively lead to the eradication of AIDS, the attainment of sustainable development goals, and the assurance of health, rights, and shared prosperity.

The report showed how harmful gender norms and gender inequalities are impeding efforts to put an end to the AIDS pandemic and suggested that fiscal space for health investments in low- and middle-income countries be increased.

This could be done, for example, by substantially cancelling debt and enacting progressive taxation.

The study also revealed that neither in western and central Africa nor in eastern and southern Africa did new infections among gay men or other men who have sex with men significantly decline.

The UNAIDS claims that because HIV is contagious, failure to address important populations undermines the entire AIDS response and contributes to the slowing of progress.

The study that identified inequalities as the fundamental barrier to putting an end to the AIDS pandemic demonstrated how world leaders can address those inequalities and urged them to be courageous in acting on the evidence.

“Dangerous Inequalities explores the effects of gender inequality, population-specific inequality, and inequality between children and adults on the AIDS response. It explains how the difficulty of addressing those inequalities is increasing as a result of worsening financial constraints.

It was noted that over 68 nations still forbid same-sex relationships and that gay men and other men who engage in sexual activity with men who reside in African nations with the strictest laws are more than three times less likely to be aware of their HIV status than are their counterparts in nations with the laxest laws, where progress is much more rapid.

Compared to nations where sex work is legal or partially legalised, sex workers who live in nations where it is criminalised have a 7 times higher chance of having HIV.

In response to the new report, Winnie Byanyima, executive director of UNAIDS, stressed the importance of addressing the intersecting inequalities women experience and said that the world cannot defeat AIDS while sustaining patriarchy.

“What world leaders need to do is crystal clear,” she remarked.

Simply put: Equalize. Equalize access to services, rights, and the most advanced medical and scientific knowledge. Equalizing benefits everyone, not just the disadvantaged.

All will benefit from it. Women who experience intimate partner violence have a 50% higher risk of contracting HIV in areas with a high HIV prevalence.

From 2015 to 2021, only 41% of married women aged 15 to 24 in 33 countries were able to make their own decisions about their sexual health.

Atiku Supporters in Rivers Declare War Against Wike, Make Big Announcements

Atiku supporters in Rivers State have vowed not to bow to wike

Members of the Presidential Campaign Council of Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Rivers State have come together to declare that their support for Atiku remains absolute despite the harassment and threat of arrest and Executive Orders of Governor Nyesom Wike.

Director-General of the Council in Rivers State, Dr. Abiye Sekibo made the declaration in Port Harcourt on Wednesday at a meeting with the Atiku Democratic Movement and Concerned Ogoni PDP Elders Council in Port Harcourt.

The former Minister of Transport urged the electorates in the state to ignore the dictatorial style of Governor Wike and support Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 elections.

He said; “We shall not worship the gold image that Nebuchadnezzar has set up in Babylon, we are the Shedrack, Meshach, and Abednego of this time. He has set up a monument of gold which is money and he has asked the people to worship him, to do whatever he says. Shedrack, Meshach, and Abednego said that the image you have set up, we will not worship it. That is where the Atiku group in Rivers State stands. They can tear Atiku posters, bring out decrees but we stand with the truth,” he said.

On his part, a member of the council, Sir Celestine Omehia said the internal crisis that rocked the party has been put to rest as they have moved on.

Omehia stated; “In every family, there must be misunderstanding, and coming together after the misunderstanding is what matters. We have moved on and the crisis is no more to be talked about. What we are looking at right now is how to win elections and every person will benefit thereafter and there will be no discrimination. So whether any member of the family supports us or not, thereafter we will all benefit because the remedy is for the interest of Nigeria as a whole and the image of the country outside here”.

Also speaking, the chairman of the Concerned Ogoni PDP Elders Council, Dr. Boniface Amegwa assured the council that his group would mobilise massively for Atiku Abubakar in the elections.

“We are here to show solidarity and support for the candidature of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as elders, we represent all the wards of Ogoni and when we go back, we are going to garner support through a door-to-door campaign to ensure that Atiku wins,” he stated.

Top 10 Oldest Tribes in Nigeria : Is Ijaw or Igbo the oldest tribe in Nigeria

What is the oldest Tribe in Nigeria?

Is Igbo the oldest tribe in Nigeria or Is Ijaw the oldest tribe in Nigeria?

