PDP Party chairman shot, journalists arrested in Edo

Yesterday, Edo State boiled over at the Peoples Democratic Party’s parallel senatorial primaries (PDP).

Four journalists covering the faction of National Vice Chairman, Southsouth, Chief Dan Orbih, were detained by police.

Political thugs fired gunshots on occasion.

During the primary election, the PDP Chairman of Oredo Ward 5, Benin, Tunde Igbinoba, of Orbih’s group, was shot.

Many vehicles, including Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), were demolished outside an event centre near the gate of Benin Airport, the venue of Orbih’s faction’s primaries, by supporters of Governor Godwin Obaseki, who were enraged that Orbih’s group had the upper hand.

Many key stakeholders in the PDP in Edo boycotted Obaseki’s factional primary election, which was held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin. Instead, they went to Orbih’s faction’s primary.

Overzealous police officers, backed up by Edo Security Network personnel and state vigilance officers, arrested Deborah Coker, Senior Editor/Political Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN); Sunny Ohioze, reporter of Africa Independent Television (AIT); and his unnamed cameraman; and Ogbomo Osamuyi, radio correspondent of Independent Television (ITV) for covering Orbih’s faction.

Before being released, the journalists were accused of covering a “illegal” primary election and forced to submit statements.

Obaseki’s delegates chose Matthew Iduriyekemwen, the former Majority Leader of the Edo House of Assembly, to represent the Edo South Senatorial District.

He defeated incumbent Senator Mathew Uroghide, while Orbih’s faction chose Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, a member of the House of Representatives who represents the Oredo seat.

Nnamdi Kanu sends fresh message to ‘Unknown Gunmen’

On Monday, Nnamdi Kanu, the jailed leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), demanded an end to the bloodshed in the Southeast region perpetrated by the so-called “Unknown Gunmen.”

According to Newmen, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, relayed the IPOB leader’s message.

He had paid a routine visit to Kanu, who is being held by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Kanu was cited as saying that all those responsible for the ongoing killings in the southeast must face justice, adding that the Igbo people are not known for cannibalism, beheadings, or senseless slaughter.

Kanu’s warning comes after police in Anambra State uncovered the severed head of a state legislator who went missing last week. Separatists have been accused of killings and kidnappings in Anambra and other southeast states by the federal government.

IPOB has been leading efforts for the region, which is home to the Igbo ethnic group, to secede from Nigeria. The federal government has charged Kanu, the group’s leader, with “terrorism” and treason.

Adulterated diesel Explosion kills pick-up van driver

The explosion of a mini pick van on Muritala Mohammed Highway Bebobsco axis on Monday evening in Calabar caused chaos, with the driver killed and the other occupant narrowly escaping death.

The mini pick up van was reportedly transporting adulterated diesel drums to an unknown destination; however, when they arrived at the Bebobsco bus stop, they were forced to slow down due to speed bumps; however, the driver failed to notice them in time, making it difficult to stop with speed, resulting in a spark and explosion.

Mr Gilbert, an eyewitness, informed Newsmen that the Mini Pick up was coming from EPZ when the unfortunate tragedy occurred.

“It happened while the vehicle was in motion, you know there are some speed bumps around the area due to the opening that was made last year to allow vehicle make U-Turn, but the driver didn’t notice and had to stop abruptly, which led to the explosion.”

“We suspect he was carrying adulterated Diesel because a normal product cannot explode like that; the conductor was fortunate in that he was rushed to the hospital; however, the driver was not so fortunate in that he was burned beyond recognition and the mini pick up was reduced to ashes.”

The explosion caused major gridlock on the highway as motorists attempted to help the burning driver put out the flames, but their attempts were unsuccessful as the roaring inferno destroyed the driver, his trucks, and the merchandise he was carrying.

The Federal Fire Service Operations truck arrived at the scene of the incident around 20 minutes later and put out the fire.

Mr Clement Bassey, Head of Operations, Federal Fire Service, Cross River, who confirmed the occurrence over the phone, said they moved as soon as they received the report about the incident, but one of the occupants was already dead when they arrived.

