Wole Soyinka’s house was not attacked — Son explains what transpired

On Wednesday, Dr Olaokun Soyinka, one of the children of the Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, debunked social media rumours about Fulani herdsmen allegedly attacking his father.

The young Soyinka said that the storey was not true in a statement he circulated on social media.

“It should be remembered that some social media platforms published a storey that: “The house of Prof. Wole Soyinka was attacked last night by Fulani hoodlums and miscreants to assassinate him because of his numerous truth to power and especially because of his recent news interview where he spoke truth to the presidency, particularly advising Buhari to come out openly and denounce the Fulani herdsmen bastda.

But in the statement, Dr Olaokun Soyinka said the storey was nothing but fake.

“He said, “This is not true, please don’t continue to circulate and help debunk it.

“It is an attempt to promote disagreement. Even though some cows were spotted, no one attacked either Prof or his house.’

“I confirmed it today (Wednesday 10th) directly from him myself.”

Kindly, whatever the motive, do not fall for this attempt to further inflame this problematic situation,’ he concluded.

The State Command of the Nigerian Police, for its part, said that it was nothing but a case of a stray cow.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta and made available to Vanguard, the command spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said there was no attempt by any individual to attack Prof. Soyinkaa.

“Abimbola said, “It was a surprise to see a video trend on social media that Fulani herders invaded the respected Professor Wole Soyinka’s house in order to attack or kill him.

“The video is nothing but a calculated attempt by mischiefmakers to cause panic in people’s minds,” he said. There is nothing like the invasion of the house of Prof Wole soyinka or any form of assault on his individual.

The police statement read, “The Ogun state police command was drawn to a video circulating on social media about an alleged attack by Fulani herders on Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole soyinka’s house and the command wants to set the record straight as follows.”

Yesterday, Tuesday 9 February 2021, a young Fulani man, Awalu Muhammad, who looks after the cattle that one of the cows had been missing, was informed by one Kazeem Sorinola and an Ijeun Abeokuta indegine who is in the cattle business.

While the Fulani man was searching around Kemta Estate for the stray cow where the house of Professor Wole soyinka is located, the Professor himself, who was going out, saw the Fulani man with some of the cows and came down to ask where the man was going with the cows.

He asked the Fulani man there and then to move the cattle away from the vicinity.’

The Kemta division of the DPO, who heard of the incident, moved quickly to the scene with the patrol team and invited the owner of the cows to come with the Fulani man in charge of the cattle. The duo were questioned and profiled properly.

“The DPO inspected the entire place and it was established that it was just a case of a stray cow because nothing was damaged or tampered with.”

The video is nothing but a calculated attempt by mischief-makers to cause people’s minds to panic. There is nothing like the invasion of the house of Prof Wole soyinka or any form of assault on his individual.

Police Commissioner Edward Awolowo Ajogun was on the scene for on-the-spot evaluation, and he personally interviewed Kazeem Sorinola, the owner of the cattle, as well as the Fulani man in charge of the cattle, and their statements clearly show that the mischievous invitation narrative is not to be taken seriously.

Hereby, the command wants to warn the fake news peddler to desist from it as they can be made to feel the law’s weight.

“It is an offence for anyone to create or assist in circulating false news, so the command will now trace and fish out those who deliberately distribute false information to members of the public, particularly the one that causes panic in the minds of innocent people.”