This page discussed all the top 10  oldest tribes in Nigeria, including the years they where spotted in Nigeria.

Nigeria is a multi-ethnic African country with numerous tribes and languages. Although the major tribes in Nigeria are the Igbos, Yorubas, and Hausas, there are other minorities spread across the federation who are also citizens of the country. There were ancient tribes that existed prior to the creation or even amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914, each with their own culture, form of government, and religious practise.

What is the oldest tribe in Nigeria?

Before the year 1500, Nigeria’s current settlement was divided into kingdoms rather than states, as it is today. These ancient kingdoms identified themselves through the names of ethnic groups. The Nupe Kingdom, Kanem-Borno Empire, Igala Kingdom, Igbo Kingdom of Nri, Oyo Empire, Kingdom of Ife, Benin Kingdom, and the Sokoto caliphate were among these early empires. Later in the nineteenth century, Christian missionaries brought the Portuguese and English to West Africa. The missionaries claim to have taught the indigenous peoples how to read and write.

In this post, we will look at ten of Nigeria’s oldest tribes and provide information about them. Please keep in mind that no one can pinpoint the exact tribe that claims to be the oldest, but we have records that show that the ten tribes listed below are the oldest in the country today.

Nigeria is a diverse country with over 197 million people who are members of one of 300 ethnic groups. Because they are direct descendants of some of the earliest modern human populations, many indigenous tribes have distinct DNA markers. These tribes are distinguished by their genetic and linguistic characteristics. Moreover, despite English colonisation, many tribes have maintained their cultural traditions for thousands of years. Which of these tribes was the first to appear? Here is a list of some of Nigeria’s oldest indigenous population groups.

What is the oldest Tribe in nigeria?

The following are the ten oldest tribes in Nigeria. This ranking isn’t determined by any arbitrary criteria. Furthermore, we are simply assigning these tribes a non-official ranking based on historical facts and data.

What is the top 10 oldest tribes in Nigeria?

These are the ancient tribes that once inhabited Nigeria, along with some information about each of them, listed in no particular order.

    NUPE TRIBE

It is believed that the Nupe people are responsible for the development of the majority of the dialects and languages that are spoken in the middle best region of the country. The Nupe tribe is considered to be one of the oldest tribes in the country. You can look for them in the states of Niger, Kwara, Kogi, and the Federal Capital Territory, respectively. Around the middle of the 15th century, the ancient Nupe Kingdom emerged in a basin located in the middle of Niger state and the Kaduna rivers.

The majority of the history that was learned about this ancient kingdom consisted primarily of legends that were passed down through oral tradition. Around the year 1770, it was said that King Jibiri was the first Nupe king to embrace the Islamic religion. King Jibiri During the 1800s, when the Nupe kingdom was at its peak of prosperity, Ma’azu served as its monarch. After Ma’azu passed away, the Fulani began their conquest of Northern Nigeria through a series of wars, which ultimately resulted in the Nupe Kingdom being conquered and incorporated into the Gwandu Emirate. This took place after Ma’azu’s death.

    • what is the oldest tribe in nigeria?

The Nupe people currently speak over 5 different dialects, the most common of which are the Bassa-Nge, Kupa, Kakanda, Dibo/Abawa, and Gana-Gana varieties.  Nupe people are considered to be one of the oldest tribes in Nigeria. The Nupe ethnic group is at the centre of Nigerian art and culture, and it is possible that the roots of the majority of Middle Belt dialects can be traced back to this group.

    IGALA TRIBE

Igala is another oldest tribe in nigeria. The Igala people are yet another ancient ethnic group in Nigeria that deserves to be mentioned. The Igala kingdom was established in the 16th century, making them one of the oldest tribes in the country. During the 16th century, Abutu-Eje laid the groundwork for what would later become the Igala Kingdom. This kingdom was ruled by a group of nine high officials known as the “Igala Mela.” The sacred Earth shrine was believed to be guarded by these men at all times.

Ebule-Jonu was the first person to hold the title of Ata, which refers to the ruler of the Igala kingdom. Her brother Agana-Poje, who was the father of Idoko, who would later succeed him, took over after she passed away. Ayegba was the second son of Idoko and took over as Ata’Gala after his father. He was the leader of the popular war that was fought against Jukun. The Igala people, who originally settled in the region formed by the confluence of the Benue and Niger state rivers, are famous for their bravery. They have also been discovered in the state of Kogi.