“According to the information I received from the office, the man died before our men arrived.

So far, we’ve learned that the vehicle exploded while in motion and that the driver was severely burned,” he said.

Following the escalating level of insecurity in Anambra State, the state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has declared a war on criminals, claiming that no place in the state is safe for them to operate.

At the Governor’s Lodge in Awka, Soludo told aspirants of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, that the government is putting strict measures in place with security agencies to face the matter head on and restore peace and order to the state.

The governor expressed his sorrow over the death of Okechukwu Okoye, a member of the State House of Assembly representing Aguata Constituency II, who was gruesomely murdered alongside his aide, Cyril Chiegboka, by gunmen. He promised that the perpetrators of the heinous act would be apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.

He said that the state’s security problems were caused by “criminals who have turned to kidnapping, killing, and other forms of criminality as a lucrative profession, a long cry from any type of political activity.”

The governor thanked APGA members for their support throughout his gubernatorial campaign and commended them on successfully participating in and going through the party’s vetting process.

While claiming that the APGA remained one huge family, Soludo expressed confidence that the party would win handily in the upcoming elections for the state House of Assembly, House of Representatives, and Senate.

He told them that he would help establish APGA into a strong political party based on the strong idea of true federalism and power devolution, and that those who exploited APGA as a mercenary platform to get into office would have to wait until it was their turn again when they returned to the party.

He also commended them for volunteering to serve the good people of Anambra State, saying, “There is a need to form a political party of believers built on the principle of loyalty.”

Landlord, gateman arrested for allegedly killing 4-year-old boy for ritual

A landlord and his gateman have been arrested by the Niger State Police Command for their suspected involvement in the ritual death of a 4-year-old kid, Hassan Ibrahim, in the state’s Lapai Local Government Area.

DSP Abiodun Wasiu, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the situation on Saturday in Minna, saying that an inquiry into the incident had begun and warning people against jungle justice.

After the remains of the youngster were supposedly discovered four days after he was pronounced missing, the suspects were saved from being lynched by a mob.

According to a local resident who did not want to be recognised, the landlord, identified as Emmanuel, a well-known building materials vendor, conspired with his gateman to kidnap the youngster.

The two suspects allegedly killed the youngster and removed his critical organs, including his eyes, ears, private part, and heart, before placing his remains in a sack for the gateman to dispose of, according to the resident.

“The gateman took a motorcycle to a stream to dispose of the remains, but when the biker dropped the gateman, he spotted blood flowing from the sack. Bystanders and police were alerted by the business motorcyclist, according to the resident.

The police responded by mobilising and moving to the stream, where the gatekeeper was apprehended. He allegedly admitted to his landlord that he was sent to dispose of the body and that they were responsible for the kidnapping of the boy.

Outraged by the situation, some local youngsters set fire to the home and vehicles of the prominent dealer who supposedly hired the accused killer.

Controversy trails PDP primaries as winners emerge

The PDP‘s Lagos State branch has petitioned the National Working Committee (NWC) to call off the primaries for the House of Assembly and House of Representatives.

Mr. Philips Aivoji, the party’s chairman, made the announcement at a press conference.

The electoral committee’s ad hoc delegates’ lists for both primaries, according to Aivoji, had been tampered with.

The exercise was yet to take place at the time of reporting this report, since party members were stranded while officials in charge of the exercise arrived.

“We are all astonished to find that the lists do not reflect the authentically chosen Ad-Hoc delegates as performed by the party’s organs at the ward level and overseen by the DSS and INEC,” Aivoji added.

“Copies of the state’s Ad-Hoc lists, which were presented to INEC, are completely different from the one brought by the committee for the purpose of the exercise.”

“We have been unable to contact the committee chairman and secretary because their phones have been shut off or are unavailable.”

“As law-abiding members of our great party, we unanimously reject these lists and can no longer guarantee the free, fair, and credible party primary that we have vowed to hold.”

“The proceedings were rigged from the start to favour one candidate over another.

