Will Smith Apologises
Will Smith has finally apologised to Chris Rock for hitting him on the Oscars in 2022, despite rising backlash.
You may recall that roughly two-and-a-half hours into ABC’s Oscar telecast on Sunday night, a heated exchange between Rock and Will Smith erupted.
“Jada, I love ya,” Rock said when presenting the Best Documentary Feature award. “Can’t wait to see GI Jane 2,” he said, referring to Jada Pinkett Smith, who is bald and has previously spoken out about her hair loss affliction, alopecia.
Smith initially appeared to giggle at the joke, but Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes and looked annoyed. Smith stepped up to the stage shortly after and took a swing at Rock.
Rock exclaimed, “Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s–t out of me.” After Rock argued that the dig was simply a joke, Smith, who had returned to his seat, exclaimed from the audience, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth!” and repeated it.
Smith apologised in a message posted on Facebook early Tuesday morning, saying, “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive.” My behaviour at the Academy Awards last night was both terrible and inexcusable. Jokes about my medical condition are part of the work, but one about Jada’s illness was too much for me to handle, and I reacted emotionally.
“I’d like to make a public apology to you, Chris.” I was both out of line and incorrect. I’m embarrassed, and my actions do not reflect the guy I aspire to be. Violence has no place in a world of love and peace.
“I’d also like to express my regret to the Academy, the show’s producers, all of the attendees, and everyone watching around the world.” I’d like to express my regret to the Williams and King Richard families. I am very sorry that my actions have marred what has otherwise been a wonderful adventure for all of us. “I’m still working on myself.”
Smith went on to win Best Actor, and in his acceptance speech, he alluded to the incident (although in a roundabout way). “At your highest moment, be careful – that’s when the devil comes for you,” Denzel [Washington] told me,” he said through tears, before adding, “I want to apologise to the Academy.” I’d like to express my regret to my fellow nominees.”
