On Monday, March 8, 2021, a young taxi driver named Michael Lawal appeared before Justice M. A. Odegbola of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State.
He was found guilty and sentenced to three months in prison by the judge.
Michael was found guilty after pleading guilty to an amended one-count charge of obtaining money under false pretences brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Ibadan Zonal Office.
“That you, Michael Tosin Lawal ‘M’, sometime in the year 2020, in Ibadan, Oyo State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, obtained Gift Cards from one Trevor, a white male, by falsely representing to him that you are a white female by the name of Cyndy Tyler from the United States of America, which pretence you knew to be false,” according to the single charge.
Justice Odegbola found him guilty and sentenced him to three months in prison after hearing his plea. He also ordered the convict to return $50 (Fifty United States Dollars) to his victim through the EFCC, as well as forfeit items seized from him to the Nigerian government.