“As a result, we demand that the election be called off completely.” Otherwise, not alone would the party’s electoral prospects be jeopardised.”

Over 10 gunmen stormed the Anglican Girl’s Grammar School in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, where the PDP House of Assembly primary was being held.

Shortly after the results were announced, they assaulted the arena in three Toyota Sienna vans, shooting into the air.

The incumbent, Rollands Igbakpa, and Erhiatake Suenu-Ibori tied for the PDP Ethiope Federal Constituency after each receiving 34 votes.

Mr Eugene Ozum, the returning officer for the Ethiope Federal Constituency, pronounced the election a tie and stated the PDP hierarchy would convene to make a conclusion.

Orode Uduaghan, the daughter of former Delta Governor Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, was defeated by Fred Martins in the PDP Warri North Constituency primary.

Uduaghan, who received only seven votes, was defeated by Fred Martins, who received 25 votes.

Askia Ogieh, the former Managing Director of the Delta State Oil Producing and Development Commission (DESOPADEC), lost the PDP Isoko Federal Constituency primaries to Jonathan Ukodhiko, who received 33 votes to Askia’s 21.

Ten of Niger’s 26 seats submitted election results before 8 p.m.

Rafi, Bida South, Bida North, Bosso, Lavun, Suleja, Gurara, Chachanga, Wushishi, and Bosso are among the LGAs.

At 8 p.m., Niger PDP Director of Special Duties Rahina Ibrahim sent an email to all electoral officers informing them that the state party secretariat had closed and that results would be collated again at 8 a.m. today.

Many LGAs experienced late arrival of electoral officers and thugs disrupting activity.

The PDP candidates for the 26 state constituencies and 10 federal constituencies in Akwa Ibom were chosen through primaries.

The drills, which started about 1 p.m. owing to late material delivery, were pleasant.

Members who were angry with the results of the ad-hoc delegates election on April 30 skipped the primary.

Mr. Ephraim Inyang-Eyen, a Senatorial aspirant for Akwa Ibom South (Eket) district, revealed that they boycotted the primaries because it was illegitimate.

Michael Isaiah, alias Tompolo, a native of Ogbia, Bayelsa State, was assassinated during the primaries in the area.

As candidates, many fresh names emerged. Mrs Ebizi Ndiomu-Brown, a former Deputy Chief of Staff to Seriake Dickson, was proclaimed the winner of the Sagbama Constituency 3 election.

Pamoh Werinipre won the Kolokuma-Opokuma Constituency 1 election.

In Ogun, Rasheed Kashamu, the son of late Senator Buruji Kashamu, won the primary election for Ijebu North State constituency 1 (Ijebu Igbo).

Yusuf Daisi, also known as Legacy, was elected to the PDP House of Assembly for the Ijebu Ode state constituency.

The primaries were marked by late arrival of materials and the absence of supplies in some centres.

Criticism and dissatisfaction followed the primaries in Oyo.

While the intra-party election went through without a hitch in some areas, the scene was tense in others.

Some delegates alleged they did not sign INEC results at the ancient Mapo Hall, where the primary for Ibadan South East State Constituency 1 was held, to show their opposition to the manner the election was conducted.

St. John’s Primary School, Alake, Academy, Ibadan, the election venue for South East State Constituency 2, had a similar report.

Delegates also claimed that some party leaders intimidated and harassed them in order to ensure that only those who would vote for their candidates were permitted to vote. They said that party leaders showed there with uniformed security officers who allegedly barred certain delegates from voting.

At Mapo Hall, our correspondent spotted the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Amb. Taofeek Arapaja, who was surrounded by security personnel including police officers, DSS agents, and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps members (NSCDC).

Security officers insisted that only delegates be allowed into the hall where the election was held, therefore journalists were not permitted in.

Patricia Etteh: Family faults ex-Speaker’s arrest, blames EFCC

The Ette family has faulted the arrest of ex-Speaker Patricia Ette.

Patricia Etteh, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, according to her family.