    IJAW TRIBE.

Ijaw is the oldest tribe in Nigeria.

The Ijaw are a people who are indigenous to Nigeria and the majority of them reside in the Niger Delta. Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers are three states in Nigeria that have significant population concentrations. They are also long-term migrants in other states in Nigeria, such as Ondo, Akwa Ibom, and Edo State, where they can be found there. Other states in Nigeria. Ijaws make up just over 10 million people, which is equivalent to approximately 1.8% of Nigeria’s total population.

Since 500 BCE, the Ijaw people have been residing in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, which makes them the oldest tribe in Nigeria as well as one of the oldest tribes in the world.

    KANURI TRIBE

The Kanuri are considered to be one of the oldest tribes in all of Nigeria. They are subdivided into a wide variety of subgroups, each of which is referred to by a unique name in a specific location.

The Kanuri language was the primary language spoken throughout the Bornu Empire, and it still holds that position to this day. The northeastern region of Nigeria is home to the vast majority of Kanuri people. In this country, there are approximately 3 million people who can speak Kanuri.

It is possible to trace the origins of Bornu’s ceremonial Emirate all the way back to the Kanem-Bornu empire, which was founded around the year 1000 CE. Legend has it that Sef, son of Yemen’s Dhu Ifazan, arrived in Kanem in the ninth century and established the Sayfawa dynasty there. This is according to the Kanuri people. Evidence of the development of an indigenous state has been found in the Zilum region of Lake Chad, which dates back to about 800 BCE.

    GBAGYI TRIBE

The Gbagyi are one of the oldest tribes in all of Nigeria. They are known for their willingness to coexist peacefully with others, their openness, and their flexibility. The Gbagyi have developed into a separate ethnic group within Nigeria and have developed a culture that reflects their perspective on the cosmos.

It would appear that the history of the Gbagyi tribe is concentrated in a broad belt of diverse terracotta productions. The other clay-based traditions that can be found along the belt date back quite a ways. The one from Daima, which is located close to the Nigerian border in the north, has been dated to fall between the years 600 B.C. and 1100 A.D., whereas the one from Yelwa has been dated to fall between the second and seventh centuries A.D.

The Gbagyi first came into contact with Islam in the 19th century, during the Sokoto Jihad of 1804, and later became exposed to Christianity through southerners in the 20th century.

    BENIN TRIBE

One of the oldest tribes in Nigeria is the Edo, also known as the Benin people. They live in Edo state. They are descendants of Edo and speak the language of their ancestors. The name “Benin” (and “Bini”) is a corruption of the word “Ubini,” which first appeared in usage around the year 1440 during the reign of Oba (ruler) Ewuare the Great. The name “Benin” (and “Bini”) comes from the Portuguese language.

Edo people can be found in Nigeria’s Edo State, which gets its name from the people who lived in Benin City, the most historically significant conglomeration in the area. Benin City is located in Edo State. The immediate areas surrounding Edo are home to a large number of connected communities that are, like Edo itself, confined by political and administrative boundaries. The majority of these organisations may be able to trace their origins all the way back to Benin City in its mediaeval heyday.

    YORUBA TRIBE

The Yoruba are also among Nigeria’s oldest tribes. Over 35 million Yoruba people live in Africa. This ethnic group is mostly found in Nigeria, where they make up 15.5 percent of the population.

The Yoruba people are one of Africa’s most urbanised groups. For centuries, the majority of Yorubas have lived in well-organized urban centres centred on powerful city-states and the residence of the Oba. In ancient times, the majority of these settlements were fortresses with massive walls and gates.

Yoruba cities have long been among the most populous in Africa. For a long time, Ibadan, one of the major Yoruba cities founded in the 1800s, was also the largest metropolis in Sub-Saharan Africa. Today, Lagos, another important Yoruba metropolis, is Africa’s largest city.

    HAUSA TRIBE

There are predominantly Hausa-speaking communities throughout West Africa. The Hausa have traditionally lived in small villages, precolonial towns, and cities. They communicate in Hausa, an Afro-Asian language spoken by the Chadic people.

The Hausa aristocracy had historically established an equestrian culture. The Hausa Nok civilisation arose around 1000 BCE in northern Nigeria and died out in the West African region around 300 AD for unknown reasons. It is thought to be descended from an ancestral nation that split to form the Hausa. Nok’s social structure is said to have been sophisticated. The Nok civilisation is said to have been the first in Sub-Saharan Africa to create life-sized Terracotta figures.