In a statement signed by its representative, Femi Alabi, titled ‘Mrs Patricia Etteh’s detention: Putting the record straight,’ the family also blamed the EFCC for the ex-arrest. lawmaker’s

Ejes Gist Newspaper reports that  EFCC arrests ex-Speaker Patricia Etteh over N240m NDDC contract

According to reports, the former speaker received N130 million from Phil Jin Project Limited, a company that was awarded a N240 million contract by the NDDC in 2011.

    Patricia Etteh’ Family statement reads;

“We, the family of Mrs Patricia Etteh, strongly condemn the illegal detention of our matriarch by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday,” the statement read.

“We want to put it on record that the former Speaker of the House of Representatives went to the Commission’s office to honour an invitation she received via SMS to clarify the contract issue involving Philjin Projects Ltd.

“To clear the air, Mrs Ibiene Wille-Harry, the Chief Executive Officer of Philjin Projects Ltd, a company under investigation, is, as far as we know, a longtime friend of Mrs Etteh.

“Their friendship is so strong that Mrs Etteh’s daughter stayed at Mrs Wille-house Harry’s until she graduated from university.”

“As a result of this closeness, Mrs Patricia Etteh provided constant financial assistance in the form of soft loans to Mrs Wille-Harry, allowing the latter to complete several projects.

“It is crystal clear that the basis of every transaction between Mrs Etteh and Mrs Wille-Harry during the EFCC’s timeframe was evidence of loan repayment.”

“Obviously, Mrs Patricia Etteh reserves the right, under her inalienable right, to instruct her debtor to make payment in any manner she deems desirable in light of her financial circumstances at the time, thus the directive to make payment into her personal and company accounts.”

In the event of any predetermined notion of fraud, there would not have been a directive to make payment into her personal account.

“Secondly, Mrs Patricia Etteh had nothing to do with any business transaction with Mrs Wille-Harry other than generous assistance on the basis of friendship, according to all indications.”

“However, the EFCC’s hasty assumption and infringement of her fundamental rights in labelling the said mutual transaction a ‘fraud’ is nothing more than a fallacy of hasty assumption.”

“To that end, we want to state unequivocally that this development has deeply disturbed and concerned us as a family because we are people of illustrious ancestry with an important family name to safeguard.”

“We can state categorically that Mrs Patricia Etteh has no involvement with any contract, as the commission has established that she is neither a director of the company nor a contractor.”

Patricia Etteh is content and would never get involved in any shady deals, as per our family’s guiding philosophy.” She never solicited a contract while in office as an elected official.

“The purity of her personality had previously been established by appropriate authorities after she was wrongfully accused as Speaker of the House of Representatives, and her innocence was later declared without blemish.”

“We therefore strongly urge the Commission to focus its attention on the investigation of Philjin Projects Ltd, in order to determine the veracity of Mrs Etteh’s part as explained therein, as we demand her immediate and unconditional release based on her innocence and fundamental human rights.”

Breaking: Court denies Nnamdi Kanu bail, See why

Court has denied Nnamdi Kanu bail, IPOB leader to remain in detention.

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has been denied bail by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja (IPOB).

In her ruling on Kanu’s bail application, Justice Binta Nyako stated that the issue of Kanu’s absence in the past, dating back to 2017, must be resolved before his bail application can be considered.

Kanu also broke his previous bail conditions, according to her, and his current bail application is immature until that is heard.

The Federal Government filed a six-count amended charge against Kanu on Wednesday morning, ahead of the decision on the bail application.

However, Justice Nyako chastised the prosecution for filing an amended charge just hours before the decision. She said she didn’t find out about the amended charge until she arrived at court the next morning.

The prosecution, she claims, cannot present the new amended charge to the court on the morning of the hearing.

The court noted that Kanu’s trial had been delayed numerous times since 2015 due to over 19 interlocutory applications filed in the case.

As a result, it pleaded with the parties to allow the case to go to trial so that the charge could be determined.

Kanu had asked the court to release him on bail, pending the outcome of the charge against him, in an application filed under sections 6(6) and 36(5) and (6) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, as well as sections 161, 162, 163 and 165 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, 2015.