    THE IGBO TRIBE

The Igbo are also among Nigeria’s oldest tribes. They are a meta-ethnic group from what is now southern and southeastern Nigeria. One of Africa’s most populous ethnic groups is the Igbo. The Igbo language is part of the Niger-Congo language family.

The Igbo people’s origins have been the subject of much speculation, as it is unclear how the community came to be. Before British colonial authority in the twentieth century, the Igbo were a politically divided people. Following decolonization, the Igbo developed a strong sense of ethnic identity. During the Nigerian Civil War, the Igbo areas seceded to form the short-lived Republic of Biafra (1967–1970).

    TRIBE OF IBIBIO-EFIK

The Ibibio people live on the southern Nigerian coast. They are mostly found in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. They are related to the Annang and Efik peoples. Efik-Ibibio is a large dialect cluster in the Cross River branch of Benue-Congo.

The Ibibio people are the oldest of all Nigerian ethnic groups, living in the palm belt of southeast Nigeria. The Ibibio are thought to have been the first people to settle in southern Nigeria. They are believed to have arrived in their current location around 7000 B.C. Regardless of historical evidence, it is unknown when the Ibibio first arrived in the state.

    TRIBE OF EBIRA

The Ebira are an ethnolinguistic group from central Nigeria. Many Ebira people are from Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Edo states. During the conquest of Hausa country by the forces of religious and political leader Uthman Dan Fodio, this ancient Nigerian tribe clashed with Fulani warlords to the north and west. Igu (Koton Large) and Igu (Koton Small) were established in the mid-nineteenth century. Between 1865 and 1880, they fought alongside jihadists from Bida and Ilorin. In contrast, the Fulanis did not conquer the Ebiras. Their steep terrain’s inherent protections aided them in part.

Peter Obi Manifesto: Why it is Taking so Long? Here is What we know

Labour Party has disclosed the cause of the delay in releasing it’s Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi manifesto .

The Labour Party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, has provided justifications for delaying the party’s eagerly awaited manifesto.

He claims that the Labour Party is not in a rush to release its manifesto because the 2023 general elections are just the beginning for them.

According to Abure, although candidates have made a variety of promises and presented beautiful manifestos, this election is not about making promises.

According to information gathered by ejesgist.ng , Abure said  “I want to say clearly that we have a convergence between the party and the candidates on the issues that we are canvassing for the 2023 general elections.

We have reached a consensus on the subject of security, as well as on other issues like national unity and the economy. I think we have matched the candidates’ positions.”

“As a result, the positions of the spokespersons for the party and the campaign council are essentially identical.

I concur that a number of promises have been made in the past. Because of this, we have persisted in stating that 2023 will not just be about the promises made. The history, lineage, and character of those involved should also be considered.

“For us, 2023 involves more than just making internal commitments. We have seen people with beautiful manifestos and who have made promises, so we have not been in a rush to release the manifesto.

Peter Obi Manifesto – why it is Delayed

The Labour Party chair explained that people are fed up with the current political system while discussing the party’s popularity surge.

Abure noted that the current state of politics is an example of how people eventually learn to get rid of products that do not meet their needs.

Peter Obi, the party’s candidate, is the only presidential candidate in his opinion who possesses the skills and ability to spur development, according to him as well.

“Among the group of presidential candidates, our candidate is the only one who possesses the skills, moral fibre, and ability to lead the nation’s development process.

When we start visiting higher education institutions, we will soon notice a lot of road shows, town hall meetings, seminars, and campus visits.

Usman Baba Alkali, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has warned police commissioners in the 36 states not to be used by governors to prevent political opponents from holding campaign rallies.

IGP Usman, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Operations, Dandaura Mustapha, stated this on Wednesday at the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) 2022 political parties’ summit in Abuja.

The police chief directed state police commissioners to remove campaign bottlenecks erected by governors to frustrate their opponents.

He directed all police commissioners to provide security for political parties conducting electioneering in all parts of their state.

According to the IGP, any police commissioner who fails to carry out his responsibilities and chooses to obey illegal governor directives will be fired.

    He said:

We have been receiving a lot of complains from political parties. It is unfortunate of what is happening this period. All the political parties are complaining. It is not only APC or PDP or Labour Party or APGA. Unfortunately, some of our governors as stated by the IG during a meeting with the political parties that they are not helping matters.

They have not laid a solid foundation, give other political parties access to campaign programmes. Some try to manipulate the campaign.

Some even sponsor touts to pursue the opposition, remove their billboards and posters and destroy their offices.

Based on this, the Inspector General of Police, has categorically directed all the commissioners of police that on no account should any serving or sitting governor stop other political parties from conducting their campaigns in all the nook and cranny of the state.

This instruction was very clear both in writing and verbal. We have told all the commissioners of police. When it happens, the commissioners of police have been directed to arrest all the hoodlums no matter where they belong and whoever is sponsoring them we will arrest them and charge them to court.

So, please, be rest assured that all political parties are free to go about your lawful businesses. You are free to go to any village conduct your campaign freely and we are going to give you enough security. We are encouraging all the aspirants that once you are threatened and you have no access to go round meet the commissioner of police in charge of that state. They have been directed and warned to provide security for all the aspirants. No matter where they are going, they will attach security.

Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, told journalists in Benin yesterday that the government would announce the designated examination centres in March 2023.

This is a part of the ongoing reforms in the education sector. Exams will no longer be administered in four-bedroom homes or business centres, but rather in government-designated testing facilities.

“Private schools unwilling to comply with these reforms would not be permitted to operate in the state,” he stated.

He explained that the decision to have designated centres for these examinations was made to prevent malpractices, particularly “miracle centres” where mercenaries are brought into the school to sit for students’ exams.

“Nigerians Should Speak Up Now” — Police Commissioner Calls For Arrest Of First Lady For Taking The Law Into Her Hands

A Commissioner in the Police Service Commission (PSC), Naja’atu Muhammad has slammed Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari for taking the law into her own hands in the case of 23 year old student, Aminu Adamu who criticised her in June 2022.

Naja’atu Muhammad told Ejesgist.ng on Wednesday that the First Lady’s alleged action must be condemned by all Nigerians and called on security operatives to arrest and prosecute the first lady.

“She doesn’t have the right to do that. In fact, she should be prosecuted for doing just that.

“She has taken the law into her hands.

“She has taken the place and the responsibilities of the commander-in-chief.

“I think Nigerians should rise up and say no to this.

“We will no longer accept this tyranny. Buhari left a vacuum in leadership that is why all manner of people grabbed it.

“The same woman who said Mamman Daura had taken over her husband’s government has now become a tyrant.

“It is apparent she didn’t make that statement for God and the country but her selfish interest.

“This is not the first time she is doing this. She did it to her former ADC a couple of years ago…

“That boy was kept in prison for months. It took our intervention for him to be released.

“This is really a terrible thing to have happened.”

The rights activist wondered why the president’s wife and the security agencies had not been able to tame the growing insecurity in the country with the same vigor used in taming perceived critics.

“I want to ask our security men, why haven’t they been able to track down bandits and killers all over the country?

“Nigeria has become a killing machine. Women are being raped every single day, and their husbands are being killed.

“Millions have been made orphans. I have never known a time when Mrs Buhari even sympathized with these people, let alone get the bandits or culprits tracked down and taken to prison or even prosecuted.

“We have never heard that. She has become so egocentric, she has become the law in herself. Because of the irresponsibility of Nigerians who have allowed this to happen.

Naja’atu Muhammad maintained that this country belongs to Nigerians who have permanent right over their leaders.

She stressed that Nigerians did not vote for Aisha Buhari or any of these hangers on around Buhari.

“We voted for Buhari, and the same peasants, artisans, students, and general people of this country that voted for Buhari are now getting the exact opposite of what they hoped for,” she added.

According to Baba, the incident happened in Spintex, Accra, the capital of Ghana.

My question is, who actually lies to these young boys and girls that money rituals truly exist? Ladies, you have to be careful of who you trust; it doesn’t matter how calm the man looks. Just be careful.”

The Public Relations Officer, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abdur-Rahmam Balogun, however, said the agency was not aware of the incident.

He, however, stated that the suspect would have to face the laws in Ghana.

He said, “Our stand is that any Nigerian that commits a crime, let the law of the land take its course. The Nigerian government has no role to play in such instances. If you go to another man’s land and commit a crime, the law of the land will always take its course. So, we always advise Nigerians to be good ambassadors wherever they find themselves.
